Oliver sniffed and wiped his eyes as he walked through the dusty old reaches of the school library. Another day, another round of getting shoved around by brutes who thought that he would be an easy target because of his short stature, his orphan status and his obvious lack of Japanese ancestry. For yet another day he had proven them right, shoved from behind and pinned beneath his massive backpack as they kicked him around and sent pencils and fluttering notebooks pages flying so he had to scramble underneath their giggling gaze so as to not lose the only things that mattered to him, the only thing that made him feel at peace with himself. He grazed his fingers along a dusty old academic tome, something thick, heavy and a little dry "The Migratory Patterns of the Bird Populations in Hokkaido." Just reading the words on the cover were enough to set him at ease, something heavy to get lost in until even the torment and loneliness he felt were lost under the weight of the written word. He flinched at a sudden flash of flickering light off to one side.
"Who else is here at this time of night?" He said, feeling the grip of uncertainty in his heart. These cramped, dusty corridors in the most heavy academic sections were supposed to be one of the few sanctuaries that he had, the kind of place that no bully would ever set foot in. he walked to the end of the lane and found a cataloguing station, a old, off white computer monitor connected to a scanning gun to help show what books were returned and which ones were out. The screen was flickering in a wild display of colors and yet as Oliver turned back and forth he couldn't find a single other soul in the dark library section. He walked up to the computer and pressed a single key as if trying to snap the computer back to reality.
The flash that came next was overwhelming as Oliver felt something collide with his chest and knock him onto his butt. It was heavy and round on both ends, big enough that he could hug it to his chest and cover most of his torso. When the flashing finally subsided he was holding an egg. Matte grey all the way around save for a single black square right in the center of the egg's "face". Again Oliver looked around, seeing that he was still totally all alone. His head was a mess. He was excited, something new, something to explore at the same moment his logical mind was engaging with the danger and uncertainty that this mysterious alien egg represented. He picked it up and instantly his curiosity snapped into control of the rest of his mind. He bolted back into the endless stacks of fusty books, he didn't even know where to start looking for answers about what the hell had just happened, so he had a million lovely places to check!
