Zack mumbled something about being glad that his costume included boots. Even if the Digital World was helpfully lacking in denizens of the creepy and crawly kind he wouldn't have wanted to stumble over the thickets, brambles and randomly placed rocks in lighter shoes. Off roading had never been one of his strong suits but you don't grow up twenty minutes drive from the wilds of northeast Maine without picking up at least a couple of things. Whenever he stepped up on top of an obstacle he would stand off to one side, offering hands to hikers and helping them heft themselves over without tripping.
Marigold and Violet both buzzed along near the back of the group, it was an instinct that their father had been very sure to imbue in them. Marigold especially was a fighter and that meant if anything came up behind them it would have to get through her first to attack the rest of the group.
"Everybody single file, let's try not to trip over each other at the last hurdle." Zack said, shouldering up against a tree as he shoved himself through the ever tightening path, sending a cascade of loose leaves down over his head. He placed his hands on his hips and inspected the box, beginning to make a wide walk around it. Knowing the Digital world there was a heavily non zero chance that he would talk around it to one side and see that it had a face and a bad attitude to go along with it.
"That is...possibly puzzling." Violet said as they observed the compass winging wildly in one direction and then the other. "That means one of two things. Either the compass is broken again...or we are standing directly on top of the source of its pointing." Violet said as eyes turned toward the crate. Zack stood there, one foot tapping. There was no way that this wasn't some kind of trap.
"We've got a creepy island, missing people and one big fat box in the middle of a clearing. We can all smarten up and go home OR we can do what we're gonna do and either open the box or lighter the candle and deal with the fight that comes afterwards." Marigold said, making Zack hang his head and sigh before softly nodding. Not to look down on that surprise companions but he knew that at least one of them was going to be unable to resist the allure of the box and the cursed looking candle.
