Feeling the Angoramon patting his head, Amper made a comfortable murmuring sound, sticking his tongue out in response. Just like his brother Vinny, he loved the feeling of just how much the gesture pacified him. It made him a sense of comfort and euphoria, even more so when it was from his family. Despite the fact that he just met Arlo, he had plenty of good vibes for him to enjoy.
Omen and Owen revealed that the symbol on one of the documents was the symbol of the Digital World Republic or DWR for short. “Digital World Republic…” Amper repeated it slowly. Vergil, who was sitting down adjacent to the group, stood up in attention, surprised at the revelation. He’d never have guessed that Owen was a soldier during that time period, nor would he have thought that a conflict here was so big that it required soldiers. Vergil noted the Gaomon’s change in expression in his explanation, so he’ll make a note to ask him about the DWR later once they’ve completed the mission.
Despite revealing the discomfort of bringing along his grandchildren here, Owen expressed confidence that they would be able to handle whatever would come their way. Amper gave a reassuring “Zappu” in response, a streak of electricity appearing in confident green eyes.
“Don’t forget about me,” Vergil said, walking over to them. “I may be the only human here, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna stand around and let you guys get in on all of the action. I may not have Vee and Gummy with me, but I ain’t all useless. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t stand on the sidelines anymore.” He looked down at Amper, smiling. “Besides, what kind of uncle would I be if I let my nephew protect me? That’d be so uncool of me.”
Amper, motivated by Vergil’s speech, happily jumped from Arlo’s fur and onto Vergil’s shoulder, nuzzling his cheek. “That’s right! My uncle Specs is the toughest human around, zappu!”
As Owen went to discuss further findings with Rory, Arlo approached Vergil to express his worries about what happened to Amper with the Ogremon that attacked the two of them. “Not at all, Amper took care of him,” the young man replied. “I won’t go into details, but it’s just like Owen said, this little guy is tougher than his appearance will lead you to believe. If that guy ever comes back, he’ll have to answer to Amper’s parents.”

Gem asked what attributes did in fact. Rory opened his mouth to answer, then closed it, looking awkwardly at Owen. The Gaomon smiled back.
“It really doesn’t matter.” he assured them. He didn’t know or care what attributes meant for digimon, it was no effect on their value in his eyes. For some digimon though, it did matter, and Owen thought very little of those types.
Eventually Gem’s questions became a bit too much for Gogmamon to answer. “Hmm, I’ll answer you later, we’re approaching the operations room now and I need to concentrate, thank you.” the mineral digimon said, rather needing to focus on sorting out this operation at the moment.
After Arlo had reassured him that they would really be okay down here, Owen was glad to hear of it. Indeed, he had made precautions himself, which he would soon present to everyone.
Luneth had noticed that Owen scowled at the noticeboard. The Gaomon blinked, then realized what his face was showing off, then immediately shook his head and resumed his more stoic expression. “Ah, no need to worry. Just that specific message brought back some memories…” he took a deep breath, supposing he’d keep honesty at all times. “Toward the end of the DWR civil war, they stripped every non-essential mine of equipment to expend on the war effort. And mines needed a lot of explosives to be operational…” he paused, then raised a paw to his chin in thought. “Now that’s a conundrum. Why would they shut down a digizoid mine, with all its possible material for arms and armor before the war ended…?”
“Mr. Owen… do you remember anything specific about this mine? This could be important.” Rory asked his superior officer. Owen wished he could give a useful answer, but he simply had no memories available about this specific mine.
“I’m really sorry, guys, I don’t remember.” was all he could say. He noticed that Vergil had shown attention as he mentioned he was a soldier of the DWR. Owen felt a small pang of guilt at that, he had never told him. He definitely felt that he should explain things, given he had adopted Vergil to be his surrogate son. But it had been difficult to find the right moment. Especially when Owen’s memories of that time were so fractured and imprecise. But still, he wanted to establish a relationship of honesty and openness with the human. He hoped there would be opportunity for that sometime.
Owen smiled at Vergil as he declared he’d be up for whatever challenge was down in the mine. “I don’t doubt it. I’ve worked alongside a lot of you humans, you people can be incredible.” Owen said, remembering his various adventures alongside humans elsewhere in the digital world.
Their attention was next drawn to a poster on the elevator. It definitely seemed to be more prominent than the other tatty posters around the place, with fluorescent colours no less. That gained even Gogmamon’s attention, as he approached to receive the report from the safety crew shortly arriving on the elevator.
“A sun and moon… what in the world could that mean?” he wondered out loud. “There’s no skylight down here, so how could anyone tell whether the sun or moon was out?”
“Well, Mr. Gogmamon, perhaps it could represent something else?” Rory suggested. “The moon is pointing to the sun, so, maybe that could represent some working symbols that were commonplace down here?”
“Hmm. Possible.” Gogmamon admitted. “You there, pull out all documents you can from the operations office.” he told some Gotsumon and Goblimon workers, who immediately obeyed. “I suppose there’s more to that riddle later, but for now, if the elevator is safe, I would like for you to proceed in your exploration.”
In that moment, the elevator returned to the operations level. The safety team that had been tasked with testing it declared the elevator safe for use, meaning that their advancement through the mine was all clear.
“Very good.” Gogmamon said, once he had heard the news. “Now, before you go, the cameras I gave you. They also operate as walkie-talkie radios, so if you need to communicate with me at any time, speak through them. I’m not having you fumbling in the dark down there.”
“Ah, that’s excellent news, Mr. Gogmamon, thank you.” Owen said, rather relieved. “Also, everyone, while we’re exploring the lower shafts, I would like us all to stick together closely at all times. Because I also have a safety measure that should hopefully activate even if we encounter such a calamity as a cave-in.”
Owen then revealed his D-MR. “If the way back gets blocked off, I’ll be able to use this to open up a portal in 5 minutes to get us back to the surface, and all of us can evacuate with no problem. Then we can recouperate and hopefully continue, once our safety is assured.”
“Hm. Yes, that would work as a safety measure.” Gogmamon agreed. He then consulted with the safety crew momentarily, before turning back to the group. “Alright, the elevator has been declared safe to use. Also, take care in the lower shafts. The electricity from the generator seems to be running smoothly, but you’ll need to switch the breakers lower down to supply power and lighting deeper down, and we don’t know if that can provide reliable light yet. Still, remember, this is a long term operation, and if you encounter anything you feel is beyond your capabilities, let me know, take pictures, and return at once, so that we can try again some other time.”
Owen thought that was reasonable. Once the elevator was ready, he and Rory would step onto it, awaiting the others.

Gem was disappointed for two reasons. One: he didn't get the closure he wanted about attributes, only getting an answer of "it didn't really matter" when it clearly has to, or else these attributes wouldn't exist to begin with, right? And two: Gogmamon shut down Gem's questions by saying that he needed to focus on the mission. "Oh..." Gem said as he stood still, visibly a bit hurt that Gogmamon walked away. But he didn't want to be a bother to him, so he just tried to focus his attention on other things in the meantime.
Omen explained to Luneth that all Rasielmon can see an infinite number of futures, although her mother's power seemed to be exceptionally stronger and not voluntary in the slightest. Luneth frowned. "That sounds a lot like the less fun version of that kind of power from a human world TV show I saw once... something about a raven... regardless, I do not envy your mother at all. I've... I've seen death only once before, and I cannot imagine it gets easier the more of it you see."
While they were trying to reassure Owen about letting the kids come along, Arlo smiled when he saw Amper jump right out of his fur and onto Vergil's shoulder. He could tell that there was a familial love between the three of them: Owen, Vergil and Amper. It made sense... but the Angoramon couldn't help but feel a little bit jealous. He had talked about starting a family with Renna many times before her death, and knowing that what the three of them had wasn't in the cards for Arlo... it filled his Digicore with sorrow. But with Arlo being Arlo, he never visibly expressed this with anyone.
Vergil then explained to Arlo that Amper took care of that Ogremon problem himself, stating that the Pulsemon was a lot stronger than he appeared to be. "I see... appearances are not all that they appear to be. The crouching tiger has a chance of revealing themselves to be the hidden dragon." That quite described Arlo, as well...
When Luneth asked Owen if he was alright, the Gaomon explained that the specific message brought back some unpleasant memories. "Mother explained to me that part about the stripping of mines..." Owen had a point though; this mine had to have been essential, so why abandon it so quick? Rory asked Owen if he remembered anything about this mine, to which Owen said he didn't. Disappointing, but it wasn't like they were expecting him to have all the answers to begin with.
The sun and moon poster was what caught the most attention, though. It was quite an enigma, and Gem was getting confused just by looking at the darn thing. Arlo walked on over to inspect the poster for himself. "A moon pointing towards the sun..." As knowledgeable as he was, even Arlo was having a hard time figuring it out. "Perhaps we should take the poster with us, and look for these symbols in the mine itself."
After Gogmamon explained more about the cameras being walkie-talkies (something that Luneth and Arlo were both impressed by) and the situation with the electricity lower down, the elevator was now ready to use. Luneth, Arlo and Gem would both walk in as well, with Gem deciding that it was now his turn to go inside of Arlo's fur since Amper had hopped out moments prior. "So fluffy...!"

Ultimately, though, the assessment that it didn't matter was right. "It really doesn't, it seems more like a remnant from another time that...has ultimately lost meaning. Besides, the mystery as to what's...in the mine that caused these circumstances sounds more important, so let's give it our all, okay?" Omen was starting to wonder if this is what being something akin to an older sibling was like. Of course, she still had to figure out how to put a pin in that conversation with Luneth...
"She's...gotten used to it. There's a certain sort of tolerance you develop to seeing so much in general. Eventually, nothing is a surprise anymore. Weirdly, some individuals can't...be seen by her foresight. I'm one of them. Maybe others exist, who knows."
Okay, so they had communications with Gogmamon while they looked through the mines--that was good. "Alright. Definitely need to keep this on hand!" Yuuuup. Otherwise, everything seemed clear and cut. "Specs, get the camera, I'm gonna do a sick flip at some point."
With that, Omen gets onto the elevator.

Vergil put a hand to his chin and smiled, liking the elucidation of Amper’s strength. It fits fairly well with the Pulsemon. Being the son of Bezil and Gummy, two of the strongest Digimon he knows, it only made sense that Amper would one day inherit their power as well. But from his account, Amper can only use lightning-based attacks, so he wonders if he’s capable of utilizing fire, ice, or light abilities.
Amper on the other hand tilted his head in response to what Arlo said. “Hidden dragon…” he mused. He turned his eyes to his uncle. “What does he mean by that, zappu?” Vergil then raised a finger to the purple Pulsemon’s chin and began to scratch there nonchalantly.
“You can break it down by him saying that you’re full of surprises,” he simply stated. Amper simply thrummed response, liking the spot that Vergil was petting him at.
Everyone then turned their attention to a poster on the elevator. It was unique to say the least, but nothing that Vergil could make out on. Perhaps there was something deep within the mines that they’ll come across. A puzzle maybe? He didn’t know, so it was best to hang on to it for the time being in case they spot the sun and moon symbols again.
With the elevator now fully operational and declared safe to use, everyone began to board the elevator one by one. Gogmamon directed them to switch the breakers lower if the elevator began to experience issues. “Alright, that’s something to note if we happen to be falling at breakneck speeds. Totally safe, heh, heh…heh.” Vergil’s expression was one out of nervousness. This elevator, along with this mine had been out-of-commission for who knows how long, so he felt that his concerns were validated. He’s seen videos of elevator accidents.
Amper would jump off of Vergil’s shoulder and walk into the elevator, with Vergil getting in last. The young man sat down to the side and held on to one of the support railings. He didn’t want to crash into the ceiling if they started tumbling down at 40 miles per hour or something.

Owen nodded when Luneth mentioned that Skye told about the stripping of the mines. “Yeah, it was that order that was one of the reasons we knew we were screwed.” he found himself saying, some residual anger remaining after all these years after hearing that. All the bombs out of the mines, ready for the final push. But he prevented himself from saying further when he realized he was saying toxic feelings from his previous life. No, that wasn’t right, that was over, he had to focus on his new life now. Leave all the DWR civil war nonsense in the past.
Thankfully there was a quick subject to switch to. “Yeah, take that poster with us, its meaning might be apparent to us later.” Owen agreed with Arlo. Besides, it was just a piece of paper, not a heavy thing.
Eventually, all were positioned in the elevator, and it was activated to lower to the first floor. Owen and Rory were both rather nervous as the platform lowered, but, it seemed that Gogmamon’s team were correct in declaring it safe. There was no impediment or danger in their descent, and after about a minute, they arrived safely on the first floor, where they were awaited by a Gotsumon and Golbimon from Gogmamon’s exploration party.
“The way looks clear from here, boss!” the Goblimon declared. “No threats detected, and we got the lights working for the corridor forward. But orders prevent us testing the way forward, you’re on your own here.”
“Okay. Thanks for your effort.” Owen replied to them, not being sarcastic in the slightest, he knew they played a risk in going this far down themselves. On this level, there were mine rail tracks leading up to the elevator, and the way ahead was lit up by old lights, thankfully most of them still active, but age had worn out about a quarter of them.
“Well then, that’s our path ahead, let’s get on with it.” Owen declared, and led the party into the main mine shaft forward. One feature of the mine around them was that there were crystals in the walls around them that reflected different colors from the activated electric lights. It made something of a beautiful sight, all these different colored rocks flashing the colors of the rainbow.
“Ah, an innovation of the miners.” Owen remarked. “It seems they styled certain reflective rocks so they’d provide more light in these passages.”
Rory made a whistle noise to indicate he was impressed. Their path forward was clearly lit regardless. Eventually, they reached a spot of darkness, but Owen quickly found one of the ‘breakers’ mentioned early and switched it, making more electric lights turn on ahead.
“Mr. Owen… I’m curious, how did these mines work?” Rory felt himself compelled to ask. “I mean, Digizoid is meant to be a rare and strong mineral, yet how did they get it out of mines like this?”
“Ah, good question.” Owen replied, as they found the next main passage to follow in their exploration. Around them were lights and reflective panels that lit the way forward. “Mining the digizoid from here was pretty much step one of ten. First was getting the digizoid ore out from the ground and transported to the surface for processing.”
“How was the digizoid ore processed, Mr. Owen?” Rory asked, honestly curious. Owen paused a few moments before responding.
“Okay. So, say you have in your paw a lump of Digizoid Ore.” the Gaomon began. “5% of it is Digizoid Metal, which you want, while 95% of it is just dirt waste. So you want to make a way to make that Digizoid Metal as close to 100% as you can, right?”
“Oh… yeah, that makes sense.” Rory said, hesitantly, picturing the scenario. “So how did they do that?”
“The first step was crushing up the rocks as finely as possible.” Owen explained as they proceeded further. “That way, the digizoid metal could be better separated from the non-digizoid junk, or ‘tailings’ as the miners called them.”
“Er… sorry, Mr. Owen, I don’t really follow…” Rory admitted as they proceeded further. Thankfully the shaft was well lit, so they didn’t have to pay too much attention to their surroundings at the moment.
“Okay. Say you have 100 marbles in a bowl.” Owen explained as they continued, watching their steps down from the electric lights. Soon they came to a point where there was no light forward, but there was a lever nearby labeled ‘BREAKER A’. Owen flipped it, and with an echoing snapping noise, lights ahead burst back to life. “95 marbles in that bowl are useless to you, but the remaining 5 are precious to you. How do you extract those 5 marbles without risking wasting them, while at the same time, not mistaking them for the 95 waste marbles you don’t want?”
“Uh…” Rory was honestly stumped by this answer. “I… really don’t know, Mr. Owen, that’s a tough one.”
“That’s okay, mate. Maybe our friends and family here have an idea?” Owen said, as they moved further into the tunnel, hoping that they could use this as a means to make them all less nervous about proceeding further into the abandoned mineshaft.

Luneth had to process what Omen said for a bit, which meant that Omen succeeded in putting a pin in that conversation. So, her mother can't see certain beings in her future visions, with Omen being one of those said beings. His mind tried to look for a possible solution as to why that was, despite it not even mattering at this moment considering that the group had a mine to explore. Luneth was the type to get lost in his own thoughts, though...
Owen told Luneth that it was that order that the DWR army realized that they were screwed. He didn't say much on the matter, but Luneth could tell that Owen wasn't having a good time reliving this part of his days as Jaelin. "Would you like to talk about something else, Mr. Owen?" Luneth asked. "It can be about anything not related to the DWR... to get your mind off of the subject." Luneth enjoyed speaking with Owen a lot, and it hurt him that the Gaomon was looking more and more angry the longer he discussed the DWR civil war.
After Arlo had taken the sun and moon poster and put it in his chest fur for safe keeping, he along with Luneth and Gem (the latter of which still riding in Arlo's fur) entered the elevator along with everyone else. The others seemed a bit worried about the elevator's stability, Vergil especially so. He was even sitting down by the side and holding onto one of the support railings. Noticing this, Arlo would walk over and sit down next to Vergil on the elevator.
"If something was going wrong with the elevator, then I would be able to hear it and warn you all in advance," the Angoramon said, trying to calm Vergil down a bit. "I trust Gogmamon's team. And in the off chance that something bad does indeed happen, then I can promise you that we will protect you."
"Yeah!" Gem agreed, giving Vergil an adorable looking smile.
It would only take a minute for the elevator to reach the first floor, where they were greeted by a Gotsumon and Goblimon from Gogmamon's team. They had tested the lights and searched for dangers ahead a bit, but were restricted by their orders to continue any further. It made sense, since going further was why this team was here to begin with. Luneth, Arlo and Gem would wave the two of them goodbye before following Owen and the others down the path.
One thing that was evident from the get-go was the fact that the crystals in the walls were reflecting different colors from the lights, flashing different colors of the rainbow. Gem flew out of Arlo's fur and looked at these lights with a wide-eyed expression. "Luneth! Rory! These things are so shiny!"
"Yes they are indeed, Gem," Luneth said to his baby brother with a smile on his face.
"I never expected any mine to look quite like this," Arlo said as he looked around, taking pictures of the area. "I can't help but be even more curious as to why it was abandoned now."
Owen and Rory then started talking about how Digizoid ore was extracted in the first place, with Owen using a metaphor involving a bowl of marbles as an example. 100 marbles in the bowl, with only five that you care about... how do you determine the valuable from the worthless, while also not wasting them? Rory didn't seem to know the answer, so Owen opened the question up to the others.
"I'm no geologist, but I can give it my best shot," Arlo said, deciding to go first. "Assuming it is like a bowl of marbles, the obvious solution would be to dig your hand into the bowl to take out the marbles that you want. Of course doing it that way will lead to a mess and possibly cause marbles to spill out of the bowl, so using tools would more than likely be for the best. As for not mistaking them for waste marbles... I suppose that would depend on the marble color, or Digizoid color, in question."
Meanwhile, Luneth would wander over to Vergil and begin talking with him. "I noticed that my friend over there is getting along well with you and your partner," the Hackmon said, referring to Arlo. "It might be for the best if we got to know each other a bit better, as well. My name's Luneth... wait, I already told you that, didn't I?" Luneth immediately began sweating bullets, as he just let a dork moment slip out when he was trying to be courteous. He just hoped Rory and Gem didn't notice.

Even hundreds of years later, the echoes of the past still left a toll on the present. Omen may have been much younger than most here, but even she could tell such. "One way would be running it through a sieve, right? Or filtering it out." That was one answer to the question of how to approach Digizoid refining.
Otherwise, there was a sense of wonder about her as she wandered through the abandoned, yet...strangely pretty mine with family and friends. "Arlo's got a good point, too. You'd need to spot the qualities amid the marbles you want in order to effectively know what it is you're looking for."
Omen otherwise didn't ask much more questions. She felt at least one would be answered once they had gotten to the end of the mine. And she didn't want to really repeat herself, either. "...Another thought. Don't some Digimon generate digizoid when they evolve into certain forms?"

Despite Arlo and Gem’s reassurance that everything would be fine, Vergil remained nervous as the platform continued its descent. From what they’ve learned, these mines have been abandoned for many years, hence why all the machinery and equipment are rusted and have undergone weathering. So what are the chances that the cables or the steam engine that propelled the elevator shaft were to suddenly snap or stop working, either stopping them in their tracks, or plunging them to their dooms? Either way, Vergil tightens his grip on the support handle.
Kind of guilbe to put too much trust in a team that only tested the elevator once and gave it the green light.
Eventually after a minute that felt like the longest minute of his life, they arrived on the first floor, where a few members from Gogmamon’s teams were awaiting them. The way forward was clear of any potential dangers as evident by the lights that were on, but they were prevented from continuing any further. That made sense. It wasn’t their job to risk themselves; they’ve done plenty enough help already. Vergil and Amper then proceeded to follow the others into the main mine shaft forward.
The shimmering crystals that refracted the different colors of light were a sight to behold. Vergil couldn’t help but whistle alongside with Rory, indicating that he was impressed as well. Amper on the other hand was awestruck.
“Ooooaaah! Uncle Specs, look!” Amper raced to one of the crystals that was close to his height level, looking at all of the pretty colors in the same way he looked at all of the candies at the candy shop back in the City of Y’s. Vergil couldn’t help but smile.
“You know, I bet this would look even cooler if you charge one of them up,” Vergil remarked, placing a hand on the Pulsemon’s shoulder.
Amper tiled his head curiously, “Why’s that, zappu?”
“Ehh, it’d be easier to show you instead of putting you to sleep with a wordy explanation.” Vergil guided Amper’s paw and extended his finger towards the crystal they were looking at. “Now just send a small amount of electricity at it. Not too much since you'll zap me if you do."
Amper nodded, and with both arms, began to send a small wave of green static electricity onto the crystal prism. The clear crystal began to glow green, and soon enough, the light began to bounce from one prism to the next, making all of the crystals flash into a vibrant, green light show all throughout. Amper gasped in awe, unable to describe what was happening. Once he stopped charging the prism with his energy, the light slowly began to dim until it began to refract the light from the lamps above—the others shortly followed suit.
“Uncle Specs, Uncle Specs, that was so amazing, zappu!” Amper exclaimed, holding Vergil’s hand as he jumped up and down. He turned to Owen and quickly raced to him, holding his hand as well. “Grandpa Owen, did you see how amazing that was, zappu? I didn’t know that I could do something like that, zappu! I wish Vinny was here to see this, zappu!”
Once the spectacle was over and their path forward was illuminated, Owen and Rory began to discuss how Digizoid was mined. Listening to Owen’s explanation, Vergil was surprised at how knowledgeable he was about mineral processing. Of course, since his major was Geography, one of the elective classes he had a subject talking all about minerals. At first, it sounded interesting, but then after consecutive lectures, it began to bore him and put him to sleep. To think that a Digimon was so enthralled by a human subject, well…it simply had him in awe.
As he was listening, Luneth began to converse with him, mistakenly introducing himself once again. Vergil paid no mind, and looked at him curiously.
“Alright...Luneth, was it? What do you want to know about me? Full name? Birthday? Where am I from? Favorite hobbies of mine, or anything in particular?” Vergil replied with a relaxed expression. It was going to take a minute before Owen asked if he knew the answer, so he thought it’d be a nice way to kill time until then.

Owen appreciated Luneth’s offer to change the subject. While he was prepared to do so himself, it was that kind of mindfulness that he liked. “It’s okay, I’m good, mate.” was all he said further on the matter.
Once they reached the first lower floor, the group was taken in by the crystals. They were very pretty. Owen was reminded of the crystals of the Shining Sea by their appearance. Perhaps there was a link there somewhere?
Amper was then convinced by Vergil to light one up with his electricity. Owen was curious about what would happen, so he said nothing and watched them carry out the feat. And sure enough, once Amper discharged his electricity, a chain reaction of light seemed to occur afterwards. Both Owen and Rory were impressed.
“Yep, mate, that’s pretty nifty what you did there.” Owen praised his grandson. “And you’ve showed us something useful too, these crystals seem to be aligned so they light the whole place up, even with minimal electricity. Thankfully for now we have the wires from the surface generator to go by, but, we’ll see how this goes on deeper down.”
As they walked down the tunnel, Owen listened to Arlo’s answer first. “Yeah, you’re on the right track there.” he said.
Then he listened to Omen’s follow-up answer, “Yep, you’re going to want to know exactly what you’re after with mining.” he replied. Then Omen raised the point that quite often digimon evolving produced digizoid themselves. As a digimon that had done that regularly, with his mega form MirageGaogamon wearing a suit of Blue Digizoid armor, Owen understood where his granddaughter was coming from.
“Well, there’s a difference between mined digizoid and evolved digizoid.” he explained. “Like, when I evolve to MirageGaogamon, the digizoid I have is mine alone. It’s part of my data matrix, so to say. But the digizoid from mines such as this is free for any other digimon to use. It could be crafted into a digizoid sword for an infantrymon, or a shield for a guard mon. Nice to see that you’re thinking along those lines, Omen, you seem quite sharp there.” he meant that as a compliment.
As they continued to the next breaker room, Owen would continue as he activated the lights to the next area. The breaker lever snapped into activation and the lights and crystals ahead lit up. He supposed he’d best conclude his talk on how digizoid was mined and refined.
“What’s most important is that you home in on the properties of what you’re mining.” Owen explained. “Let’s go back to the 100 marbles. Let’s say… roughly half of them float on water, but the other half sink. But the marbles you’re after all sink in water, digizoid is a dense metal after all. So, if you put the marbles in water, you immediately increase your chances of picking the 5 marbles you want from 5 in 100 to 5 in 50, by removing the floating ones as waste.”
Rory’s blue eyes widened as he began to understand what Owen was talking about.
“So… the mining process is all about removing the waste and purifying what you need?” he asked.
“Yep, you’re on the right track there.” Owen said. “Say the 5 marbles you want are non-magnetic, so you run a magnet over the remaining 50 marbles. 20 of them stick to the magnet. That leaves you with 5 out of 30 marbles. And the processes continue again and again until you fully separate the 5 marbles you want from the 95 that you don’t want. And that’s the key of mine processing.”
“You sure know a lot about mining, Mr. Owen.” Rory stated, rather impressed. “Were you a miner at one point?”
“No, but my dad was.” Owen answered, grinning. “I guess I learned a lot from him.”
“Your dad, Sten?” Rory asked, tilting his head a little. “I thought he was a soldier.”
“Ah, no, my other dad.” Owen explained. “Bredis. He was a Stiffilmon. He worked as a foreman in mines like this, although he tended to the ones in the North rather than Western ones like this, so I doubt he was involved in this mine.”
Owen felt some emotions building up as he spoke about his other parent, who he had not yet met in this new world. Heck, he didn’t know if he was living still, or even remembered him. But he had to stay strong for the others here.
Before long, they came to the third breaker. Owen was about to switch it, but as he saw it up close, he hesitated. The breaker was in fact totally broken. Its metal was buckled and cracked, with exposed wires sparking from their connection from the previous breaker. It looked like it had been smashed by a blunt weapon.
“Oh… looks like our light supply’s ended.” the Gaomon remarked.
“Should we let Gogmamon know, Mr. Owen?” Rory asked, quickly. Owen agreed, then let the Coronamon do the honors as he opened the communication on his camera, after taking pictures of the damaged breaker.
“Hello, Mr. Gogmamon? We’ve reached the third breaker. It’s too badly damaged to operate. We’ve taken pictures of it.” Rory explained to their overseer.
”Hm. Unfortunate. Are you able to continue otherwise?” Gogmamon asked in reply. ”Also did you encounter anything hazardous so far?”
“I think so, there’s no other obstacles, and we can light our way with our hats and powers.” Rory answered. “And no, our way has been clear so far.”
”Then please continue. Let me know of any further obstacles. If you say it’s safe, I’ll send a team down to see what they can do about the damaged breaker. If you encounter an obstacle, return as soon as you can.”
“Understood.” Rory answered, then looked to the others on what to do next. Owen paused for a moment, he noticed that Rory’s speech was slightly slower and slurred than before, as though he had been awake for much longer than he knew him to be. But given that he didn’t see any immediate reason for this, he didn’t feel the need to follow up on the matter.
“Well then, I suppose we continue in the dark.” Owen said, switching the light of his mining hat on. “Best hold your lightning powers for now until we need them, mate.” he added to Amper, who might have been eager to make the following crystals glow up too.
Rory meanwhile narrowed his eyes as he looked into the darkened tunnel ahead. He might be mistaken by the lights from behind, but he thought he could see something of note. “Mr. Owen… I think I can see some kind of light ahead.” he said. “Just around the corner there, the crystals are glowing a little.”
Owen peered in the same direction, and he agreed on those findings. “Alright, then let’s approach with caution, and pay attention to where you step.” he advised, then continued to walk past the broken Breaker 3.

Probably one of the most magical moments for the group came when Vergil had convinced Amper to give a little bit of an electric spark to the crystals engraved on the walls. Once the Pulsemon did this, it started a chain reaction of light as the electricity passed through the multi-colored crystals. Arlo took pictures of this phenomenon while Luneth and Gem looked up in awe, a big smile present on the Gammamon's face.
"Amper, you're so cool!" Gem cheered as he flew over to his new Pulsemon friend. "You were all like 'zap' and then the rocks started glowing and everything!"
Luneth chuckled a bit as he watched his youngest brother be all bubbly and excited with Amper. It made him happy that Gem was having such a good time meeting new friends and exploring this mine with everyone. It was the little moments like that that would stay in the Hackmon's mind forever... he felt incredibly lucky to have friends and family like this.
While Owen and the others were discussing Digizoid mining, Luneth and Vergil would start up a discussion, with the human asking what Luneth wanted to know about him. "All of that info would be nice, really. I may be a warrior, but I enjoy learning as well. Though I would like to know... is Amper your partner?" Luneth asked. "I overheard you mention a 'Vee' and a 'Gummy' earlier... are they your actual partners? And if they are... why are they not here?" He had never heard of a Tamer going somewhere in the Digital World without their partner, not by choice at least. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to Luneth at all... was there something going on with Vergil and his partner(s)?
Back with the mining discussion, Omen brought up a good point about Digimon that generate digizoid when they evolve. Owen explained that it was a part of their digital matrix, so it could only belong to the Digimon in question, while digizoid from mines could be freely used by any Digimon as an extra sword or a shield. Arlo nodded with a smile when Owen said he was on the right track with his explanation, and even expanded on it by stating multiple ways to weed out the useless metals to get what you want, depending on the qualities of the digizoid you were aiming for. "A mining operation is far more elaborate than I was anticipating," Arlo said as he rubbed his chin. It made sense that Owen knew so much though, considering that his father was actually a miner himself.
The group continued on for a bit until they came along to the third breaker, which looked like it had been smashed to pieces by some kind of blunt object. That seemed like a bit of a warning sign to Luneth and Arlo, considering that this was clearly intentionally destroyed. "I don't like the looks of this," Luneth said, placing a paw on his gut as he got a dreaded feeling in his stomach.
"What happened to it?" Gem asked as he flew up to the destroyed breaker. "Why is the light thingy all smashed and kaboomed up?"
"Someone seems to have destroyed it a long time ago," Arlo theorized as he, Luneth and Gem all turned on their helmet lights. "We still have our lights from our helmets, at the very least."
Rory had the right idea to contact Gogmamon and inform him about what was going on. But something about Rory's speech pattern seemed off to Luneth. He knew his brother to be high energy almost all the time, but it was still morning and here he was, sounding like he was... well, almost tired. That dreaded feeling in Luneth's stomach increased, and he felt he had to at least check up on his brother. "Rory, are you feeling alright?" Luneth asked as he walked beside his brother. "I could not help but notice that you seem... well, tired. Do you need to take a break?" But why WOULD Rory be feeling like this, is the real question...
Before the group continued walking, Rory would be the first to spot some form of light coming from ahead, emanating from some crystals, by the looks of it. Owen warned everyone to watch their steps as they headed forward, which made sense considering they were in the dark. "Gem, stay close to me, alright?" Luneth said to Gem, who nodded before floating forward along with the others.

At Amper's thought and subsequent action, there was suddenly a lot of light! "...Hot damn, that was pretty cool." Omen spoke, quite plainly. There was a quiet 'ooooh...' noted at the difference between personal Digizoid and Digizoid found in the earth. Right, that made sense...
Else it would be far more widespread. At the end of the lights, as well as the damaged breaker, Omen made note of the damages as well as any other 'clues' that one could find from the environment. Not only did they still have the helmet lights, but the Wispmon herself did have a natural light source in the form of her eyes and stomach.
Really, they weren't wanting for that.
At the note of more crystals ahead, Omen trudged forward to peek around the corner. She was careful not to touch anything on accident, though it wasn't like that was very hard to do. Wispmon had no arms. And her tail was being used to keep a hold of the camera.
"What have we here..."

Owen explained to Amper that the crystals were aligned that way on the walls so that even the smallest spark of static electricity would light them up one by one, like a conduit. Amper gave an audible gasp and shook his head. He didn’t have the slightest idea why a few zappy zaps would make the crystals light up like that, but he’ll pretend as he does.
Amper was met with further praise by Gem and Omen, making the furry Pulsemon’s face flush “I-It was pretty amazing, zappu.” He fidgeted the fringe on the top of his head, looking at Vergil who was eying him with a smirk. “W-what?”
Realizing that Amper easily becomes a mess when he gets any praise, Vergil began to chuckle as he walked down into the tunnel, confusing Amper even more.
“H-hey! What’s so funny, zappu?!” Amper shouted, running swiftly towards his uncle's side with his fist raised up.
As they made their way towards the next breaker room, conversations went on between the group. Owen and Arlo continued their talk about mining Digizoid. Luneth would question if Amper was his partner. Vergil shook his head.
“Na, but it does look like he’s my partner Digimon, so I don’t fault you for thinking that,” Vergil replied. “But yeah, Vee and Gummy are my partner Digimon, both a V-mon and a Gumdramon respectively. They’re not here because the timing of this job overlapped with their current responsibilities today: Gummy’s helping his boyfriend with things at the City of Y’s, and Vee is helping his friend Luke and his folks out at the Village of Beginnings, taking care of the baby Digimon and whatnot.”
“And that’s when I asked my Dad and Papa if I could tag along with my Uncle Specs on this mission, zappu.” Amper added. “Papa was A-OK with it , but Dad wasn’t sure since I’ve never been on something like this. But Uncle Specs reassured that Grandpa Owen will keep us and everyone here safe since he’s really, really, really strong, zappu. So strong that he could beat a baddie Digimon by just looking at them!”
“Yup, that’s basically the gist of it.” Vergil concluded. “Nothing damning or serious if you were concerned.”
As they continued to the third breaker room, they discovered that the breaker had been smashed up, as evident by the caved-in panel and the exposed wiring sparking with electricity. Rory proceeded to inform Gogmamon about it, and as he did, Vergil examined the breaker carefully. Looks like someone deliberately did this, but why?
Seeing as the way forward was shrouded in darkness, Amper gave an eager “zappu…” as his hands began to discharge electricity, enough to make the crystals on the walls light up again. Owen then advises him to hold off from doing that until they really need it, making the Pulsemon grumble disappointingly as he lowers his hands down.
Rory then pointed out the light at the end of the tunnel—a faint shimmering glow from the crystals. Owen instructed everyone to approach with caution, but since the tunnels didn’t look all that dangerous for the most part, and with a combination of the Pulsemon’s restlessness, Amper decided not to heed his grandpa and instead proceeded to sprint into the dark tunnel.
“Last one there is a rotten Digitamamon, zappu!” Amper said.
“Amper, wait!” Vergil shouted. He sighed, taking off his helmet to use as a flashlight and proceeded to chase after him, shining his light towards the ground so he didn’t trip on any rocks. “Ughh, kids…”

Owen was glad that Arlo seemed to appreciate how complicated mining operations were. He would have told more, but they had a task at hand, and that was to tell Gogmamon of their discovery of the broken breaker.
As Rory reported their findings, Luneth asked if he was feeling alright. Rory immediately shook off the notion that he was tired.
“No, Luneth, I’m fine, really.” he said, although he did feel that something was off a little. But still he didn’t want to hold up their mission through vibes alone.
Owen was glad to see Omen keep on to the task, keeping her camera ready. He was proud of his grandchildrens’ conduct so far. He then listened to Vergil’s explanation as to why Vee and Gummy weren’t here. And he was already familiar with the reason why. Gummy was with Bezil in Ys, and Vee was with Luke in the Village of Beginnings. He hoped they were going okay with their lives. Still though, he felt really proud that Vergil was going fine with this, having his grandson as his digimon partner here. Even though Owen had pledged to be his foster father, he knew that there was a long path for him to be fully comfortable as family.
Then they reached the broken breaker. It was a shared concern that everyone seemed to be disturbed by its deliberate damage. But repairs would be on the way, and the way ahead seemed clear. Thus Amper rushed off ahead, leaving Owen in mild shock.
“Amper! Wait up!” Owen called, and he and Rory chased after him. It was best that they kept together.
They soon turned the corner and found the way ahead well lit up with a strange orange light. Almost so bright that he thought they no longer needed the lights on their mining hats, but didn’t feel the need to tell them to turn them off. The light was coming from rocks in the walls, and it made him feel strange.
“What is this…?” the Gaomon asked out loud, peering closely at the source of the light from the tunnel walls. It was veins of some glowing orange crystal formations. And the longer he looked, he felt something of a frustration build up inside him. Initially he turned to Amper, wanting to berate him for running off like that, but held his tongue. He didn’t want to growl at his grandson, he knew it would be wrong to take out this sudden anger on him.
Then Rory gave a long yawn, and suddenly Owen turned his attention to him.
“Why are you tired, Rory?” Owen asked, sharply. “I told you yesterday that we were going on an important mission. Were you going off dating again?”
“No, Mr. Owen, I didn’t-” Rory began. But Owen felt like he was homing in on the truth.
“Don’t lie to me!” Owen snarled, the orange light beginning to seemingly pulse through him. “This is just like that time when you snuck off out of class to snuggle with Veemon behind the equipment shed! You’re always doing this, you just can’t help yourself!”
Rory had been intimidated up until that moment, where he felt so outraged at these accusations that he snarled back at his superior officer.
“Mr. Owen!! Get a freaking hold of yourself!! I did NOT do that! I had a full night’s sleep and was fully prepared for this mission! I don’t know why I yawned just now! I…” he paused as he looked around his surroundings. “I… think this light is doing something to us. Mr. Owen, we should pull back…”
Owen was about to roar back at that, but deep down, he knew Rory was speaking the truth. Something was doing this to them. And acting out in anger was not something he was likely to do.
“...agreed, let’s retreat. This isn’t right.” Owen said, now noticing the effects of the orange light. “Rory, you seem to be able to resist it, please pick up a sample and cover it. And… sorry, you’re right, I was out of line.”
Rory was relieved to hear that. It had honestly scared him to hear Owen lay these unfounded accusations on him. But still, it didn’t explain why he felt so tired at this moment. “Let’s just get back, Mr. Owen” he said. Then he did as he was told, collected a sample of the glowing orange rock in the wall, and promptly took off his tunic to bundle and cover it. Owen nodded with approval, then turned to the rest of the party, hoping they weren’t too affected by this strange light.
From the orange light of this part of the mineshaft, every digimon would feel a heightened level of aggression.

During the walk to the breaker room, Vergil told Luneth that Amper was not in fact his partner, but rather the son of one of his actual partners, Gummy the Gumdramon. He and Amper both explained that Vergil's partners were busy helping others with other matters at the moment, as this job overlapped with their other responsibilities, so Amper asked if he could tag along with his "Uncle Specs."
"I believe I understand now," Luneth said to Vergil. "I cannot say that it is something I'm used to, however. My father has a partner, and every time I see him, I see his partner as well. I cannot recall them ever separating to this degree in all of my time knowing them."
Then the group came up to the breaker room, where Arlo was beginning to take pictures of the destroyed power breaker, believing that it would help to have pictures to refer to later. When asked about his tiredness, Rory insisted to Luneth that he really was fine. Luneth didn't quite believe him, as he wasn't one to just get tired like that, but he decided to not press the issue further for the time being. "Alright. But do not hesitate to let me or Mr. Owen know if anything changes, okay?"
Despite Rory's claims, Luneth just could not help but be worried about Rory. He was his little brother, and he was usually so full of energy. Something about this place just wasn't right...
Amper had rushed off ahead of the group, claiming that the last one there would be a rotten Digitamamon. "I don't wanna be a Digitamamon!" Gem called out as he flew forward, following Amper.
"Gem, I told you to stay close to me!" Luneth called out to his little brother as he and Arlo joined Vergil, Owen, and Rory in chasing after the two of them. They turned the corner and found the remaining path very well lit up with orange light, to the point that they didn't even need the lights on their helmets turned on anymore. Luneth, Arlo, and Gem would all look around at the veins of orange crystal formations that were covering the walls.
"Amper! Omen! Look at these!" Gem said, calling his two friends to look over at a particularly impressive orange crystal formation on one of the walls. "They look so pretty!"
"Extraordinary..." Arlo said, taking pictures of these crystals as he and the others were observing them. It wouldn't be long before the three of them -- Luneth, Gem, and Arlo -- would begin to feel the rage and frustration build up inside of them the longer they looked at these crystals. Arlo would realize this first, and he stopped taking pictures immediately in order to focus his mental energy to keep himself calm. This... this doesn't feel right at all...!
However, the row of dominoes would fall as soon as Rory had yawned. Without warning, Owen snapped at him, claiming that Rory would be irresponsible enough to go out dating and snuggling, staying up late the night before. Such an outburst was sure to catch everyone's attention. Upon hearing this, Luneth's eyes furrowed as the orange light began pulsing through him, as well. He ran over to Owen and Rory and stood in between them, glaring daggers at the Gaomon.
"What is your malfunction?!" Luneth angrily asked his superior. "You truly believe that my brother would be that irresponsible, Mr. Owen? Or even lie to you about it? I thought you were better than that, but clearly I was wrong about you!"
"I hate you, Mr. Owen!" Gem yelled at Owen as well, also having orange light pulsing through him. "Anyone who talks to my older brother like that is nothing but a big bully!"
Thankfully, it was Rory who managed to keep his senses and point out that the light may have been doing something to everyone. Like Owen, Luneth wanted to argue about that, but he too felt like his brother had a point. Owen ordered that the group should retreat, and also asked Rory to gather some samples of the crystals since he was somehow able to resist them. While Owen did apologize for the outburst, Luneth wasn't sure if he was going to be ready to forgive Owen like that. Rage-induced or not, there was likely some truth to what he said to Rory just then.
Before he and Gem turned back, Luneth noticed that Arlo was standing still, his arms crossed as he looked deep in thought. The Hackmon carefully walked over to his companion. "Arlo, are you feeli-"
"Don't talk to me," Arlo said in an ominous but still calm voice. "Your brother is right, these crystals are affecting us somehow."
"That is why I came to get you; Owen has ordered us to retreat."
"I heard. You go on without me, at least for the moment, and I'll follow close behind. I don't want to take any risks of accidentally yelling at you right now."
"Alright, suit yourself, then," Luneth would say almost passive-aggressively as he followed the others back to where they came from. Luneth had to wonder, though... why wasn't Rory affected by them?
