There were a number of strange/weird feelings running through Omen as she maneuvered around the mines with the group. And they all seemed to begin when they got the blue light...Maybe the DWR had figured out something interesting pertaining to that. Maybe. Yet if the blue light was causing Rory to feel strange...
Amper may have just caused things to get so much worse, given the orange light seemed to start driving people to a point of aggression. Wanton disrespect that was quite frankly extremely uncalled for. Disrespect that, quite frankly, irked her. There was a point where Omen would probably have been affected by the orange light, too, but truth be told?
Whatever was about to come out of the FUMING Wispmon's mouth was something that Luneth and Gem had brought upon themselves. "You pretentious fucking brats. What idiot dropped your Digitama? Your parents? You think that's being a 'bully, Gem?' Then you know as little as your brother does. Because I have said FAR worse than what grandpa said to people more deserving." Oh. Oh dear.
"I'm going to make this clear once, and only once. NEITHER OF YOU get to speak to my grandfather like that. Not now. Not ever. So, why don't you shut your fucking faces and stay away from the crystals. Because I don't need them inciting you guys to suddenly have the guts to become the world's most narcissistic shitlords on top of having to be the only sane person in this mine who isn't Grandpa or Vergil."
...Y'know. Rory hadn't seemed affected by the orange wave of being a fucking asshole. So, operating off of a hunch...? Omen opted to move closer to him and the blue light. "Amper, please, don't do that again. I don't want to know what the rest of the crystals are going to do if you run a current through them, and...I don't know what documentation exists on them."
Probably better to just keep moving.

Vergil would be joined by the rest of the party as they chased Amper and Gem. This was the last thing the young man anticipated, but it was to be somewhat expected when dealing with a Digimon with so much energy like him.
They soon turned into a corner, and the way ahead became bathed in bright orange light—so bright in fact that Vergil had to shield his eyes for a few moments until he properly acclimated to it. The group reached an area with veins of orange, glowing crystallized materials that occupied fissures in the rock wall.
“Interesting…” Vergil mused to himself. “From the looks of it, they were formed fairly quickly during the deformation by precipitation of minerals and rocks, causing fractures which were filled up during the deposition period. But…vein fractures aren’t supposed to glow like this. So weird, but this must be what they were mining down here in its hay day.”
Amper was amazed at how the crystals on the walls were shining. Peering close to one of the embedded crystals, the Pulsemon couldn’t help but touch it with his claw. But as he did, his smile soon dropped as he felt a lot of negative energy begin to build up inside. He shook his head, trying his best to dismiss the feelings, but the more he did, the more annoyed he felt.
And without warning, the group began to sick on one another like a pack of wolves, catching Vergil completely off-guard. “What the hell…?” He was caught in the middle of a war of attrition: Owen was getting up Rory’s case for being tired, Luneth and Gem grilled Owen for snapping at Rory in such a manner, and Omen completely snapped at the two brothers for daring to talk to Owen like that.
“The fuck’s gotten into everyone?” Vergil tried his best to intervene in their bickering, trying his best to get everyone’s attention but to no avail. Even Arlo wasn’t approachable as he stood in place with his arms crossed.
He turned to Amper, seeing him shake in frustration from behind. “Hey…are you ok, little guy?” Vergil gently asked, reaching a hand out to him. As he was about to touch his shoulder, Vergil was met with an immediate zap to his hand. He yelped in surprise, reeling his hand back.
The Pulsemon was then immediately surrounded by a cackling electrical aura, making Vergil take two steps back.
“Yo! Amper! Talk to me! What’s going on with you?” Vergil pleaded. Amper turned around and glared, clenching his teeth in frustration. He was on edge, so the best course of action was to talk him down
“Just take deep breaths man…deep breaths. Just follow my breathing.”
Amper, while trying his best not to snap at Vergil, listened, taking slow, labored breaths alongside his uncle.
“Good. That’s good, you’re going great.” Vergil got on one knee. ”Now just…tell me what’s wrong at your own pace.”
“I…I feel really, really, really angry, zappu,” Amper said slowly, growing increasingly frustrated. "So many bad vibes...and it all feels so wrong. But I want…TO EXPLODE AT EVERYONE!”
Vergil raised his arms up, preparing to take the full brunt of the output that Amper built up. But it didn’t come. Instead, the energy that Amper had fizzled out completely as he approached Vergil, away from the glow of the crystals.
The furry Pulsemon fell into Vergil’s arms and clung to him slightly. Vergil took a moment to process what just happened as he stood back up, holding him in his arms.
“I’m so tired, zappu…” Amper closed his eyes against Vergil’s chest.
Vergil took a look at his surroundings as Rory pointed out that the veins are behind this sudden madness. But strangely, Rory wasn’t affected by it all that much.
Owen ordered the group to retreat; Vergil nodded and quickly followed suit with everyone else. Omen pleaded with Amper to never run off like that again. The Pulsemon, too tired to talk, only nodded his head as he buried his face into Vergil’s chest.

Owen felt his fists clench at Luneth’s words. Was he seriously picking a fight with him? Then Gem joined in angrily, and then Omen launched a rather impressive tirade against them too. However, he knew deep down that something was drastically wrong here. They had been talking peacefully earlier, but now they were almost at each other’s throats. There was something about the light from the crystals in this chamber that just didn’t sit right.
Part of the Gaomon wanted to retaliate. He was the leader here, how dare they speak to him like that. But he knew he shouldn’t speak what he wanted to say right now. Not when he had just lashed out at Rory only to be rightfully put in his place. But he didn’t know what to say to de-fuse the situation with the angry Omen either.
Omen then moved towards Rory. Owen noticed for the first time that Rory was wearing the old DWR helmet with the blue light now. And if he looked closely, he could see the light somewhat… repelling the orange where he turned it.
Then he gasped as Amper raged too, seemingly about to explode with rage. Owen made a step to his grandson, but all he did was collapse into Vergil’s arms.
Rory was watching all this too, his blue eyes almost tearing up with disbelief as he watched his family and friends seem to go mad. Then he realized in this moment, when Omen moved close to him, that he was probably in the best position to say this. He didn’t want his brothers to fight Owen and his grandchildren. He had to speak up now.
“Everybody BE QUIET!!” Rory shouted at the lot of them, with a voice that was loud, clear and firm. “We’re under the effect of something! Nobody say a single word until we return to the breaker! We’re family and friends here and we’re on a mission! Nobody forget that!”
Owen opened his mouth to say something, but closed it, not trusting his tongue to speak what he wanted. All he did was give a nod of approval at the Coronamon. Even though the pulses of rage were flowing through his body, he was trained and mature enough to not act on them and make things worse. Also Rory’s voice in that moment was very slightly intimidating, reminding him of a time long ago when being chewed out by senior ranks.
Rory gave a short smile back at Owen, but things were still tense. He agreed with Amper, there were bad vibes everywhere here. Also he noted that Vergil didn’t seem to be affected either. He wanted to know why that was.
“Mr. Owen, do you have an idea on what to do here?” Rory asked. Owen nodded again. “Okay, good. We have a plan to move forward. Let’s all just call a truce for now, alright? We don’t want to fail this mission.”
Thinking back to the smashed-in breaker, Rory now had a feeling he knew how it had been broken. With digimon becoming so angry in the light of these strange crystals, it was no surprise that it had been destroyed in a deliberate act of violence.
Hopefully everyone would settle down here and retreat for the moment. “We need to report this to Mr. Gogmamon too.” Rory added as an afterthought, but they should only do so once they had checked themselves before they wrecked themselves.

Things were just going from bad to worse. From Luneth and Gem's perspective, they just saw that Rory was being unfairly yelled at by someone they thought they respected, so they were stepping in and defending their brother from their superior's awful words. That of course made Owen even angrier, but then Omen stepped up and spouted out some even more hurtful words at the two brothers, words that were even worse than what Owen was just saying to Rory. And Luneth wasn't having any of that.
"We're the pretentious brats?! Look in a mirror once in a while. Who the hell do you think you are, stepping into someone's business all willy-nilly like you are doing. I do not care how much respect you have for Owen, that does not mean he is automatically exempt from criticism. If you have a problem with that, then tough luck. You're lucky I don't burn you to a crisp where you stand after you implied that our parents dropped our Digitamas, you little tail-for-an-arm brat! Not all of us had the luxury of growing up with our parents, after all!"
Luneth wasn't the only one incredibly angered by Omen, either. Gem was charging up his photon power in his left arm, clearly readying up a "Break-Claw" attack if Omen said anything else that was as mean.
Even Amper was suddenly extremely angry, going as far as to cause himself to be surrounded by some kind of electrical aura. While Vergil was doing a good job calming Amper down and Arlo was brilliantly avoiding any and all interaction while under this state, Owen, Luneth, Gem, and Omen all were ready to rip each other apart. And had it not been for Rory suddenly yelling at everyone to be quiet, telling them all that they were under the effect of something and that they shouldn't say anything until they made it back to the breaker room.
Luneth and Gem looked at each other, a bit stunned, but they still had enough sense to listen to their brother. Arlo heard what the Coronamon said as well, and he figured that would be for the best as well. Amper was right; this area was filled with nothing but bad vibes, and they had to leave for their own sanity. One by one, the others would start following Rory to the breaker room, with Arlo entering in last out of everyone there. Just as they had suspected, the orange energy pulsing through Luneth, Gem, and Arlo dissipated, and each one of them could feel their sense of self return once again.
"Ah, that feels much better," Arlo said, a small smile forming on his face as he looked down at his now not-glowing body. "I dislike having that much rage within me." It was then that the Angoramon noticed how tired looking Amper was. He walked over to Vergil and decided to initiate a conversation. "I hope you're doing okay after that bizarre incident, Vergil. Is Amper going do be okay, as well?"
Once he was calm, Luneth turned over to Owen and Omen. "I don't know what came over me back there... or any of us, for that matter, but I am sorry about what I said to the both of you. I am a hothead, but I never take my anger out on those I care about, and I am ashamed of what I did. I hope you both can forgive me." As soon as he was finished apologizing, Luneth took another look at the destroyed breaker. "Well, at least we know what happened to the breaker now."
"It also explains the rather rude note from one of the ex-miners," Arlo added. "And likely why the mine was shut down to begin with. While I was trying to calm myself down from my rage, I noticed that both Vergil and Rory seemed to be unaffected by the orange light. Vergil, because I suspect he's human, but Rory is a mystery to me... in either case, Rory is correct, we should contact Gogmamon once we have all fully recovered."

After that bullshit with the orange wave of assholiness, Omen felt something she found she didn't feel very often. Cold. Huh. Is this the mythical cold sweat humans postulate about? Mmm. It didn't really matter. Omen was flat out tuning out Luneth...For the most part. He...really just...went and proved Omen's point. Him and his brother alike.
Wow.
Did she even dignify that with a response? No, not really. Good soldiers follow orders, after all. So said the memories she inherited. There was not even a hint of fear at Luneth's pointless bluster, nor towards Gem readying a mistake an attack. The fact that Omen didn't even seem to show any visible reaction -to- that should have sounded warning bells.
Anger was natural to her. This was someone who called Mocha one of her best friends, after all. But she was not taking them at all seriously. She followed along towards the breaker room (with the broken breaker), keeping an eye on her cousin as they moved along. "Hm. That'll definitely take out a part of things." Snap snap, went the camera.
At Luneth's -apology, though?- She didn't face him. Merely glanced. "...I have a mission. My forgiveness is secondary to that. We have to put our focus on the mission ahead. Per Rory."
She paused. Took a breath.
"So, my current theory is that the workers were likely under the effects of what came over us. Especially if they were here for long durations of time. Rory's helmet might have something in it that counteracts the orange stuff..."
...Her memory. Yes, the poster! "And...If you'll recall that poster from earlier...It indicated something similar. The sun and moon. One cannot be present where the other is. The moon pointed towards the sun, so that must mean that the moon ultimately surpasses the sun. Apply such logic here, and the sun will be repelled by the moonlight...In this case, Rory's helmet. However...The material in the helm might be doing something opposite to the orange material in that where the orange sun incites rage, the blue moon pacifies."

Vergil was left in utter confusion. One moment everything was all hunky-dory, full of life and ready for what lay ahead, and in the next moment, everyone was at each other’s throats, ready to fight one another. From the way Omen didn’t even react to Gem preparing to attack, to Amper just a moment away from exploding with fury, to the aggressive tone emitting from Owen’s voice as he berated Rory sent chills down his spine, especially the latter.
It jolted faint memories within himself. Hearing Owen’s irate tone reminded him of how his mom used to talk to him when he was younger—with how she would frequently blow up in anger over a marginal mistake. Vergil looked at the Gaomon from the corner of his eyes, expressing a hint of aversion, before turning his attention back to the exhausted Amper in his arms.
Those who were still arguing amongst themselves were immediately silenced by Rory, issuing a retreat back to the third breaking room while evoking that they’re still on a mission here. Vergil silently nodded in agreement, and they all swiftly fell back from the room they were in.
Silently pondering in thought as he looked over to the Pulsemon, still wondering what had exactly happened to cause all of that, Arlo asked how he and Amper were doing. He glanced at him.
“Yeah, umm…” Vergil took a second to clear his throat before continuing, still clearly shaken up by the whole ordeal but buried it in his usual calm façade. “I’m fine. Amper’s alright, too. This is just a guess, but I think what had happened was that he was experiencing too much negative energy all at once in the room, and trying to not act on those said emotions made him exhausted.” He looked down at him with concern. “For a minute I thought he was going to go off on me or something, but I calmed him down somehow...”
The group began to recollect their thoughts. The orange light, the helmet that Rory found, the sun and the moon poster…it was all beginning to make sense. Whatever that just experienced happened to the workers back when this mine was still operating: the shining orange material they were mining incited range within themselves, and they began to fight amongst themselves as well as damaging equipment, as evident by the third breaker that was smashed to bits. The blue light, represented by the moon, was still a mystery until Omen pointed it out in her hypothesis.
“Yeah… the helmet that Rory found earlier is different from ours, emitting a blue light instead of the usual color.” Vergil mused. “So to further support Omen’s theory, Rory was not affected by the orange material in the room because of the material in Rory’s helmet. And instead of being filled with rage and frustration, he was tired. But at the moment, everyone except for me and Rory and can move forward.”
Rory and Arlo suggested contacting Gogmamon. Vergil wasn’t going to wait for everyone to recover one by one; he needed to be informed immediately.
“Owen, hold Amper for me, please,” Vergil asked, not waiting for the Gaomon’s response. Once he handed Amper over to him, the young man proceeded to open the communications on his camera.
“Gogmamon, Vergil here. We encountered a bit of a roadblock, I should say,” Vergil explained. “We went past the third breaker and into a strange area with orange illuminating crystals. But as we did, the light from the crystal began to pulsate through everyone except for Rory, becoming hostile to one another, this close to getting into a fight with themselves. Rory on the other hand began experiencing symptoms of drowsiness from a blue helmet he picked up earlier. I wasn't affected by it since I'm a human. We retreated back to the room with the third breaker and everyone’s beginning to calm down. Do you have any idea what the hell they were mining down here and why, and if so, how should we proceed?”

Owen was still feeling pretty bad about the outburst he made at Rory, he wished he hadn’t said it. Rory meanwhile took it in his stride. He had after all tested Owen’s patience in the past just like that, foolishly spending a night on the town before being expected to start early on a job the next day. While he had been let off with a warning at the time, only now did he know how truly annoyed his captain was in that moment. And he spoke the truth when he said he’d never do it again.
When they arrived back at what they hoped was a safe zone, the effects of that strange light faded and Owen’s aggression was replaced with his normal feelings, weighed down with remorse.
“I really am sorry for going off at you like that, Rory…” he began, but the Coronamon reached out and patted his shoulder.
“It’s fine, Mr. Owen, I know you weren’t yourself there.” he answered. They listened to Arlo and Omen’s theories about what happened, Arlo suggesting that the orange crystals were the reason the mine shut down, and Omen raising the issue of the poster they had seen earlier, showing a sun and moon.
“Ohh, right, so this helmet was stopping its effects on me.” Rory said, taking it off and looking at it more closely. “So the blue light acted like the moon on that poster, while the orange crystals must have been what the sun represented. And you’re right, Omen, I felt right and ready to go until I put the helmet on, then I was slowly starting to get tired.”
Vergil then volunteered to report to Gogmamon. Owen agreed and held on to Amper, noticing his grandson seemed to be utterly exhausted from his discharge earlier. The Gaomon’s remorse increased as he realized that in coming down here, he had exposed his own grandchildren to danger, and he had been unable to protect them. "I'm so sorry..." he thought, gently petting the Pulsemon's fur.
Gogmamon meanwhile listened to Vergil’s report. “I see.” their contractor said in a serious, disappointed voice. “That is indeed a hazard that accounts for this mine being shut down. I am not familiar with the substance in question, do you have pictures of it?”
“Arlo, you took pictures, right?” Rory asked the Angoramon. Gogmamon accessed the photos from his communicator.
”Hmm. It does look familiar, but I don’t believe I’ve seen crystals like that in a mine before.” Gogmamon said. ”Very well. If you cannot safely continue, we may have to leave it at that. I don’t want you risking yourselves to go forward. I may have to arrange a geological survey to find a way around this substance to get to the digizoid, but that would take months...”
"Hrm... I kinda wish I knew where my dad was, as a miner for the DWR, he might know what it is..." Owen thought out loud as he kept an eye on Amper. Then he was struck by another idea. "Oh, I know! I happen to have a friend who did scientific research for them, he might know."
With that, still holding Amper gently in one arm, he took his D-MR from his pocket and held it up towards the wall, turning to the others to explain. "I'm opening a portal now to his lab in Ys. Hopefully he'll be there, and won't mind us kinda... intruding like this, eheh..."
Soon after, the portal became stable and clear, revealing a sinisterly lit room, a dark shape in the middle of it, glowing with blue sparks of energy, mechanical whirs showing signs of life, and a multi-toned voice boomed dramatically.
"For thousands of years I lay dormant... Who has disturbed my-"
Owen rolled his eyes but couldn't help but smile. "Enough with the theatrics, Bixby, we're on business."
"Aww, when I detected you making portal contact I wanted to have this whole thing set up." the voice was much more casual now, and the lights in the room switched on, revealing a Gomamon riding some sort of walking machine. He spoke quickly as he moved the machine toward the portal. "Oh well. What's up, Owen? Ah, I see you have your granddaughter there, hey, Omen! And Vergil too! Oh, is that your grandson? Is he okay?"
“I think he’s fine, just exhausted himself. We have something of a problem in the mineshaft we’re tasked with exploring.” Owen began, putting his D-MR back in his pocket so he could hold Amper with both arms again, then turned to the others. “Everyone, this is Bixby, he’s familiar with DWR research projects.”
After introductions, Owen explained the situation with the strange glowing rocks. Thankfully Bixby was familiar with the subject right away.
“Sun digicite.” the Gomamon declared, a more serious expression on his face. “Good thing you contacted me, I’m familiar with it. Some in the DWR tried to use it as a means to make soldiers more aggressive, it was a very bad idea.”
“Well, do you know what can be done about it, without us going mad?” Owen asked, as Bixby looked deep in thought.
“I might… if you had a sample of Sun and Moon digicite on you…” Bixby answered hesitantly. Rory’s eyes lit up.
“I have a sample here.” he said, holding up his jacket. The digicite was bundled inside so it wouldn’t emit any light. “Do I just… get it through the portal here?”
“Yeah, that’s great.” Bixby said, and Rory handed over the sample. “What about moon digicite?”
“What’s that?” Rory asked, not having seen any around.
“It’s a glowing rock like the Sun digicite, only it glows blue instead of orange.” Bixby explained.
“Ah, so that must be the light source in your helmet.” Owen deduced. Supposing he was right, Rory handed his helmet through the portal too. “What can you do with these samples, Bixby? And why was it affecting us like that?”
“Well, sun and moon digicite act a lot like mood lighting on your data.” Bixby said as he made preparations in his lab through the portal. “A small sample, like the moon digicite in this helmet, or the sun digicite you just gave me, isn’t enough to seriously affect you, well right away anyway, but a corridor full of raw veins of it would drive you mad pretty quickly. However, it’s enough to cancel each other out when in close contact.”
“Right… so the miners who worked here used moon digicite helmets so they could be unaffected by the sun digicite.” Rory deduced. “Still, it was difficult, it made me tired pretty quickly.”
“That’s a side effect of it, yeah.” Bixby said. Before long he was joined in the lab by another person that Owen recognized. A large human with brown skin and a kind face entered the lab, wearing a coat over his clothes.
“Hey, Nik.” Owen said to him. Nik waved back. “Nik’s a friend too, his partner Brad and I go way back.” he explained to the others. He then turned back to Bixby. “So, what’s the plan?”
“With Nik’s help, I’m gonna create a device that’ll protect you all from the effects of the sun digicite.” Bixby said. “Using the samples you gave me, we can make a counter-effect that’ll cancel out the aggression effect in your data. And furthermore without the drowsiness effect of the moon digicite. Nik’s a human so he won’t be affected by the digicite, and he’s pretty effective as my assistant.”
“That’s great!” Owen said, cheerfully. “And how long will you take?”
“Give us a few minutes.” Bixby replied. “I just need to find my notes about it in the archive… ugh, sun digicite. How I loathe the stuff.”
“Well then, it seems you have the situation under control.” Gogmamon said through Vergil’s communicator, having quietly listened to the entire exchange. “Once the counter-device is completed, do you feel like you can continue?”
Owen turned first to Amper, who he was still carrying, and then to the others, hoping that they would be alright.

Whatever happened in that room could easily qualify as "a freaking disaster." No one could've anticipated how this group of tightly knit Digimon would suddenly drop everything and start yelling at each other, but low and behold, that's what had happened. It was even beginning to scare Arlo who, while he was under the anger-inducing influence, he had more experience tempering his emotions and he was at least able to see and hear somewhat clearly, as long as no one even did so much as poke him. At least they had identified that something was wrong and retreated back to the breaker room where no further harm could be done.
Luneth and Gem were still a bit angry, however. It was a bit hard to get over someone they respected yelling at their brother unprompted like that. The only thing that had them both any sense to try and move on was the fact that they knew Owen just wasn't himself at that point... and neither was anyone else, really. Even Rory was able to forgive him easily, so at least there was no bad blood between the two of them.
Vergil, however, was easily taking it the worst out of any of them. When Arlo was speaking to him, while he explained what had happened to Amper, the Angoramon could just tell from looking at Vergil's eyes that he wasn't doing okay. "You do not have to hide it, Vergil," Arlo said to him in a calm voice. "I can tell you're still distraught from what happened. And I personally do not blame you for that. I will not force you to talk about it, but I do think hiding how you're feeling will not solve a thing."
Ironic, coming from the living walking lie of a bunny.
As the group was calming down, the puzzle pieces started coming together. The sun and moon poster, the helmet's blue light, the destroyed generator... Rory admitted that as soon as he put the helmet on, he began to feel tired, despite him being full of energy earlier. "So it is something inside the helmet making you tired, as well as resisting the orange crystals' effects," Luneth commented as he glanced at Rory's helmet. "At least we know now that it's nothing wrong with you, Rory, per-say."
Vergil was the one to contact Gogmamon, informing him of what happened. He asked for pictures of the substance, which Arlo had thankfully taken before everyone started going mad. Rory asked if Arlo had taken the pictures earlier. "Indeed I have," the Angoramon said with a nod before he handed the camera to Rory so he could do his thing. Unfortunately, Gogmamon had not seen any crystals like that before. It seemed like a major detour was in order, before Owen remembered he knew someone who did research for the DWR.
"This is the first time you've mentioned that to me," Luneth said, raising an eyebrow. Nonetheless, Owen took out his D-MR and opened up a portal to this friend's lab.
The room on the other side of the portal was very dark, save for the sinister lighting and the sparks coming from the middle of the room. Whoever it was went on about being sealed up for thousands of years before Owen politely told them to knock it off. The lights then switched on, and Luneth, Arlo, and Gem were all surprised to see that it was actually a Gomamon riding some sort of walking machine. Not what any of them was expecting, to say the least. Owen introduced him as Bixby, and it seemed like he knew everyone except for the three brothers and Arlo. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Bixby sir. My name is Luneth, and these are my brothers, Rory and Gem."
"Hello!" Gem cheered, waving ecstatically. "Your machines are so cool!"
"And my name is S- er, Arlo," the Angoramon said, waving a little bit with a small smile present on his face. He winced a bit at his almost mess-up of using his "official" name instead of his new one. Of course Luneth noticed, but he didn't pay much attention to it at the moment.
Owen proceeded to explain to Bixby the situation, and he was able to immediately deduce that what they had encountered was Sun Digicite, a substance that the DWR used to try and make their soldiers more aggressive. Luneth thought that was a horrible use of something so obviously evil, and Arlo's heart skipped a beat; he had heard of Sun Digicite before in one of the books he read, but wasn't fully aware of the effects until just now.
Bixby asked for a sample of Sun Digicite before he could prevent the others from going mad because of it. Thankfully, Rory seemed to have a sample bundled up inside of his jacket. Luneth glanced at the wrapped-up Digicite with an unsure expression, worrying about being exposed to that light again. Bixby then asked if they had Moon Digicite, which looked like Sun, only it glows blue instead of orange. Immediate connections were made to Rory's helmet which, sure enough, had Moon Digicite samples within it. Bixby went on to explain that both Digicites acted like moon lighting on Digimon data; they cancel each other out when brought together, and small doses of them weren't enough to make the effects apparent immediately.
"This explains quite a lot then," Luneth said. "Why Rory was the only Digimon not affected by that Sun Digicite, and why he was growing more and more tired before that point."
"I thought Arlo was immune, too?" Gem asked, tilting his head. From what little he could remember, Arlo wasn't going around yelling at everyone like everyone else was.
"Unfortunately, I was affected like everyone else. The only difference was that I tend to mellow out my own emotions on a daily basis, so while the strain to my mental state was intense, I was still relatively able to keep my own head. I wasn't quite sure how long that was going to last, however."
With that, it seemed that Bixby had a plan. He and his human assistant Nik, who everyone else just simply waved to, they were going to create a device using the Sun and Moon samples to cancel out the Digicites' effect on their data, and they just needed a couple of minutes to do so. Through Vergil's communicator, Gogmamon asked if everyone would be alright to continue on once the counter-device was complete.
"Before we continue, I would like to know if there are any other mood-altering crystals of the sort," Arlo had piped up. "Unchecked emotions can be a dangerous thing, especially items that influence said emotions. Aside from that, I see no reason to not continue onward."
"We're seeing this through to the end," Luneth said with a smile, looking to either of his brothers.
"Yeah! Brothers stick together!" Gem cheered as he flew up and pulled both Luneth and Rory in for a double side-hug.

Omen had more or less managed to tune out most of the bad stuff after delivering her explanation, more or less focusing on the report and it's intricacies. Her theory was, of course, pretty damn sound. Photographic memory-based evidence helped a lot. "Hi, Bixby--it's good to see you." The Wispmon managed a smile at that.
She hadn't spoken much to the Gomamon, but she did enjoy hearing about innovations from the past and the present from him on occasion. "Interesting...though, if the Moon digicite was what they had on hand to deal with the effects of the sun, then...what drove them out? Or rather, what broke the breaker? I think that they're the only Digicite of that nature we'll be dealing with, unless we find Star Digicite or something--that's the only one I can think of that'd be around these two if it even exists."
This wasn't an invitation to confirm that.
"Needless to say, Gogmamon, I am my mother's daughter to the end, and if my mother would never forsake a mission, then neither would I. The question is if you're okay with continuing to allow it to proceed."

Vergil, as Arlo spoke to him, began to loosen and wrap the sports wrap around his arms one at a time, merely glancing at him. He was still experiencing a whole lot of mixed emotions from the ordeal but didn’t want to be put in a vulnerable spot, especially in front of people he just met nearly an hour ago. Besides, everyone was not themselves when under exposure to those crystals so that much was understandable. Honestly, he was just glad that nobody snapped at him. Tightening up the last wrap around his left arm, the young man proceeded to walk a couple of steps away from Alro, activating the communication device on his camera, but not before stopping to give the Angoramon a side glance.
“There are times when it’s appropriate to wear your heart on your sleeves, and times when it’s not,” Vergil stated. “Right now is not one of those times.”
Vergil then made his report to Gogmamon, who then requested pictures of the strange illuminating crystals they encountered, which Arlo quickly provided. Unfortunately, Gogmamon had never seen them before, which left the group with an ultimatum: leave the mines and abandon the mission for the time being, or continue to proceed with potentially even more risks. This would have meant all of the progress so far would have been for nothing, but luckily for them, Owen remembered someone who did the research for the DWR back then.
“Wait…when you said ‘his lab in Y’s’, you mean…oh god, not him,” Vergil said to Owen, cringing at the realization.
Owen opened a portal. And soon enough, everyone was introduced to Bixby the Gomamon, who gave a theatrical appearance. Vergil waved at the Gomamon, giving an awkward smile. Despite his cute, outwardly appearance, Bixby radiated mad scientist vibes, so he thought it would be best to keep up with appearances. Otherwise, he might turn him into a living bomb or something.
Explaining their current situation, Bixby identified the strange crystals on the wall as Sun Digicite, a substance that the DWR used to make their soldiers more aggressive. Dissimilarly, the light source that was in Rory’s helmet—known as Moon Digicite—acted as a counter to Sun Digicite, pacifying the aggression of any Digimon near it, making them tired in response. When both rocks are together, any side effects are canceled out, which explains how the miners were able to work in these conditions.
With his human assistant’s help, Bixby devised a plan to create a device that’ll protect everyone here from the that’ll protect them from both of the digicites using the samples they had provided to them. Gogmamon asked if everyone would be alright with continuing the mission. Luneth, Gem, Arlo, and Omen were alright to continue. As for Vergil, he turned to Amper, who was still being carried by Owen, pondering on his response before voicing it.
“Honestly…I dunno if I can continue, guys,” Vergil said, rubbing the back of his neck. “Amper exhausted himself out pretty good from what happened back there, and I don’t want to put him into any more danger as is. Besides, both of his dads would kill me if something had happened to him while he was under my care.” He turned to Owen. “I think you feel the same way.”
Vergil sighed. “Fuck…if only Vee and Gummy were here right now, then this wouldn’t be an issue…”

Owen was glad that Vergil was able to tell Arlo that now was not the time to discuss what happened. It had been a moment of madness in the mineshaft ahead, and dwelling upon what was said would not be helpful for any of them.
Rory meanwhile chuckled at his big brother’s comment. “Yep, seems my helmet inhibited my usual tendency to act embarrassingly.” he said. The Coronamon in that moment was a little worried about what he might have done if it wasn’t for the accidental protection of the Moon Digicite helmet. Well, thankfully he hadn’t acted out, so there was no reason to dwell upon it.
Gogmamon meanwhile was grateful for the visual images of what they had experienced. “Excellent, if it turns out we have to avoid this substance in future, we now know what to look for.” he remarked.
When Owen mentioned Bixby, Luneth said that it was the first time he had mentioned him in his presence. “Well, he’s eccentric, and… kind of a last resort in most situations, but, I think this situation in particular calls for him.” Owen explained to the Hackmon.
The Gaomon noticed that Arlo had seemed to be able to resist the effect of the Sun Digicite rather well, when he admitted that he had felt its effects but had not acted out on them like he had. Owen thought that was admirable, and a skill to take note of.
Arlo then asked if there was any other type of digicite that they should be aware of. Bixby considered his response.
“Well, there’s the Sun and Moon Digicite, so far that I’ve explained…” the Gomamon said, holding his paw to his chin as he tried to remember all he could about it. “Oh, and there’s Black Digicite, I’m sure by now you’re familiar with that, they’re the substance behind Control Spires and they inhibit evolution and bind digimon to their protection, but we’ve been pretty successful in destroying the few left remaining in the digital world…” he wavered off, seemingly wanting to say something further, but held himself back.
“Could you please continue, Bixby?” Owen asked, gently.
“...there’s Clarion digicite.” the Gomamon said, eventually. “It’s refined Sun digicite without all the aggressive madness. It enhances combat abilities, while retaining control. Although that’s completely artificial, and green in color. I very much doubt you’ll find any down there. In the DWR Civil War, according to my records, all of its use was accounted for in the strongest soldiers, who all destroyed each other in the end.”
“Yeah, sounds about right.” Owen said, shaking his head with shame about how he was involved in all that. But that was the past. Now was the present, and he had to take care of everyone here.
Bixby then addressed Omen’s question about how if they had Moon Digicite as a means to counteract the Sun Digicite, why did they abandon this mine. “That’s a great question, Omen, I’ll be right back while I find the file on that.” he said, retreating from the view of the portal for a few minutes before returning. “Ah, yes, here’s a report. I’ll just quote the key findings…”
Bixby then read from the paper he held up in his flippers. Rory found it remarkable that the Gomamon was able to walk around his laboratory in his mechanical frame with almost the same functionality as a human. At the same time, he understood why he had made such an apparatus, it must be so frustrating for some digimon to try and use their claws as fingers and their lower bodies as legs. But it seemed Bixby had it worked out.
“Short term interactions between Sun and Moon Digicite…” Bixby read from the archive report. “Minor irritability and fatigue noted, but nothing dangerous particularly notable. Interactions have been declared safe for operations. Long-term interactions… oh dear, 80% of mine workers operating in such conditions develop excessive aggression issues after 6 months. This was a particular problem for the DWR in its Digizoid mining operations.”
“How come?” Rory asked, curious about the reason.
“Most digizoid ore deposits had Sun Digicite nearby.” Bixby explained, closing the file. “Hasn’t really been a reason why, but a hypothesis I’ve come up with is that digizoid ore deposits occur where there’s been major battles between Mega level digimon, who usually have the usual digizoid armor and weapons, and the Sun Digicite occurs from the sites of their battles and all that. Anyway, if you’ll excuse me, I need to make these devices for you.”
Bixby then resumed his work in the lab with Nik.
Owen was glad to see that Luneth, Gem and Omen were eager to continue with the mission as asked by Gogmamon, but Vergil raised a very good point. Amper was still knocked out by his discharge of energy from earlier, and Vergil correctly noted that Owen would not want to continue so hastily. But still, the Gaomon didn’t want to abandon the mission altogether right now, especially when Gogmamon said that the alternative would be a several month delay. So instead, Owen chose for a time-out option.
“Let’s just take a rest for half an hour, while we wait for Bixby and Nik to finish their devices.” he suggested. He then looked down at Amper, then remembered a moment earlier in their acquaintance in which he had tuckered himself out by using up too much of his electric powers, and seemed alright after a basic remedy. “Ah, wait! Bixby! Do you have any Powerade or Gatorade there? Amper could do with some.”
“Powergatorwhat?” Bixby asked, blinking. Thankfully his human assistant knew what was going on.
“Yeah, we’ve got some of that, Owen. I’ll grab a bottle from the fridge.” Nik said, finishing his current stage of the experiment in the lab, then retreated from the room for a moment, before returning with a bottle of blue liquid. Nik tossed it through the portal and Owen caught it, thanking him.
“Here we go, mate, this should get you back up and running.” Owen said to his grandson, gently putting the electrolyte-filled drink in his mouth. Hopefully this would get him back in action soon enough.
For the moment, it seemed that they could do little else but wait. Owen noticed that Rory was pacing a little impatiently, but he couldn’t blame him. And that much of their group didn’t seem to be going well. The Gaomon felt the need to check up on them.
“Well, since we’re having a break for the moment, I should ask you all, how are you feeling?” he asked, caring much about what they had to say.

Arlo extended a hand towards Vergil when he started to walk away, but quickly let it drop to his side. At this point, the Angoramon didn't even know what he was doing with himself. He simply wanted to help, but so far all he felt like he was doing was making things even worse than they already were. His hands trembled at his sides. "Why am I no good at this?" Arlo asked himself. "Renna, it's times like these that I wish you were here to guide me..."
When Rory mentioned how the helmet inhibited his usually embarrassment-inducing behavior, Luneth shook his head no. "Do not doubt yourself like that. Helmet or not, you were the one that was able to get us to think straight again when we were all losing our minds. You saved us from ourselves, Rory. Mother and Father are going to be so proud of you."
To Arlo's question, Bixby more or less explained that Sun and Moon Digicite was all that the group would be likely to encounter in the mine. The topic of Clarion Digicite felt even nastier than how the DWR used Sun Digicite, in Luneth's and Arlo's opinion. "Then perhaps it's best that the Clarion Digicite was likely destroyed along with them," Luneth responded. When Bixby left to go grab the files on why the mine was abandoned, Luneth looked over at Owen and Vergil. "I can see why you both would be hesitant to contact him. He's clearly mad."
"I dunno, I think he's cool," Gem said in an innocent child-like tone.
"Just be sure that you don't touch anything of his without permission, Gem. I don't trust that half of his gadgets won't explode at random."
Bixby had come back with the reports a few minutes later. He flipped through the pages to get to the key findings, during which giving Luneth, Arlo, and Gem to actually appreciate the mechanical frame he was walking around in. Gomamon weren't exactly ambidextrous, so it was fascinating to see him use a machine that let him walk around almost like a human.
According to Bixby, despite the precautions, 80% of the mine workers had developed excessive aggression issues after six months of work, which was a problem considering most digizoid ore deposits had Sun Digicite nearby. "So regardless of what they did, the Sun Digicite would still affect them and their work output regardless. It's getting harder to see how Gogmamon and his crew can withstand to reopen the mine with these conditions."
Bixby then went back to working on the Digicite negating device, and Vergil expressed his concerns about continuing onward, considering Amper's state. The others hadn't quite considered that, they were ashamed to admit. Owen suggested that the group rest for half an hour while Nik and Bixby finished the devices. At that moment, Luneth's stomach rumbled, causing the cloaked dragon's cheeks to slightly turn pink. "Sorry about that..."
Arlo chuckled. "It is quite alright, Luneth. I am growing hungry as well. I believe we can make this point our official lunch break." The Angoramon turned to the others. "I am willing to cook something up for everyone here, provided you didn't already bring your own lunches. Even for you two, Nik and Bixby, if you so wish."
"Yay! Lunch time, lunch time!" Gem cheered, happily floating circles around Arlo in excitement.
Not wanting to cook inside of the lab, Arlo would make his way outside in the city of Ys to set up his supplies for campfire cooking. It took him a while to decide what he would make, but he decided that karaage (Japanese style fried chicken) and chicken katsu would be the best course of action. They were delicious, and he could make a boat load of them. Arlo had a lot of meat in his supplies, and with the size of this group, he intended to use all of it.
First, he chopped up the meat into pieces, dumped them into bags full of flour and shook them up. Arlo got the idea to double fry the meat so that it would be extra delicious. Fry it at a low temperature first to cook it thoroughly, he thought as he dropped the meat pieces into the pot of oil. Eat finished fried piece he would scoop out with a utensil and gently place onto a baking sheet for later use.
Then fry it at a high temperature to crisp the outside, Arlo thought to himself as he placed the meat pieces back into the boiling oil pot. This process would continue as Arlo cooked the food, while chopping up some lettuce and lemons to compliment the main entree in the meantime.
Luneth and Gem were both mesmerized as they watched Arlo cook their lunch, until Luneth noticed how Rory was pacing back and forth a lot in an impatient manner. Luneth felt like he wanted to say something, but wasn't quite sure on what to say, considering he was having a hard time deciphering how Rory was feeling at the moment. Speaking of which, Owen would speak up and ask the group as a whole how they were doing. Arlo chose not to answer, remaining silent for reasons unknown. But Luneth would give an answer.
"Aside from being hungry, I've been better, but I've also been worse," Luneth said to Owen. "I'm still getting over the incident with the Sun Digicite. I know we weren't ourselves, but that doesn't stop it from lingering in my mind, as I'm still a bit hurt by the whole ordeal. I should be much better given time, however."
"I didn't think there'd be that much fighting," Gem said. "I thought we were gonna go on a cool adventure like Dad and Adrian went on a long time ago. I didn't like feeling angry and yelling at everyone... is Amper going to be okay, Mr. Owen?"
Some time later, lunch would officially be served. Arlo went through the trouble of preparing each individual plate for everyone, each one having a decently filling amount of chicken on the plate alongside pairings of lettuce and lemon slices. The plates were lined up along the fold-up table, allowing everyone to take some at their own pace. "Lunch is served, everyone. Do not hesitate to ask for seconds if you're finished, as there is plenty more where that came from."

Bixby, to Omen, was very far from a mad scientist. She kinda thought those were lame--and a very hurtful label to throw onto people who were pretty eccentric in their own right. Regardless, much of what she posited was proven to be accurate to a degree. Which was neat! Maybe she should study this minerology stuff more in-depth when she could.
"Operating at 90% efficiency. So. A rest would probably work great. Honestly, there hasn't been much proper fighting at all--more in-fighting than anything thanks to the Sun Digicite. Given what Bixby said about Clarion, makes me wonder a few things about an acquaintance of mine..." But that didn't really matter. Omen accepted her lunch when she was offered it. She didn't really need seconds. Or have much else to say.
"Our job right now is seeing the extent of these conditions. Whether or not the mine can be operated is ultimately up to Gogmamon's discretion--though with the extent of the Digicite present...Prognosis is grim."
Well. Outside of that.

Amper awakened slowly, hearing the voice of his grandfather calling to him. He felt groggy and disoriented as he stirred a bit in Owen’s arms. He opened his eyes, slowly, blinking a few times, adjusting to the tiny shafts of light. His body felt heavy as he tried to move his fingers and hands, but to no avail since his energy was completely sapped.
The Pulsemon gave a weak nod and Owen put the mysterious drink onto his lips. Amper took numerous gulps, and with each sip, he felt a rush of energy coursing through him, reinvigorating his strength—like a torrent wave!
“Zappu?!” Amper’s groggy eyes lit up, full of life. The once exhausted Digimon became reinvigorated, jumping out of Owen’s arms, electric sparks crackling as he planted his feet onto the ground. He began to dash around the place as a purple blur, weaving through everyone until suddenly stopping right in front of the Gaomon.
“Where are we, zappu? What happened, zappu? Did we beat up some bad guys, Grandpa Owen?” Amper asked, jumping up and down, waiting for his answer.
“Na, no bad guys down here. At least...not yet anyway.” Vergil answered, approaching the Pulsemon with a smile. “Good to see you’re up; You had us concerned for a second there.” He was relieved that Amper was alright. He didn’t think an outburst such as that would wear him out like that. It was almost as though he simply overloaded and expelled too much energy.
“Uncle Specs!” Amper exclaimed happily as he moved to hug Vergil. “I remembered feeling angry and yelling, and then KA-POW! I was tired, zappu”
Vergil patted his back before sighing, explaining to the purple Digimon what had happened earlier. Despite all of that chaos, all that mattered was that everyone here was alright. But from what Bixby explained, this mine wasn’t exactly as safe as they'd originally thought.
Aroma began to fill the air, as Arlo cooked and served lunch for the entire party; Vergil and Amper grabbed a plate from the fold-up table. Vergil was originally going to eat separately from the group before Amper took his hand and guided him to sit next to Owen and Omen, much to the young man's slight dismay. He noticed Rory pacing impatiently but didn’t say anything.
“Itadakimasu, zappu,” Amper said to Arlo before digging into his food. Vergil was quite surprised that the Pulsemon knew that phrase since he hadn’t been in the human world for a long period. Was it his dads that taught him that, or Vee?
The young man shrugged, going into his meal, and the conversation that Owen started brought in a few answers. Amper was quick to finish his plate first, and went for seconds, which was pretty much obvious since he worked up an appetite from earlier.
“Ehh…5/10. Could be better, could be worse.” Vergil simply stated before returning to his meal with his eyes closed. It was clear that he still didn’t want to talk about it so he left it as is.

Rory was surprised by Luneth’s words. Ordinarily the Coronamon was used to being accused of shenanigans and silly things, but in this case, it seemed his good luck and his training had allowed him to help save the situation beforehand from becoming worse. All he could say in response was “...heh, thanks, Luneth, I appreciate that.”
A lunch break soon followed. Owen and Rory appreciated the good food that Arlo prepared. In fact it reinvigorated both of them so that they were eager to continue.
Omen’s assessment of the situation was fairly accurate. As it was, there was no way a regular mining operation could be opened here, unless Bixby’s inventions would work as intended.
To Owen’s delight, the powerade drink Nik provided brought Amper back to consciousness. He released him the moment he started moving again, not wanting to be electrocuted. He smiled and let Vergil answer his questions before reassuring him that “We’re all good for the moment, mate.”
When Owen and Rory had finished their meals, presumably along with everyone else, Bixby announced the completion of his devices from the other side of the open portal.
“Aand here we go! Anti-digicite helmets heading your way!” the Gomamon said, using his mech construct to pass some helmets through the portal. “These should work like Rory’s Moon Digicite helmet, only it won’t make you so exhausted. Rather than creating a digital light field specifically opposite to the Sun Digicite, these helmets should create a field that nullifies all digicite light waves, meaning you’ll be resistant to both Sun and Moon digicite. At least in theory...”
“So, in theory, these helmets should shield us digimon from the effects of the digicite.” Owen stated. “But first we need to test it to make sure before we can make sure of it. You agree with that, Bixby?”
“Of course, this needs to be tested.” the Gomamon replied, a touch of concern present on his face. “So… what do you have in mind?”
“This digicite here affects digimon, but not humans.” Owen thought out loud. So he came to a conclusion fairly quickly. “So to test it, I volunteer myself, with Vergil by my side.”
“Whoa, Mr. Owen, are you sure about that?” Rory asked, a little taken aback. “I mean… if it doesn’t work, you could get aggressive and hurt him…”
“That won’t happen.” Owen replied, his voice close to a growl. “Vergil is family, and I never hurt family. If at any point this test run fails, I will fall limp and rely on Vergil to pull me back here to safety. Is this plan fine with the rest of you?”
Rory was at first a little hesitant, but he knew that Owen was speaking truth in that it was incredibly difficult to hurt family against one’s wishes. “If you’re sure about it, Mr. Owen, then let’s at least test this and get through it.” he answered.
“I am sure.” Owen reassured him, then turned to the rest of the group. “If we’re all fine with this, I’ll test the way forward with Vergil. If Bixby’s helmets work as planned, you can follow us. If they don’t, I’m relying on Vergil to take me back here so we can decide on what to do next. And there’s no need to worry if it ends in failure, at the very least, we’ve carved out a path to our goal, now we just need to figure out a way to get past this obstacle.”
“Ah, yeah, with that in mind, could you please keep this portal open? I’d like to closely monitor this expedition.” Bixby requested from the other side of the portal. “Don’t worry about power supply or anything, I’ve got it all handled from this end.” Owen agreed to this.
Owen hoped that since everyone had been rested and fed, they’d be ready to try again. He looked ahead at the passage, flipping the switch on his helmet that activated the anti-digicite field. As Bixby had said, the orange light immediately lost its hue and turned white. He supposed that meant it was working.
With that established, Owen would turn to his granddaughter. "Omen, if something goes wrong here, I'd like to put you in charge of evacuation. We'll retreat through this open portal to Ys and regroup from there."
The Gaomon took a deep breath and looked up at Vergil. “You okay with this, mate?” he asked, gently. If so, they would proceed into the digicite passage.
