It was after school that day and right now, Ryu was in his usual spot near the abandoned building where he was playing with his toy dart guns. However, he wasn't here to shoot darts this time. More recently, his Digimon partner, Daten, just evolved recently and to his surprise, he somehow grew finger-like tentacles and he could run really fast now. Of course, Ryu noticed he wasn't like the ones Colin had with him, so he guessed that it would take a while until Daten was ready against any enemy Digimon coming their way.
So that's why he was back at his usual spot. Ryu watched his newly evolved Tsumemon kick several pebbles with his clawed tentacles towards the empty cans of soda his Tamer found for this exercise. If they wanted better chances to survive against any potential enemies, Ryu needed to train Daten as best as he could while not ignoring his needs in the process. As Colin would say, he needed to care for his Digimon, and never abuse them.
However, as an hour passed, Daten only hit 3 out of 10 cans, and most of the shots he kicked were misses or near-hits. Ryu wanted to step this training up, but he was a bit unsure how much his Digimon could handle in that form for a while. Eventually, as he witnessed him successfully hit the fourth can, Ryu smiled and approached Daten before he gently stroked his antennas.
"Nice job, Daten. I know it's only half a progress, but you've improved a lot ever since we started training," said Ryu. "You give it your all when you put your mind to it, you know."
Daten happily cried as a beep from Ryu's phone rang up, causing him to check on it.
Thanks, Ryu! It's because of you that I learn how to protect both of us!
Ryu smiled at the message. "Yeah, I know I'm a bit paranoid. But I saw those kinds of scenes in those anime and it's better than nothing," he said. "By the way, I can't help but notice how you're starting to talk normally, Daten."
I learn Japanese better thanks to the data you gave me along with those books you showed me. Though I don't know if it's perfect...
"Yeah, I get you. Especially with Kanji, they're the worse!"
The worse!
Ryu chuckled at his Digimon's response before he picked him up onto his arms and sat on nearby rubble shaped like a bench. "Well, this calls for a small snack break. I know you're getting hungry from that training, right?"
The Digimon's eye widened with glee. Snacks! Snacks! What did you bring today? Cotton candy? Hard candies?
"Even better!" Ryu grabbed his backpack and after rummaging into it, he produced two bars of chocolate. "Milk chocolate! With or without nuts?"
Daten curiously stared at the bars. Nuts?
"You know what? You can have the nuts." Ryu gently placed one of the bars near Daten as he continued to stare at it. "Trust me, it's much better if you experience chocolate with many flavors."
Hearing this, the small Digimon jumped in joy. Daten wants one! I want to eat it with you!
Ryu smiled before he gave the candy bar to Daten. "Here you go. Don't eat it too fast or you won't enjoy the full choco experience."
Daten nodded.
Itadakimasu!
The Tamer and Digimon started eating their chocolate bar, unknown to them that the gate that was supposed to bar anyone to enter the abandoned building remained open.

Meanwhile Ryuji, who was walking with his partner digimon Yoshihiro napping in his backpack, was glad his bruises from training in martial arts with Yoshihiro were covered by his hoodie. At least he seemed to be slowly getting better with his training. As he passed some abandoned building he felt Yoshihiro wiggling inside his backpack before the Calumon popped of the slightly open backpack with a yawn his ears wiggling as he looked around as if he could sense something.
When Yoshihiro floated out of the backpack and landed on Ryuji's shoulder the eighteen year old halted his steps and looked at the in training digimon on his shoulder and asked "What is it, Yoshihiro?"
"There's a digimon nearby. Not only that but I am hearing two voices." Yoshihiro said. Sure the digimon he sensed didn't feel strong but only sensed one so the other voice was likely a human. A tamer or xros general perhaps?
It seemed Ryuji was partially reading Yoshihiro's thoughts as he said "Could it be a tamer with a digimon? If you were worried about the digimon you would of mentioned something about it by now."
"Do you think we should look into this, Ryuji?" Yoshihiro asked as his paws clenched the fabric of Ryuji's hoodie. It was clear he was ready for trouble.
"Yes and I know that I don't have to tell you to keep your guard up." Ryuji said as he made his way to the abandoned building before carefully entering it. As they made their way in the sight of empty cans of soda lined up. Was this some kind of secret training area?
Then Yoshihiro's ears wiggled before he tapped Ryuji's cheek pointing while he whispered "Ryuji, look. There's some kid with a digimon eating snacks over there."

Once they managed to eat all of the bars, both the young boy and his Digimon sighed in relief as they could taste the tangy chocolate and nuts in their mouths.
It tastes weird, but crunchy! Daten said through a text message on Ryu's phone. Daten likes it!
"I know, right? Eating chocolate by myself is fine and all, but it's extra fun when you're with me, Daten," Ryu declared.
Yep! I want to eat chocolate bars with you again! You will bring one again, right?
"Along with other sweets, yep! As long I ace my tests and you work hard on your training, okay?"
The Tsumemon nodded. Daten promise!
"Cool. Now let's clean up and..." But before Ryu could finish his sentence, Daten's antennas perked up, and turned around with his eye narrowed, which his Tamer noticed. "Huh? What's the matter, Daten?"
He then noticed another text message on his phone, which Ryu opened.
Daten sensed a Digimon! And someone is with them!
Ryu's eyes widened when he read this. He turned around and to his shock, he noticed a man who was older than him staring at him and an opened gate in front of them. He groaned when he saw the latter. "Man, I should remember to close them before I do some stuff here..."
He sighed and calmly stepped forward to confront the man. "Can I help you with something? I'm guessing you staring at my...hand plush means you're not one of the security guards nearby, right?" He stared at Daten one more time, nodding at him to reassure him before he turned to the man again. "Don't worry, he's my partner. He won't hurt anyone, I promise."

Then the pair took notice of Ryuji and Yoshihiro likely cause the boy's partner sensed another digimon judging by the small digimon antenna perking up. Then the boy began approaching them asking questions. As Ryuji was about to answer Yoshihiro chuckled before he said "Security? Where did you get a crazy idea like that? Look at him. He is wearing jeans and a baggy red hoodie. If that is a security guard uniform I must really be out of touch." Then Yoshihiro began laughing loudly somehow still managing to remain on Ryuji's shoulder despite how hard he was laughing and Ryuji sighed rolling his icy blue eyes.
Deciding to ignore Yoshihiro for the time he looked the younger human in the eye noticing he didn't even look like a teenager. Sure there were those that had bonds with digimon that weren't even teenagers yet but they seemed to be far and few. "Good to know your partner won't hurt anyone. Neither will mine despite him having martial arts training. Though, to me, he is also my older brother. He just prefers this form in a non combat situation."
By then Yoshihiro had stopped laughing and said "Not all digimon have sibling relationships with their partners. Most I have seen are at most friends which I don't mind either. That's how the two of us started."
"Yeah that was until you came up with the cover of being my older brother and since we were much like siblings already by then we went with it." Ryuji said with a brief chuckle.

As they took a closer look at their uninvited guest and the strange Digimon with wings as their ears, Ryu and Daten looked at each for a while. Then, they turned back to them and chuckled sheepishly. At least they believed their claim that Daten was harmless.
However, what's more curious was how they called each other brothers despite they weren't related or of the same species. But it did make Ryu think as he stared at his Digimon. "Uh... I didn't know that. For all I know, I think of Daten as my best friend."
Daten stared at the pair of Tamer and Digimon and turned to Ryu.
What is a sibling?
Ryu's eyes widened, shocked, yet curious at his Tsumemon's question. "Uh... That's a tough question. I know they are born in the same family and depending on who was born first, they can be either a younger brother or sister or older."
Do you have a brother or sister?
Ryu frowned as he shook his head. "Unfortunately, no. I was born as an only child. Though I wish I have a brother. It will be less lonely back home."
Daten hummed with a low beep. Then his eye widened. Can I be your brother?
Ryu's frown disappeared as he was shocked at his sudden offer. "Well, I don't know about that."
But before he could say anything, he realized something as he stared back at the uninvited guests. "Oh, right. I forgot. I'm Ryu Yoshida, I'm recently a new Tamer. And this little guy is my Digimon, Daten."
Hello. A message popped up on Ryu's phone as the Tamer showed it to the older boy and the Digimon he called his brother.
"And by the way, this is how Daten speaks. He's still learning how, but I'm guessing he can speak if he evolves, I think."

It seemed Daten wanted to know what a sibling was and after Ryu explained what a sibling was. "Yes a sibling can be older or younger. The parents can even adopt children so the siblings can become family that way."
Then Ryu mentioned that he was an only child and Ryuji said "I know how it feels to be an only child. Before I met Yoshihiro I was an only child myself but even then I had my grandparents so I wasn't lonely."
"I like them. They are as nice as my dad and they took the whole digimon issue well." Yoshihiro said.
Then the kid introduced himself as Ryu Yoshida and his partner was named Daten. "My name is Ryuji Amano and the little guy with me is Yoshihiro."
When Ryu explained that Daten communicated through his phone Ryuji glanced at Yoshihiro and said "Is this normal?"
"Just as humans have many ways of communicating digimon do as well. Some digimon also learn to speak at different rates but tend to understand languages super fast still." Yoshihiro explained.
Ryuji looked at Daten and said "Shame we don't know when he'll evolve or what form he will take. Digimon can be unpredictable that way."

Daten hummed as he stared at Ryuji and Yoshihiro with his widened eye. Daten wants to be Ryu's brother. I don't want him to feel alone.
Ryu looked at his Digimon, shocked at his words. Then, he smiled in response and said, "Well, if the time comes, maybe we'll become brothers in some way. Consider that a promise."
Daten's eye perked up and happily jumped in joy. Ryu then turned to Ryuji after Yoshihiro explained how fast Digimon could learn at different rates.
"Yeah. I was shocked when Daten got into my phone just to talk, but I got used to it for now. Besides, it's a good way to talk to him while keeping him hidden from the public."
He then stared at Daten again when the topic of Digimon evolving came up. "You have a point there. He was originally a jellyfish-like Digimon that the Digivice called "Kuramon". He doesn't even have tentacles with claws until he evolved. Then again, I'm new to this whole Digimon tamer thing and I'm trying my best to take care of Daten until he's battle-ready. You guys have any advice on what to expect on his next evolution?"

Yoshihiro floated off of Ryuji's shoulder stopping in front of Daten who was happily jumping. Ryuji thought that Daten was adorable for tentacled lifeform with a single eye. When asked what to expect for his next evolution Yoshihiro looked Daten over again before he said "Well his next stage would be his rookie stage and he could still become anything as two of the same digimon can have totally different evolutionary lines and just as diverse abilities to match. One thing that is for certain is that his next stage will be stronger than this one. Rookie stage digimon are at least capable of defending themselves in battle much better than their fresh and in training stages."
Ryuji then said "Speaking of digivolutions, Yoshihiro has always surprised me with each new stage he has achieved. His rookie stage is much bigger than his current form. He prefers to be in his in training stage most of the time and it doesn't have anything to do with him remaining hidden."
"This form doesn't take near as much energy to maintain as my evolved forms. I seem to release a lot of holy energy but could still maintain higher than my in training form if I wanted to." Yoshihiro said.

Ryu's eyes widened as he stared at Yoshihiro. "So you're saying he's much stronger than he looks? But he chooses to be in his In-Training form because it's well-suited to hide from the public?" He hummed as he turned to Daten and continued staring at Ryuji's Digimon. "Well, I guess I can say the same with Daten. That's his current form, but he often changes back into Kuramon because he likes being a plush toy at home. Which I have no qualms about it."
Even I don't know what I digivolve next either.
Ryu nodded to Daten. "Still, that doesn't mean we have to train in case Daten can evolve into a Rookie. That's why we're here in the first place." Ryu then pointed at the remaining cans not standing far from the pair. "Plus, it's a good way for us to help us survive if we get to Daten's home world soon." Ryu hummed again. "By the way, have you guys gone to this city called Terminus City? We're planning to go there to buy some stuff there soon."

Ryuji nodded at Ryu's words before he said "Yes he is stronger than he looks and a martial artist trained in mantis style to boot. I get how someone could not believe that judging by looks alone seeing as he is no bigger than a small plush toy. Digimon are definitely an example of not judging a book by its cover."
Yoshihiro smiled at Daten and asked "The fact that you might become just about anything must be exciting, huh Daten?" When training was mentioned Yoshihiro said "I agree nothing wrong with training. I've been training Ryuji myself recently and he has actually gotten better if only slightly. Maybe one day he'll be able to complete a training session without tripping over his own two feet."
The last sentence had taken a bit of a playfully teasing tone and Ryuji said "Come on, Yoshihiro, behave yourself."
"Oh come on Ryuji, you don't have to be so serious about everything." Yoshihiro said with a bit of a fake pout before softly giggling causing Ryuji to roll his eyes.
When Ryu asked if the two of them had been to Terminus City Ryuji shook his head and said "I'm afraid we haven't though I have heard of the place."
"Terminus is a very big city in the Digital World so if you two do plan to go it would be smart to pack enough supplies and be mindful of your surroundings especially since digimon, while most of us don't harm humans, a few do. Just like there are some humans that are bad news, you know?" Yoshihiro said as he bobbed lazily up and down in the air.

So Terminus City was not like Shibuya or Minato, eh? Ryu hummed while Daten stared at him with a concerned beep.
"Guess that means we can't get there until we're absolutely ready to go there. Maybe during summer vacation where I can go somewhere without being suspected by my Dad," Ryu guessed. "He can be a pain if I try to sneak out during my classes and even that makes me sleepy when I think about it."
Ryu and Ryu's dad said sneaking out is bad!
Ryu said when he saw the message. "Good point, Daten. If I do, my grades will get worse." He sighed. "Either way, I better take your advice and stock up as best as we can."
Ryu and I will become strong! Ryu and I will be careful against other bad Digimon!
The young boy nodded with a grin. "You read his text. We'll be fine as long as Daten is by my side."

Ryu seemed to be taking everything but it was clear he was not aware of the time difference between the two worlds so Ryuji said "Time passes differently in the Digital World than in this one. One day in this world equals about one week in the Digital World, I think." He then looked at Yoshihiro and asked "Isn't that about the case, Yoshihiro?"
"Yup so that means you can spend the whole day in the Digital World without missing any school or getting home too late so you can avoid worrying people." Yoshihiro said not only confirming what his
"If Daten is anything like Yoshihiro then he'll become pretty strong despite his cute appearance. Digimon tend to get pretty powerful based on what I've seen. Life sure got more interesting when I met Yoshihiro that's for sure." Ryuji said as Yoshihiro chuckled.
"Good thing in training digimon reach rookie pretty quickly so you won't be at risk for long, Ryu." Yoshihiro said.

Ryu's eyes perked up at what he heard. "Are you saying that the Digital World was made for me and Daten to explore and discover other Digimon while not worrying about how long will I be gone?!" He exclaimed. "Now that sounds awesome! I can't wait to visit the Digital World!"
I want to explore with Ryu! Daten happily added through text. I want to become a partner and guardian to Ryu to the Digital World!
Ryu grinned as he patted his Digimon's head while listening to Ryuji's explanation about the In-Training's fast growth. "That's good to know. I'm worried about how much training I can give to Daten before he can evolve again. A balanced schedule is a happy Digimon, I think?"
And more time for sweets and games! I like to play games with Ryu!
"Still, even if we might be gone for a few minutes or hours, I need a good excuse to pass off so my Dad won't get suspicious. Honestly, I'm still struggling with Math and Science at the moment and my failing grades mean he might suspect I'm goofing around." Ryu then stared at Daten, who seemed to glare at his Tamer in suspicion. "Well, this technically counts as goofing off since I'm just here barking orders, but still..."
Ryu sighed, seeing he won't make more excuses like this. "I wonder if the Digimon in the Digital World won't eat my textbooks and homework..."
Ryu...
Ryu sheepishly chuckled. He could imagine his Tsumemon groaning over his weak excuse and his hair-brained scheme to get his grades to 100% while he was in the Digital World.

"Pretty much just have to be careful and stay on guard while out there. Most of the towns and cities aren't that bad but it never hurts." Ryuji said to the excited sounding younger teen. "There seem to be multiple humans that make a habit of traveling between the two worlds so as long as you plan ahead you should be fine."
"Yes balance in the schedule is important. As a martial artist I've learned that while training can be fun there are other things that are fun too Daten. Things like tasty foods and games of many kinds." Yoshihiro said floating over to Ryuji landing on his tamer's shoulder again.
"Maybe while in the Digital World you can make friends with digimon good in math and science to help you out so you can improve your grades. Yet I can get it if those are subjects that you just don't like seeing as people tend to do the best in their favorite subjects." Ryuji said.
"There are digimon with unique dietary needs but as long as you tell them that your homework isn't food you should be fine for the most part." Yoshihiro said before bursting out into laughter.

Digimon who might be good at the subjects he was currently struggling right now? Ryu was amazed at the prospect he would be able to meet those kinds of Digimon in the Digital World. "I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for that awesome info dump," Ryu said to Ryuji and Yoshihiro.
Yeah, Ryu and I can't wait to go to the Digital World!
Just then, they heard a beeping sound from Ryu's phone. The young tamer checked it and gasped to see the time on his home screen. "Speaking of which, we need to get back home before Dad does! He said he was going to cook my favorite dinner tonight! Well, if he can get home on time, that is."
Awww... I want to play with another Digimon right now. Daten pouted (by widening his only eye) as he stared at Yoshihiro.
Ryu hummed. "Well, if we can stay for a while... But I don't want to get risk being yelled at for being so late..."
