"Ah, thank you so much!" said Nao, holding tears back as best as she could. This day managed to keep getting worse by the second and the teacher really didn't know if she'd be able to hold everything together until her lunch break, let alone until the end of the school day. Her hands still shaking, she grabbed the phone from Sumire's hands. It was still unlocked, with the mysterious egg on display. That, too, was shaking on the LCD screen. White with red stripes in a cutesy pixelated art-style, like the ones in those electronic handheld games so popular a couple years back. Nao had one when she was a kid but never managed to keep the little rabbit creature thing inside alive more than a couple days, and she eventually got bored of it. In any case, she hadn't installed any app of the sort on her phone, so the view confused her more than anything.
"...what is that thing?" Nao whispered, loudly enough for Sumire to hear. Her gaze stopped on the egg for a couple seconds as she stood there, frozen once again in the middle of the classroom. For the briefest moment, her stress had vanished and was replaced by a strange feeling of longing for that egg, as if it was calling to her somehow. Fortunately, the confused and concerned stares of the students around her was enough to bring her back to her senses. She came to look for her phone, she found it. Perfect.
In a soft press of the thumb, Nao locked her phone again and smiled at the girl right in front of her. Hijikata Sumire, she really was a reliable one.
"Thank you very much Hijikata-san! I have to go now, I can't be late to class two periors in a row, right" Nao ended with a fake laugh to try and hide her anguish. Her cheeks still red and her eyes still teary were telling another story. She couldn't control those, of course. So, if she kept laughing, maybe it'd come true, and her day would really get better somehow. There was no other way to know but to try.

....Man she really seemed to be going through the rough of it huh, it didn't take a lot to notice that her hands were shaking pretty badly, coupled with what seemed to be some mysterious egg thing which, well Clayton decided to move a bit closer to Sumire to be within earshot before asking. "Hey, that egg thing. Was that uhh, digimon related?" Clay was a bit out of the loop since he used a spirit, he had never encountered an egg before but considering it was on the phone and judging by his Senpai's reaction she didn't seem to know what it was, it was a pretty easy guess.
Though after he asked he couldn't help but notice her, kinda frozen there for a moment while looking at the screen, almost like Clay had been a moment ago. "Uhh, hey. Everything ok?" Clayton called out to try and bring her back into the moment, it took another second but she seemed to manage to snap out of it.
But it was the moment after that Clayton noticed the fake laughter, if anyone was good at knowing the difference it was him, cheeks red and eyes seemingly a bit teary. Clayton paused for a moment before giving the best smile he could. "Hey, Senpai." Giving a thumbs up Clay continued. "You're a great teacher, everything will be ok." It wasn't much but hopefully that would help at least a little bit.

Sumire glanced to Clayton for a moment, "Yeah, it's Digimon related. You know Jingo, my water spewing dino buddy? He came from one too." She nodded swiftly. The differences between their occupations was once again apparent.
The near occult nature of what they dealt with interceding with the mundane of their everyday lives aside, it really seemed as if their teacher was...not having a great day. And it was a sort of stress that Sumire could really empathize with.
"Yeah--we all have our off days. You'll do great, trust me." She wasn't always the best with reassuring others, and it showed. Hell, she couldn't even convince her cousin that she was care-...Okay that's oversharing, still.
A low hum came from Sumire's bag. Jingo heard his name be mentioned--so he was wide awake if need be.

"They're good kids." Despite everything, Nao couldn't shake this feeling. If it was for them, and for all the other students around, she knew she could manage. Clayton and Sumire's words worked their magic, and Nao's forced grin quickly turned into a sincere smile. "Thank you again", said Nao as she bowed towards the two students. Her worries melted and it is with newfound energy that she left the classromm and headed back to the other one.
Still, that egg thing on her phone kept bothering her. The notification just wouldn't go away, and new ones even appeared. The following class went by without any issue and aside from the occasional glances at her phone screen, Nao managed to focus on her students and on the lesson at hand. When the bell rang, she went to her next class, then the next, all much smoother and way less stressful than the first one of the day. Kids were listening, she didn't stutter or hesitate, managed to get a couple fun conversations going and was overall fairly happy with herself.
Then, finally, lunch break. A sigh of relief escaped her tired lungs as she sat down at her desk. Teachers usually ate lunch in the staff-room, but Nao liked the lively atmosphere of a classroom. It also somehow reminded her of her own high-school and university days, and she liked being able to talk and exchange with students in a more informal setting. This time, however, Nao was more focused on her phone and the strange icons dancing on the screen than on the bento she had prepared for herself. A serving of rice, some chicken and minced mushrooms, nothing too fancy, but quick and easy to make. As much as she liked it, cooking was not her forte and she more often than not took the easy way out and have food delivered to her place instead of spending time in the kitchen. Actually, Mako probably ate more home-made meals than Nao ever did. This thought kind of scared the poor woman, she truly was not the adult everyone thought she was. With a look of resignation on her face, Nao took a bite of her undercooked rice.
But enough with food and disappointment, something else was on her mind and seemed much more urgent. The application that had suddenly appeared on Nao's phone was called "Digivice", whatever that meant. On the home screen, the app icon was that same red and white egg-looking thing from earlier. Once opened, it was showing a bunch of esoteric icons, a pixelated background looking like some sort of room or appartment, and on top of that background were, instead of the earlier egg, two weird little creatures. One looked like a little black ball and the other was a white hairy thing with loong ears. Some text was written below them, Botamon and Pufamon respectively. Somehow, this sight reassured the young woman. It was just a game. A simple, stupid, cute game. Nothing more. Little creatures living in her phones, nothing to worry about. She had probably installed it half-asleep the night before and forgot about it. Yeah, that's what that was, of course.
Nao let out a loud sigh, drawing the attention of some students in the classroom and some walking the hallways. She quickly realized it and shyly apologized. "Digivice huh...Looks fun."

"Seriously? Man just when I start to think I understand these things..." It wasn't really THAT weird but it was definitely weird enough. Still the best that the two of them could do was try to encourage their teacher while she was having an off day, Clay definitely knew the feeling. Giving a polite bow back Clayton almost went back to his seat before figuring he should ask Sumire. "Should we warn her or something? I don't know what the procedure is for this sorta thing." part of him wanted to try and do something to help but more of him realized he had no idea what helping would even mean!
Still regardless of her answer both of them would most likely be left to sit and spin till Lunchtime came, the lessons were pretty much the same old same old. Any questions that caught him off guard though his spirit thankfully managed to help him recover from by telling him what they asked, another episode didn't seem to happen where the captain's voice came out of Clay's mouth, neither party understood why that was either.
Still Lunchtime came eventually and it'd probably be best to keep an eye and ear out just in case, though the teen decided he'd follow Sumire's lead on this whole deal. Digivices and otherworldly creatures he could handle but ultimately being able to turn into a tiny swordsman or a pirate didn't really seem like it'd help in this situation, or most situations now that he thought about it.

"Yeah, no, these things get complicated very quickly." Sumire noted. Every time someone else she knew got into this whole business, they wound up with a comPLETELY different device with a different set of rules. It was bullshit is what it was! "Warning her wouldn't really accomplish much. It's still an alien, by all technicalities. So it's best to let things happen as they are." Sumire concluded.
The fear of the unknown was potent. Raw. Powerful. As time went on, and lunch came, Sumire had pretty much conspired with Clayton to head back over to Nao's current location. Which she had THOUGHT would be the Staff room. She was not there on first glance. They had to leg it. So...Where was she?
The next thought was searching the classrooms. "I'm gonna be genuinely surprised if she's not in the school." Basically the plan was try introducing her to something like...Jingo. Probably. A big dinosaur in school was a great idea.

After fiddling a bit with that strange digivice game, Nao felt a huge wave of relief wash all over her. There was nothing wrong and nothing to worry about. She closed the application, now was not the time to play games, she'd just look into it when she got back home later today. With that out of the way, there was nothing left between her and her sad sad meal. "I'll cook something proper tonight", Nao lied to herself. The thought had barely crossed the teacher's mind that she found herself eyeing some of the students' bento. Envy. Nao swallowed her disappointment and another bite of her plain white rice. "I'm gonna learn to cook for real this time!", she lied again. In any case, she finished her meal anyway, promising herself for the hundredth to do better from now on. As she was puting her bento back in her bag, Nao's phone vibrated. In just a second, the device was back in her hands. The digivice app had sent another notification. This time it said "Botamon is hungry ". Nao smiled and opened the digivice app again. And just like that, curiosity got the best of her. After all, she still had some time before the end of the lunch break and a whole other hour to spare before her next class. The game screen showed the same background with the same two little creatures wondering around. One of them, the black one, had a speech bubble above it's head, containing a small emote in the shape of a piece of meat. "Oh that's cute. Ok, so, how do i feed this little guy now?", Nao mumbled to herself. Fortunately the kids were too busy talking amongst themselves to really pay attention to their teacher, or she hoped so, at least. The young woman scoured the app, searching for any "feed" button or any menu that let her maybe buy virtual food for her virtual pet. Nothing. The only menu she could find was one showing her creature's name and status. It said something along the lines of "Botamon - Unnamed - Hungry" and "Pafumon - Unnamed - Bored". Uh, she didn't get any notification about the other one being bored, maybe that was less important? She hadn't found anything that let her play with them either anyway, so she was stuck there too. And about them being unnamed, well, she didn't get a prompt to name them in the first place so she didn't even know that was an option. Nao sighed. "Looks way more complicated than the ones I had as a kid...Maybe some kids here play it too? Nah, it's not like I can talk about video games with my students...Guess i'll have to google how to actually play this thing...". Defeated, she closed the app and started an e-book instead. That, she knew how to handle.

Yeah things did seem to go from 0 to 100 really fast anytime digimon is involved, despite the teens natural want to help he had to admit Sumire was right. Regardless of how they went about it. "True, plus considering the day she's had, senpai might just think we're pranking her or something." Despite being pretty sure neither of them were well known for that sorta thing, hard to take creatures from another world as anything more than a prank coming from some school kids.
Going along with Sumire Clayton figured they should try and find her during break, which lead the two of them to head on down to the Staff room, the more obvious choice of where to go but sadly not the correct one. Legging it around Clay reached in and made sure he still had his D-tector on his person before asking. 'Hey captain, don't suppose you can sense if any digi-eggs or digimon are around could ya?' It was a long shot but maybe?
'No Clay me boy, while my senses before be as sharp as any other, if not sharper, such a long time in the deep hath dulled any chance I may have to find any of my kin.' Darn, well that's probably just what happens when you spend an unknown amount of time in the water below.
Now it was time to start looking through classrooms, it was their best shot for now at least. "Yeah, I doubt she'd leave especially after coming in late, best get moving." Clay started making his way through the halls, making sure to ask some of the students he saw if they saw her. Though he wouldn't specify exactly WHAT it was he was looking for them for, just as far as they knew it was something school related.

The end of the lunch break marked the beginning of yet another afternoon. "Only one class to go" whispered the tired teacher to herself. What a day. Fortunately, she'd have plenty of time later and already dreamt of all the ways she could relax and unwind. Lost in her thoughts of home, Nao missed the sound of another notification sent to her phone by the Digivice app. "Maybe I'll go to the dojo tonight...Or cuddle with Mako and watch a movie? I have to shop for groceries too...Aaaah..." followed by a another flow of options, enough to steal a sigh from her exhausted mind. "Y'know what, I'll just try to survive until I get back home, and I'll figure something out then..." closed this train of thought. For the next handful of minutes before her next class, Nao absent mindedly read her notes and texted her sensei at the archery range to tell her she'd come pratice a little earlier than usual today. After the long break forced upon her by her injury, finally being able to visit the dojo regularly was a real breath of fresh air for the young woman. She tried to practice at least two times a week now, to try and get back into shape. Secretly, a part of Nao still hoped to progress enough to go pro and live off of this sport. These thoughts, however, she kept locked away somewhere when she convinced herself that it was too late, that she was too old, that her body couldn't handle it anymore. Nao hesitated for a second or two, unsure if she really wanted to go tonight. Here, she noticed yet another notification from the Digivice app. This one read "Pafumon is hungry ". Ah, well, she didn't know how to feed these little guys even if she cared to, so again, this would wait. After all, Nao couldn't recall a single time she managed to keep her virtual pets alive more than a couple days at a time, back in the days. With a resolute smile, Nao sent the text. *** The rest of the afternoon went and passed like every other. Tired students, focused students, uninterested students, questions unanswered and sentences butchered, the usual. When the bell rang the end of the day, Nao packed her stuff and left in the same hurry she arrived in. She left what she needed to in the faculty office, gently nodded and smiled to the few kids who wished her a good evening and confidently disappeared behind the school gates. Shibuya was bustling at this time of day. That's the one thing Nao really struggled to get used to. So many people, so much noise, no matter the time of day. Not that she hated it, far from it, really. It was simply so different from everything she had ever known that it never ceased to amaze her. Lost in her own head, again, the woman made her way to the dojo. Even though it was far from the first time she went there, she still needed to use the GPS on her phone to not get lost in the maze of streets and detours of the densest city in the world. In any case, Nao made it. She borrowed everything she needed from the dojo, as she had not taken the time to stop by her home to get her own bow and her own kimono. Fortunately, there were not many other persons here today, so this equipment wouldn't be missed. She quickly changed, said hello to her sensi and to the other few fellow students, and jumped straight into practice. Despite the time that had passed, this movement was still burned inside Nao's body. She didn't have to think, it came as naturally as breathing, in a long, delicate motion. Ashibumi. Eyes locked into the target, body turned to the side, bow in one hand, arrows in the other. Dozukuri. Hips and shoulders perfectly balanced. Yugamae. Grab the bow string with the hand holding the arrows, Get ready. Uchiokoshi. Lift the bow above your hand in a single graceful breath. Hikiwake. Draw a half circle to bring down the bow, pull on the string and get the arrow to meet your right cheek. Kai. Unity. Pure armony between your hand, the string, the arrow, the bow, the target. Wait a moment, let it shine. Ten seconds. Hanare. The string leaves the hand almost by itself and flies along the line created by the perfect unity. Zanshin. Do not move. Watch the arrow fly. Its course is the result of this posture, it is the mirror of every most minute details in your being. It is the purpose of Kyudo. Then, yudaoshi, bring the bow down and start again from the very beginning. Nao practiced for two hours, repeating the same movements again and again at the same time as the others in the dojo, following the instructions of their sensei. Satisfied, she took the clothes she borrowed with her to wash them at home and left the dojo, still sweating. Part of Nao wanted to walk back home, but the sun was beginning to set and she was too tired for more exercise tonight. She walked to the nearest train station and sat in a train, ready to fall asleep if she wasn't careful. *** Back home, finally. Nao hadn't opened the door but could already hear Mako meowing on the other side. Hopefully the grumpy cat didn't bother the neighbors... Mako was a pretty nice kitty, so it couldn't have been too bad, right? Nao pushed the door and in front of her unfolded the terrible truth of her absence. The whole place was a mess. The first thing to cross the teacher's mind was that burglars had come in. She panicked, slammed the door behind her and started looking for Mako as well as any missing valuable. “Meooow!”, Nao heard coming from the kitchen. In one step, she entered the room. Mako was there, hiding in a cupboard. And, right in front of the cupboard, sat around Mako's bowl, two weird little creatures. One was a small black furball with big yellow eyes. It was looking directly at Mako, as if waiting for the fat red cat to come down to eat it. The other was a sligtly bigger white mop-looking thing, with long ears and huge black eyes. It was curiously looking around the place and seemed to notice Nao when she appeared. It let out a surprised cry, drawing the attention of its fellow creature. At this moment, Nao's phone kept buzzing, flooded with notifications she couldn't care to look at right now. What the hell were those things? Slowly, as to not frighten them, Nao backed down a couple steps and grabbed a broom from the other room, ready to defend herself if these weird animals were agressive. Still as slowly, she walked back in the room. The animals were still there, now looking intensely at her. "Shoo! Go away!", screamed Nao to try and scare the creatures like she usually does when Mako's being a nuisance. The animals didn't react as Nao expected, and instead just jumped from their spot and moved closer to Nao, still observing her. Now actually scared, Nao started to hit in front of her with the broom, repeating the same couple words in a threatening tone : "Shoo! Move! Get out!". To no avail. Now, the two creatures didn't seem agressive at all, mostly curious actually. Slowly, or as fast as their legless bodies allowed it, the inched closer and closer to Nao as she was starting to break down for real. Scared, she fell on her back, tripping on some coat hanger that had been thrown to the ground. The yound woman hit the ground in a loud thud. Mako rushed out of the cupboard and went to hide someplace else. The two little furballs, however, took the opportunity to jump on Nao's legs. From here, they looked strangely familiar. At this exact moment, the memories from last night came back rushing inside Nao's head. The weird glitch on her computer, the egg on the chait when she left for work in the morning, that same egg on her phone and the two creatures that hatched out of it. Is this even possible? No, surely this is a weirdly elaborate joke. These things are toys, plushes or whatever planted there as some sort of weird prank. Right? Nao took her phone out and saw the seemingly endless list of notifications sent by the Digivice app : "Botamon is happy ", "Pafumon is happy ", "Botamon is ready to digivolve", "Pafumon wants to play!',... That's impossible, right? RIGHT!? Shaken and scared, Nao's vision blurred and she lost consciousness. *** Nao opened her eyes again. The sun outside the windows had set and only the city lights were left to shine a comforting glow in the apartment. Her head hurt, still on the cold hard floor. "Did I pass out from exhaustion? I had such a weird dream...", she mumbled to herself as she lifted up her head to look around. It was no dream, it was no nightmare. At her side, two new monsters were waiting patiently. A purple smug-looking puffball and a big white rat thing with long ears. Nao was about to scream when the two creatures spoke in unison : "Hello Nao! We're your Digimon partners!" Two new notifications had been sent to Nao's phone while she was asleep : "Congratulations! Botamon digivolved into Pagumon!" and "Congratulations! Pafumon digivolved into Kyaromon!" What a day.
