"Good afternoon. I'm Serena Isono, here to visit Kaya Matsui?" Serena asked the receptionist at thew front desk of the hospital, with Gem in her arms pretending to be a stuffed animal.
It was the day after the electrifying incident involving an Aberrant Thunderballmon, at around 10 AM. This Digimon had caused a lot of damage to the Shibuya ward, including but not limited to taking out all of the electricity in Shibuya Academy and cancelling classes for the next couple of days. But the most heinous thing it did was electrocute Serena's upper classmate Kaya Matsui, who Serene respected greatly. If Hikaru had not been there to heal her... who knows what could've happened.
For safety purposes, Kaya had been admitted to the Shibuya Medical Hospital to treat the burns and run some tests to see if she was actually fine, and thus she was spending her time away from school in the hospital. Serena had multiple reasons for visiting her here now, with wanting answers about Digimon in general to be among them, but her main purpose for visiting was just to see for herself if her senpai was truly fine like Hikaru claimed she would be.
The receptionist then directed Serena to Kaya's hospital room, which was up on one of the higher floors. Following the receptionist's directions, Serena eventually arrived at the correct room number. She knocked on it a couple of times for politeness, waiting a few seconds before opening the door and entering. The room itself was small but nice, almost like a hotel room. A flat screen TV was turned on, the volume down low as it showed some form of drama show was playing. Next to the bed were a load of flowers and "get well soon" cards and gifts. On the bed itself was Kaya herself, under the blankets as some sort of... bird creature was sleeping next to her.
Is this... some kind of Digimon?
It had to be. No bird was THIS big, at least not in Japan. It had white feathers on its head while the rest of its body was covered in red feathers, along with black claws. Its beak and feet were yellow, it had red markings on its forehead and eyes, and it was wearing a belt on its head with a red and yellow feather attached to the back. If one were to look closer, they'd notice that the feathers under his eyes were slightly wet, as if he had been crying. And Kaya was just blissfully watching it sleep until she noticed that Serena had walked into the room.
"He's so cute when he's sleeping, isn't he?" Kaya asked Serena and Gem with her usual friendly smile.
"...yeah, he is," Serena said. Even if she didn't know what he was, she couldn't deny that he was very adorable. "Is this... your Digimon partner? What's his name?"
"Hawkeye. He's a Digimon known as a Hawkmon."
"Hawkmon... he looks more like an eagle to me."
"Hi, Kaya!" Gem cheered as he flew out of Serena's arms, prompting both girls to shush him so that he didn't wake up Hawkeye. "Oops, sorry..."
"It's alright, Gem. I just don't wanna wake him up quite yet... did you have a good sleep at Isono-kun's place?"
Gem nodded. "Mhm. I didn't meet Serena's parents, but they seemed really nice. They sing a lot!"
"Well, I'd hope so! I'd be confused where Serena got her musical talent from if her parents didn't like music as well."
By this point, Serena was very confused as to why Kaya and Gem were talking like they were already well acquainted with each other. "Wait, hold on... you know Gem? How?" Serena asked as Gem started hovering around the room, looking for things to play with.
"His father's partner and I have some history... okay, a LOT of history. I consider him to be like an older brother in a lot of ways. I was kind of surprised to see you two in the same place, to be honest."
"Yeah, Gem was telling me about him yesterday... 'Adrian' I think his name was. Anyways, we'll get to all of the confusing intertwining relationship stuff later; are you feeling okay?"
"Well, of course. The doctors said that all I got were some minor burns, they just wanna keep me here for another day just to be sure. It's kind of weird, though... I got hit directly by a bolt of lightning, and all I got were some burns."
"You have Lux-sensei to thank for that. Apparently, he's a purple fox dragon with healing magic. Who would have thought, right?" Serena's gaze then shifted over to the massive amount of flowers and gifts on the end table, ones that Gem was currently messing around with. "Who were all those from?"
"My parents, my classmates, other Digimon friends of mine... look, I'm happy to see you Isono-kun, but let's stop beating around the bush here. You have something you wanna ask me, don't you? About Digimon?"
Serena blinked in response before she sighed, crossing her arms. "Yeah. I have a lot of questions, actually. During that fight... you, Daichi, and Lux-sensei... it all seemed like you knew something that I didn't. Something dangerous. And when that Digimon got destroyed, I saw some kind of black thing be blasted away from it. Matsui-senpai, please tell me what is going on."
Kaya was conflicted. On the one hand, she absolutely understood Serena's desire to want to know the truth, as Kaya herself expressed that same desire on multiple occasions. But on the other hand... she met Gem yesterday, and Serena still had no true idea on what Digimon or the Digital World was like. Was she ready for this? "I want to tell you, Serena... but I don't know if you're ready."
"Ready how? You saw what Gem and I were able to do against that lightning ball yesterday."
"With help from Shiki-kun and Geo. You just figured out how to evolve Gem, Isono-"
"Well, so did Shiki-kun with Geo!" Serena interrupted, stunning Kaya and Gem both. "He's practically as new to this whole thing as I am, but he knows what the heck was wrong with that Digimon and why it wanted to kill us. Matsui-senpai, you almost died. I need to know what's going to come after me, so that Gem and I can protect ourselves, so that we can prevent someone from actually dying. Please, Matsui-senpai..."
Kaya stared at Serena for a few seconds before she closed her eyes, letting out a sigh of her own. "They're called Aberrants; Digimon that have been possessed by an entity known as a Frag, who harbor all kinds of negative feelings towards humans. A Digimon with their own ill-will towards humans are prime targets for Frags, who amplify their own horrible feelings as well as give them powers that the Digimon doesn't normally have. And right now, the Aberrants targets... are humans themselves."
Serena felt her stomach turn to stone. Gem looked even more worried. "Oh my god..." Serena muttered as she plopped down into the chair next to Kaya's bed. "So then... what, are they going to keep coming? Keep attacking people?"
"Most likely... look, Isono-kun, I don't have all the answers, but I do know that we'll be stronger in numbers. There are a lot more Chosen in Shibuya Academy than you think, so you'll always have a friend by your side. Including me and Hawkeye. You don't need to be nervous."
"Well... I'm not nervous," Serena admitted. "At least... not fully. Seeing all those kids be so afraid and not being able to help them... it destroyed me inside. I think I know why I was given a Digimon partner... to be able to protect my home and the people I care about from the Digimon that invade our world... the ones that actually want to hurt people, I mean."
"I wanna do that, too!" Gem cheered, floating over to Serena's side. "I wanna help protect people! I wanna fight the Digimon that give me bad vibes, so that I can keep playing music with my family!"
Kaya smiled. "It sounds like you two are finding your role in this grand story then. I know you'll be a great Tamer, Serena... and you a great partner, Gem. Just... try not to get in over your heads this early on, okay?"
"Says the girl who does that almost religiously."
"Hawkeye?! When did you wake up?!"
"Just a moment ago, actually..." Hawkeye shifted his sleepy eyes towards Serena and Gem. "Ah, hello, Gem... and a human I don't quite know..."
"I think it's about time we get you up to speed, Hawkeye."
