And so it begins... [SOLO]

It had been a relatively normal day to begin with. The sun was shining, not a single cloud was in the sky and it was the perfect temperature. A lot of people seemed to be out to enjoy the weather by having picnics and games in Miyashita Park in which Kirito was located. He was sitting on a wooden bench at the far end of the park with his laptop resting on his knees as he was typing away, transcribing new codes and searching the net. Nearby, a young girl had kicked a red soccer ball in his direction by accident, but he was so enthralled with what he was doing that he didn’t feel the ball roll over and lightly tap him on the leg. The young girl called out to him asking to send it back her way but he hadn’t heard her, typing rapidly as he was nearing the end of the code he was writing. He didn’t break out of his daze until the girl had approached him, picking up her ball before kicking him in the shin with a ‘hmph.’ “Ouch!” He called, reaching down immediately to rub the area with his hand. Looking at her with a confused expression on his face, the girl simply returned the look with a poke of her tongue and stormed away. “What the?” He asked himself, watching after her as she returned to her game with another girl and a boy around the same age.

Choosing not to linger on it any longer, Kirito turned his attention back to his laptop, which in the time that he had looked away, the screen had turned black as if someone had turned the power off. “Wait!” He said allowed, rapidly pressing random keys in hopes it would bring the screen back to life. “I didn’t save it.” He said to himself with slight panic in his voice. He looked at the power indicator just under the screen and the light was green, which basically meant that the power was either 50% or more full. “It didn’t run out of life.” He stated to himself, lifting the laptop up from his knees to look under the base in case the battery pack had become dislodged or anything like that. “Nope, all good.” He said as he placed the computer back on his knees. He began to wonder if maybe the software just needed to be updated but quickly reassured himself that he had actually updated the software two nights ago.
Leaning back into the wooden seat, he reached up and scratched the back of his head while looking at the blank screen with an arched eyebrow. “What happened?” He asked the computer, not that it could actually answer him. Kirito was quite experienced when it came to computers, probably one of the best hackers in Japan, or at least for his age anyway, so it wasn’t like his computer could have been hacked or infected with a virus.

All of a sudden, a strange beeping came from his computer, a sound he hadn’t actually heard his computer do before. He leaned in closer as if expecting it to indicate something, but instead the beeping repeated over and over again until it got louder and louder. “What an irritating sound.” He said to himself, using his other hand to reach into his ear with his pinkie finger and start rubbing it vigorously as if it had been blocked by something. It was just at that moment that the beeping had stopped and a small white dot had appeared in the centre of the screen. It was barely noticeable and Kirito had to lean in further, squinting his eyes in order to see it. “What is that?” He asked aloud, only sit back into his seat with a jump, surprised to see the white dot expand outward to reveal the words: All primary functions have been disabled. Please wait. “What the hell?” He said with irritation in his voice as he reached forward with his hands and began typing in codes in hopes to resolve the issue. “ So someone is trying to hack my computer… Idiots.”

While typing away in code, a tingling sensation ran through his fingers for a split second before he felt a sudden zap of electricity run through his hands. “Yikes!” He called out, people who were enjoying the sun looked over at him as if he was some kind of crazy person and the only way he could respond was with a slight smile and bow. “This is not my day.” He stated, placing his hands on his keyboard again, only to be zapped again. “This is ridiculous!” He called out again, the same people as before looking at him in the same manor, only for Kirito to bow and smile again.
Realizing that he was looking like an idiot in front of all these people, Kirito closed his laptop shut and stood up from the bench, reaching down to pick up his bag from the ground and slinging it over his shoulder before moving to somewhere a little more quieter and with less people. Though, the only place he could find was by a large tree that provided a lot of shade at the back of the park, it made him wonder why some of the people didn’t use this tree as a form of shade as it was the largest, providing more shade. In all the times that he had been to this park, everyone would huddle around all the other smaller trees for shade, but he had never seen anyone under this tree, it was something minor but also something that tended to enter his mind quite often.

Kirito took a spot at the base of the tree, stretching his legs out in front of him and placing his bag in arms reach on the other side of the tree. He laid the laptop on his lap and pulled the lid open to get back to trying to fix it, but when he opened it, there was something new on the screen: Transfer Complete. “What?” he said out loud, clearly confused and even more confused when a bright light erupted from the computer screen. Jumping from the scare, Kirito threw his laptop back onto the ground at his feet and raised his arms up to shield his eyes from the light. Two beams of light shot out of the computer screen, both landing on the ground on either side of him to reveal two different devices. One was round while the other was rectangular in shape. A little confused as to what was going on, he was just about to lean forward to look at the devices when another beam of light shot out from the computer screen and landed on his lap, forming into… an egg.
The computer screen had turned back to the screen in which he was originally working on, but all the code that he had been typing was completely gone as if it never existed. He placed his hands on either side of the egg and looked at it for a moment, blinking multiple times as if expecting all of this to be some kind of illusion. “Since when do computers reproduce?” He asked himself, a little wigged out with everything that was going on.

Still holding onto the egg in his lap, Kirito looked around the area just to make sure no one else had seen what had gone on and lucky for him, the nearest people were two teenagers around the same age as him, making out as if nothing else mattered, like it was life or death. No one had seen what had just happened, but it didn’t make him feel any better about the situation, he was beginning to wonder if maybe his mum had actually spiked his breakfast that morning. Kirito turned his attention back to the egg on his lap but something was different about it. Inspecting it more closely, he noticed a large crack on it that wasn’t there before. He had to think about it for a moment but couldn’t recall moving around recklessly to the point where it could have been damaged since he had first starting holding it… It had only been less than a minute. While looking at the egg, another crack formed around the base which caused him to flinch out of surprise than anything else. “I-its hatching.” He said to himself as if trying to state the obvious. Another final crack formed around the top of the egg this time and with it, the whole top came flinging off. Extending his arms outward and away from him, Kirito peaked over to see what was inside, only to find a little green… thing, inside.

The little green thing inside the egg was curled up with its tail around itself, eyes closed and a relatively average sized horn atop of its head. Kirito had to look away and turn back to it again as if looking away would have helped clear his mind so he could identify the animal, though he couldn’t. He had never seen a creature like this before and in all honesty, he wish he had because it was so goddam cute. The eyes of the creature began to flicker for a second before opening wide and letting out a yawn that was a little bit high pitched, like when a baby would yawn… Essentially though, it was pretty much a baby. “H-hi little guy… girl?” He wasn’t sure and the usual playground rules didn’t work in this situation. Kirito’s dad always said that if he wasn’t sure, always look up the skirt just to double check, something that since then Kirito has lived by, though the little creature wasn’t exactly wearing anything he could identify as such. “Hi!” The creature yawned back at him and this caused him to flinch again in shock. “Y-you can talk?” He asked, his eyes now widened when it responded with a nod, unravelling its tail from around itself. “Yep yep!”

The little creature jumped up and out of the egg which, out of instinct, caused Kirito to toss the empty egg shell aside to catch it in the palm of both his hands. “Wow, you really can talk.” He stated, bringing the little thing closer to him so that their faces were only an inch apart. “Not to be rude, but what are you?” The little green creature smiled, giggling a little afterwards before explaining. “I am Zerimon, a Digimon which is short for Digital Monster. I am from the Digital World.” These words alone were enough to cause Kirito to become skeptical, arching his right eyebrow with a questioning expression upon his face. “Say that again…” Zerimon went on to repeat exactly what he just said but it was halfway through that Kirito cut him off. “Okay, okay…” Not actually wanting to hear it all over again. Zerimon looked up at him with his own questioning look, as if wondering what Kirito was thinking. “So… your name is Zerimon and you are a Digital Monster from the Digital World.” Zerimon nodded with a cute smile and even perkier tone. “And you are Kirito Akagi, 16 years old living in Japan of the Human World.”
Kirito was frozen, staring at Zerimon when he had heard the Digimon state who he was. “How… how did you know who I was?” If a Digimon could shrug without shoulders, Zerimon did this. “I don’t know.” Zerimon honestly didn’t have any idea as to how he knew who Kirito was, the information he had just stated was all he had and of course what he had actually looked like. Kirito was just about to ask a question when Zerimon closed his eyes and began sniffing the air, his eyes reopening brightly as he leaped out of his hands and headed for Kirito’s bag. “Food!” Kirito was a little caught off guard and attempted to snatch at the Digimon, but hesitated at the last second in case he were to hurt it.
Zerimon was already inside Kirito’s bag, rummaging through his stuff until he picked the little Digimon up by the tail. It dangled there, upside down with a packet of salt & vinegar potato chips in its mouth, unopened. “If you wanted food, you just had to ask.” Kirito stated, taking the packet of chips from the Digimon’s mouth and placing him on his lap before opening the packet and placing it beside him. “Go on.” Zerimon looked up at Kirito and smiled before diving head first into the packet, the only part of his body visible being his tail wagging out of the packet.

Kirito watched the little Digimon for a moment before turning back to the two devices beside him. “Hey Zerimon, what are these?” He asked, picking up the devices in each hand and holding them up to show. “I don’t know.” Zerimon said, looking back at them before turning his attention back to the food. Kirito sighed a little and placed the devices back down on the ground beside him, taking his hand and scratching the back of his head. “You don’t know a lot do you?” He asked, poking the little Digimon lightly. Food still in its mouth, Zerimon replied. “All I know is that I came to the Human World to be with you because you are my Tamer, my partner for life.” Looking at Zerimon, Kirito had so many question he wanted to ask, the words alone were a little out of his league and it was the next event that made him realize that he was in a little too deep for this. “Zerimon Digivolve to…” An egg shaped light formed around the tiny Digimon before shattering to reveal a new Digimon. ”Gummymon!”“Zerimon?” Kirito asked, looking at the Digimon’s features to notice that it was slightly bigger, the tail was gone and now it had ears which kind of made him wonder how he was hearing everything that was being said earlier. The little Digimon shook his head and smiled. “Nope, you can call me Gummymon now.” Kirito blinked multiple times before finding the right question he wanted to ask. “What just happened?” Gummymon leaped back up onto Kirito’s lap, the young man flinching when the Digimon landed in the wrong place for a male, but it didn’t hurt a great deal considering Gummymon was so light. “I Digivolved. I am not sure how it works here in the Human World but Digimon change shape as they get stronger, or in my case, eat enough.”

Looking down at Gummymon, Kirito really began to wonder what exactly a Digital Monster was for them to be able to not only come out of a computer but able to change form as well. It was like the evolution of man, starting from a primate and becoming one of the most dominant species on the planet… Was this the next stage of evolution? Were Digimon the new species to come into this world that would then become the most dominant species and the humans would be wiped out, or worse, become slaves?
“No offense, but this is a lot of information to take in and to believe.” Gummymon who was still looking at his ‘Tamer’ with a smile giggled a little. “It’s okay, we will learn things as we go along. It isn’t like you know everything about your own world or life right? Like, do you know where baby human’s come from?” With these words alone, Kirito’s face went bright red with embarrassment. “Uh, um… I do know… But I don’t think… I mean…” He was tongue tied and wasn’t exactly sure what he should be saying in this situation. He knew exactly how babies were made and where they came from, but wasn’t sure how to explain it to the creature in front of him. In saying that, Kirito felt that it was something that didn’t really need to be talked about at his age. “Um… I will tell you when you are older.” He stated firmly, thinking that it was the best option when it came to explanations and the Digimon wasn’t exactly born for very long. “How much older?” Gummymon asked. “Rookie? Champion?” Kirito looked to his Digimon partner with another confused expression on his face. “What?” Gummymon moved closer so that he was now standing on his Tamer’s firm stomach. “Oh right, when Digimon Digivolve, we go up levels. I Digivolved before from the Fresh Form to the In-Training form.” Looking at his Digimon and taking this information in, Kirito started to realize that rather than having ages such as 16 years old or 30 years old, Digimon had stages. “The next level is Rookie, then Champion and then Ultimate. I think there are stages after that but I am not certain.”

For the next hour or so, Kirito watched as Gummymon played around in the grass, enjoying not only this fine day to be outside, but enjoying the fact that he was in the Human World. He had retrieved his laptop which he looked over extensively, only to find that there was no harm done to it, so he placed it back into his bag. For about half an hour, Gummymon was interested in a small butterfly that he gave chase to, which had actually given Kirito some time to think on his own for a moment, watching the little Digimon chase around a creature that it did not recognize. There were still so many questions that he wanted to ask, but Kirito felt that it would be best for the both of them that they just eased into things rather than jumping straight into the deep end. He was sure that Gummymon had some questions too and the last thing they needed was to be overloaded with questions for each other that they become overwhelmed. “Hey Kirito?” As if broken out of concentration, he blinked a few time before looking over to his Digimon who was only a few metres away. “Where do you live?” Gummymon asked and this issued for Kirito to sit up in his position. “Not too far from here, just in a set of apartments.” Gummymon looked at his Tamer with a rather confused and somewhat curious expression on his face and it was because of this that Kirito felt he needed to explain. “It’s a large building where there are multiple homes on each floor. Each home is for a different family.” Gummymon rushed over and leaped onto Kirito’s stomach, he flinched at this as if expecting it to hurt, but it didn’t. Gummymon had a rather eager expression on his face. “Do I get to live in one of these homes?” He asked, looking up at his Tamer with an almost puppy dog eyed look.
Kirito, at first shook his head before adding. “I guess you will have to live with me and my family for a while.” He paused for a moment and thought about this for a second, imagining how his parents would react. “But you will have to keep yourself hidden, my parents live there too.”

“Parents?” Gummymon asked as he rested on Kirito’s shoulder. They were already walking towards one of the exits of the park, his bag over one shoulder and Gummymon sitting on the other. “Um…” He didn’t want to bring up the conversation as to where babies came from again so he simply stated. “Humans older than myself who take care of me… I don’t think they will react as well as I did to your appearance, so it is probably best to keep yourself hidden.” Gummymon was a little disappointed at first but it was Kirito’s next words that perked him back up again. “I will make sure to bring in food and leftovers for every meal, I won’t go letting you starve.”As they made it back to the main road and started heading in the direction of Kirito’s home, people nearby were looking at the two of them strangely, more so at the little green creature on the boy’s shoulder. Kirito was just about to say something to the little Digimon but before he got the chance, Gummymon slid down from his Tamer’s shoulder, down his chest and inside his shirt were he carefully poked his head out at the collar. “Will this do?” He asked, indicating that he was making an effort in hiding. Kirito nodded, trying to make sure it didn’t look like he was insane and talking to himself. “Yeah.” Gummymon smiled and watched as if he could see the whole world from his position. “Good, it’s kinda warm here.” Kirito looked down at Gummymon who looked up so that their heads were basically upside down to each other. “I like it.” Gummymon continued. [EXIT TO = Welcome to your new home, Gummymon]
