[[From the Shibuya River thread Last Rites & First Steps.]] "Aah- whuff!" The breath was driven from Ren's lungs in a great cough that last him gasping and seeing stars. He lay on the hard, dry dirt surrounded by tall grass for several moments, wheezing painfully and staring up at a crystal-blue sky. Trains rumbled somewhere, nearby, and- wait. Dirt. Grass. Sky. Trains? "Where the hell am I? What is this? Where's the- where's Shibuya?" He shot to his free, rubbernecking around frantically in his search for anything familiar. He was standing in the middle of an empty, grassy field under a weirdly blue sky. Animated, almost. In the distance, what appeared to be a train terminal shone in the sunlight, beyond which he could see.. "What city is that?" he asked himself idly. "....Did that train just yawn?"

"Trailmon Terminal, I think," The boy followed, apparently, and seems to glide gently to the floor with a smile, "yes, he yawned. That's a Trailmon, Champion-level. They're usually friendly," He taps the bracelet on his wrist, cancelling his holosuit image.
He quickly 'transforms' into a five foot tall blonde boy with blue eyes, multiple feathery wings, and blue markings on his skin. He's dressed in...an unusual garb, to say the least. "That's better. Now, are you alright? No serious injuries?" He takes a step closer.
And then remembers his manners, "Apologies. We didn't exchange names before. I am Lucemon," He sounds the same, but there's a youth to his face that wasn't present even on his teenager mask. Like a taller, smarter child. With wings. Sure.

This may have been too much for the young man to take in. Ren sat down heavily in the dirt, his astonished gaze on the cherubic figure in front of him. For a moment, he'd been really confused. Nothing had made sense. This though... just ignore the thing about the friendly trains. Yeah. Ren remembered slipping, falling. He should have hit the river, sank into that awful water...
"I'm dead, aren't I. I hit my head on a rock or some trash when I fell into the river, went unconscious and drowned. You look like the kid I was talking to before, the crazy one. You're choosing something familiar to guide me on to the next life, right?" Almost as an afterthought, he glanced down at the device in his hand, whose screen had stopped glowing. In one corner an arrow flashed steadily, pointing away from the city and... what did he call it? Trailmon Terminal.

"I'm not crazy, thank you. Name?" He smiles, "I'm here to help guide you, if that's what you're want, but you're quite alive," He leans in, and pinches the boy on the arm, just hard enough to notice, "besides, I'd like to think I'd save you from drowning,"
Lucemon takes a deep breath, "You're in a place called the Digital World. From what I understand, it...is parallel to your own world. Side-by-side, if you get me? Earth's dominant species is human. Here, Digimon are...pretty much all that exist. We come in all shapes and sizes,"
Oh, sure. Just bombard him with information, that's a smart idea, Lucemon. Maybe continue your rant with an overview of areas of the Digital World, and how Digivolution works.

Ren blinked. "So this is a... Digital World, you said. I'm on the internet, which is a parallel reality to my own where things called digimon exist and look like angels and trains. Okay." Standing up, he hiked his backpack up onto a shoulder and started pacing around, glancing every so often at the screen of this electronic... thing Grandpa left. Speaking of... "So Grandpa meant for me to come here? He left me this thing, the journal..." Ren spun on his heel to face the ki- Lucemon. He was baring his teeth in an almost crazed grin, his gaze electric.
"Cross at the river. Then head south and look for the Ocean," He quoted. "Could Grandpa have meant for me to come here? What's south of here? What's the name of that city?" For a moment at least, Ren had forgotten his fear as his imagination blossomed with the possibilities ahead. This place was new. It was different. Grandpa had some purpose in sending him here, he must have. The adventure you loved...

"Terminus City. If you want supplies, that's the place to go. As for the south..." He has to pause and think for a few moments. He's still young-ish, after all, and hasn't explored everywhere yet, "it's a tropical area. Warm, pleasant. Beaches and the sea, I think. I'm not too sure about between here and there,"
Well, at least the man doesn't seem as sad anymore. A little...overenthusiastic, perhaps, but that's better than nothing. "I'm not sure about 'internet' or any of that, but yes, parallel. Tell me, Nameless, are you planning to head south? Not that I doubt your ability, but in an alien world, I'd rather not leave you alone."

"Head south and look for the Ocean," he quoted again. His pace slowing, considering, Ren stopped in front of Lucemon and held out a hand. "Sorry. Look, my name's Ren, kid. Ren Campbell. It's nice to meet you.. Lucymon? Lucemon, right? The thing is, this is pretty explicit- I think my Grandpa wanted me here, wherever 'here' is. I don't really understand it all yet but I trust Grandpa and he wanted me here. Somehow. He wanted me to go south to the ocean."
He looked down at the little blue device again, more certain the arrow on-screen would remain pointing south. "You're right, this place is totally alien to me. I'm not really sure why you were at the river today, why you spoke to me but if you're up for a trip...
He shrugged. "I could use a guide. And you're literally the only person in the world I know."

Lucemon takes the hand and gives it a shake. He's seen humans do that before, in Terminus City. Some humanoid Digimon, too. "It's nice to meet you, Ren Campbell. If you want to go south to the ocean, then we'll go south to the ocean. It'd be irresponsible for me to abandon you. It can get very dangerous around here, when you're alone,"
He looks towards Terminus City, and then to the south. Right. "I came because I wanted to explore. I wanted to meet humans and learn to understand them. Uh. You. Humans. I want to try and help people, whether they're human or Digimon, and I can't do that without understanding them. However. You should prepare yourself for things to be...different. From what I'm told, this world is very unlike Earth,"

"Look, Kai! A human!" Kai had barely stepped off the Trailmon into the digital world, when his partner Shiro, a white, catlike Digimon spoke up. He looked in the direction Shiro was indicating. "No, Shiro, humans don't..." He broke off. He'd been about to say, 'have wings,' but realized that behind the angelic Digimon there was, in fact, a human.
"Don't what, Kai?" "Ah, nevermind. Don't worry about it." Kuro, his other partner scoffed knowingly, but didn't call him out on it. "I'm going to say hi!" Shiro shouted, bounding over towards the human. Kai sighed. He couldn't fault the Digimon for being cheerful, but he wished Shiro would be more cautious. It wouldn't be the first time his boundless enthusiasm had found trouble.
"Hiya!" Shiro chirped cheerfully. Kai caught up to him soon after. "Shiro! Please, be more polite." He let the winged Digimon finish talking, then bowed to him and said "I apologize for my partner's rudeness." The black Digimon wrapped about his neck roused and added "And I, for my brother's."

Ren would have thought about bolting as the little cat-like thing charged through the grass at them if Lucemon hadn't reassured him that was another 'harmless' digimon. Then his sharp eyes fixed on the figure trotting along behind the creature... Another human! Well of course, if he'd been the first to make it to this 'Digital World' Grandpa couldn't have left vague, cryptic instructions. Still... Another human. Already. Small (digital) world. He reeled back as the catlike thing skidded to a stop, throwing up a small cloud of dust around their ankles.
"Ah... yeah, hi to you too little guy. I guess you're a digimon too?" Turning his attention to the young man wearing the glasses and bowing to Lucemon, he raised his eyebrows at the realization another digimon was around his neck. These things were everywhere. "I'm sure it's fine, he's just excited. Hey kid, what exactly are you doing here? And what do you mean, 'partner'?"
The distant sound of a trailmon's whistle pulled his attention away momentarily with the thought, Are they just shouting 'whoo whoo?' It was a very strange, surreal place Ren found himself in...
And he was kind of loving it.

"Some humans are partnered with Digimon. I've heard about it. The humans carry devices like yours," Lucemon looks at the cat-like creature, "Although I don't recognize this Digimon offhand," He gives the Digimon a nod, and then gives Kai one in turn, "I am Lucemon," The cherubic Digimon offers a friendly smile.
Hm. Is this one going to join them too? There's strength in numbers, certainly, but it could take quite a while for them to walk that distance. Maybe he could just Digivolve and carry them. Yeah. That seems like a logical leap to make. Don't worry, they'll be fine with it, clearly.
"Ren Campbell, are these ones coming with us?"

Kai was grateful for the Digimon's... for Lucemon's explanation of what partners meant. He hadn't expected to meet someone in the Digital World who didn't know. It reminded him of a boy he'd met the other day, who had a Digimon that wasn't his partner. To confirm his suspicions, he asked "A device? May I see it? Ah, this is mine." He pulled his digivice out and showed it to the older man, for the man was certainly older. This only added to Kai's surprise about him not knowing what partners were. Was Kai, perhaps, really young for a tamer? It seemed that every tamer he met was older than him.
"Come with you? Oh, can we, Kai? Please!? It sounds like fun!" On his shoulder, Kuro groaned. She was not as adventurous as her brother, and the idea of travelling did not appeal to her quite so much. "Shiro, calm down. We haven't even been invited yet, nor do we know where they're going." Shiro pouted. Kai sighed, he hadn't been very far into the Digital world, and unlike Yui, his Digimon could not digivolve into combat ready forms if they ran into trouble. On the other hand, he had a while off of school, so he could afford to take a trip, possibly.

"Well to be honest we're not sure exactly. I've got this vague instruction to go south and seek the ocean, so I suppose we start there..." Ren shook his head, disbelieving. Less than an hour ago he was sitting on a bench in a nasty, littered park mourning and wishing for answers. He hadn't found many answers yet, but discovered a bunch more questions. More importantly, there was the promise of answers- and adventures -to come. Now he found himself in another world, a 'digital' world where kids ran around making friends with monsters and going on adventures.
There was nothing normal about this situation. Nothing familiar. What a... relief. After waiting a lifetime for Something to happen, Ren want going to give this up. Even if it was maybe a hallucination while he drowned at the bottom of a polluted river.
"Really kid, I don't really know what's going to happen I've been here less than an hour. But if you and the fuzzballs there want to join us, I'm fine with it if Luce' here is. Speaking of..."
He turned to regard Lucemon curiously, bouncing his digivice thoughtfully in his hand. "So, does this mean you're my partner, since I have one of these too?"

"I'm fine with it, as long as you find a better name for me than 'Luce'," He smirks, "If we wanted to head south, I could shave some time off our journey. I believe if I digivolve, I should be strong enough to fly everyone most of the way," He flexes his wings, for no ascertainable reason.
He blinks as he hears the question, "An...uh...interesting question. Our meeting was quite unlikely, although since I don't know what else Digimon-Human partnerships involve, beyond one human and one-or-more Digimon, and a device, I can't really say for sure,"
He wouldn't be opposed to it, it'd just be nice if the universe had consulted him first.

Seeing the D-scanner, as Scout had called it, in the man's hand confirmed Kai's suspicion. The other boy was not a tamer, but the type of strange human like Scout who somehow turned themselves into Digimon. Further, the man seemed to be unaware of this fact. He sighed, he wasn't really comfortable making himself responsible for the safety of others, being all too aware of how weak he was, but he couldn't let a human wander the Digital World without even knowing what he was getting into.
"Sure, I'll go with you." He left out all the reasons behind it, saying that he wasn't sure the man could handle it just seemed too patronizing. On his shoulder, Kuro groaned, though Shiro let out an excited yelp. Sorry Kuro, he thought, But I can't just ignore this. Even if I'm probably too weak to be much use.
Was Lucemon the man's partner? Also, he couldn't keep thinking of him as 'the man.' "By the way, what's your name? I'm Kai" He went back to considering the question. He knew that the other person he'd met with a D-scanner had had a Digimon with him, but he'd said it wasn't a partner. "I don't really know much myself, but I have met another person with a device like yours. He called it a D-scanner, and used it to turn himself into a Digimon, using some sort of spirit totem. He said the Digimon that was with him wasn't his partner though, so I don't really understand that much."
