The Next Step! [Kai/Ren/Whatever.]

Now this was an improvement. Ren felt stronger, now. Confident and powerful. This was an island in the Ocean, the seat of his power base. He could handle anything. He could take that Sepikmon on. He... couldn't open the damn door. "Seriously?" He asked himself. "I have no hands? Who in the Hell... You know what, screw it."
Outside, the Chief caught his boomerang with an outstretched hand above his head, waving it contemptuously at RaptorSparrowmon. "Ugly," he snorted with derision. "Chief Sepikmon not ugly. Chief stylish! Me teach metalbirdmon!" Rearing back with a shout, Sepikmon brought his arm down to loose the large boomerang- right at RaptorSparrowmon.
"Hydro Cannon!" The door to the Chief's hut blasted outwards in a cloud of splinters and watery mist, the latter remnants of the concentrated water cannonball fired from the cannon on Ren's left arm. Sepikmon, caught in the blast of shrapnel, stumbled at the same moment he was throwing, though it was hard to tell if it would affect his throw at RaptorSparrowmon. "Who break Chief door?!" the Sepikmon yelled, spinning to face his hut.
"I did, ye scurvy knave. Now I suggest ye and yours stand down. Ye lost this one, ye know." Standing in the doorway was a squat figure dressed in black leather pirate boots, a high-collared dark-purple coat and matching bicorn hat. The coat, hat and boots were all trimmed in red and the front of the hat bore an agumon skull jolly roger. Hookmon raised his cannon towards the Chief threateningly. "No! Thief steal another Spirit!"
"Last chance. Call 'em off and leave us be or we'll both find out what Hookmon can do, arr." The Chief, it seems, wasn't having it. Looking around, he raised both hands above his head and started... dancing? Dancing and chanting, words that were unfamiliar to Ren and his friends. What now?

Regardless of the insanity, there's still an incoming boomerang. Fortunately, RaptorSparrowmon has a trick left up his proverbial sleeve, this form's most powerful attack. Green energy builds within his mouth as he opens it, and fires off a powerful green laser, which seems to hold the boomerang in place, the two fighting each other in a way that makes absolutely no sense. "Paradise Blaster!"
Finally, RaptorSparrowmon wins out, to some degree, his blast deflecting the boomerang and burying it in the sand. Close enough. That took a lot of energy though. Certainly not a rapid-fire move. He glances back at Kai to make sure he's okay, before turning his intention to the craziness unfolding before them.

Oh, why had Kai decided to come along? He'd thought that Ren, being new, would need help if a fight broke out... But, despite knowing about Digimon for less than a day, the man was already stronger than Kai felt he'd ever be. He was severely unqualified for protecting anyone, least of all himself. Next time he had the hankering to try and keep someone safe, he decided, he'd recommend someone else. Someone like Ren, who clearly was actually suited for this line of work, unlike Kai. Kai was always the one who needed protection, and he hated it. Even now, he could see RaptorSparrowmon keeping an eye on him, to make sure he was safe. He'd had enough. From now on, he'd keep in mind that the most he could do was provide information, and then stand back while others did the work. Even as he decided that, he hated himself for it. He knew that he just wasn't trying hard enough. In Digimon, in Life, in anything he ever tried. He wasn't good enough, so he had to try twice as hard. If that wasn't good enough, three times. Giving up here, was not how he'd lived his life. maybe that way, he'd actually beat Renji someday.

It was totally understandable that Ren hesitated. Totally. He wasn't a warrior (before today) and this was the first time he'd actually been presented with an enemy and power. Sepikmon didn't however, his dancing stopping abruptly with the Chief facing him and shouting "Dance of Dead!" From the ground around him six ghostly spirits rose, translucent and howling. Three shot off back towards RaptorSparrowmon, screaming and clawing at him. Ren didn't see what happened though, as he dove away from the hut, rolling in the sand and hoping to evade the digispirits.
He didn't evade them. They wheeled in the air and howled at him. Leaping to his feet, Ren didn't have time to use the cannon. He might not be able to scratch his nose with it without taking out an eye, but it was still good for a- "Hook Slicer!" His right hook crackled with blueish light, sharpening it to a razor's edge fine enough to shred two of the spirits before the touched him. The third caught caught him full in the chest, sendlng him tumbling with a pained "Arrr-gh!" to land on his back, staring up at a crisp blue, beautiful wooden tribal mask- wait, what?
"Give Ocean Totem back, little 'mon. Me Chief. Mine." Sepikmon towered over him, leering close to his seeming victim.

"Oh no. Ghosts, or...whatever," RaptorSparrowmon sounds...bored. He'd hoped for something more exciting to fight. Like Tyrannosaurus Pirate Ninja Samurai Space Alien Mecha Wolves. Maybe next week. "Emerald Thunderstorm!" His wing-joints light up, strafing the area infront of him with green electrical energy.
Two of the ghosts are caught in the attack, however the third makes a successful hit, drawing a loud hiss of pain from the metal bird. "Dammit," The damage isn't life threatening, but he'd've preferred to have come through this battle unscathed.
He keeps his eyes locked on that last ghost, preparing to attack it. That stupid Sepikmon is really starting to get on his nerves. Ren Campbell needs to end this quickly, or he will.

"Arr... okay, ye got me. Just one thing," Ren said from his prone position in the sand. Sepikmon's mask tilted curiously. "What tha-" "Driftwood Blockade!" Planks of rough driftwood burst from the sand above Hookmon's hat, knocking the Chief silly as they formed an angled wall perhaps seven-by-seven feet hanging above him. Rolling away so he had room to stand, Hookmon turned to find the last ghost passing through his blockade as if it wasn't there. It howled and clawed at him as it cleared the blockade.
Hookmon dodged aside, his digileather boots kicking up the beach as he charged around the driftwood wall, cannon raised. Sepikmon had scrambled away towards his boomerang, greedy fingers outstretched to take hold of the spirit weapon. "Hydro Cannon!" The superdense watery cannonball barreled out of Hookmon's arm cannon, blasting the sand into a muddy explosion that sent boomerang flying and left Sepikmon staring at Hookmon disbelievingly, sprawled over and covered in wet, sandy mud.
The Chief leaped to his feet and charged at Ren. Strangely, he howled just like the ghosts. Hookmon looked past the angry digimon, down the beach to catch RaptorSparrowmon's eye. He laughed madly gesturing at the charging Sepikmon with his claw.
"He be all yaarrrs!"

RaptorSparrowmon watches with interest. Ren Campbell seems to have become quite a bit stronger. How interesting. Certainly not a bad thing, since only the strong survive in the Digital World. Hm. For now. Mm? Oh. Sepikmon.
"Paradise Blaster!"
A highly focused beam of green energy is fired from RaptorSparrowmon's mouth, throwing up sand as it passes, heading right for Sepikmon. Reconfiguration is a thing, and this Digimon has stolen from them, and attacked them. Well. Ren Campbell started it, but.
Time to end this.

Hookmon stepped back and to his left as Sepikmon neared, watching as RaptorSparrowmon's green energy beam took the Chief full in the back. He flinched a little as the big ape howled, disintegrating in a flash of green light and a dense spiral of digicode that flowed in RaptorSparrowmon's direction. Interesting. Almost automatically, he reached his hook out to catch the object falling towards him- Sepikmon's mask. A little singed on one side, but still pretty whole.
It was quiet. Suddenly the only noise Hookmon could hear was Shiro's scrabbling. He looked up to find all the Monmon passive, approaching RaptorSparrowmon with reverence in their eyes. None of them held a slingshot in their hands. He had to stifle a laugh as the first wave got near. The bowed. In droves. And they chanted...
"Chief. Chief. Chief."
Hookmon approached the thronging Monmon, raised his arm and tossed the charred mask to the ground at his friend's feet. Talons. "Arr harr, Hail yer new Chief Lucemon."
The Monmon learned the chant quickly.

Lucemon reverts to his rookie form in a slightly flashier manner than usual, a halo of white light momentarily flaring around the angelic child, as he chuckles, and grins, picking up the charred mask, holding it aloft and enjoying the moment. It all feels very silly, and really feels more like Ren Campbell's kind of thing.
He holds up a hand, "That's enough. I'm sure you all have things to do. Let's try and get this place ship shape again, hm? Do we have a treasure horde, or...?"
Pirate King Lucemon.
That's a thing now.

They didn't have a treasure hoard. They did have the Chief's hut, built on stilts at the water's edge and filled to the brim with all manner of scavenged trophies. They'd already found one Spirit in there (or at least part of one), what else might they find? They also had an island. The Monmon were pretty loyal until something deleted their leader- they had some cave pictographs detailing what might have been a village charter. Or a grocery list? Hard to say. They were bad artists.
The interior lagoon was sheltered, cool and comfortable. There was plenty of meatfruit in the jungles surrounding the island.

"Come on, Kai, you made me miss the good part!" Shiro complained. Things had just been getting good! He should have been the new chief, not that... Lucemon. Why did Kai never trust him!? He could have taken on the whole village by himself if Kai had let him! But nooo. Kai had held him back, let those other two have all the fun!It wasn't fair!
Kai didn't care about the young Digimon's ego right now. He didn't agree with the fighting in the first place. Surely, there was a solution that didn't require killing Sepikmon. Simply put, he wasn't suited for this type of thing. Why had he thought that going on this expedition had been a good idea? Because he had thought himself superior to these two, of course. But he wasn't. He understood, now, more than ever, just how useless he was. He had to try harder.

Later. Ren shook Kai's hand, thanking him Shiro and Kuro for coming along. They stood on the beach with Lucemon with Whitewater City in sight, Hookmon's Mini Dutchman sailboat pulled up on the sand. "Lucemon and I are going to take a visit to the Real World. I want to get some things done so I can prepare to come back here a while. Come to the island any time... and thanks. I wouldn't have made it without you guys. [Ren's story continues HERE.]
