Another One Bites the Dusk [Tadashi/Elliot/Isaac]

Elliot and Isaac looked at the spirit, wide-eyed. Immediately they began speaking in hushed whispers to each other.
"That looks like one of our spirits!"
"No way. These are artifacts, right? Not living Digimon."
"Alicia's always talking to herself. Maybe she found out how to reach hers."
"So does that mean Kouhei's talking to his when he-
No way. Ours aren't alive. Not like that. We haven't heard a peep out of them."
"Maybe we just have to find out how to reach ours. I don't see why ours would be any different, right?"
The idea of being able to reach the Digimon behind their spirits was equal parts enticing and intimidating. Neither Elliot nor Isaac had any idea what to think of it. To Elliot, that meant it'd be a possibility to always keep in mind. To Isaac, that meant discard the thought outright until otherwise proven correct.
Unfortunately, now wasn't the time to debate Digi-cosmology. It was the time to debate Digi-battling. A strange, bound-up statue stood perched atop the pillar, separating the group from the spirit. It didn't look very alive. It had no visible eyes, no visible mouth, and stood as still as a statue. And yet, it was bound and changed as if by some protective outside force. Why would a statue need to be sealed away? Besides, dragon statues coming to life wouldn't be the weirdest thing the saw in the Digital World. Second weirdest would be a big stretch, even. It'd be somewhere in the back half of the top ten.
They stood at attention, waiting for Tadashi to give the signal to attack.

Tadashi stands there for a few moments, analyzing the situation and running the Digimon through the analyzer on his Xros Loader. "G-Gargoylemon. Virus-type D-Demon Beast Digimon. It can freeze opponents s-s-solid and launch stone projectiles at its f-foes,"
As if it had been waiting for its Poked--Analyzer data to be read aloud, it suddenly spreads its wings and releases a blast of cold air from its jaws. Not enough to harm anyone, but enough to make Tadashi wish he'd brought a jacket rather than his school uniform. Right. It was trying to intimidate them into leaving. He takes a step forward, his partners following.
Gargoylemon shrieks loudly, and attacks! A sphere of white light is generated in its right palm. A large Gargoyle-like statue is suddenly launched across the room at the group from said sphere! Fortunately, Mercurymon is perfectly positioned to intercept this attack, "Dark Reflection," The statue is...absorbed into one of his forearm mirrors. A crackle of energy runs over his body and he grunts, apparently still taking some damage, before he raises his other arm and fires the statue right back at Gargoylemon. A direct hit! But that just seems to have irritated the warden of this little cell even more.
Fightin' time!

The two brothers dove out of the way of the statue in a panic, not realizing that Mercurymon was on the case. Now they were split on two ends of the room, each staring down the Gargoylemon nervously as they tried to figure out what to do.
Elliot realized that he'd be useless in a confrontation if he couldn't get up close, and so the pillar was his best avenue of attack. He made a run for it, arms raised as if trying to protect himself from potential attack, and leaped onto its side. Thankfully, Veemon's light weight and strong upper body strength made it an ideal choice for a climbing Digimon, and Elliot found himself pleasantly surprised by how quickly he was shimmying up the side of the pillar. He'd need to put in plenty of time and effort, but maybe after the climb he'd be able to ambush the gargoyle from below. If, of course, it didn't see his approach and squash him like a bug first.
"Imp-losion!"
That's where Isaac came in. The Impmon hurled his usual high-explosive fireball at the Gargoylemon's head. It was already a deceptively weak attack, and as a rookie it would likely do little more than frustrate the beast. Fortunately, frustration was all Isaac wanted. If he could get it focusing on him, a Digimon with plenty of ways to dodge and befuddle his way out of harm, there'd be no chance of it hurting the rest of the party! Sure, he'd likely get banged up badly if a direct hit ever landed, a bad sign for the already frail Digimon, but he was confident enough in his dodging abilities to take the risk.

"Mercurial Shield,"
A shimmering wall of a viscous silver 'liquid' springs up between Isaac and Gargoylemon just as the latter launches another statue. Fortunately, the shield absorbs the attack before dissipating. Hey, look at Mercurymon being on the ball! Good for him!
Unfortunately, Gargoylemon isn't done and starts to swing at Isaac with its claws. Fortunately, however, its arms are so long that it isn't very likely to hit. At the very least, Isaac has plenty of chance to dodge the blows, so...that's good! In the meantime, Tadashi nods to his remaining partner, "G-go get it,". Flamemon starts to move, his tail igniting like a rocket as he vaults upwards. "Pyro Crash!"
He slams into Gargoylemon's head, and then proceeds to climb up and...jump off it again, heading towards the top of the pillar where Elliot is. He snags the odd-looking totem with a hand, and takes a deep breath. He's going to need a minute before he can propel himself back to Tadashi, it looks like. Ohhhh dear. That just means more time where things can go wrong.

"Shadow Ascent!" Isaac took to the skies on a trail of darkness, flipping clumsily through the air as he tried to dodge around the Gargoylemon's attacks. Isaac swung over one claw swipe, then ducked underneath the next, but unfortunately claw #3 was what spelled the end of Isaac's luck. The heavy hand, almost as big as Isaac's entire body, directly impacted him and sent him flying into a nearby wall. The Impmon peeled off the wall and landed with a pathetic thud, clearly out of the fight for a good while.
Thankfully, his brother snapped into action. He leaped for the Gargoylemon's neck, trying to wrap it in a desperate headlock. If he was able to get an arm wrapped around the (admittedly thin) Digimon's neck, he would promptly try and wail on the back of its head with his free hand. "Machinegun Fists!" he shouted in desperation, hoping to anger the Gargoylemon enough to get his attention off of Isaac. The last thing he wanted was for his brother to get pummeled even worse!

Hey, what do you know? Elliot's doing a great job of distracting Gargoylemon! It keeps swinging at him, but...those arms just aren't suited for reaching that spot. Flamemon powers himself back up and shoots across the room, skidding to a halt next to Tadashi's feet. He holds up the totem and tries to catch his breath, not used to exerting himself like that so often. Tadashi takes the totem from his partner, trying to work out what to do with it. Fortunately, that problem is solved for him, as his Xros Loader begins shrieking loudly, and releases a beam of light from the screen. It expands to engulf the totem, which rises out of Tadashi's hand and quickly assembles itself into a tall, sinister-looking humanoid figure with skulls for hands. "Brother," The creature narrows his eyes at Mercurymon, who seems...rather used to it. "Perhaps we can talk later, as you can see, we're in a bind trying to release you from your captivity, here," Duskmon eyes Tadashi, "This...human is assisting you?" Mercurymon nods, trying to get ready to intercept any attacks that come their way! "I have pledged myself to him, after he rescued me from a similar predicament to your own." "...Then for now, I will help," A long red blade extends from each skull-hand as he gets ready to join the fray! "...W-wait. I h-have any idea,"Oh good. "...Duskmon, l-let Flamemon b-borrow your skill and st-strength. We can b-beat this thing t-together," Duskmon eyes Flamemon, having only just noticed him. Is that surprise that shows in his eyes for a moment? Without missing a beat, he nods, consenting. "F-Flamemon, Duskmon," Tadashi spins the wheel on his Xros Loader, "E-Execute Now! F-Fusion Evolution!"And so it begins again. Duskmon and Flamemon both quickly change into beings of white energy, before they're dragged together and begin to combine. Ooh. Pretty. Sparkly! The finished product is only perhaps four and a half feet tall, but looks mean. Mean like an ice skater. So...uh. Canadian. Mean like a Canadian. "ShadowRinkmon," And once again, Flamemon is in the driving seat. Good. It'd be awful if the thing with sharp edges was being driven by the master swordsman...

Both boys looked on in shock at the fusion in progress, amazed by what they were seeing. The wild flame fighter and swordmaster of the night had so effortlessly fused into something beyond their normal capacities. Wow! Of course, they would've had more time to appreciate if they hadn't been otherwise distracted. Elliot was a little busy doing his best not to fall off the wild beast's back, and Isaac was still seeing double from the vicious ckaw to the gut. Surely the talkative duo would have plenty of questions later, but for now? All they could do was fight.
"Machinegun Fists!" Elliot said again. His voice had a tinge more desperation to it than it did before, as he realized his grip couldn't hold out forever. Not while this Digimon thrashed, writhed, and clawed for him. It was getting more slack with every twist and turn, and it was very likely that these risk-free punches would be Elliot's last. Of course, that didn't stop him from holding on. If he could ensure the safety of the others for just one more second, he would risk it all just to do so.

"ShadowRinkmon, attack!" Wow, two whole words without the stammer kicking in. Today's looking up already! "Quad Speed Stream!". ShadowRinkmon...disappears. Entirely. He's there one moment, and gone the next. Gargoylemon stops reacting to Elliot and sort of...freezes in place. Something seems to strike him a dozen times in rapid succession, leaving him stunned and dazed.
ShadowRinkmon appears a short distance away, seemingly having been responsible for what just happened. Tadashi checks his Xros Loader and...yup. ShadowRinkmon is absurdly fast, and one of his attacks allows him to strike repeatedly in the blink of an eye. Sounds like a very useful talent indeed...
"Alright, let's finish this and go h-home. Get clear, Elliot!"

"Okay!" Elliot replied. He ran to the sidelines, scooping Isaac and making sure to bring him along as well. Slowly the Impmon started to stir, weakly muttering in confusion, but Elliot quickly set him upright again. "You got knocked on the head pretty bad, but you helped keep him busy for a long time," he said, reassuringly. "Now we just gotta stand out of the way because Tadashi's gonna try and do a cool move."
And so stand they did.
Isaac couldn't help but feel a little weak. How had he gotten taken out of the fight so easily? Of course, to a large degree that was his fault for charging into a battle so mismatched against him. Maybe it was more net help than net harm, but it didn't stop him from frankly feeling a little pathetic. He wished he had a do-over, or a chance to try and put some more hurt on the Gargoylemon, but it seemed now that the situation was entirely under control. He settled for just standing and waiting, wondering what Tadashi had up his sleeves.

Arms!
But more importantly, the end of the battle. "A-Alright, ShadowRinkmon, f-f-finish it, quickly!" He holds up his Xros Loader. ShadowRinkmon begins to spin on the spot, "Nightwave Slicer!" He quickly comes to resemble a black and white spinning top, remaining perfectly in place. Dozens of crescent-shaped pulses of purple energy are launched from his body, landing on and around Gargoylemon. Time after time, the crazed angelic dragon is struck, until eventually it can't take anymore. In a flash, it disintegrates, leaving a white and blue Digitama behind in its place.
ShadowRinkmon performs a quick celebratory lap of the room, before coming to a stop in front of Tadashi, who raises his Xros Loader again, "D-De-Xros," and so they do, returning to their usual forms of Flamemon and Duskmon. The latter sways, requiring a few moments to regain his sense of balance after...whatever that all was. Tadashi decides not to waste any time, "D-Duskmon. I know from M-Mercurymon what you and your f-fellow Warriors did l-long ago to protect people. That's wh-what I'm trying to do n-now. Join us,"
Not exactly the most eloquently phrased offer, but. Duskmon turns to eye Mercurymon, "And you believe this human? That he'd help protect the Digital World as much as he would he own? That he'd risk his life to defend our kind?". Mercurymon pauses for a moment before answering, tipping his torso in a sort of...nod. "I do, brother. He has already put himself at risk to defend me, when he first found me. And when I told him that you and the others might be in similar predicaments, he agreed to help without any hesitation,". Duskmon considers for a moment, before turning his attention back to the human in front of him, the two younger ones momentarily forgotten, "Then I will accompany you, for now, and ascertain whether this is true, or whether you're deceiving Mercurymon somehow,"
Tadashi smiles, nods, and then blinks, before rushing over to the Sunderland boys, pretending that he hadn't forgotten them for a moment there. "Are you two alright? Anyone hurt?"

It started off as a really cool move. However, Elliot kind of wished it stopped halfway through. Elliot watched, wide-eyed, as the Gargoylemon was reduced into a hazy cloud of data. He hadn't seen a Digimon die since Kouhei devoured that group of hungering Troopmon. Even then, he was more crazed beast than rational man at that point. This, on the other hand, was the cleanest kill he had seen yet. It was almost disturbing to him how quickly and easily it was, and it stood as a sobering reminder that Digimon were made for combat first and foremost. Would he be capable of such violence too? That thundering crack during his sparring match with Alicia sure had him convinced that he was.
"Is it going to be okay?" Elliot asked in response to Tadashi's question, still in a bit of a haze. However, he quickly snapped himself back into reality, not wanting to seem ungrateful or rude. "Oh! No worries. Isaac and I are fine. Just a bit dazed." Or, at least, Isaac was. Had Elliot even suffered a single attack during that fight? He looked at his brother, checking him up and down for damages.
"Yeah, yeah, I will be okay. How about you guys?" he responded, propping himself back onto his feet. A direct hit from a champion would leave any rookie dazed and confused even in the best case scenario. However, it seemed like there wasn't any significantly bad damage. Bit of bedrest and he'd be perfectly fine in the morning.

Tadashi looks back at the Digitama, and then blinks. Right. If they haven't been doing this long, they might not have...right. He gives Elliot a gentle pat on the head, and a little smile, "It'll be f-f-fine. We l-left enough d-data behind for it to r-r-reform into a D-Digitama. It'll hatch again in t-time and have another shot at life. M-Maybe a better one than the one it j-j-just went through. I'm not a k-killer,".
He's not really sure how to phrase the next bit. Their being here had been unintentional, but there's no denying that the Sunderland boys had been very useful in helping to defeat Gargoylemon. "...Th-thank you. You two r-really helped. I c-c-couldn't've d-d-d-d-d..." He closes his eyes and bites his lip, before taking a deep breath. Sometimes his stammer gets the best of him. He's often thought about how frustrating it can be to want to say something but be blocked by such a minor impediment. Sometimes it can change the inflection he wants to give to certain things as well. His stammer'll get worse, and he'll sound more and more frustrated. A compliment or a phrase of affection can come off as...angry. "done it without y-you,".
He looks over the data of the three Digimon now stored in his Xros Loader's records, and the various combinations he can make with them. The last one catches his eye, especially considering he promised to take the boys back to Terminus. DarkTrailmon, huh...

Elliot smiled a little at the response. There was still a distinct feeling of unease at this cycle of deaths and rebirths and more deaths and more rebirths. How many past lives did some of these Digimon have? What about his spirits? Did something just leave them deader than dead?
What would happen if he died?
Still, he figured it'd be best not to dwell on them. At least for the time being, it seemed like Digimon always recycled in the end. "Okay, good," Elliot said, a lot of the worry in his voice gone now. "There has to be somewhere we can take it, right? I don't think it'd do well hatching all alone in these ruins." Didn't Shi mention some Village of Beginnings place? He figured the egg would've reformed there, but maybe it was too far away or too scrambled in signal by the ruins to make it. With a bit of hesitation, he walked over and picked the egg up. The least he could do for the creature was drop it off somewhere safe.
"No need to worry about it. That is what we have our spirits for, right?" he asked. "We are just glad to see that you are safe." It was a far more calm trip than some of the hectic adventures Elliot and Isaac had been on, shortly. Knowing not everyone ended up as tired, worn out, and sometimes injured as they did from the chaos was quite reassuring.

Tadashi gives the pair a little smile, "Y-yeah, I think I kn-know where we can take the D-D-Digitama," Or at least, Flamemon did. Close enough, right. He eyes his D-Scanner again, swiping a few things around with the dial and beckons as he starts to head for the exit.
"Come on g-g-guys, I'll h-handle the t-transportation," It was the least he could do, after all. He'd dragged them into this craziness and put them both in harm's way. At least they'd managed to come out of it in one piece. As Duskmon, Mercurymon and Flamemon fall into step behind him, all he can think is that he's going to need a name for this little band he's putting together. And a more tangible goal than 'peacekeeping'. It was a respectable objective, sure, but it was...a little vague. And he wanted more than that. Something they could rally behind, and that maybe one day, others could rally behind.
One day.
[End of Hunt.]
