Joint Legacy

Times had been quite busy. Alongside running Caritas, Beverly also had running Whitewater to tend to. Having taken the advice of a wolf digimon she met that one night, Beverly made more public appearances. Be it helping fix up parts of the town or working on that port or the incoming marriage with Garm or just overall mingling with others… it was tiring work. Even Beverly, powerful as she was, couldn’t go without sleep.
This was during one such day of rest, with the others tending to matters for Bev. She laid in her room, half-attentive to the television that was on. Her mind was on other things, and only Ghost was with her.
The two would end up talking with each other about recent events and experiences. However, Ghost could tell there was something on Beverly’s mind. Eventually, the conversation went to a particular point… Beverly outright revealing what was on her mind.
”I wonder, though… what would the old Beverly say to me?”
Ghost looked at her, seemingly puzzled. ”Mistress, you’re on that, again? You are who you are.”
”Ghost, while I don’t let it drag me down like before… I just can’t help it no matter what. To know that I’m only ‘essentially’ Beverly. Another flavor of that old self who died saving Garm.
I think back on her past that I got from your memories. How she wanted to be a famous villain. Sure she founded Caritas, she wanted to sing and what not…”
”Are you saying you’d rather be a villain?”
”No, it’s just that… it still feels weird knowing I’m not exactly like the old one. I’m fine with this life but it’s just a sticking point with me.”
”Well, I’m pretty sure the old Beverly would be proud of you. I mean, villainy aside you really aren’t much different from the old one.”
Beverly sighed in reply, going back to her thoughts. She wasn’t sure if the old Beverly would be proud of her. But it didn’t really matter. It’ll be that one little thing that nagged on her for occasion for as long as she would live. It wasn’t really all that troublesome, though. But Bev’s thoughts would be interrupted by the soft chuckles of her companion, Ghost.
”What’s so funny?”
”After all this time… you still haven’t figured it out? Or perhaps I was too good, and that my acting was enough to even fool you. Well… it wasn’t really ‘acting’. I just made sure I didn’t do ‘too much’ around everyone else. ”
”Ghost, what are you talking about?”
”Think about it for a bit… you’ll figure it out…”
Beverly pondered what Ghost was insinuating… and then it hit her. Even Ghost could feel the mental impact of the revelation she had. Her heartbeat quickened… she could scarcely believe it.
”Y….y-y-you’re… Beverly? The original?”
”And she finally gets it… However, Ghost will do fine still… seemingly fitting since that what I essentially am. Plus the both of us being called Beverly will just get confusing.”
Beverly was flustered, embarrassed, and surprised. It was hard to quite think of the words she wanted to say to her newly revealed ‘predecessor’. But Ghost could see this and rose her hand up. ”Now, now, let me explain…
I, as this entity, was an extension of Beverly’s mind. While I did eventually gain my own will, I always had Beverly’s mind and experiences. I just didn’t have full access to them at the beginning. My mind had to still get used to this body and its will over time.
I initially decided to just retake in all the data of that Hylden and the original body, but I couldn’t. I did take in all the Hylden data because our data was still in my control… at least enough to reform you. And, again, my mind wasn’t quite used to the will of this body so… I apologize in effecting you with my emotions at the time. It was a very stressful time.
Still, I got more and more used to this body and saw you get more accustomed to your role despite having no memories of your own. I… I admit, I was proud of you. You turned out great, and I decided to let you handle things as I step down and be more passive. I wouldn’t feel right retaking my newly reformed body anyway.”
”What about everyone else? What about Garm?”
”As I said before… your only real difference from me was the want to be a villain. You didn’t go that path… but you remained with singing, you maintained Caritas, you stayed with your friend… and now you’re getting married on top of that.
I don’t mind, really. You know as well as I do that Garm doesn’t love us because we were once a villain. He has true loyalty to you. He gets his purpose from you, from us. If you were that different from me… do you not think he would notice and you would lose his interest?”
Beverly nodded in agreement. Ghost continues, ”And if someone other than me is going to marry him, it might as well be another me, hahaha.
You’re doing fine, Bev. You’re taking the lead, and I’ll support you whenever you need it… we’re practically sisters with a joint legacy to fulfil. “
”Yeah… you’re right. Thanks for telling me… finally.”
”Just don’t tell anyone other than Garm…”
”What? Garm figured it out?”
”I never said he didn’t notice, heh heh heh. There’s going to be subtle changes with the whole… rebuilding data thing. I mean, as much as you glare at his butt as he walks…”
”Don’t you stare at it yourself? Since we are basically the same.”
”Every chance when possible…”
The conversation continued onto other subject. Safe to say, though, that Beverly was a bit happier to know that the old Beverly was proud of her. Not that she needed any congratulations or anything like that now… but it did feel better that Ghost… that the original Beverly was there to help her.
