Personality: The color black has assumed a myriad of connotations throughout various human cultures. For example, its enormous presence as a neutral tone indicates personal gravity and mystique, and has thus been adopted for use in haute couture, with the formal tuxedo standing as the paradigm of male sophistication. However, black has long been associated with the more negative aspects of human nature, from a serial killer’s dark and troubled past to the very presence of the Devil himself. But most of all, black best represents the unknown; that which we cannot inherently or readily fathom or comprehend. Ergo, Yuji Shimada can be seen as a self-demonstrating example of the many peculiar yet unnerving facets of the color black, and his Cheshire cat grin more than illustrates this point. He is enigmatic and secretive to both allies and foes alike, and is largely unpredictable to the whole of both worlds—for better or worse.
An old saying claims that a person’s character is who they really are when no one is watching them, and Yuji is no exception to this parable. But the unfettered truth is often uglier than what lies on the surface, and sometimes it’s far better to just let sleeping dragons lie. He is a sociopath of the highest caliber, and is utterly incapable of genuinely expressing any kind of human emotion, only possessing the capacity to understand their meaning on an intellectual level; metaphorically speaking, he knows the lyrics, but not the music. This renders it impossible for Yuji to create and sustain lasting relationships with anyone or anything as a result, something his lack of empathy does not register as problematic or detrimental to his personal growth. He sees other people as nothing more than toys to be played with until they are ready to be thrown away when they are no longer worth his time and attention, setting the stage for an aggrandized disinterest for all of life. Watching a person or an animal die before his eyes holds no more emotional weight to him than the act of sleeping does, to put things into perspective.
Closely corresponding to the last point, Yuji’s shallow emotional state leaves him trapped in a shroud of perpetual boredom and apathy. Unable to fill this enormous void in his soul via conventional or socially acceptable means, his absence of moral guidelines and compassion for others motivates him to seek out extreme forms of personal gratification in the most negative of ways. Vandalism, theft, arson, and even assault are merely minor examples of the heinous acts that Yuji is willing to commit for the sole sake of getting some kind of charge out of his dull and meaningless existence, regardless of how fleeting the rush may be. Crime has become merely a hobby for Yuji, a means to pass the time and get a few kicks out of his dreary, monotonous life. At this point, most people would easily conclude this man as being psychologically disturbed or even wholly insane. But it sure beats living the mechanical lifestyle of the common working man—going back and forth to participate in thankless activities for eight hours every five to six days, cooperating with people who honestly don’t care about you, all in an effort to receive a bi-weekly paycheck just to watch it slip out of your hands as it goes to paying taxes and bills, leaving you with nothing but mere scraps of what you “earned” for nourishment. If crime doesn’t pay, then who’s to say that an honest living does as well?
But what does it truly take to be recognised as “insane”? Exactly how do you describe the fine line between sanity and complete mental psychosis? Wouldn’t an insane person be unable to realize that they are insane to begin with? If that happens to be the case, then surely Yuji Shimada is, by all senses of the definition, both clinically and criminally insane—after all, insanity is how you perceive it. And it is this single truth that undeniably makes him far more dangerous than the ones tied up in straitjackets and kept locked inside white rooms with padded walls. He is a well-practiced liar and manipulator, owing his skills to the numerous therapists and psychiatrists that were assigned to rehabilitate him. While the capability to feel emotion is truly beyond his understanding, Yuji’s numerous counseling sessions on proper moral behavior and various interactions with other people have given him threatening levels of insight on how they function and play a part in the lives of other people. This makes it that much easier for Yuji to fake normality as a whole, all while he studies and observes his chosen victims for signs of emotional weaknesses which he can exploit for his own nefarious ends. He is, as they say, a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The Devil in plain sight.
It can largely be assumed, based on what has been said, that the pursuit of all things fun and exciting is what motivates Yuji to do the things he does. Life is boring to him, thus, it rests on his shoulders to seek out that which gives him a sense of personal satisfaction—even if it means taking sides with someone to get closer to his desired adrenaline rush. His participation in the affairs of Hakainushi is driven exclusively out of his selfish need for exhilaration, and he sees their end goals as nothing more than a means to his own end-game. His capricious nature as an individual renders any attempts to form a lasting alliance with anyone utterly pointless in the long term, and he has no qualms with turning on his colleagues the very moment they begin to present themselves as an obstacle in his quest for stimulation. Needless to say, repeated instances where he back-stabs others for his own personal gain will likely make Yuji a considerable amount of enemies in the future, both on the evil side of the moral spectrum as well as the good.
Appearance:
Tall and lanky for his age, Yuji is physiologically ectomorphic and has trouble retaining body fat due to his high rate of metabolism. His skin is abnormally pale in complexion despite being of full-blooded Japanese ancestry, lacking the typical yellow pigmentation that most Asian people possess, leading others to assume that he is either a social recluse or one who simply just has a milder form of albinism. His short yet neatly-trimmed hair is colored a dramatic lime green, with his bangs partially obscuring his sly facial expressions to create either an unnerving portrait for others to look upon and judge with due scrutiny. Yuji’s eyes almost never open beyond a fox-like squint, but in the rare instances where they do, one will be surprised to discover that his irises are an unnatural and sinister yellow hue.
His sense of fashion is even more fake than his smile, but given his personal taste for such apparel, he never goes out of his way to buy anything short of the genuine articles, and his level of income provides more than enough cash for him to do it. Preferring garments worn in a business-like environment, Yuji can most frequently be seen dressed in a plain, off-white dress shirt, buttoned from top to bottom and kept neatly tucked inside his black dress pants, which in themselves are held against his waist by a designer name leather belt. Accompanying these are three more items of haute couture: a black satin vest and a square-cut necktie of matching shade, completed by a knee-length trench coat with two metal buckles pinned to its lapels. Yuji wears nothing but the most premier of footwear with his clothes, and he accentuates this fact by wearing custom-made patent leather shoes embellished with steel plates over the toes for both added style and protection. Brown, fingerless gloves dress the palms of his skeletal-looking hands. And, as the icing on the metaphorical cake, Mister Shimada is never seen without his signature black fedora.
Background History: Precise details regarding the full past of Yuji Shimada are wholly unknown due to conflicting medical and academic records as well as a number of botched personal interviews with the individual himself. Several verbal accounts issued by people he once interacted with at some point suggest that he was raised in an abusive domestic environment, but virtually no evidence exists to validate these claims, and all efforts to contact his biological parents or any legal guardians he may have been watched over by have proven fruitless. Perhaps even more difficult to understand than his background is the exact cause behind his grossly immoderate disregard for others and his severe moral detachment. Those who knew Yuji on a personal level would be quick to assume that he was simply born this way, while most others aren’t even aware of his sinister psyche to begin with.
According to one of his files, Yuji underwent a severe delay in his verbal development skills, never speaking his first words until the age of four years old. Alongside this, he never appeared to react negatively when exposed to hostile social conditions or stimuli, one of many signs that point to his incapability of genuinely feeling human emotions. But despite requiring constant supervision and additional tutelage in basic communication, he was swift to catch up and was finally allowed to take part in public schooling at six. It is widely believed that Yuji’s more sinister tendencies began to take root at this stage of his early childhood. His desire to interact with other children was entirely nonexistent, as he preferred to sit in the back of the classroom and either watch others go about their business or doodle in his composition notebooks. His academic performance never suffered, though, as he was remarkably bright for his age, but his social skills were about as dismal as they could be at the time.
As he continued to advance his education, Yuji’s complete psychosocial detachment became more and more transparent to his fellow classmates, and soon after, his teachers. He became more analytical, calculating the way he approached his problems as though everything was a scientific formula that could be solved. He rapidly learned to take advantage of others by using their personal weaknesses as leverage against them, then set them up for ultimate personal failure once he got what he wanted. And when he was called out for his antics, he would do nothing except lie and dissimulate his way out of the spotlight. Punishment held no moral consequences for Yuji, as it only served to educate him how to cheat better, fabricate more elaborate lies, and divert all attention away from him in the process. By the time puberty was setting in, he had already become a skilled deceiver and a cold-blooded manipulator.
Eventually, Yuji reached a point in his life where merely spreading the seeds of discord amongst the masses did nothing to excite him. Playing puppet master had its merits, but merely pulling everybody’s strings got boring after a while. At fifteen years old, Yuji took his first steps into juvenile delinquency by starting a small fire inside a trashcan in the boy’s restroom, triggering the fire alarm and resulting in complete evacuation of the premises. Though the building itself survived, severe damage was done to the restroom. And while he certainly hadn’t been aiming to torch the entire school in one swoop, the thought crossed Yuji’s mind many times after that point. The sheer rush it gave him, to be able to commit such a heinous crime at his age and get away with it like he did. The mere thought of it all was enlivening!
At first, his violent pranks were conducted whenever it was most convenient to him, but as time went on they became less and less random. Yuji began to premeditate his plans inside a journal days before choosing to set them in motion, and he never restricted his misdeeds to just small scale arson. He experimented much throughout the remainder of his years in high school, from vandalism to the occasional student assault or two. Most of the time, he would plant any evidence that lingered on someone else, oftentimes choosing people who had nothing to do with him or his criminal antics, creating more unwilling victims in the process. His ability to cover up his tracks by then had become so remarkable that much of the student body had come to believe the school was actually haunted by the vengeful spirits of children who were tormented by bullies, and the school’s reputation took a dramatic nosedive because of it.
But Yuji was smart enough to know that it would only be a matter of time before someone caught on to his escapades. Sure, punishment meant nothing to him in the short or long term, but why risk counting his chickens before they hatch? Up until he turned nineteen, Yuji kept the darker side of him hidden from prying eyes and ears, giving in to his primitive lusts for excitement only when the opportunity for such was just perfect. Looking to his education for ideas, he acquired an interest in the human psyche and desired to improve his ability to hide in plain sight; the least he could do for himself was pretend to be normal, even if such a word had no all-encompassing meaning. He pursued degrees in psychology to help further his understanding of emotions and their influence on other people, going as far as to strive for and eventually acquire a master’s degree in his chosen field. This gave him horrifying levels of insight into the minds of other people, and it also better faciliated his skills at faking a sense of normalcy altogether.
Now twenty-four years old, Yuji has begun to consider advancing his social front even more by aiming to complete his education with a doctorate, hoping to reap the many benefits it will come to provide. Until then, he has taken up internship at the Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital, the largest and oldest known authority on psychiatric health throughout Japan, where he continues to educate himself in the ways of deception and manipulation. There’s nutcases aplenty inside the rooms and halls to practice his craft on, and nobody would even think to point it back at him. After all, nobody would miss these poor saps; they’re serving a far more useful purpose by being his personal test subjects. However, even his prospective future holds virtually no room for pursuing his most primal of desires: pure, unadulterated fun. And sooner or later, he’s going to find a way to get exactly what he wants.
