MPC challenges: Digivolve to President & Fruits of your Labor
"How."
It was a simple question. In the confines of the rather vast office, it echoed in a way that just expressed the sheer disbelief. They had done it. They had actually won candidacy. They were president-elect.
Okay, let's first establish some context here. Squire, the person who had ever so dramatically expressed his disbelief, had been a candidate. In what, you may ask? The digital world's third Presidential Elections. After two horrifying terms, the digital world had been in desperate need for good, competent leaders.
Squire and his oldest friend Kyo had grown up during the first government, and suffered as adults through the second one. Angry, tired and thirsting for good leadership, they had somehow managed to get behind them enough backing to throw themselves into the political game, successfully leading a campaign that had, somehow, led them to victory.
Oh, no, they weren't both president, that would be silly. Kyo was president; she was charismatic and had a way to her craziness that won over crowds. Squire was the Vice-President; he was dutiful, methodical and had a serious air to him that made people rely on him. Somehow, this holy combination, along with the help of multiple other digimon, had managed to take them to the Digital House.
He had been the picture of confidence throughout the entire campaign, but it wasn't until now, now that he was standing in the most iconic of offices, that he realized. Realized how incredible this feat was. They had, against all odds, made it to the top, with no political experience, no real money and no inside help.
His legs trembled under him as he dropped his butt on Kyo's new fancy chair, spinning around idly. "How." He asked simply, the chair slowly coming to stop facing the new desk.
"How did we do it."
A question that would elude historians for years to come. How two exceedingly young digimon managed to outdo veteran politicians with no money and experience would go down as one of the greatest mysteries of the Digital world. For now though... Squire turned his gaze towards Kyo, getting off her chair.
"Well Ms. President. Here we are. We have a long day ahead of us." He said, taking an electronic tablet from the desk. "We have a press meeting in an hour; you are expected to say your victory speech. Then we must-."
They had a long, long term ahead of them. They had made plenty of promises during their campaign. Now they had to put their money on their mouth.

Well, they were here now!
"Feels kinda amazing, doesn't it? President Kyo. Do you like how it sounds? Because I do. A whole lot."
Truth was the this result had given her a massive boost of confidence and ego, while still managing to make her be... well, her. They had gone toe to toe with the political powers of the Digital World and won. Mostly due to sheer conviction and perseverance. And probably because the inhabitants of this place were sick and tired of empty promises. While their campaign hadn't been as good or grand as the other candidates, it had been through the extremely solid base of honesty. And it had paid off, of course. Well, not to say that Yuu had been a pretty damn good campaign manager.
Still, that's how they had gotten through those apparent impossible odds. Now... they were in power. What was their plan? Well, at first, they had to go through their campaign promises. Those had been among the reasons why they had been so successful, and that's why Kyo wanted to follow all of those.
"Yeah, this day will be pretty long. Maybe the longest of our lives, but... I think I'll enjoy it. What about you? This couldn't have been possible without your help. And it isn't as you aren't important, Mr. vice-president, even though it doesn't ring as well as president, but what can I say."
She knew that the schedule was long, and probably overbearing in many aspects. But, if anybody could do it, that was them. Fixing this place wouldn't be easy, but they hadn't signed in for an easy ride so...
"Time to get ready. Are you prepared for this? It'll be intense."

"As ready as I'll ever be." He replied, smiling earnestly. He held out his arm towards the slightly taller, sharply dressed nun, bowing jokingly. "Shall we go, Ms. President?" There was a light jovial tone in his voice. This was a new kind of adventure for them both. "Let's go show the digital world their government isn't completely useless after all." A tall order after the mess the first their predecessors had left in their wake. But hey; it wasn't the most impossible thing that had ever been demanded of them.
It had been two years since they the elections. Progress had been made. It had been a slow start. Much slower than he and Kyo had anticipated. The damage done by their predecessors ran as deep as the very infrastructure of the government. Replacing the corrupt presidents wasn't enough. They had needed to root out the corrupted seeds that had been planted on within the very congress of the Digital world.
Thinking that everything would be smooth sailing from there however, frankly just plain wishful. All kind of accusations and scandals were thrown at their every move. Nothing could be done without meeting some resistance. It was to the point that he was beginning to believe sometimes protest just came for the sake of protest.
It was lucky that Kyo had such a solid conviction. Whoever said that trees that didn't bend wouldn't make it past a storm obviously didn't know what they were talking about, because Kyo had weathered the shitstorm that had been their entire term so far with enviable calm. Her chill was contagious. Whenever he thought he was going to punch someone, her presence was calming. Thankfully so; because even when after they had rooted out the corrupt, there were still far too many people Squire wanted to punch across the room.
However, not everything was terrible. They may have been forced to brace themselves against the shitstorm for every action they tried to take, but take them they did. Change came whether the naysayers liked it or not, and lo and behold, it was good. They weren't nearly done, but already the situation in the digital world was beginning to be much better than before. Much time they had lost while cleaning up after the mess left behind by their predecessors; but now, they was finally growth and progress.
Rather expertly serving a cup of tea, the not so young dragon, handed it to the president of the Digital World, humming softly.
"I'll be honest." He started casually as he gyrated a spoon within his own cup of tea, taking a seat across from the president. "After all we went through during the first year, I'm surprised how well we are doing now." he pursed his lips, looking at his spoon. "I'm even more surprised of how little we've changed as people, however." Power changes people, he had once been told. Other than a slightly inflated ego the first few months after the election, he couldn't quite say he had seen Kyo change much. Himself? He wasn't sure.
Taking a drag off his tea, the dragon set the cup on a table, crossing a leg over the other as he leaned back onto his seat, steepling his finger as he smiled at her. "It's been two years since we first walked into this office. Tell me, Ms. President... what do you think awaits us from here on now?"

Kyo's response was a smile that couldn't possibly be brighter. Game on!
"That's more like it! Now let's go and kick some ass!" Of course, this was on the figurative sense. They were probably just gonna verbally outmaneuver some scrubs that were planted to ridicule them and plant the first seeds of doubt, but... that much was obvious.
And that's because... she just opened the door unceremoniously and went towards the auditorium. Her first speech had to be grand. It'd be more than that, an event to be remembered by the future generations as the end of one era and the beginning of another. Lest to say, these two years hadn't been easy. Even if they all had good intentions and their administration was as efficient as it could be, the trail of disorder left had been enormous. Almost as if a literal minefield had been placed for them, they just found corruption and rottenness wherever they went. It was daunting at times, and even Kyo felt like giving up, but those were just brief moments. Everyone trusted on her, and she wouldn't disappoint.
No matter how many fabricated scandals or rumors. Not even those half-assed assassination attempts would be enough; heck, didn't they know that she could evolve or something? Her rivals seemed to think of her as a mere pushover, and that probably had been their downfall over time. Even if they had to prune the weeds out of a garden that was majorly weeds.
But, over time... their efforts began to pile up. Even if for every problem they solved, ten more sprang, those eventually began to run out. The situation seemed to, at first, stabilize. And then... to even get better! Even if it was little by little, at least now they were on making improvements instead of fixing errors. It felt... strangely great, in all honesty. They still had a long road to transit, and any mistake in here would still be awful, but... at least she could relax a bit every now and then.
And that's why now, the elected duo was on their office, sharing a cup of tea over a moment of respite among the many tasks they had to do. Chatting like this had been impossible some time in the past due to the sheer volume of work they had to do, but now... it undoubtedly felt nice.
Even if the digimon's eyes denoted some tiredness, she managed to stay happy and energetic. This was something she had somewhat grown used to, but... luckily not for long. She took one of the two cups and gave a small sip, taking into Squire's words and reflecting briefly about them.
"Well, trouble couldn't be infinite, could be? I have to thank the people, however; if they hadn't reacted like they did when those hypocrites tried to ruin our images, this probably wouldn't have ended the way they did. It's funny how we gained their support almost unconditionally, you know..." She made a relatively long pause, taking another sip before going on. "But I guess that in the end, it makes sense. Those digimons were so selfish that they probably won't ever gain the trust of this place's inhabitants. Once you ruin it, you're probably done for good. So... I'm really glad that we're doing well. Who knows, maybe next year we can begin the campaign for our reelection. How does that sound? I'd love to fix this place as much as I can before retiring for good, to be honest."
It was funny, but, as she saw the situation, things could only get better from now on.
"And in all honesty. I think we've changed, even if just a bit." She added, almost as an afterthought. "You're more mature and reliable than before for sure. And... I think I've calmed down a bit. Maybe it's that I don't have as much excess energy as before but... I think I got used to this. Still, there's a lot of stuff to do right now to think about the future, even though I think we'll be just fine. What about you? What're your plans for the future?"

Leave it to Kyo to notice such subtle changes. A small smile graced the dragon's lips as leaned back in his chair, giving the president a wry look. She wasn't wrong, he guessed. He hadn't meant that kind of change, but he guessed it counted. The greatest change in them was the fact that they had actually matured. A life of combat and violence hadn't managed that. Being shoved behind a desk forced to oversee decisions that would affect the life of over a million others however, had.
"My plans for the future?" He echoed. Oh, he didn't have any, he supposed. He hadn't thought much beyond this four years. A second election? Perhaps. Would they get re-elected? If the next two years went as well as this past year had, they would. Somehow though, he doubted they would manage it. Something in his gut told him that even with all the changes they had done to the infrastructure, their enemies still held enough power to bring them real trouble. Specially in their next campaign.
"For now, my only goal is make sure we accomplish everything we set out to do, during this period." Because who knew if they would get a second chance at all. After this was all over though? Who knew. Maybe he would go back to archaeology. Maybe he would just retire completely and disappear from the public scene. Or maybe he would get married. "I'll tell you at the end of our term." He promised, smiling teasingly.
Things did not get easier. In fact, they got harder. It seemed like, realizing just how close the two of them were to fixing the problems of their home, their enemies had decided to gather their resources and just hit them with everything they had.
It served as a setback for a good few months. Then he and Kyo quite literally blasted their way through it entirely. With Yuu's help, it was almost too easy to find their detractors, what with the ridiculous amounts of money they were spending all at once. They weren't foolish enough to do it on a single account, but... they weren't smart enough to fool the leader of P.R.O.F.I.T.
They hadn't eliminated their opposition entirely, but a good chunk of it was blown away from this one mistake. Too scared to get caught, the rest of the opposition seemed to go silent entirely. Without a constant stream of detractors, they were able to pass by the congress with much greater ease than they had ever had during the entirety of their period.
All good things however, must come to an end.

It wasn't surprising the Squire didn't plan for the future. A soft sigh escaped Kyo's lips, only to be followed with a smile. She knew that he probably wouldn't be up for a second period, and probably she wouldn't either. But... the probability was interesting to say the least. Retiring from politics? That sounded quite good too, even though they had a held a position of relative influence since P.R.O.F.I.T was a thing.
"Maybe I'm being too ambitious." She said right away. Power certainly got addictive, no matter the shaky circumstances they were into. Funny thing, huh? "You know, spending long days laying on one of Whitewater's many beaches every day until I grow tired of that doesn't sound like the worst of ideas right now. Then... maybe just doing what I did before this thing ever happened, or even discovering new things to do wouldn't be bad at all. I'm sure that it'd be less stressful, if anything."
Still, there was still a not-so small peril in the horizon. If they were going to leave this position, at least Kyo wanted to make sure that there was going to be at least one viable option after her. If it were than before, that they pretty much competed to see which candidate was more corrupt, then all their work would be for naught. And... that wouldn't be a pleasant feeling, for sure. That, however, was something they would have to worry about later. For now, they had more pressing matters to attend, like...
"Might as well seize our opportunity as long as it will last. There's still plenty of work to do, and I'd feel terrible with myself with we failed at it." Of course, not like she wasn't doing all the inhumanly possible to complete her agenda and to complete her promises. Anything less would fail to meet her expectations. And... probably not more than that would fail to meet them too.
"My own plans?" She wasn't really sure about them, in all honesty. What she said were random excerpts out of her mind, but they probably weren't what she really intended to do. "In all honesty? I have no idea. The future seems to be so uncertain right now that I just want to play things as they come. I've always been... that way, I guess? I'm sure that I'll come up with something, however."
Growing bored was probably not among Kyo's abilities. She would find something to entertain herself, that was for sure.
"My only plan is to have a good time, I think. Doing whatever I feel like doing, I guess." Of course. Yuu being a part of that was a no-brainer, and all the friends she had made thus far, if she could drag them too. Maybe she could take them all to a vacation or something in an exotic destination. That would be really nice.
She was shaken out of her thoughts at Squire's last words, tho. A surprise? Man, she'd probably forget that he had said this before those two years came to pass.
"Sure you can't tell me right now? At least give me a hint? Even a liiiiiiiittle one?"
For a president, she sure could be childish at times. Time got to pass, relentlessly and mercilessly. Against all odds, things actually got... harder, much to the digimon's dismay. The opposition would not give up easily, it seemed. Well, in fact, they would not give in at all as long as they weren't taught a lesson.
And that's exactly what Kyo planned. She wasn't vindictive by nature, but in all honesty, she just wanted to be left alone and do her work in peace. Was that asking for too much? Apparently it was.
They had to, once again, fight against a wave of insurgency. This time, however, they were way more prepared that in the past. Plowing through their lies and deception was really easy, and the people deciding to stand up for them helped a lot. It had just taken moving some influences up and, just as that, the culprits had been exposed to the public judgment.
Game over. No more politics for you. That had set the example for the rest of her competitors. Or at least to the ones that liked to play dirty. Risk the consequences, and they would definitely come to you, and even favor her.
Just like that, those two years had passed. All in all, Kyo was greatly satisfied with Squire's and her own performance. They had come up as just a little inexperienced, but now functioned like a well-oiled machine in the strange world that was the political realm. As strange as it was, it had been... fun. And they had made the world a better place while at it; at least now, the candidates for the next period didn't look like selfish crooks. She felt like... she could step down, occupy her place in history and leave the hard work to the next generation. They were imaginative, and, in all honesty, she liked the freshness of their ideas.
"Well. Here we are." They were, once again, in their office. Today was election night; the episode that would be the beginning of the end of their political careers. Well, at least of her own as a leader. "I can't believe we've actually managed to do everything we were proposed to, and maybe a little more. Feels... a little unreal, you know? I can't but feel a little guilty, too. People were counting on us to try for a second period, but I think not going for it is for the better. Public opinion on a president always falls off on their second period."
She giggled innocently at her own joke, even though what she stated was true more often than not.
"I know I've said it more than once, but.... Thank you. I'm pretty sure that without you, we couldn't have been able to accomplish everything we did. You are the most awesome vice-president I could've asked for, you know?"
Endings made her a little emotional, but that was just how things were for her. Even though they didn't mean that something new couldn't start after it.

Ambitious was a way to call it. Overly confident would have been another. But then, there was room for confidence in so much success, he supposed. Where their two predecessors failed, they had so far succeeded soundly. In fact, it made him even wonder if the other presidents hadn't been trying to fuck up the digital world. The thought angered him more than he cared to admit. It also made him reluctant to not try for a second run.
Going back to Whitewater after all of this almost sounded too easy. It was calm and peaceful there. His body almost begged him to rush this entire thing. What he wouldn't do for a night of sleep without the weight of the entire world crushing his shoulders.
But would finally being out of the office truly free them? He couldn't help but feel that no matter what happened, he would always feel responsible. For every little mistake their successors made. For every big mistake. Heck, if they allowed their successors to actually be corrupt he wouldn't be able to sleep at all. Just knowing there was the possibility of someone undoing their hard, stressful work made him to punch something.
"Perhaps I'm speaking to hastily." He muttered after staring into his cup for a while. He wasn't too sure if his feelings would change by the end of their term. But at the moment, he wasn't too eager to give up control to just any fool. No, the position was simply too important. But they couldn't just choose their successors, unfortunately.
Scratching thoughtfully at his chin, he looked deep into his tea in thought. Perhaps they should begin grooming a possible candidate? Someone that fit their particular world views? Their particular style of government?
It sounded like an impossible task. Part of their success laid in their ability to casually fend off any (and there were many) attempts against their life from more conservative and/or radical opposition. There weren't many Super Mega level digimon like them around.
He would have to think deeply onto it later. Search around, make a list, gather the data. Then bring it up to Kyo to get her confirmation. The lucky thing about digimon was that they could be grown into adulthood fairly swiftly. He would have a possible pair of successors for their party ready in two years. Even if he had to train them from baby to Super Ultimate himself.
And of course. Kyo was already fishing for hints.
"Nope."
She wouldn't get any from him!
His job was done. Managing his duties as Vice-President while training and educating a pair of rookies proved to be as hard as he had imagined it would be. He had been spread thin, his stress reaching all new highs as he found himself sleeping less and less and his Ulforce overworked more and more. Apparently, even the Ulforce couldn't help mental fatigue, go figure.
But, he had managed. Two candidates, capable of protecting themselves as they brought along brand new ideas and approaches to the field. He hadn't teach them to follow his lead, or Kyo's. He had taught them the virtues which had helped them remain uncorrupted during the four grueling years.
Now, standing in the office that had served as both their fortress and their prison, he couldn't help but feel nostalgic. His fingers idly tapped at a simple box in his pocket, the dragon's core pulsing in his chest hard as the soon to be former President of the Digital World spoke.
"So we are." He responded, smiling as he turned towards her. Unreal? The feats were impressive, to say the least. That much he would admit. After all the hell the entire world had given them, however? He felt like it was the least Yggdrasil or whatever asshole created digital world could do for them.
He moved to stand in front of the President's desk, laying against it as Kyo spoke once more. He grinned, a slight blush coloring his cheeks. She didn't often compliment him so openly. It brought along a blush he thought that been left behind with his child form.
"Ah, nonsense." He spoke, pushing off the desk and walking towards her. "All of this was mostly your doing. All I did was a little pushing." He said as he rounded around her, before walking back towards the desk. He opened one of the cabinets, grinning as he pulled a... bottle of wine from it.
"Guess who prepared for this special occasion." He asked while grinning. Producing 2 cups from the same cabinet, he sauntered back towards her. The box on his pocket felt heavy.
"Don't suppose I could convince the President of the Digital world to have a drink with me?" He asked, smiling wide as he handed her one of the cups. He quite easily popped open the bottle, before serving them each. Very slowly, he raised the cup towards her, grinning as charmingly as he could manage.
"To the best president the digital world will ever have."

Color her surprised. Kyo had expected some kind of celebration for this ocassion, but alcohol? Sure, that sounded pretty good!
"A drink, huh? Well, I guess I can be down for that!" She smiled brightly, taking the cup that had been handed to her, waiting for the drink to be served." The atmosphere was relaxed, despite the tension of the election. Kyo didn't really know why, but, she felt a slight pressure down her throat. It threatened to strangle the words out of her mouth, but not quite.
"Hope you have more than one bottle." The digimon added, sounded amused. "Because one just won't be enough!"
She didn't know if they could celebrate just yet, but at this stage... she just didn't really care about it. Whether the destiny of the Digital World would be a bright or a bleak one,but at least she knew that she had done her part at making it a better place. Well, at least on her vision; even to her last day, there was people that said that she hadn't been a good president, but she didn't really care about them. She had done all she could and probably more, and for that... she was happy.
For a second, she looked at her vice president, a lingering smile radiating out of her face. And on that very moment, she remembered a promise made long ago. Well, not exactly a promise, but... something along those lines? Yeah, probably. Despite the couple of years that had passed, she was still curious about it. What could it be?
"Say... remember when you told me you'd say something to me at the end of our term?" She said, taking a sip of whatever she'd been served. "Maybe it's not that important anymore, but. What it was? I was so curious back then and... I'm still kinda curious now."
Of course, she was expectant about it. Not being told something that supposedly was important for two years felt like an endless wait. Hopefully it would end soon.

The dragon simply smirked.
"'Course. Didn't expect this to appease such a drunkard." he teased, making no move to get the second bottle. They would get to it eventually, no doubt.
Tipping the cup towards his lip, he swallowed the strong flavor of the wine, shivering slightly. Drinking hadn't been as much of a pastime for him as it had been for Kyo before their election.
They drank in a comfortable silence for a few minutes, Squire not quite feeling anything beyond a slight buzz; his healing factor didn't really let him enjoy drinking as much as he would have wanted during that night.
Of course, it wasn't meant to last. Kyo was not silent by nature. And of course she remembered what he had told her two years ago. Why wouldn't she? Had to make sure she caught him unprepared at all times.
"Oh." He uttered eloquently. "Yeah, that." He glanced down at his glass as he said this, gulping. Boy, he was not prepared for this. He didn't feel any of the confidence and courage he felt when entering a fight at that moment. Just nervousness he hadn't felt since years ago and the beating of his core.
No point in beating around the bush though. Tipping the glass towards his mouth, the dragon swallowed down the entire drink in one swoop, setting the cup onto a table before releasing a sound sigh, a shudder moving up his spine as goosebumps appeared over his skin.
"Well, I've had these two years to think deeply about it." He started, pacing around. His arm reached for the bottle of wine, emptying its contents on his glass before taking yet another drink of it. "You know, between the long hours of work and the stress from not punching enough people." He was hoping a little humor would make him less nervous.
It didn't.
"So... I've thought of going back to my old job." They both knew 'Archaeology' was just the professional term he used for 'risking my neck for largely non profitable thrills inside Ancient and often hazardous Ruins/Temples/Dungeons.'
"But while training our... possible successors, I came to the realization that... I'm not exactly getting younger." He said. "I hadn't realized it, but at some point, life passed by really fast, and now I'm rapidly approaching my 30s." Honestly, he had lived rather long for a digimon; their usual life expectancy didn't see them past a decade.
"So I wanted to get this all out of my chest, before life happens and I'm old and decrepit and regretting not having courage when it really mattered." He said as he reached into his pocket, slowly pulling out a small box. He stared at it thoughtfully, slowly moving it around in his grasp as if to examine every corner of it.
"This isn't really digimon thing. Out of all the things I ever learned of humans, this is the one tradition, the one thing about their culture I guess I've come to truly respect and covet."
"I don't know the specifics of this ritual." He said, turning to face Kyo fully, before stepping towards her and holding out the box in her direction. "But I'll try anyways."
"Kyo," he said, "Will you Marry me?"
