Isaac seemed to bristle slightly at the idea that he hadn't earned the respect of his spirits yet. His eyes narrowed in irritation and his frown hardened slightly. "We've been traveling around the Digital World and busting people out of jams since we've had these," he said, earlier inquisitive tone now a bit sharper and more closely guarded. "We've been proving ourselves for a year now. It's not like we found 'em and then just started wasting all of our time." Seriously, if being a hero for that long and constantly risking their lives wasn't proving one's self, what the heck could've counted?
Elliot was less worried about pride and more worried about consequences. Uric didn't seem worried about being overheard at all. That meant he didn't seem worried about people talking at all. Somehow, this confidence just left Elliot all the more unnerved. Nevertheless, he tried to keep up the conversation. Other people had given way skeevier vibes, and he still gave them a shot. Surely Uric was okay too, especially since he wasn't doing anything to try and hurt them. "Yeah. That's basically how we feel about it, too," he said, Uric's description of the Digital World all too familiar to him. "But that's the kind of thing we've already seen a lot of. Surely after a decade it has to start feeling different, right?" Elliot didn't quite expect this question to be answered, but who knows? Maybe he'd luck out.
Thankfully, Uric didn't seem like he was currently on active business. However, that seemed more due to his business being postponed than out of service. It was a strange priority list. Digital takes priority. Elliot was the first to find himself reacting, asking "Really?" as he heard Uric's description. Sure, the Digital World was full of adventures and mysteries, but it just didn't seem like it'd be the full priority in Elliot's mind. "But isn't this our world? What about school, and work, and family, and love? We can't just trade that all away to go somewhere completely different, right?" Sure, you could find a lot of that stuff in the Digital World too, but the idea of just completely prioritizing one over the other sat oddly with Elliot.

"Relax no one's saying you didn't do anything, I'm saying that your spirits might not of cared of what you were doing. They have desires and the like as well as you do and you have to consider that they don't want to play hero. They could simply want power or perhaps work towards an ultimate goal of some kind."
He'd cross his arms and shake his head; with the tone change of Isaac it seemed that Kan had struck a cord. It was all right though; he could always defuse the situation in some manner or another. Elliot spoke up very quickly after Isaac; honestly it was weird dealing with two kids at once; each with their own questions and problems.
"After a decade it feels like the problems are never ending; that you're always the solution. But that's life in a nutshell anyways.
Another set of questions; another set of answers. Elliot seemed to doubt the priorities if anything. He didn't blame him, the kid had spent more time in the real than the digital after all. Kan was trying to think of the best way to answer....
We would have a word with them child.
As you wish.
Kan blinked as the familiar voice of shattermon rang in his head, the quiet digimon often did partake in the goings of the real but with the entry of two other spirit users it must of taken some interest. He'd set his jaw just a little bit; wondering how the spirit wanted to go about this. He wasn't given much time to consider what it'd do, as rather than a bright light emerging from his digivice to take over the massive quadruped spirit slithered out of it. Face first and a dainty paw planting itself on the ground as it easily towered above everyone. Fourteen feet at the shoulder was nothing to laugh at and the spirit user was thankful it couldn't be seen by anyone but them. Rather than emerge completely the end of it's tail remained rooted in the digivice. It's voidless face turned to the pair and it chuckled dryly.
"This is your world of course children, where you learn to live and let go. But you were picked because of the latter and not the former. Your life lessons in this world can help those in the other. Your school teaches you order, your work teaches you the value of effort. Family and love is no different. The digital is yet another place where you can use these fruits to do what is needed, what is directed. Your job as spirit users... is to balance the two out. Kan here has chosen the digital over the real for simple reasons. His love is there, his life is there. His business is here.
It'd take a seat, the tail flicking irritably as it couldn't escape the hold of the digivice. The lack of the face aside; it was almost as though the spirit was smiling.
"All that considered Elliot. All that considered Isaac. What would you have the digital world be? A place where you're the heroes? A place where you're the hungry warlord itching for another fight? Your choices matter here and there."
Shattermon would pause.
"And it's those choices that you've made that your spirits chose you for. But they wish to guide you, control you..."
Another lengthy pause as the spirit considered it's words.
"....Or destroy you. It wouldn't be the first time we've come across a case of a spirit desiring ill of it's user."

"Well, they could sure do a better job of explaining what they want, then," Isaac said, looking a little at his Digivice as if hoping for some sort of explanation. The smiley face on the back seemed to be sticking its tongue out at him, as if taunting him, but he could've sworn that it already looked like that. It was just the consequence of having an Impmon-based Digivice, surely. "But hey. They lend us their powers when we need, and they don't really kick up a fuss, so at least we're not pissing them off, right?" There was no response, positive or negative. Could there really be so much disdain that they didn't even acknowledge the bros' presence? It was impossible. Not after a year together.
Elliot swallowed nervously at Uric's explanation of his Digital World decades. Life in a nutshell? More like their time in the Digital World in a nutshell. Elliot always found himself so torn between trying to walk away from it all and trying to live up to the duty placed on his shoulders. Was that seriously going to be how it continued feeling for decades? Would he ever get to stop and lay his head to rest? With how little sleep Uric had, it didn't seem too likely. "Does it hurt? Trying to solve all those problems by yourself?" he asked, wondering how anyone's shoulders could stand such a weight.
Of course, any bit of introspection Isaac and Elliot were enjoying was promptly shattered by a true colossus rising out of Uric's Digivice. At the shoulder, it was practically three times their height. It had a gaunt, hellish profile that practically filled the alley, leaving Isaac squinting and tilting his head to try and find any empty air left. It didn't even have a face, and yet it still seemed to be smiling at the duo. To Elliot and Isaac, it almost seemed like a predatory leer.
And then it spoke. It was . . . honestly, less terrifying than the bros expected. If anything, it seemed to be explaining that both worlds offered their lessons and experiences, and what the bros learned in one could be applied to the other. Moreso than anything, it was a game of balancing. And key to that balance was asking the bros what they wanted to do. Elliot and Isaac paused, looking towards each other and trying to think just what they would end up saying.
Isaac was the first to speak. "I want to make a difference," he finally said, standing straight and looking Shattermon in the void. "I don't know how, or why, but I've been chosen for this. And that means I have to be able to do something with it, right? I can't just stand by and let it all go to waste, especially when there are people in need. So this is the least I can do, isn't it?"
Elliot nodded as Isaac spoke, eventually piping up as well. "And I want to be a hero," he said, eyes still fixated on the floor. "I want to be there for all the people who don't have anyone else to be there for them. But . . . " slowly he trailed off, before eventually shooting a worried look at Shattermon. "You said we were picked because of letting go, right? How much do I have to let go of?"

"If they even want to explain; I can't really speak for them. As for pissing them off? You'd know. Without a doubt if they were angry at you."
He'd turn his head to Elliot; a small frown coming onto his face. Did it hurt? Did what hurt? Solving problems? Helping people if he wanted to or helping himself? He could firmly answer that without a doubt in mind. He'd look down at his own digivice; the worn grip and buttons making him think a little longer. He could say that it hurt more when you failed at them than anything else.
"....It hurts failing. It's always the failures and not the successes that stick with you; you could solve a million problems but it's always going to be the one that you don't that will haunt you. I can't say that it hurts solving problems else I'd be lying."
Shattermon of course tilted it's head just slightly when Isaac spoke. The youth meeting the void stare that the digimon had; if there was any doubt that smile that it seemed to have grew twice over. Yes this certainly would do wouldn't it? Agents of change in a nutshell. It was refreshing working with youth that much could be said. It's head turned slowly to Elliot once Isaac had finished; it's head tilting curiously. Upon hearing the hero bit it paused considerably. Children playing hero was something the digital realm was very full of. The problem was getting burnt out by the end of it.
"A difference, a Hero. You both use terms broad but of the same ilk."
The digimon glanced at kan; who rubbed the back of his head.
"You can make a difference; you can do something with your strength. It's as simple as breathing. The idea is using the strength and the ability in the right places. Not needlessly wasting your time. If you wish to help people in need tackle the right problems and not all of them. A hero you can be, a leader you can be, a fighter you can be. How much you have to let go is up to you and no one else; your time to do so is at your heart and none else."
The digimon would consider something before speaking again, it's voice layered with several different emotions.
"Kan is not a hero, he's not some difference maker. He's a man of determination and of passion. I am an creature of power and determination. Reavermon is a creature of desire and faith. Silvermon, the last of the three of us is a creature of power and pain.... Our compatriot Kryptmon is a creature of hatred, power, lust and greed."
Kan stiffened a bit at the mention of Kryptmon; the one that they had told him about if only recently. He glanced at the digimon; eyes narrowing a bit.
"Agents of the people, agents of change... Common both of those titles are. But more common the people that flock to those banner."
It shook it's head again and scratched one of it's ears.
"We will... Help. But better still it seems you desire something yet. Words unbidden and unsaid. Speak or lest forget them later.

Elliot swallowed nervously as he listened to Uric's answer. It was exactly what he had feared hearing, and now his worries were staring him right in the face. By some stroke of luck, Elliot had so far managed to avoid any massive failures. He'd faced setbacks, true. The mostly-faded scar on his chest from the Tundra, which he unconsciously rested a hand against, was testament to that. He didn't always make the wisest choices, as his "training" of Asher had shown. However, a true, undeniable, someone's-been-hurt failure? Never. The idea that these strange and fantastic powers wouldn't be enough to come through in the end, even if he tried his best, was terrifying. "I get it. Thank you," he said, the tremble in his voice one of many hints as to his doubts.
On the other hand, hearing that he and only he controlled how much he needed to let go was really reassuring. He was afraid this life would rise up from beneath and swallow him whole, catching him and every one of his doubts off guard. Being reminded that in the end he could put the breaks on things was far more helpful than he expected it to be. That said, he highly disagreed that it was as simple as breathing. The pain that he had already been pushed through, even at such a young age, sure made it seem less than simple.
The bros nodded along as Uric's values, and those of his spirits were described. At least, of course, until Kryptmon was mentioned. At Kan's stiffening, Isaac clenched his fist slightly, while Elliot shot a worried look Kan's way. He knew all too well what it was like to have a spirit that he personally found disagreeable. Why couldn't Beast spirits be more simple? It was torment.
Nevertheless, Kan seemed to be on their side, as did the spirits he brought to bear. With what they would help with, the bros weren't sure. However, allies were always good to find, even if their purposes were mysterious. Equally mysterious was their insight into the bros' current state of thoughts. There were still some questions left unsaid, even if the bros may have hoped they wouldn't have come up.
Isaac was the first to speak. "How long have you been a spirit for?" Isaac asked, focusing on Shattermon. "And what do you think of the world today? Both ours and yours?"
Elliot was the second, still noting how Kan stiffened. "Are you okay?"

Kan gave elliot a bit of a shrug; he was just telling it as it was. Though there seemed to be some reaction to his words past the few that the boy said. A hand to the chest; and what the man thought to be a sour look. If the note in his voice wasn't enough... well kan wasn't exactly good at re-assuring people. Kind of came from his zone of expertise to be plain with their words; unless you lied of course and the spirits didn't seem to want him to do that.
Shattermon sat pretty calmly; tilting his head just a little bit as Isaac spoke. Humming gently the digimon spirit would bring it's head down to the twin's level; looking ever so curious as to what would spawn those questions. Though it didn't seem to mind them of course.
"I've been a spirit for as long as I can remember, far longer than others that are wandering around now days. My data is old as is the data of the other spirits that kan is in possession of; while we certainly aren't the oldest spirits in existence.... We must at least be some of the older ones. Time really isn't... something we register as firmly as you. The change around us marking the time more than our passing.:
The digimon would consider his second question; tapping the ground thoughtfully.
"As for the human world, I think it strange. Those in power aren't the strongest of you but the most manipulative; those that work hard barely get the little they need to survive and those that barely raise a finger get everything they could possible want and more. Your world reeks of a corruption that ours is just starting to develop. As for our world, it's not pure in any means but it certainly doesn't have the vast population and widespread governments. It's similar to the medevil era you humans had far before technology was at it's crest as it is now."
Kan would nod slowly; hand scooping down to pick up the case.
"I'm fine. I haven't met kryptmon yet; so I'm really not certain what to expect. He sounds like a handful and silvermon is already sort of a pain in my ass."

Isaac shrugged as he listened to what Shattermon had to say. It wasn't all correct, but at the same time it undeniably rang true. "I mean, there's definitely more than one kind of strong," he said. "Like smarts. Or charisma. But I get what you mean. A lot of people really try to use those to hurt others instead of helping them, don't they?" He stood for a bit, trying to ponder questions that were far, far bigger than his little slice of reality. "Well, I know I can't do much. But like hell I'm gonna use what little I do have to lord myself over others. Can't stand people who do that," he said, resolve shining through his voice and his posture straightening.
That said, he was talking to one of the oldest spirits in the Digital World. He'd probably heard that speech countless times, only to have the people saying it collapse the second they got their hands on real power. Even something as strong as Devidramon was just big and tough. Real power was far, far out of Isaac's reach, and he had yet to truly face that temptation. "Are you happy with the part of the world you, Kan, and the others have carved out for yourselves?" he asked. Jeez, now that was a big question!
Elliot, on the other hand, nodded sympathetically at Kan. "They really can be frustrating, can't they?" he asked, trying to push the memories of Gargoylemon out of his head. He really needed to get control of that thing, and fast. "How often do they push against you? Like, do they ever try to take control? Even just a little bit?"
The Sunderland brothers were awfully deep today, weren't they?

"Aye there is, when I said strength I should of been... broader. It's very common for people to use their gifts to hurt others... But that is sadly how the world seems to be directed.
The digimon would pause and tilt it's head slightly; curiosity plaguing it's mannerisms.
"Then many people you must disdain child. But many still that would agree with you."
The digimon shifted slightly and considered something; it took much longer than the other question for it to rouse up it's answer. Was it happy with what kan had managed to carve out for himself? A small variable in the country in the world, and the small amount of power they had in relevance to the massive scale that was indeed the digital world? The answer itself was no; there was no happiness but there certainly was satisfaction in the fact they had their shield that they could hide behind if needed.
"Once we sought for the stars themselves child, once we grew wings and flew forward. Stretching ourselves thin and breaking into the heavens like a man something possessed. Rather than being struck down... our own hubris consumed us and we were dragged back. Wings aflame; allies gone and cast into a sea of oil. Only recently were we able to drag ourselves out of that burning pool set ablaze of our own doing. Happy? No. Sad? No. We are driven for more, for we saw more. But having more... Means having to share; and there are few that we could consider to share with. Allies are in demand and they are often hard to find on the same side of the bridge as we."
The digimon would gesture from the device to kan with a ring of bitterness deep in that voice of duality. Kan rubbed the back of his head, not expecting the digimon to chat so much for one that was often so silent.
"They can be; but more often than not they can be a little needy."
"A little needy says the one that has to borrow power."
"Says the one who uses my own flesh and blood to do things."
"Tit for tat my boy."
The human would shake his head and grin at the next question.
"Silvermon pushes all the time, he really likes the human world and always wants to interact with it. Shattermon doesn't really anymore. And reavermon being the guide often wants to take control; but that's more for showing our hands than anything. I expect this next... venture to be something of a twat, until he learns the balance the four of us have."

Shattermon's answer made a lot of sense. Strong opinions like that tended to put a huge target on one's back, whether a target for allies or for threats. Already Isaac's refusal to stand by if he encountered someone in trouble had gotten himself into quite a bit of trouble, yet also earned him some steadfast friends. "That's life, isn't it?" he asked, thinking about what Shattermon had to say. "Anything you do's gonna get you some friends and some enemies. Unless you sit on your butt all day, those lines are going to be drawn. I might as well make sure I get the ones I'm happy with, right?"
Then again, Shattermon had already seen that kind of struggle. In fact, based on the poetic imagery he was calling up he had seen it to a far larger degree than Isaac could ever fathom. The idea of anyone's own thirst for glory consuming them and dragging them into the unknown sounded horrible. What the heck could you do when you were your own worst enemy? Then again, he knew firsthand how bitterness could make life far worse. If there was one thing he was grateful for about this trip to Japan, it was finally getting away from the biggest source of those vile feelings. "So for the time being you're biding your time, making sure you won't cast yourselves back into the sea," he said, voice somewhat lost and thoughtful. "Well, hopefully when the time does come to share, you find the proper allies to share it with."
Elliot didn't really listen to Isaac's philosophical brainstorming, too busy giggling as Kan and Shattermon bickered. Why couldn't Gargoylemon be like that? Then again, even in the best of times Gargoyle never spoke, so it wasn't like having more aware spirits would give him that kind of benefit. "I mean, don't you guys both need each other?" Elliot asked. The spirit couldn't exist without the flesh. The flesh wasn't too capable of big change without the power the spirit gave. All things in balance, right?
That said, at least none of Kan's spirits sounded too megalomaniacal. "I'm glad they're happy to be here," Elliot said, smiling placidly. "How long did the others take to get used to all of this? And is there any way they can help the new guy adapt?"

"Very much so, it's just how things are and there isn't much to get upset about."
It'd consider something thoughtfully; as though the youth's words had a distinct effect on it. Endless questions the two of them seemed to have; all the better that they learned everything they could no?
"very much so, it's been so long for the group of us I don't think we have as many lines drawn as we should. Mayhaps we should change that...?"
Kan would nod and glance between the two kids. He looked thoughtful just like his digimon; as if they were on the same wavelength in this regard.
"Yes in essence; there will be a time for when we will slowly start to work up to what we had... or what we sought rather. But time is no object; we're in no rush. If it takes another decade or two then so be it. We'll eventually find someone proper to share with it, but there's no point dwelling on a hunt not yet started."
"If it takes two more decades I might as well just retire!"
"A man such as you retiring? Perish the thought."
"Well that depends on Gretel."
"Ah yes. The wife. Of course."
The digimon and human would pause at the question; looking at one another, then back to the twins before looking back at one another. Kan was the first to burst out laughing; followed shortly by the digimon. Who's unearthly chuckle was practically overwhelming compared to the man.
"Need one another?"
"If that was the case, we'd be at one another's throats so badly we'd never get anything done! Nay, it's not the need that drives us so much as the deals we've made with one another.
"Shattermon get's sundays, he's a fan of the lazy weekends.
"I used to have Saturdays, but silvermon wanted them once he learned about the morning and evening cartoons."
"Reavermon likes his Wednesdays, always reading the papers."
The two of them paused again and glanced at one another.
"It took some time."
"Shattermon took two years working out things with kan, eventually they reached an accord. By the time they found me they were more business partners than anything. it was fairly easy for me to be convinced to join in the venture, silvermon was the quickest one to agree when he heard of the festival of the cherry blossoms."
"Favorite color and all that"
"THEY SMELL GOOD AND THE COLOR IS PLEASING TO THE EYE."
The two jumped a bit and looked down at the digivice; it's screen flickering in agitation. The human shook his head and a grin plastered itself onto his face.
"It's just time, the digimon needs to decide what it wants and wether or not I can actively help it. With three spirits chatting at one spirit it should be decently quick to figure things out."

It seemed like Isaac had just motivated Kan's spirits, and even Kan himself, into getting back to work on some grander designs. Was that a good idea? With Shattermon being nothing but kind and helpful so far, Isaac was less apprehensive about Kan than he initially was. On the other hand, the nature of Kan's "business" was still quite mysterious and even worrying to Isaac, and taking that to a larger scale could have some repercussions. Nevertheless, Isaac knew too well how bad ennui and listlessness could feel. If this was going to be helpful for Kan, then Isaac didn't quite mind how this turned out.
It seemed like Shattermon had some ideas, talking back and forth with Kan about retirement plans and the wife. In a lot of ways, it was like watching an inside joke they weren't privy too. After all, why did they just start laughing? It didn't help that Shattermon's laugh was so unnerving, taking the previously awkward-yet-pleasant situation and making it a good deal more terrifying. If Shattermon being a giant wraith had faded into the background before, now the bros remembered exactly how scary he could be. Good thing he was on their side!
If Isaac's words had struck a chord with the duo, Elliot's seemed to amuse them with their incorrectness. It seemed like their spirit partnership was less of need and more of convenience, which left Elliot a bit confused. "So wait. If you guys weren't with each other, what would you be doing now?" he asked. "How much free reign would you guys have without a body to channel yourselves through?" So curious!
Also curious was the personality each spirit was demonstrating through their preferences. Silvermon in particular almost seemed like a kid, drawn so strongly to colors and motion. It was the kind of wonder that the bros weren't quite sure most Digimon held, with how quickly they seemed to go to a state of relative adulthood. Maybe Silvermon would get along well with Kuu.
"Well, I'm glad you guys have it all under control," Isaac said, smiling. "Maybe when we go looking for spirits again, we'll take a few pages out of your book."

"I'd probrably be in the digital world still, roaming around in the darker parts of the forest. Feasting on unsuspecting digimon. That or in the dark realm which is home to my kind; if you thought I'm a one of a kind monstrousity you'd be surprised."
"I'd be running my shop full time. No wife, no friends. Just me and the money I make."
"....quite a bit. Just.... not as much as I have now."
"Some spirits wander and can interact with their surroundings, some can't and some are stuck in objects that they like. With spirits you really never know where or when you'll find them."
I'D BE STUCK IN THAT SILVER MIRROR STILL.
Both the spirit and it's user paused; reflecting on where the large wolf like digimon had come from. While certainly the strongest out of the three; it's life had been incredible dull in the mirror it had been stuck in.
"Reavermon would of still been in the digital world come to think of it.
"He was a neighbor of mine for a long time, when he vanished you can imagine how curious I was."
"Neighbor in loose terms mind you. spirits don't exactly have to settle down if they don't want to."
"The ones that do.. well. End up in objects or go back into the data stream. Some sort of rebirth cycle I think. Wouldn't really know."
The human would shake his head again; these kids didn't need to use any pages out of their book. Their own experiances would certainly shape them in other ways than kan's stream of misfortunes could.
"If anything; just be careful. Not all spirits want to co-exist... though that's kind of obvious I'd think."
He'd sigh and glance at the large spirit like digimon.
"We're going to the digital world sometime within the next few weeks. Kryptmon will be found. If you wish to come along; you may."
"Not going to rush this time?"
"Nay. You're going to have to get some foul weather equipment as you called it."
"All right."

It was quite interesting. If it wasn't for them finding each other, Kan and all of his spirits would've been scattered throughout the world and pursuing far less lofty goals. Heck, Kan wouldn't even be married! It was just a testament to how much the Digital World changed the lives of everyone involved, and how much spirits and users alike needed to rely on each other to find success. Alone, they'd live calm, placid lives. Together, they could achieve great things. If anything, it proved Elliot's earlier question about needing each other right.
That said, the idea of loose spirits got Elliot quite concerned. "Wait, they can just wander freely like that?" he asked, surprised. "I always thought they were, you know, like this." He pulled out his Digivice and flicked through it for a bit, producing his human spirit totem. He wasn't going to start Digivolving in the middle of the alley, but he was at least going to show off what he was talking about. "Are some spirits just completely disconnected from all of that?"
That seemed to be the last question either of the bros had, though. Besides that there was only one thing left to address, and that was the possibility of finding Kryptmon. Kan and his spirits invited them along, and it seemed like they would finally have the chance to be a major help. "Count us in," Isaac said, grinning confidently. "How should we get in touch? Phone?"

"Some can, some can't. Really depends on the spirit.
The human peered at the totem; a small frown touching his face. He'd shake his head slightly. It wasn't always like that; if it was then the digital world certainly would be a strange place... The spirit tilted it's head slightly; it's attention focused on it's user.
"Some are. Though as shattermon said, it really depends on the spirit."
The human paused and considered how they'd get in touch. He certainly could give them his number; it wouldn't change too much since it was just his shops number rather than a cell phone. He'd nod firmly the large spirit spiraling back into the digivice before kan deposited it back into his pocket.
"Phone would probably be the best, My business has a land line."
The human would write down his business's address as well as the number on a small piece of paper. His next action was of course to offer it to the pair of them; curious to see who would take it first.
"Don't be surprised if gretal answers."
