A flurry of shimmering, brightly coloured fireworks painted the dark pallet of sky. With amazing propulsion, they shot up at various speed and then exploded, filling the dark sky up with shimmering colour or pattern. That was what would bring in the New Year, the end of 2016 and the start of the next.
Boom! Another spray of explosion and a shimmer of red, blue, green and gold filled the sky and then slowly faded into nothing. Erys stood – watching transfixed as the final rocket shot up and then burst into a shine of red in the packed town center. “Woah! That was so cool,” came the sound of one of her partners, held tight in Erys’s arms. A bright orange in colour which caused him to stand out vividly in the crowd. Although, quite thankfully – no-one would notice him taking through the loud murmurs of people talking about the fireworks. “You don’t have fireworks in the digital world?” she whispered to the creature who kept trying to bounce out of her arms. With a head shake, it tilted its head and simply said, “not really, just a few attacks – I guess.”
Before Erys would reply, a slightly dumpy man moved up to the podium on the middle of the wooden platform. A thick white moustache bounced slightly as he poked his portly finger against the microphone to check it was on. After a moment, he began to speak – “Hello everyone! I do truly hope you enjoyed the display. It has been a difficult year but now it is time for us to usher in the start of the next. The problems of the last have now gone and lets have high hopes for the new year! It is said that the first dream of the new year – your dreams tonight – will foretell the luck of the year to come. With this, I do hope that your dream too, is a nice one, a good one and one that will show you 2017 will be a good year. Thank you everyone!” He gave a heavy handed wave, bowed twice to each half of the audience and then stumped away towards a group of people standing behind him.
“He talks a lot,” said Sunmon giggling to himself, before letting out a wide yawn. “Sleepy, sleepy now.” Erys looked down at the tiny orange sphere and said slowly, “I don’t think I ever asked you, Sunmon. Do Digimon dream?” After a moment of thought, Sunmon looked up at Erys, right into her strangely coloured eyes. “I think so, we sleep, we eat so I’m sure we dream. I just…I don’t really remember them though.”
As the crowd began to disperse slowly, Erys made her way in the streets and back towards her house. It was a short ways away and it gave her time to think and consider dreams and how they might somehow be able the luck of the dreamer. Anything was possible, I guess. I mean, Digimon exist right? These little monsters which can evolve into larger forms and live in their own alternate world far far up in the sky or so she assumed.
With a flick of her key, Erys quickly pushed her door open, which led onto the living room. It was black and silent, not a single light illuminated it. But, she had expected this, her mother had obviously gone to bed as it was – as she looked at her watch – very late. She quickly climbed the stairs and entered her loft bedroom. The sound of fireworks still rang out in the distance and random shimmers lit up the room through the large skylight. As soon as she sat down on the bed, Sunmon bounced from her arms and with a bright light digivolved into a larger version of itself. More like a demon crossed with a monkey and a salamander. “That’s better, I can moooove now,” he stretched out and moved towards the other figure in the room. It was another creature, this one was more like a canine or wolf. “Hey big brother! You missed all the sky booms!”
Strabimon simply huffed and laid back against the wall, “It’s okay. I don’t mind.” With a yawn, Erys changed into her pyjamas and then laid down on her bed. “They said Strabimon –- that your first dream. The first dream of the year will forte—tell your – ” She didn’t get chance to finish the thought, as quickly as she laid down, she had fallen fast asleep. What would her first dream be. It should be something good.
The images formed quickly in her mind’s eye. A haze of spiralling colour which began to warp and change, first appearing as as fireworks. Just like the real versions – she had seen hours before, they shot up before Erys and burst into bright colours and then faded. For several minute, there was nothing else and it seemed the dream was over until it appeared again. An orange blur which formed from a bright light and then settled on the shape of Flamemon, smiling. After a moment it faded too and formed into a blue blur – Strabimon appeared from the haze. Nodded and waved before fading away.
The surroundings of the dreams changed into a wild jungle, then a frozen wasteland and finally a barren desert before again settling on a tiny village. A village built with tall structures which appeared to be made from foam. Soft childish shapes imprinted with various designs, and then it moved forward so the shapes surrounded a bunch of objects. Many different stone cradles with tiny Digimon in them, each of them appeared to be asleep. What a strange place. Finally, in the midst of the cradles stood a blurred figure whom she was sure she didn’t know. Orange and fluffy perhaps? Wrapped up in a shawl? It was difficult to tell.
It moved again. To another location which she recognised as her school – her mind’s eye moved through the main doors, zoomed up the stairs and took a left, a right to a tiny room. The sign on the door was unreadable but it didn’t seem to matter. The door burst open to reveal a slightly empty room with a desk in one corner with a pile of paper on it. A tiny wooden table in the other with tea cups littering the top. The floor was littered by cushions all around it. The owner of the room was also blurred, silver and gold perhaps? But it was round and shiny for sure.
The dream again shot away from them to reveal another Digimon that she didn’t know. Strange and primate-like but with long hair which is kept running a comb through. It shot a peace sign at Erys and then again it shot forward back towards her partners. Flamemon and Strabimon held out their hands to Erys and they together pulled up into the familiar sky of the digital world. They together soared together in silence through the brightly digital sky for so long, she wasn’t sure how long but it felt like hours.
The dream faded away as soon as it appeared and Erys awoke hours later in the early hours on the first of January, 2017. Would this all come true and would it really foretell the year to come?
