It was early morning and the sun was only just starting to rise which shadowed the mountainside with warming orange glow. Lissa and her partner, VeeVee had camped overnight so they could perform a sneak attack on a ‘trouble-making thief’. Just before she had left the Candlemon village, she had been asked to help them with another problem they had. A pest problem. Every week, early in the morning – a cart of food is brought to the Candlemon village. Although for the past three weeks, the cart has always been intercepted by something angry, white and furry.
The cart was left in the middle of the path as always, ready for the Candlemon to collect, except with one extra addition. Lissa’s cunning plan to catch the beast in the act was to hide in the cart under some blankets so they could jump out and surprise it. It seemed too easy at the time but the blankets were making it stuffy and it was getting difficult to breathe but they needed to help and help they would! It took another hour until they felt a large hand grabbing at the blanket. With one ripping motion, it removed the blanket and stared down with large saucer-like eyes and tongue sticking out. “I’m sorry, no free lunch for you!”
Lissa and VeeVee stood up, heroically. “You can’t just take someone else’s food, y’know. That’s not fair. So this is your one and only warning. Leave now and don’t bother the Candlemon again or you’ll get hurt.” The Gorillamon merely roared loudly and slammed his fists against the cart, shattering it into pieces.
“Vee Headbutt,” without any warning, VeeVee shot like a missile at the Gorillamon. His rock solid head clashing with the primate leaving a large bump on its forehead. Nursing the bump on its head with its single normal arm. The oversized monkey face was turning red as its ferocious temper grew. So much so, it began to slam its cannon arm against the trunk of the tree causing leaves and branches to fall in droves. It roared clamorously and ran directly at VeeVee. Thankfully, the nimble dragon was able to jump up into the branches of the trees above. This merely made it angrier as it pounded the trunk of the tree with both its cannon and fist.
“I got to do this, y’know. You won’t leave those poor villagers alone and they need their deliveries of fruit,” VeeVee said apologetically. This merely made the Gorillamon even more enraged as its face turned a darker beetroot red. It held out its cannon in front of it and fired. A blast of blue light shot from the barrel and cut the tree. With a terrible splintering noise, the tree collapsed. VeeVee fell along with it, landing with a crash in the pile of splintered wood. “Now, I’m mad.”
“Now it’s my turn!” The Gorillamon had turned its back and it was a perfect time for Lissa to jump down and perform her patented ‘Lissa Justice Kick!’ right in the back of the head of the oversized monkey. It turned, growled and set its sights on Lissa instead.
“You didn’t forget about me, did ya?! Boom Boom Punch!” VeeVee spun his arms like a windmill and slammed them directly into the chin of the Gorillamon. This was their teamwork at its best. “Let's finish this up! Ready, VeeVee. Digi-Armor Energize!” VeeVee’s body transformed into its more adult-like form. The fiery armor, gauntlets, and helmet shimmered in the sunlight as it stepped forward for battle. “Fire Rocket” Flamedramon body burst into an aura of bright flames and launched forward like a firework, grabbing the Gorilla around the chest and sending him soaring off the cliff and down to a lower path. “That should be enough to scare it away from stealing, ever again.” Wiping her brow, Lissa smiled brightly at her partner in victory.

"See, bro? I told you I'd show you the cool parts of the tundra sooner or later." Isaac grinned proudly as Elliot took in the mountain sunrise, clearly enthralled by its soft orange glow. "Still pissed at me for suggesting this, or are you good now?" It was clear he wasn't getting an answer, with how laser-focused Elliot currently was on the skies. Instead he just laughed a little, glad his idea was vindicated. The cool, crisp air was doing wonders for their nerves, too. Even Elliot had managed to rest well today, an absolute rarity in even the best of times. Maybe after so much fighting and exploring, this was exactly the kind of break they needed.
When the sunrise's warmth had finally passed, oranges giving way to gentle pinks, Elliot turned to his brother and smiled. "Thank you. Today was really ni-" Unfortunately, a piercing crack had rung through the air just then, cutting Elliot off. He whipped his head around, clearly startled, as he tried to find the source of the sound. "Isaac, what happened? That sounded really bad," he warned, making sure to take a few cautious steps away from the ledge he stood by. "That wasn't the rock, was it?"
"No, no. That sounded way different. Wood?" he asked, tapping his foot impatiently while trying to puzzle out what was going on. "If we can hear it, it's probably real close. And I think . . . that way!" He pointed north and to the west, by some mountainous cliffs. "Maybe if we're fast enough we'll be able to help out." As much as both of them wanted to relax today, neither of them could really ignore a mystery. Besides, what if someone was in trouble?
The two of them knew they were close when they saw a blast of blue light strike into the horizon. They hastened their pace as they realized just what was going on, hoping it wouldn't be too late to try and break up the fight. However, both brothers stopped short when they saw what happened next. A human just leaped up and kicked the aggressor, a Gorillamon, in the back of the head. It didn't seem to hurt much, but it certainly got the Digimon's attention, setting up perfectly for her Veemon partner to resume the assault. In the end, that had been enough time for the Veemon to Digivolve and spear the Gorillamon right off of the cliff they were fighting on. Both of them looked on in a bit of shock, trying to find out what had just happened.
Isaac seemed somewhat worried as the human involved herself, fists clenching slightly as if preparing to warm up his D-Tector and get into the fray. Digimon weren't to be trifled with, after all. He'd learned that firsthand. Elliot, on the other hand, watched on with wide-eyed excitement. Sure, he'd fought plenty before, but he had never seen a non-transformed human try to help like that. By the time their plan had worked, he couldn't help but shout "That was so cool!"
It seemed even after all this time in the Digital World, the bros hadn't quite seen everything yet.

The battle was over quickly, thanks to the power of Flamedramon and the teamwork of Lissa between and VeeVee. “Phew… well, that’s the end of him,” Lissa said, wiping her brow and peering over the cliff at the small crumpled form that lay below them. “I doubt he would want to come back after that and if he does. I’ll just take him down, again,” VeeVee smirked, swiping his long clawed gauntlets in front of him which caused a small spark of fire to burst from it. After a second, Flamedramon glowed again and then transformed back into his smaller form, Veemon. As always, an orange light shot from his body and fired back into the D-Terminal hanging from her belt.
The two of them had been so into the victory they had failed to notice the footsteps and voices closing in on them. Lissa turned to find the two boys right behind her, which led her to stare at them and in turn stared back at her. One had a rather hard face and a stern expression, one seemed more carefree and had a brighter, kinder face. “How’s it goin’?” Lissa asked both confused but an overall kindly way, her hands cupped behind her head. One of the boys seemed impressed with their battle while the other looked slightly apprehensive. “Don’t worry. Don’t worry! I’m Lissa, the Hero of Justice and protector of the village to the north – and, this is my partner VeeVee.” She said, turning to point to the blue dragon who smiled as equally bright. "Nice to meet you."

Elliot's eyes seemed to spark with excitement as soon as the words Hero of Justice were mentioned. Of course that was the case! Only a true hero would charge into battle against something so much bigger and tougher than her like that. And to look so relaxed after all was said and done? That was truly the mark of greatness. Needless to say, Elliot was already really impressed. "I saw! That was a really cool fight," he said.
Of course, in all the excitement, he was forgetting something pretty important. "Nice to meet you, too," his brother said, filling in that ever-important detail. "I'm Isaac, and my bro here is Elliot." He looked more relaxed now that he saw the human wasn't in any danger. Sure, her rash actions would quite likely put her right back in danger if she didn't keep an eye out, but that could be something to worry about later. As is, it was fine.
"How did you do that, by the way?" Elliot asked, talking quickly and excitedly. "What did it feel like? Were you scared?" Elliot was scared getting into fights, even when hidden behind a Digimon form and the protection of his brother. He couldn't imagine what it was like doing it on his own.
As Elliot excitedly struck up a conversation, Isaac peeked over the edge of the cliff. Yep, that sure was a Gorillamon, alright. Those Digimon were known for fierce temperaments, but also their surprisingly clever nature. If it was still going to try picking fights, it likely wouldn't pick such difficult targets next time.

Blinking in confusion, she repeated the boy who spoke in a quick and excited tone; “Do what?” In her whole time as a hero, she had never been asked that before. Elliot carried on equally as excited asking if Lissa had been scared during her battle. She couldn’t help but let out a little giggle as she said, “Course not. I just want to help people. No need to be scared if there is courage in your heart, you know?”
Lissa couldn’t help but notice the other boy, Isaac looking over the edge of cliff at the still sprawled body of the Gorillamon who seemed to have fallen unconscious. “Oh, don’t worry about the Gorillamon. He was stealing food from a village delivery, so he needed to be scared away from doing it again. I think that it wont do it again.” She actually sort of felt bad for the thing as it only had following its natural instincts. After a minute, Lissa stepped forward and put a hand out to Elliot and then to Isaac. “It’s really nice to meet ‘cha. I have a question though. I have VeeVee--” she said, pointing towards Veemon who was staring at the two boys in interest. “– who are your partners? You have them right?”
To be fair, Lissa was unsure if people could actually enter the Digital World without a partner. Maybe it was a normal thing or maybe not. Either way, she smiled brightly at each of the boys and waited for their responses.

"Yeah, I know what you mean," Elliot said, nodding thoughtfully. "I try to stay that way, but it can be really hard sometimes. I mean, some of these Digimon can get really big, and really tough looking." Briefly, Elliot remembered the Myotismon that he and Isaac had fought. He still had the scars from that dark blast it used, even after regressing from Digimon form. And that was only the third scariest thing in that fight! The fact that Lissa refused to let that kind of thing worry her was really inspiring.
Isaac was busy looking at the realities of the situation to think much on its ideals. He nodded at Lissa's explanation of what went on, finally stepping back from the cliff. "Yeah. Can't talk everything down, after all. That's just what needs to happen sometimes," he said, the sureness in his voice a sign that he had been in situations just like this over and over again. "I'm sure that it'll be scared off, at least for the time being. Even more feral Digimon are usually smart enough not to pick the same fight twice in a row." Unless, of course, they had managed to win the fight the first time.
The brothers each shook Lissa's hand happily, Elliot making sure to switch hands so that his walking stick wouldn't get in the way. However, Lissa's question certainly got their attentions. Immediately Elliot moved to take out his Digivice, looking over its different design compared to the one that Lissa surely had. He opened his mouth, prepared to give a proper explanation, only for Isaac to activate his while it was still in his pocket. A cocoon of energy surrounded him, and soon the spot where Isaac was standing was now occupied by an Impmon. "Fooled you! I was his partner all along!" Isaac said, a smirk forming on his face.
Elliot let out a huff. "Isaac, come on, don't prank people," he protested, somewhat exasperated. "Anyway, we don't really have partners. We're spirit users," he added, not really explaining the latter part. After all, if she was a hero of justice, she had to have been here for a long time!

Lissa blinked in confusion. Never, in the admittedly short time she had been in the digital world had she seen a digivolution as strange as this one. Isaac’s body was engulfed in a cocoon of energy, completely shielding him from view. When the light subsided, his human body had been transformed or perhaps replaced by the body of a digimon, instead.
This new digimon was rather short, bright purple with a gremlin-like appearance. It stepped forward and smirked at Lissa before saying that he was the partner all along. This seemed improbable and yet – this world was filled with the most implausible of events. Elliot huffed loudly and started to berate the newly formed digimon on pranking people. Lissa merely smiled and looked on interestedly. “Got to be honest with you, never heard of a human transforming into a digimon before. That’s so cool!” Her eyes lit up just like Elliot’s had done shortly after she had defeated the Gorillamon and called herself a hero. “Spirit user, huh,” she said wistfully; looking down to her partner, VeeVee. “I still think I’d rather have a partner, like VeeVee.”
“We’ve only been here a few weeks… Well, I think so. It’s difficult to keep up with the days here. But we’ve become really good friends and VeeVee is someone I can always rely on.” At these words, VeeVee looked away towards the cliff’s edge as his cheeks began to glow with a crimson tint. “Already managed to get ourselves in and out of trouble, though. Like the digimon at that tavern when we too– ” Lissa cut herself short, suddenly remembering.
Completely forgetting they had company, Lissa turned to VeeVee and said, “Oh man. Our window of opportunity is going to run out. If we don’t find them soon, they might have abandoned it or left and after all that work to find the key.” Shimmering, in her palm of her hand sat a small, black device almost like a USB stick from the Human World.

Elliot smiled bashfully at what Lissa thought of spirit transformations. "Thanks! And that's just the smallest kind of thing we can turn into," he said, already making the mental note to keep any forms above Orochimon secret. Gargoylemon just wasn't safe for new audiences. Or old audiences. In fact, Elliot just hated that form in general. "I know how you feel when it comes to partners, though. I get the feeling that if my brother wasn't here too, I'd be really lonely. So he's not really wrong when he pulls that prank. We've always tackled this place together, after all."
Had always already been a whole year? It was always so shocking remembering that. That was especially the case when hearing about other tamers starting on their journeys, like Lissa. She had only started a few weeks ago, apparently, and yet she already seemed to be in quite the comfortable position. To a degree it was reassuring seeing someone sure of themselves here in the Digital World, rather than the usual mix of confusion and fear that often tended to arise.
That said, she also seemed a lot busier than the bros did on their first days. Already there was some manner of trouble she was trying to investigate, and a black USB drive in her hand seemed to be key to that. Isaac peered at it, curiously. "Looking for someone, eh? If you need a little backup, we could help," he suggested, grinning a bit. Then he squeezed his eyes shut and focused, a cocoon wreathed in shadowy flame surrounding him. By the time it splintered, he had shifted from a small Impmon to the much larger Devidramon. It seemed his flair for the dramatic was almost impossible to shake.
"Or maybe a lot of backup!"

As she considered his offer, Isaac closed his eyes and quite suddenly his entire body transformed again – this time wrapped in a cocoon of purple fire. When he emerged he was much larger and demonic in appearance like a black-winged gargoyle. The beast had thin red claws which scraped along the ground as well as four similarly colored crimson eyes which Lissa couldn’t help but feel looked like blood. Although she had her doubts about leading her new friends into possible danger, it seemed as if they could defend themselves. “Okay, okay. You can come with us.”
“Well...” Lissa said, hesitating slightly before continuing with what she was going to say. “I guess since you’re coming with us and all. I can let you in on the mission, right” As she said it, she threw the USB stick up into the air and effortlessly caught it again. As the four of them started to continue to walk up the mountain, Lissa continued her story.
“Right, so. I’m on the hunt for this mean ol’ dark guild of Digimon called Mad Regulus. The first time I met one of them, they were stealing from a posh manor house owned by a big chicken. I failed to catch them then and they got away with...something. I never found out what since I was promptly ejected from the house right after.” VeeVee nodded and added, “Yup yup, I still got the boot marks to prove it.”
“All I know is that it was valuable enough that it was worth crashing the party, which means it can’t be a good thing to let them have it. I’m a hero, I’ve got to take down anyone who defies justice.” As she said it, a fire seemed to burn in Lissa’s eyes which proved how much she wanted and needed to do this. While she had no idea what she needed to take back, she knew that it was important that she did so, not only for the owner of the manor but also for honor and justice.

"I mean, we'd be pretty bad at helping if we didn't know what we were doing, right?" Elliot pointed out, preparing to sit back and hear about Lissa's mission. He smiled slightly as she tossed the USB drive in the air. With someone as confident as her, this mission was gonna be a breeze! As for Isaac? Well, when you're a giant powerful dragon, you tended not to sweat the small worries like "dangerous missions" or "people trying to kill you." It was a very healthy mindset!
Of course, even dragons could feel surprise, and the Digimon that Lissa described certainly brought that on. It turned out Devidramon looked way less intimidating when dumbstruck, Isaac repeating "A giant . . . chicken?" as he listened to Lissa.
"Not the weirdest Digimon we've heard of. Remember the Undercity?" Elliot asked. A whole adventure full of slime and slime possessing plush dolls raised the bar high on strange, awkward looking Digimon concepts in Elliot's book. A giant chicken seemed downright normal compared to Monzaemon or Raremon!
"Still, Mad Regulus, huh? Haven't heard about them, but they don't sound too pleasant," Isaac added. Maybe if he knew his astronomy, he'd have more clues as to what kind of Digimon Lissa meant. Instead, all he knew was that they sounded really fancy. "You see anything from them, or did they just leave their calling card at the chicken manor?"
"If they're robbing people, we gotta put a stop to them, Elliot agreed. "How would you like us to help? If you've already got a plan in mind, I'd be happy to listen."
