A literal walk in the park (Valentines: John Davis & Wynn D)

John DavisValentines was a very rare time of year for some. Wynn habitually spoiled herself so this day and the treats she often found herself swimming by merit of her sex meant little to her, beyond sampling a person's taste in chocolate, gifts, or plushes. Despite her good looks she often spent it alone or among friends and co-workers due to the nature of her job but the thought of spending a valentines day truly alone made her very anxious, she was very concerned with her appearance and as such the idea of spending a valentines day alone didn't sit well with her. Enter dating apps. She had rarely cared for them, though she had always had a couple on her phone at any given time she just ignored the notifications mostly. It was a confidence booster to know she had admirers she'd never met, nor intended on meeting. But that was then, when she had friends and colleagues to spend the day with. Now she was alone, in a foreign country no less. So to avoid the embarassing event of spending valentines day alone, she responded to a suggested match for her. He wasn't terrible looking, he was in Japan, and he seemed like a nice guy. Wynn wasn't the dating type, least of all now that she had encountered the digital world and her intent on studying and exploring the place was far more interesting to her than any romantic relationship. No harm in a day out with some company though... Ill plan the whole thing in advance, it'll be perfect! she'd think to herself while preparing for her "date", sliding into a lovely, breezy white dress that opened up into a tear shaped lattice work around her stomach to expose her midriff, but closed back up nearing her waist as to not reveal the hem of her underwear, it hung off her shoulders and to circumvent its plunging neckline she opted to accessorize with her favorite necklace, a large dream catcher-like disk with a minimalistic floral design. It was her favorite brand and fairly pricey despite the simplicity, but she was a creature of luxury and she liked it. It was large enough to effectively veil the top of her cleavage and with a few extra accessories in the form of armbands to keep the dress from falling off her shoulders, a couple of anklets to let her legs feel less naked than they mostly were, and a lovely choker "just because" she felt reasonably attractive. In truth she may have been overly attractive for a first date, her long flowing dress with the deep neckline and navel window was a forward choice but Wynn was mostly blind to her desire to be desired and thusly blind to her more aggressively appealing choice if apparel. She arrived in the park roughly five minutes earlier than she had told her date to arrive. She had hoped to to familiarize herself with the park a bit and to confirm they had places to go after the date from there. Ok, so - A walk in the park to enjoy the flowers, get to know each other a bit, then to that frozen yogurt place up the block from here for lunch! Then we can go our separate ways... Or we could head back to the park with fro-yo in hand to people watch or we could go to that bookstore and pick up some books, or we could just loiter around! Yeah! Ok, yeah! That'll work! Wynn once again thought to herself as she waited for her date to arrive, hoping he was at least half as attractive and nice as his profile suggested, not wanting to be made the fool to get cat-fished on valentines day of all days. 629 words

Being single in a country where you were not native born had its particular hardships on the mind. This was indeed the case for John, who had moved to Japan over two years ago. But adjusting wasn't all bad, having forged friendships since the day of his arrival. One of the more important bonds was born when the human first hatched Casimeir, his Digimon partner that had stuck with him ever since.
Still, being single for so long had certain effects on John. The last serious relationship he had lasted over a year, which ironically ended at least a year ago. And for a while after, John was heartbroken. But he had his friends and Casimeir to thank for helping him pull through a better person from the overall experience. The passing time helped him realize that he and his last partner were, in reality, not all that compatible with each other. Admittedly, John had slight longings to find a romantic partner eventually. He was confident knowing that it could not possibly be as bad as the last relationship.
Against all the odds, on the day before Valentine's Day, John's cell phone received a push notification from one of the few dating applications he was a member of. The events that followed led to a few exchanged messages between himself and the girl named Wynn. Admittedly, this left John to be a tad bit flustered and nervous. What if she didn't like him? What if he screwed up at some point and failed to recover?
No, John thought. He had to get those hindering thoughts out of his head. He suggested to Wynn in one of his messages a casual day out at a park to get to know one another and hang out. The young man made it very clear to himself that there was no pressure. If things worked out, then great. If not, at least he tried. How bad could it be?
An hour before the agreed meeting time, John was just getting dressed after a shower. It was nothing too fancy, yet not too casual. Aside from black dress shoes and slate colored slacks, John was just finishing up with the final buttons on his steel blue dress shirt. The man kept a few buttons undone near the collar to give himself a casual flair. Next came taking care of his dental hygiene with some teeth brushing and mouthwash. Aside from body odor, bad breath spelled certain doom on a date. Last but not least came the deodorant.
Casimeir walked by the bathroom door but halted as he peeked inside. The Agumon's eyes lit up when he saw John. "Hey, look at you! You're sure to have a nice date looking like that!"
The partnered Digimon's complement caught John off guard as it caused him to chuckle from embarrassment. "Heh, thanks, Cas." John checked the time on his phone, now. "I'd better head out now if I want to be early."
Cas's emerald gaze took on a look of slight worry. "Are you sure you want me to come along? I don't want to accidentally ruin your date. This girl might not know what Digimon are."
John mulled it over, plopping down onto the bed. He was deep in thought. The man's eyes met his partner's with a gentle smile. "Of course, Cas. I don't want to leave you cooped up in here. Besides! You can just stay disguised as a dog, remember?"
The Agumon made a sagely hum, closing his eyelids while he crossed his arms. "True. I can just stay nearby and keep an eye on you guys in case something happens." His smile widened now that he had more confidence from John's answer. "Okay. Let's go."
As the duo made their way to the park, they stopped by a flower stand from which the man procured a single red rose. He did consider buying chocolates, but he remembered that he should not overwhelm his date if the day were to go smoothly. Sure, John was nervous, and understandably so. At least with Casimeir here with him, he'd have an extra boost of confidence.
The pair finally arrived while Casimeir kept pace with his human companion disguised as a Shikoku dog. John fished his phone out of his pocket to check the time. "Okay...We're about a minute early. Good." The human fiddled with the rose's stem a bit as he and Caismeir scanned the park to see if they could locate Wynn. And then John spotted her.
"Woah." All that John managed to muster was a whisper. A soft hue of red danced across his cheeks the moment he laid eyes on her. He felt severely underdressed and outclassed in comparison to his date. She knew this was a casual day, didn't she? Did Wynn dress so well all so she could impress him? Because if she was, it was working.
John gulped quietly. He was doing his best to keep his heart rate down to normal levels. But that might not get to happen for some time now. Casimeir had to nudge his partner's leg in order to snap him out of his stupor. And now that John managed to gather his wits about him, he approached Wynn with a friendly smile. "Hi there. Wynn, right? I'm John. It's good to meet you!" John would then offer the single red rose to his date-to-be. "Here. I hope you like roses."

The park was far from empty so John's footsteps weren't nearly enough to announce his presence. Wynn had been smelling one of the flowers, not entirely sure what it was but the beautiful blue petals caught her eye, sneezing and stumbling just a bit in surprise when John called out to her. Fuckin heels! she angrily thought to herself as a faint blush formed around her cheeks while she firmly planted her feet into the ground, the pointed heel of the shoe scraping against the pavement but it spared Wynn from a tumble. She giggled a little, mostly insincerely trying to hide her embarrassment as she got back to standing, holding up a finger at John to stop him from potentially rushing in to help her fight gravity. Once firmly stood upright Wynn would pivot on her heel to face her date. He was a bit red in the face, not unlike Wynn now. He offered her a rose which she sheepishly took, smelled, and broke most of the stem off of "How embarassing would it be for you if I werent Wynn? If I were just some stranger you spooked?" shed say with a much more sincere, confident laugh while breaking off the thorns so that she could comfortably slide her gift along her ear and into her hair, making an accessory of the gift, largely because she didn't want to carry such a thing. A rose? A bit over priced and super impractical, this thing is gonna die in a week even with water and sunlight... But its a safe and traditional choice. Then again, I didn't ask for anything so I oughta be greatful... Still! What's with showing up early!? God, I hate surprises! Wynn pondered the gift and the first impression to herself, gently making sure it would stay where it was, grinning slyly toward John and twirling around in her dress to let the ivory fabric spin along with her blueish-green locks, showing off her barely altered look.
"I am Wynn though, and I happen to love cute accessories! This'll add some flavor to my ensembles for at least a week, thanks! Still... I feel bad though-" Wynn would say once the rose was affixed to its spot, laying a hand on her hip with a slightly defeated sigh "I didn't get you anything. I owe you a delightfully cheesy gift!" she'd say with a matter-of-fact tone before catch view of the dog that was idly following her date.
Did he... Bring his dog? Wynn would ponder before bending her legs at the knees to squat a bit, smiling up at her date and then to the dog. "Is this your dog? Or did you just make a friend on your way here?" the mercenary would playfully remark while snapping her fingers, whistling, beckoning the dog over. Wynn never was one for pets beyond fish, but she did like dogs."Here pooch~ I don't bite, I promise-" shed say to the dog then look back up at John "So! I figured we could take a walk around the park, then head up the block for some frozen yogurt? There's also a decent noodle place around there if you're more into that idea? Whatever you're in the mood for, worse comes to worse we could like... Order delivery and pick it up roadside? Its not as weird as it sounds, trust me." she'd say, gesticulating with her hands a bit while fishing into her pocketbook for something a dog might like. Do dogs do candy? Probably not, I know they don't do chocolate... Gramcrackers? God, if I knew he had a dog I woulda picked up fuckin treats!

The start of the date wasn't entirely unfolding how John imagined it would. That was to be expected when it came to planning out specific life events; you never knew what life was going to throw at you. John helplessly watched Wynn lose her balance from the sneeze and her startlement from his arrival. He moved to help her, but he was met with a single finger in protest. So John quietly waited for her to recompose herself. Then, Wynn spoke; asking how John would feel if this weren't the girl he was hoping to meet. To which, he answered with a confident smile. "Well, it's a good thing you match your profile picture," he commented with his blush already fading. "And I don't think it would be possible to mistake someone as stunning as you for another." While John was full of confidence and assuredness that this date was bound to go well, he couldn't help but wonder just how smoothly that romantic comment would land. Casimeir, meanwhile, was internally cheering his human partner on from the sidelines. The smile would remain at the time that Wynn took the rose from his hand. After which she spun oh so beautifully. If John didn't know better, he would believe that Wynn was attempting to put a spell on him. But would he complain? When Wynn suggested that she should get John a gift in return for the rose, he waved a dismissive hand. "Don't worry about it, Wynn. You don't have to give me anything in return. Your company is more than enough, honest." But then a word rang in his mind like a bell tower. Cheesy. Was he failing miserably at the date already? There it was again, that self-doubt that was a product of his last relationship. John quickly pushed it out of his mind. If worst came to worst, and the date didn't hit off, he'd get to spend a beautiful day outside. Still. He didn't figure that a rose would be cheesy. If anything, it was a cornerstone of romantic gestures. But he remembered that not all people thought the same. At least the beginning of the date wasn't a disaster. Before John could respond, his date became immersed in his disguised Agumon. And then she called to Casimeir, which in turn caused him to tilt his head in response. 'Oh,' he thought, 'right! I'm disguised as a dog! I'd better act like one if I don't want to mess this up for John!' Making a swift recovery, the Shikoku panted in a friendly manner while making sure to wag his tail while he approached Wynn, where he would sniff her hand. He wanted to be sure he appeared to be as friendly as possible. John watched Casimeir, somewhat stunned at how well he was putting on this performance. All of that practice paid off after all. "That's right," he replied to Wynn, "he's been my companion ever since I moved here from the States. His name is Casimeir. Sorry that you weren't expecting him to come along, but I figured he could use a nice day out." Then her suggestions met his ears. What would be a good set of activities for the date? "A walk through the park sounds lovely," he replied. "As for afterward, how about we head to the noodle shop and then get some frozen yogurt for dessert? And no, your delivery idea isn't as weird as it sounds. You can never go wrong with a good slice of pizza. Though pizza tends not to be as good as it is back in Brooklyn."'Alright,' thought John, keeping a soft simper about him now that the date was truly underway. 'Just remain positive. You had a bit of a rocky start, but it's not a disaster. There have been worse first impressions. She seems nice enough at, at least.' Still. Despite John's attempt to quell any self-doubt which surrounded his psyche like a looming shadow, it was hard to immediately think about his last relationship and how horribly it ended for him. But he had to remember. This was a fresh start. And the memories of the past should not haunt him. But Lady Fate was at times a cruel mistress. A particular ringtone reached the man's ears. A sound that immediately wiped the smile from his face to be replaced by a look that had a mixture of disappointment and sadness. John's body froze. Half of his mind screamed at him to not answer the call, while the other shouted that he had a duty to uphold. In truth, John felt like this call was a godsend to save him from a rocky start to a first date. It didn't protect him from feeling horrible. John looked deep into Wynn's eyes begging for empathy through his facial conformities. "I'm so sorry," he apologized. The hopes of a good date were tumbling around him like rainfall. "I have to take this." The man had to force himself to reach into his pocket to grab his D-Terminal. Just as he thought, the face of Sophie was on the screen. John's heart pounded harder with the reality staring straight through him. Caismeir's furry ears perked, and he whined, knowing precisely what was going on. The man looked at Wynn again. "I..." he couldn't find the words. The defeat was now displaying itself in John's features. "Wynn, I'm sorry. But we'll have to postpone the date for another time." He paused, half waiting for a reaction, and half wanting to just get this embarrassing moment over with. But whatever her answer would be, he'd just walk off in the direction in which he was initially going to tread. He just prayed that he would have a second chance. And despite every fiber of his being begging him to look back at the woman he had just brushed off seconds ago, he refused. His heart was breaking enough as it was. Exhuming a heavy sigh, John finally answered the call on his D-terminal while his pace quickened with a sense of purpose with Casimeir trailing behind his human partner. The poor thing looked just as sad. "Go ahead, Sophie."The night sky was in clear view by the time that John and his Agumon partner had taken care of business. The door to John's quarters slid open to give entry to a depressed and tired man that made his way straight to the bed to lay down with his face buried in the pillows. Casimeir followed. The Agumon was incredibly worried about him. "John, it's okay," he assured. The dinosaur walked up next to John to put a confiding hand on the man's shoulder. "She's not going to hate you for being called in by work. She seemed understanding."John slowly sat himself up and quickly wiped away any of the tears that were staining his cheeks. "I know, Cas. I know. I'm just upset right now. I was looking forward to a nice day out. Still...My job as an AEGIS agent comes first. I just wish t didn't have to happen today of all days."Casimeir's eyes softened. "Well, if she holds it against you, then maybe you're better off. I wish I knew what to say to make you feel better. How about I cook something up for you to cheer you up?"John remained silent for a time while he thought about Caismeir's offer. He was heavily leaning toward accepting. "Sure."
Sadly I am bringing this thread to an end. I'm sorry, Wynn, but I haven't heard from you in a while and I can't keep waiting. Posts for John, please. As I haven't had contact with Wynn I am not aware of what she wants. WC: 3,038
