Forward after the Fall [Carlos]

Admittedly, neither Carlos nor Dio were expecting such a…straight answer. Perhaps they had been conditioned to just accept the shrugs and theories others proposed about everything Digimon related, so to have someone be so direct and to the point was a rare occurrence. That and the answer itself was…rather unexpected.
So to say the doctor’s words took a moment to set in would be an understatement. In fact, the two of them stood in a completely stumped silence for a good ten seconds or so, before they both opened their mouths again, one simple word being muttered by Carlos and Dio.
“What.” "What."
As soon as that revelation hit the energy around the imp’s arm seemed to sputter and die out, as his eyes widened in sheer surprise and disbelief. His whole life he had never questioned why the title of Dark Lord stuck with him. It had been around for so long that he just accepted it as a part of himself without asking questions. So to learn that it was probably linked all the way back to such higher powers in the Dark Area was just mesmerizing.
“Dude…dude!” Carlos barely muttered out, still as shocked as his partner. “Those Demon Lords? The Demon Lords?” He repeated, flabbergasted. He had learnt enough about the digital world to know a thing or two about these so called Seven Demon Lords.
Unbelievable! All the Impmon’s rants, boasts and threats about the power of the Dark Lord weren’t just inventions? It was all real? This was just too much info to take in all at once. So much so in fact that not even Dio himself seemed to fully believe it.
“But…that doesn’t make any sense.” He said, shaking his head as if to clear his thoughts, looking at the cat with confusion. “If…if that’s the case then why can’t I remember anything? Even if it was on a past life, I doubt I’d forget something as big as this.”
Could his memory be that faulty that he had completely forgotten about his origin? As he paced back and forth, pondering all of this, Carlos couldn’t help but wonder some things of his own too. In particular, there was another big elephant in the room that couldn’t be ignored for long: What did the doctor mean with “your relation to it was the same as mine”?
“Is there…anything you’d like to share with us, Doctor?” Carlos asked, somewhat cautiously, rising an eyebrow. What was Mikemon’s relation with the Demon Lords, anyway?

Honestly, Dr. Mikemon should have expected this sort of response. Even the Impmon seemed confused as to the origin of his title - not a Dark Lord, but a proper Demon Lord? The feline waited for the two to catch up, left stunned by the explanation...
... And finally, Carlos got something out. Blinking in response, the doctor gave a nod. "Yes, those Demon Lords." It was hard to tell if Carlos was simply surprised, or taken aback by the whole ordeal. Heck, even Dio seemed a bit uncertain of it, questioning his title for the first time, despite now having proof it was the real one. Why couldn't he remember?
"Demon Lords usually spend the majority of their time in their ascended forms. Its very likely that, as a Rookie or Champion level Digimon, you'd have very few memories of the feats you performed in your higher forms. After all, what you inherited was their data. In time, the memories may become apparent - or perhaps they simply sealed them off intentionally so as to protect their legacy."
These were all possible, and each held a heavy weight - but that seemed to be pushed to the side, with Carlos' pointed question. The Mikemon paused, planting his forehead against his palm. "... Fine, I trust you. If only because Dio's already confided that newfound secret to me, I guess I should make it fair." He nodded, turning his full attention to Carlos - before resting a paw against his own chest. "I am Doctor Mikemon, the Thirty-Sixth Incarnation of Greed. I held my Title 452 years ago in our time, and relinquished it after a mere 50 years."
Part of that probably went over his head, but he pressed on: "To protect myself and those closest to me, I entered the medical field to alter my form to that of my Champion level. As a result, I can now only emit the aura of a Demon Lord if I choose to focus and think on it."
He let that hang in the air for a moment. "But that's who I was, to be clear. Its not a part of my life I dwell on more than I have to."

The Doctor’s logic was sound, after all what reason could a Demon Lord have to relinquish his higher form? Well…besides Mikemon’s own reasons of course. Still, having such a huge milestone be a part of his past was a bit overwhelming, even for the egocentric imp to take in. Many a time before he had dreamt of actually being part of the Royalty, to have his title validated, and people respecting him for it.
But now that he knew about this? He was simply at a complete loss. What was he supposed to do with this knowledge? Keep his title? Try to reclaim his legacy? Ignore it all together? And more importantly, why did he forget? Was it some sort of side effect of rehatching…or was it intentional?
His head practically spun with all these questions, so he chose to focus on what Mikemon had to say. The duo couldn’t help but be taken aback by this new revelation, as the good Doctor revealed himself to be none other than a Barbamon, the Demon Lord of Greed. Well, he certainly didn’t look the part anymore.
Well, that certainly answered some questions, but brought up more. Why would he abandon his position as a Demon Lord? Did it have to do with the reason he transformed himself into a Mikemon? And why a Mikemon of all things?
But Carlos knew this was probably a touchy subject, and they had just found out about it. Better to keep quiet and not press the cat for more answers. They had enough of a problem on their hands already.
“I see.” Carlos nodded slowly, taking in the answer. Another thought did appear in his mind however, in the form of another question that was better taken out of the way early. “Does anyone else know about this? Like Haru?”
“Don’t worry, your secret is safe with us.” Surprisingly, it was Dio of all people that said this, looking at the Doctor with a serious expression, prompting Carlos to shoot the imp a surprised, if slightly worried look.
“But I mean, should we really keep this as a secret? This is kind of huge.” It wasn’t so much that Carlos wanted to reveal such a thing to the world, or even just the club, it was just that he was afraid of keeping it a secret and having someone else find out. Wasn’t that the usual super hero dilemma of secret identities?
“Carlos…you do know the reputation the Demon Lords have, right?” The imp asked, turning to the man, a completely dead serious expression on his face. He looked…worried, almost afraid. “Not even the worst in the Dark Area would dare to get in their way.”
“But I thought you wanted others to fear and respect you.”
“I…did, I still do. But…this is different. If they find out and they think anything like the rest of the Digital World….I don’t know how they would react.” Dio said, looking down. Was he afraid of being rejected, or being hunted down? Maybe it was both, but he clearly didn’t want to risk either of those happening.
Carlos let out a sigh, seemingly at a lost for words. This changed so many things. The best he could do was look back at Dr. Mikemon again. He understood the sentiment of both digimon completely, and while he certainly couldn’t just ignore such a thing, he could do no less than support his partner in any way possible. Even if it meant keeping this a secret.
“We’ll keep quiet, but you have to stay quiet about this as well.”

Yeah, silence was pretty much expected, at least for a few moments. Mikemon had given the pair a lot to process at once - both about who Dio was, and who the doctor was as well. It was hard to see exactly what gears were clicking inside of their heads...
... But ultimately, Carlos played it rather safe. Who else knew? "The Stingmon you saw at the front desk knows, as well as a Renamon named 'K'. I plan to tell Haru and Tawna eventually - but I'm going to be honest, no-one else in the club needs to know about this." Thankfully, Dio agreed - and even challenged Carlos' own point. There were good reasons to keep this whole thing under wraps.
"If our existence becomes commonly known," the cat added to Dio's point, "The Empyrean Skies would never leave us alone again. There have even been cases where a Shakamon's been deployed to act as judge, jury, and executioner on the spot - um, you can look at your Digivice for what that looks like."
Aside from that? Well, Carlos agreed to keep the fact quiet, Mikemon returning a nod back to him. "Naturally. Though, if you prefer it now," Dr. Mikemon gave a chuckle, "I think I can call you Dark Lord. You know. At least twenty percent of the time."
He gave a small laugh, at that! "C'mon. Ya gotta admit, using an honorific with an equal just seems weird."

Indeed, being a fugitive for the remainder of his life didn’t exactly sound like a fun prospect, to put it mildly. Especially if they would be hunted by the Empyrean Skies, if their last visit to Luminas had been of any indication, they would be taking no prisoners if they decided to hunt them down.
Still, out of sheer morbid curiosity the man followed the cat’s suggestion, looking up said digimon through his own device’s database. Needless to say, the available information left him momentarily speechless, even making him widen his eyes a bit, though he would soon nod once in the cat’s direction. “…yeah ok, point made, guess we officially have a secret between our hands now. Sweet.” He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Was this something they would be able to share someday? Was it a secret they would have to take to their graves? Granted, if Mikemon had been able to share such secretive information with both K and a secretary of all people maybe they could too.
Dio meanwhile seemed to slowly but surely be calming down from the initial shock of the news, instead of walking back and forth he was now simply sitting on the ground with a mildly vacant stare. Eh, it was still an improvement from his earlier almost panic moment. Mikemon was quick to help in lightening the mood, at least.
“Heh, alright, fair enough I suppose. But I hope you don’t mind me calling you Doctor the rest of the time. Just “Mikemon” on its own sounds a bit weird.” Dio would say, giving a small chuckle of his own too, seemingly not minding the Doctor's casual tone anymore. Hey, he said it himself, they were now "equals" after all.
“So now what? Anyone got other deep dark secrets we have to share?” Carlos quickly chimed in, half sarcastically, half unsure where to go from here.

Carlos was quick to understand that Mikemon, of all people, wouldn't be the one to spill the beans over all this. Yes: Shakamon was indeed a terrifying figure, fully worthy of the heavy sigh that Carlos gave. At that, though, Mikemon still managed a smirk: "Think of it more as 'watching out for each-other.' Its not an easy secret to share, but its better to have some allies in this then none at all."
Still, what else could he be hiding? On at least his end, Mikemon was certainly leaving at least a few things off the table, and he certainly didn't seem inclined to say anything more personal than he already had. What was already said was enough to at least get on some level of understanding with the Impmon, even if the doctor fully intended to still poke a bit of fun at the imp. "Hey, whatever feels right. It still sounds better than 'Greed', 'Demon Lord', or even 'Mikey', of all things." Wait, when did that last one come up?
Thankfully, Carlos interjected fast enough. Shooting a quick glance in his direction, Mikemon simply gave a shrug: "Hey, I'm sure we all got some skeleton we still wanna keep closed up - it was good for Dio to figure that much out, but no need for us to become open books." Well, at least the cat admitted there was more to it - and that it wasn't really important for the moment. Honestly, the topic should turn back to where it started!
"For now, I just gotta admit it's been good to just have you two around. If you don't mind, we should try and do this 'volunteer' work more often - just don't expect a huge revelation every time."
