Forward after the Fall [Carlos]

Well, the Digital Field Club was going to need to fill out its encyclopedia at some point. Why not get a good lead going in Mikemon's own place of work?
The 'trick', as it was, was to simply use the Super Scanner in Dr. Mikemon's own line of work. Every so often on the less busy days of the week, the Mikemon would close up shop and come to the beach, to hold a little open clinic. Even for Digimon, it was easy for the tourists to forget themselves out here: whether they be burnt, dehydrated, or just plain nauseous from the waves, the cat would quickly assess their condition and offer them a place to lie down. On a very rare occasion, he'd manage to catch an interesting case - fortunately, today was not one of those days.
No, today he managed to rope Carlos and the Impmon over to help out, to get a scan of whatever patient would allow it. Sure, it went a bit against the exploration aspect of the Field Club, but one couldn't argue with the results: from Devimon to Togemon, the range in such a travel spot was quite varied, and from the detail on the scans, the cat could occasionally point out an anomaly! At this point, both Carlos and the Doctor would have been at it for a few hours, and with the evening growing near, it was about time to pack up shop. Rolling up his sign, the cat would give a nod over to the tamer:
"Hey, thanks again for finding the time to come out here," the Mikemon smiled, nodding briefly as their last sit-in - a Kabuterimon - started to buzz back towards the city. "I see all these meet-ups through the chat, and I'm usually stuck out here doing an operation or something. And whenever I am available, its usually just for something around here."
Sheesh - the cat gave a sigh, brushing the back of his hand against his muzzle. "You two holding up alright? Didn't expect that little rush near the end..."

After the rather emotionally taxing day that had been Carlos and Dio’s visit to Haru while she was on the hospital, the duo felt in dire need to find something else to get their minds off that rather depressing subject. Luckily for them, as it turned out Dr. Mikemon had just the solution for that, as he invited the two club members over for a day of work at his small clinic next to Whitewater’s beach, with the purpose of helping him out getting some scans out of the patients for the Club’s benefit.
As the evening began covering the city, and last patient for the day left the clinic, Carlos couldn’t help but let out a relieved sigh, overall satisfied with their work today.
“No problem Doc. Not like I had any plans for today, I’m glad to have something to do.” The man replied with a smile, shrugging. “And if I also get to help out the club that’s always a bonus.”
“Easy to have free time for meet-ups when you don’t have a proper job, Carlos.” Dio snidely commented, lazily slouching on a chair. While he had raised no objections about coming to help out (other than he’d much rather spend that time sunbathing on the beach), he hadn’t exactly gone out of his way to be too helpful during the work day, but at the very least he hadn't been a bother either.
Carlos rolled his eyes a bit, but otherwise chose to ignore him as he began packing up the clinic’s various tools and equipment back into their place.
“Yeah, we’re fine! This was peanuts compared to working at retail, trust me.” He said reassuringly with a chuckle, before turning to face the cat. “I’m a bit surprised though, considering even the weakest of digimon can do things like summon lighting, shrug off stab wounds and other such nonsense, I honestly didn’t expect to see so many sunburns or cases of dehydration. “

Well, at least the doctor had one helpful assistant for the day - though really, even that was more than he had on a normal basis. Continuing to pack up the clinic, the Mikemon simply rolled his eyes at Dio's comment. "Yeah, just make sure to keep in the shadow of that umbrella. Would just hate to see you bake under all that dark purple there, Dio."
Getting that one little shot in, and once more keeping the 'Dark Lord' title out of the name, the Mikemon clicked another bag shut. "Yeah, I can't see myself spending every day moving boxes or whatnot. Doing this is fine for a while, but I don't think I could stay in one of those 'the customer thinks they're always right' places." He gave his own chuckle at that, but the cat's ear twitched at the next point.
Carlos was surprised? "Guess that might seem a little strange, but just because we can breathe fire and whatnot doesn't mean we're invincible." Giving a small laugh, the cat explained: "Especially around the city, you'll find that not a lot of us are fighters. Its also easy for some to lose track of what to do when they're in an environment they're not familiar with."
"Granted," the cat continued, "the damage it does to us in long-term's probably less than what it would be to a human... but I'm rambling." Right, these two had been here all day to help out! "While you're here, any place you wanted to check out? At the very least I figure I could grab us something to eat, pick-up on the way back to the office or something." Heck, had these three ever really just had a chance to talk? Until now, Mikemon's just been 'another cat in the Field Club'!

“Tch.” The imp huffed, annoyed at Mikemon’s little comment, shooting a small glare in his direction. Out of all the club members, he was probably the one that (at least in his own slightly warped view of the world) took him the least seriously. Yet the thing that irked him the most was how deliberately the doctor avoided using Dio’s “proper” title, that cat clearly knew what grinded his gears the most. Still, he did his best to not let it show, both in an attempt at that whole “being the better mon” thing Carlos had been telling him about, and to avoid giving the doctor the satisfaction of seeing him annoyed. “The Dark Lord appreciates your concern, Mikemon, but I’d advise you to do the same, wouldn’t want that precious brain of yours to burn out under the sun either.” He remarked, his sarcastic tone barely masking his utter annoyance as he got up from the chair, making his way next to the human as he closed the last box.
Carlos, willfully oblivious to this whole petty “arguing”, simply turned to the doctor again. “Yeah, that sort of stuff takes a very specific mindset, and a lot of patience. Both things I sorely lack.” He said with a self mocking grin in his face, as he shrugged. “But hey, if it pays the bills...”
The man with the dyed hair nodded at Dr Mikemon’s following explanation, which was as simple as it was logical. “I suppose that makes sense, not everyone has to be a natural born fighting machine.” He mused, scratching his chin. Granted, that explanation didn’t really made the fact they had treated something that was basically a giant devil for a small case of sunburn on his back any less bizarre. But after the things he had witnessed on his relatively short stay on the Digital World, he was starting to get used to the madness by now. Regardless, he as well as Dio perked up considerably once the doctor spoke again. Specially at the mention of food.
“Actually, I don’t really know my way around Whitewater too much, last time I was here on my own I spent most of the day on the beach being lazy.” And for that matter, he couldn’t really rely on Dio to show him around either, as they had spent those days apart while Dio was busy training with K to improve himself. Well, if the Doctor was offering, he wasn’t going to refuse his generosity! Plus that wait he could get to know yet another club member a bit more personally. “But yeah, something to eat would be nice. Any good place you can recommend? I’m not picky.”

There was a reason that Mikemon chose not to use Dio's preferred title, but from the doctor's perspective, the Impmon had it quite easy. He'd been allowed to sit around all day - sunbathing, in every way except the name - only taking the occasional 'break' to grab something from the cooler. Perhaps this was why the Impmon's reaction was far more muted than it could have been, deciding to respond to sass with sass - which was something the doctor could honestly respect. He simply gave a shrug, chuckling with a smirk as he continued to pack up. "Right, right, we won't be in the sun too much longer."
That said, it didn't take them that long to start to make their way back into the city, Carlos seeming to still be in well-enough spirits despite a long day at the beach. "Sheesh, if it were a bit earlier I'd show you were to go so you aren't crowded out. And I could throw you a whole list of restaurants, but..." Considering the lot were disheveled and their ankles were coated in a fine layer of sand, the cat wisely decided to shy away from sit-down places. "Well, if you want to eat cheap and good, all you need to do is turn onto this block."
Yup - just as Mikemon turned the corner, Carlos and Dio would be greeted by a likely pleasant sight: foot carts on display, with both human and Digimon delicacies delight, both good to look at and cheap on the wallet! "You two grab somethin, and meet me on the other end so we can talk at the office. My treat, today." The feline handed a few bills to Carlos - nothing more than a couple hundred bits, but enough to get both him and the Impmon whatever they wanted from the line. "Oh, and what about..."
The cat stopped himself, shaking his head. "Never mind, that can wait 'til we get back!"

Both Carlos and Dio couldn’t help but feel their mouths watering as they turned around the street and saw the whole congregation of food carts littering the street, the many different aromas of various delicious dishes permeating the air. While the man was indeed pleasantly surprised by being guided to, what really took him by surprise was the doctor’s following (and rather generous) act, as he offered the man a couple bills to pay for the food.
“Aw, thanks doc!” The man thanked with a smile, sounding genuinely touched as he put the bills safely into his pocket. Honestly, he almost felt bad over accepting such a generous offer from the doctor, even if it could be considered payment for helping out that day. He’d have to make it up later to the cat somehow.
“Hmph, the invitation was unneeded…but still appreciated, I suppose.” The imp said whilst folding his arms, trying hard not to let his smile show. Try as he might, free food was always welcomed, and giving him free food was also a really good way to appeal to his nicer side.
"Alright, give us five minutes, we'll be right back!" Carlos said as he and his partner quickly made their way to the carts.
It took the two a bit longer than expected to finally make up their minds and pick something to eat, since there were too many options, all of them equally good. From almost perfect recreations of “traditional human cuisine” (as the sign said, though Carlos wasn’t sure how valid that statement could be when it came to burgers of all things), to a good number of foods native to the Digital World, mostly in the form of odd shaped fruits and/or vegetables. As much as the man would have loved to try out one of each, they had to choose smartly.
Around eight minutes later, the duo finally came out of the other side of the food court, each holding a different food, Carlos what seemed to be brochette filled with various foods, both human and digital in nature, while Dio carried not so much a bowl as a bucket of noodles that was just a bit taller than his head. Obviously, judging by his greedy smile, he wasn’t planning on sharing any of it.
But besides that, Carlos also carried a small bag on his other hand, which he then handed to the cat once they found him on the other side. “Here, it’s only fair to get you something too, we all worked hard today.” He said with a smile, before shotting a quick glance at Dio and then back to Mikemon “…well, two of us worked hard.”

"Eh, don't worry about it, you worked hard today." Mikemon gave his own smile back to Carlos. Indeed, to the cat, this was already a repayment for the work that Carlos had performed today. If the tamer took it as a favor he needed to return, well, who knows? This may very well end in a constant string of trinkets and favors shared between the two, without ever knowing quite where it started.
For now, though, he just gave a nod, and made his own way through the block. Unlike Carlos and Dio, who were likely in the midst of a small option overload, the cat already knew his preference for a quick bite here: a pressed chicken sandwich, with a slightly rich cheese drizzling out from the side of the toasted white bread. In relatively short order, the cat would settle himself in on a bench, already starting to chew through his sandwich as he waited for the other two to arrive.
It took a little over five minutes, but not enough to keep the cat waiting for long! Wrapping up the other half of that sandwich, Mikemon stood up from that bench, taking a brief look at the two's choices. Carlos had been slightly adventurous, whereas Dio... well, was unexpectedly Dio, but what could be helped about that? Blinking, the cat would smile and sigh as he took the bag from Carlos, chuckling at that shot towards Dio.
"... You're not an easy one to repay, are you? Thanks, of course!" Giving a laugh more than anything else, he would rest that bag over his elbow - and take a look inside, should Carlos insist, before heading back to the office.
No point souring the mood before a good meal, of course! Back at Mikemon's abode, the three would take residence in the break room in the back, likely sitting around the table as they had their makeshift meals. Carlos would likely have a good sense of his likes and dislikes from the delicacies he picked, the cat giving him a slight warning over that blue pepper ("It looks innocent, but its basically a ghost pepper!")
Eventually, as they started to wind down, the cat would finally ask that question he'd been dreading, for the longest time:
"Well... gonna be honest, I saw what happened on the chat. You two got a look at Haru, right? How does it look like she's holding up?"

After the duo made themselves comfortable at the Doctor’s place, it took them not much longer than a good 6 or 7 minutes to finish their food, mostly because Carlos took great care to take it slow and enjoy every diffirent flavor as it came, and Dio because…well, he had a lot of noodles to eat before he could finish. It was nothing that would stop the Dark Lord’s insatiable appetite, though.
All in all, it was a good, enjoyable dinner, barring the suspicious glares Carlos shot that mysterious blue pepper every so often, eventually deciding to leave it untouched. He liked spicy food just fine, but something about the words “ghost pepper” was a bit too off putting to be worth the risk. Last thing he wanted was to get intoxicated by a strong pepper…though admittedly he would at least receive medical attention immediately if that were to happen.
Nevertheless, as the partners slumped lazily on the chairs with their stomachs filled and satisfied (even though Dio’s bowl seemed to be bottomless), the Mikemon dropped a bomb in the form of a question that was, admittedly, a long time coming. The duo exchanged a glance at each other, their expression turning a bit grim. Yep, guess this was going to come up eventually. The man sighed sadly, placing the brochette back on the plate.
“I’ll be straight with you…I really don’t know.” He admitted, his usually calm and cheery demeanor faltering, sounding both rather tired…and worried.
“I-I mean she’s healing well enough, and the doctors said she was going to be fine in a couple days but..” he paused, pinching the bridge of his nose, shaking his head. Even if they had been there to help her out, to try to cheer her up…it almost felt like they had accomplished nothing. “…she just seemed so crushed. Hopeless. I never thought I’d see her be so miserable. I almost fear we might have made her even more confused.”
“You heard about Tawna and…the absorption, right?” Dio asked the doctor, not rising his gaze from his noodle plate. Try as he might to hide it, it was also a bit of a touchy subject for him, both out of concern for both Haru and Tawna (something he was too proud to admit), and because bringing that up invariably brought forth some morality related questions about if it was right to absorb other digimon, even in self defense. A discussion he rather not bring up with Carlos again, as they both seemed to share somewhat conflicted ideas regarding that whole unpleasant business.

Yes, there was a reason why Mikemon waited until everyone was happy, comfortable, and fed before asking that question. As expected, neither Dio nor Carlos seemed at all comfortable about what had happened - though, at the very least, neither of their expressions seemed grave.
Just understandably concerned. Mikemon's ear twitched at Carlos' answer, shortly giving a nod as he finished piecing through his explanation. "It's a difficult position to be in - heck, its difficult for me to say anything about it without it sounding like I'm making light of it. At the very least, its nice to hear that she's recovering. I'll... have to figure out how to talk to her about it when I'm back at her place."
Well, he could at least mull that over - but Dio quickly switched the subject to the Meicoomon. "Mm? Only that it was an Arkadimon - and honestly, that little bit worries me." He sighed, giving a shake of his head. "Ignoring everything else about the topic, there's something in our field called the 'Corrupt Three' - the three Digimon data types you should never try and load, regardless of the circumstance. The top of the list is the D-Reaper. Second is Arkadimon - the forms are so fluid that picking up that sort of data can make it very easy to Digivolve - or even De-Digivolve - by accident. And the third type..."
The cat sighed. "... Is the Meicoomon family itself. The high data density can make our 'lag response' permanently impaired - imagine waking up with a hangover, except that it never goes away." Mikemon's response was probably a bit off the mark than the Dark Lord expected, but heck, it brought up a new bit of concern to the table.
"Regardless, I guess all we can do is support the both of them. Judging an impossible choice is only going to put everyone at each-other's necks." The cat wasn't about to say his real opinion on the matter, either - though he clearly understood Dio's intent when asking the question. Heck, most of that last remark was directed towards the Impmon.

Making light of the it? Carlos barely quirked an eyebrow hearing this. Besides the somewhat witty comments and snappy humor, he always found the Doctor to be probably the more serious member of the Club. He had an M.D. degree for Pete’s sake!
“Ah, don’t worry about that Doc, doubt anyone would ever think you’re not taking this situation seriously.” The boy reassured him, smiling a bit. “Sides, knowing your profession you probably have better bedside manner than anyone else in the club, I’m sure she’ll appreciate the support regardless.”
The man went quiet however, as the cat began giving his take on the situation. Judging by his tone, it was….not exactly ideal. As per usual, this was the first time Carlos had ever heard the term Corrupt Three being used before. For someone that had spent little over two weeks and a half exploring the digital world, he was still very much unaware of a lot of things surrounding its nature, and Dio’s knowledge was not any more thorough than the man’s, probably because he had spent too long wandering the Dark Area to really learn much about the world beyond it.
“I see.” Was all the man could muster, his mind still trying to take in the new info. Hearing that Haru’s partner was considered anywhere comparable to something like Arkadimon, or worse, D-Reapers was troubling to say the least. Shaking his head, he seemingly managed to get his thoughts in enough order to ask something. “So, dumb question, but what would happen if One of these “Corrupt Three” were to absorb another?”
“Will…anything happen to Tawna?” Dio quickly added (much to Carlos’ surprise), his tone flat and forced, trying to (rather unsuccessfully) hide his concern. Try as he might to act tough, he couldn’t help but somewhat care for the feline after having gotten to know her and her tamer during the past club meetings, and seeing her questioning her actions so much had…affected him a bit.

"Heh." Nervously, the Mikemon gave a scratch behind his head: "I've been trying better as of late, but honestly its the nurses that have the bedside manner. Fair warning, a doctor that's hunting for answers is about the least sociable thing you'll run across. Tensions get a bit high."
He gave a sigh, letting that little truth slip off into the background. The topic soon shifted to Tawna's own condition, as well as the 'Corrupt Three'. Carlos was right to be concerned - especially with such an unknown threat - but as he asked that question, all the cat could do was shrug. "That could be anywhere from 'no ill effects' to 'about half as bad as it could have been'. Its hard to make something that's inherently corrupt more corrupt - if that makes sense?"
This also tied into Dio's question, the cat's ear twitching at his concern. "I'd say... nine-out-of-ten-times, no, but I'll be examining her data structure personally to ensure that there's no long term effects. Don't get me wrong, I'm concerned for both of them." And that said, the cat was ready to leave the topic on the table, at least for the moment.
... Easier said than done, of course - that was a pretty heavy topic to just lean into. Though there was something else the cat wanted to get at, and it was something he was sure would spin the topic quite quickly:
"So... 'Dio'. I'm sure you figured this question was coming at some point, but..." The cat's tone was curious: "How'd you end up with that title of yours?"

Even after hearing the Mikemon’s reply, Carlos wasn’t sure whether to feel reassured or not, truth be told. “Right…so what, would the two corruptions cancel each other out and not mix?” He asked, mostly as a way of making sure he was following his line of reasoning properly. At the very least, it seemed neither of them would be in any immediate danger, so that was at least somewhat comforting. The following answer certainly seemed good enough to comfort Dio though, as he seemed to relax a bit upon hearing it.
“That’s good to hear.” The imp nodded, sounding a bit less worried. He quickly let out an awkward cough, adding while folding his arms, “Not that I care of course. And you better make sure you do your job well, doctor.” Despite his attempts to save face and keep his “evil overlord” façade up, the damage was already done. Carlos didn’t made any comment on it though, other than smiling a bit. He was glad his partner could start to care for others besides himself, and wasn’t going to start teasing him about it.
Luckily for them, the Mikemon was quick to change the subject, asking Dio a question that had been brought up before, but was surprisingly not brought up more often: the reason behind the title of Dark Lord. The imp blinked at the cat for a moment, before putting his bowl of noodles aside.
“Yeah, that’s a funny story…” Dio said, scratching the back of his head. “…I don’t quite recall.”
“Ever since I came from the egg back on the Dark Area I’ve always had this weird feeling, almost as a hunch, or something tapping in the back of my head. Somehow, is as if I knew that I was meant to be something else…or perhaps I have been something else already. And with that feeling always came that title too, always in my mind, even from day one. So…yeah, not sure how I got it, just that it’s always been with me.” The Impmon shook his head, all too aware of how vague his answer had been. He really couldn't help it however, there was really barely in his memories that could add any insight into that title of its true meaning. His thoughtful expression quickly banished however, replaced by a sneer that reeked of smugness, as he declared. "Regardless of its origin, you'd do well in not forgetting it, Doctor."
Carlos rolled his eyes a bit, but seeing this as a perfect opportunity to double down and learn more about him (since the imp was a bit reserved when it came to talking about anything that happened before he met the human), soon chimed in, looking at the Doctor.
“So uh, got any educated guesses Doc? You’re more knowledgeable about this world than us, maybe you can help us find some answers.”

Honestly, Carlos' question was one asked a lot in the medical field - and as much as the cat wanted to say that was the case, that a corruption would block another, all the cat could offer was a shrug. "It depends. In some cases they slow each-other down, in some cases they progress independently, and in some cases they speed each-other up. In Tawna's case, I'd say she's more resistant to it than most."
But, without a proper diagnosis, all the Mikemon could do was speak in hypotheticals. The Impmon, quickly trying to pass off his expression as 'well that's good, I guess', simply earned an eye-roll from the cat. "Right, I'll make sure I don't take any shortcuts."
That said, the topic switched - and Dio was more open with the question than Mikemon honestly expected. Granted, the answer boiled down to 'It's nothing more than a feeling, but respect it anyway'... but surprisingly enough, Mikemon didn't tease him for that answer. "Interesting..." He mulled it over once in his head. "When you put it that way, it sounds credible enough... hm?"
The cat's ear twitched at Carlos' question, though the cat chose not to answer. Rather, the doctor took a deep breath. "Well, its not like 'Dark Lords' were told by someone else what they are. So, excuse me for just one second, there, Carlos."
Taking a step away from the chair, Mikemon gave a nod in Dio's direction: "Watch carefully." Slowly, the Mikemon extended out one paw, tensing it up to a fist, a dark aura surrounding it. This alone didn't mean anything - most Dark Area digimon could imitate a signal like that.
No, it was the color afterward that meant something: the purplish aura flared up, picking up a dark red tint, black specs flickering like a flame within. To those sensitive to it, one might feel their hair stand on edge.
"This feeling." The cat gave a nod. "If you can do that much, then that thought in the back of your head's not just a thought."

Carlos wasn’t exactly satisfied with the explanation offered by the cat, but he decided against asking further questions. This was a rare and complicated situation after all, having clear answers was probably too much to ask for the time being.
Both man and partner watched curiously as the Doctor took a step back and summoned a rather ominous looking red aura. Carlos couldn’t put his finger on it, but there was something slightly off about said energy. It almost seemed completely mismatched on someone like th gaze was focused on the black energy, pupils dilating for a split second as he watched, almost captivated. The feeling that emanated from within the flames was…oddly familiar to the imp. Even if he hadn’t exactly seen it before, he could at least tell he had felt it before.
Despite what the young man expected, Dio did not offer a witty remark, or a smug boast, or even take up the cat’s word as some sort of challenge. The Impmon simply sat there, quietly as if lost in thought. Just as it seemed he would say something however, Dio began e impmon also took a step away from the table and closer to the doctor’s position. Taking a deep breath, he followed Mikemon’s example, extending out his hand and clenching it into a fist. Closing his eyes as if to focus, Dio’s hand soon was surrounded by a purplish aura of energy, and for a moment it seemed it would stay that way.
Soon enough, however, the aura would suddenly increase in intensity and size, threatening to swallow the imp’s forearm as if it were a fire. This sudden spike in power startled Carlos slightly, though Dio looked calm, if only because his eyes were still shut…though that didn’t last long either. As he focused his power, the imp would catch a short glimpse, or rather a small feeling, as he tapped into…something that was deep within his very core…
Soon Dio would open his eyes, a slight red, ominous glint was faintly visible on them…a red very similar to the color the aura had now taken, and indeed very similar to the color of the Doctor’s own dark energy.
In fact, they were an exact match.
Strangely, what came out of Dio’s mouth wasn’t a smug “satisfied?” as Carlos expected it, rather a simple question that echoed the questions that were now running around the man’s own head.
“Well…what does this mean exactly?”

Carlos' temporary silence in the matter was appreicated: right now, the Doctor's focus was on the Impmon, and this very curious question at hand:
Could he back up his claim as a Dark Lord?
Rather than shy away from it, or even provide any sort of snark, the Impmon took the task very seriously, and was quick enough to try and imitate what the Mikemon had done. Maintaining the aura for Dio's reference, the cat watched on in interest and silence. Dio's eyes closed, his normal data signal radiating out with a bit of focus - before, well, it took off. Mikemon even took a step back at that intense flare of energy, one that even made his own fur stand on edge for a moment. Dio's focus was unrefined, yes.
But soon, the Mikemon's eyes widened, a small smirk pursing on the edge of his lips. Somehow, Dio had managed to conjure the same aura as the cat. "Sheesh, really?" Muttering that whisper out, he heard Dio's question, and gave a chuckle.
"Surprised?" Shaking out his own glove, he let the aura around his arm dissipate. "'Dark Lord' isn't an empty title to be carried or thrown around lightly. What it means is that one of your older selves - probably in the last three or so iterations - were, or were at least closely related to, one of the Demon Lords."
In short? The cat scratched the back of his head: "It means your relation to it's the same as mine. Sheesh..."
