(The prompt for my Wild Card entry is from MPC36, the cook-off one: digimonforumrp.freeforums.net/thread/3074/mpc-36-heat
As a reward I would like: Posts)
It had begun like any morning for Solomon and Ayumi. A bit of rolling around in bed, a bit of fighting the urge to just sleep some more, and some slowly getting awake by browsing the net a bit. However, upon checking her e-mail inbox, Ayumi was greeted by a mail from the Digital World of all things! It appeared to be a mail thanking them for signing up for the 7th Annual Whitewater Cooking Contest. Ayumi scratched her head.
"Did you sign up for some cooking contest?"
Solomon, wearing his feline holosuit, stretched.
"Hm? Oh, no, I did not, why?"
"We got a mail thanking us for signing up!"
"Oh? How unusual. I wonder who could have signed us up, then."
The two would've been suspicious for longer if they didn't know a person who would do such things behind someone's back because she thinks they'd enjoy it.
"...Mizu..."
A quick call confirmed it. The Betamon was, indeed the culprit. This made trying to wiggle out nigh-on impossible. No use in staving it off...
Ayumi was quite nervous when they arrived at the beachside where the contest was to be held. Solomon seemed to have a cooler head, but the beads of sweat on his forehead gave away his true anxiousness. The crowd of Digimon surrounded the contestants. Besides Solomon, a number of all kinds of Digimon had signed up to show off their cooking skills. The contest was being commented on by the Emcee, an Etemon.
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand welcome, one and all! Are you guys ready for our seventh annual cook-off?!"
The ape's voice echoed over the crowd, which replied with a resounding roar of approval.
"Hahahaha, thought so! For those among you joining us the first time, allow me to give ya the rules! They are simple as hell: Our contestants are given a number of ingredients and spices, and from them they have to cook the best meal possible! This meal is then given to our wonderful judges to be graded!"
The ape-like Digimon pointed at the bench of judges. There were three in total: A WarGreymon, an EbiBurgamon and an Ogremon, one for each attribute. They waved as the crowd cheered them on.
"The two meals that impress the most get special awards, and their cooks then get to show off in a blood-pumping finale! Are y'all ready!?"
The contestants yelled an unequivocal "Yes", the ones of Ayumi and Solomon being rather more nervous than the others.
"Then let's go go go!"
The ape pointed to the sky, and confetti erupted from colourful cannons behind him! A whole cavalcade of V-Mon brought on little carts with an assortment of ingredients. Solomon got a cart with spring onions, bits of octopus, eggs, cabbage, some dashi, some bread and various spices. Hisses filled the air as fire was set to the gas cookers under the pans and pots, and cutlery clicked as the cooks began to make sense of their ingredients. Ayumi scratched her head.
"The heck are we even going to do with all this stuff? Eggs? Octopus? Leeks? This is random!"
The Monodramon scratched his chin.
"...have you ever been to Osaka, Ayumi?"
"Eh? Uuuh, nah! Why do you ask?"
"The Osakans are masters of a dish that uses just these ingredients to conjure up a delight to the tastebuds. As I cook, please ask the V-Mon for some mayonnaise or Worchester sauce."
"Ueeeh? Oh, s-sure!"
As Ayumi can off, Solomon focussed, lightning the fire under his pan, and greased it with plenty of oil. He cut up the cabbage, cracked the eggs, dissolved the dashi in water, cut up the octopus and mixed it all together in a bowl. He was slow, focussed, and precise, unlike some other contestants who tried to hastily mix things together into something edible.
When Ayumi returned, Solomon had formed small pancakes out of the batter he'd made, taking great care to keep them from burning or breaking apart.
"Oooooh! Okonomiyaki! Good call!"
Solomon nodded, and prepared 3 Okonomiyaki for the judges to taste. When the time came to present the dishes, Solomon got nervous again. He watched as a large number of contestants got middling to low scores from the well-trained palates of the judges. With shaky talons, he presented his Okonomiyaki. Each of them took one, and carefully ate them. Seconds passed like hours as Solomon awaited their judgement.
"Finally some edible food.", grunted the Ogremon.
"Ooooh, this is delicious, nice job!~", said the EbiBurgamon.
"A well-made dish, just right in spice and taste. Fried to just the right amount of crispiness. It gets my approval.", said the WarGreymon.
Solomon almost collapsed from relief. They actually liked! Ayumi hugged him when he returned to the cooking spot.
"You did it! I'm so proud!~"
Eventually, Etemon stepped forward again.
"Aaaaaaaaaalright folks! The judges have come to a decision! The two best dishes today were....drum roll please..."
Another V-mon provided said drumroll.
"...the paella by last year's winner, Mr. Shurimon of Terminus..."
The Armor Digmon stood there, arms crossed, and nodding as the crowd cheered.
"...and the Okonomiyaki by the Monodramon by the name of Solomon!"
Solomon stared blankly as the crowd cheered and Ayumi hugged him again.
"Coooooongrats to our winners! That means you get to duke it out together in the final round! Bring forth the final ingredients!"
As the V-Mon troupe brought forth two carts, the Shurimon stepped close, looked down at the nervous Monodramon, huffed condescendingly and then offered one of his hands.
"May the best cook win. Good luck. You'll need it."
Solomon needed 3 seconds to react, then shook his hand before he returned to his spot. Ayumi puffed up her cheeks.
"Humph! How stuck up! Come on, Solomon, kick his butt!"
The two carts were wheeled next to the two finalists, and were revealed to contain the same ingredients: assorted vegetables, rice, vinegar...and a high quality beef tongue.
"Haha, yes, the judges did not shy away from any expenses to make the finale flashy! Both contestants must make the best of an unconventional piece of meat! What will they make? Who knows! All I know is that this will be a tight race! Will our previous champion prevail, or will our newcomer make a surprise victory? Let's find out! Let's go go go!"
More confetti flew as the finale began! Shurimon closed his eyes, then threw up the vegetables and sliced them up while they were in the air with his shurikens. Then, when he caught them with his pan, he began to fry them. The crowd cheered at this display, and Solomon was quite intimidated. How is he going to win against such an expert???
"Come on, Solomon, you can beat this blowhard! Cooking isn't about being flashy, it's about things tasting good! I believe in you!"
Ayumi's faith invigorated the dragon. He took a deep breath, and began to fry the tongue. The eyes of the crowd were on the stretchy ninja, whose contortions and acrobatic maneuvers made for a better show. He was clearly showing off. Solomon just focussed on cooking, making the right cuts, applying the right spices, and making sure everything was cooked just right. Eventually, the moment of judgement came. Shurimon showed off his dish first. He had simply fried the tongue like a steak, and added rice mixed with vegetables as garnish. The judges gave it a careful taste.
"Ah, not bad, not bad!~", said the EbiBurgamon.
"Quite tough, the rice is soaked in the stew and oil of the frying, but it makes for a fascinating culinary experience. I like it.", said the WarGreymon.
The Ogremon spat his food out and growled: "There's sand in this dish you clown."
A gasp went through the crowd as the green Digimon showed the sand grains on his plate.
"Unbelievable! Shurimon has accidentally allowed sand to enter his dish as he twirled about! This might be our newcomer's chance!"
-Now- the crowd's attention was on Solomon. He shook with nervousness as he presented his dish to the judges. Beef tongue, medium grilled, cut into strips, seasoned with rough salt. Rice, boiled in flavoured stew. Broiled vegetables. A meal akin to the gyutan of the Sendai region. Seconds of agony passed as the judges tasted the meal.
"Whoa, this is delicious! I want more!", said the EbiBurgamon.
"It has been grilled to just the right moment, the rice has a fascinating flavour, and the vegetables are still crunchy. I quite enjoy this.", said the WarGreymon.
All eyes were on the Ogremon, who was still eating. Eventually, he had cleaned his plate, and growled: "Gimme some more."
Loud cheers erupted from the crowd.
"Incredible! Ogremon wants seconds! Usually he's incredibly critical of any dishes! This is an expression of quality if I ever saw one! This can only mean one thing: The winner of our contest is Solomon!"
Ayumi's eyes sparkled, Solomon stood there, stupefied.
"You did it! I always knew you could do it! Oh, I am so proud!"
She hugged her partner, who had tears well up in his eyes. Shurimon then approached him, and bowed briefly.
"I have given in to the temptation of hubris, and have lost. Congratulations. I look forward to challenging you again next year."
He then left, as the crowd picked up Solomon to celebrate his victory.
The festivities would last for the rest of the day, with food, drink and celebrating in the streets. When Solomon and Ayumi returned home in the evening, they were exhausted, but happy. It seems they have to thank Mizu for setting them up for this some time...
