Round 2 L. Bracket: Imperial Rumble [Elliot vs. Dante]

Post by Elliot and Isaac Sunderland on Aug 4, 2018 6:04:58 GMT
"A lot of things, really."
It was a pretty shocking admission on Elliot's part, but it was true. By this point he had faced, and been somewhat traumatized by, deep shadow burns, the D-Reaper's corruption, and even his own potential to go berserk. Each and every one of these problems still lingered in the back of his head, and had contributed to his months-long retreat from the Digital World. To this day, he wondered if he'd be able to resolve them or if he would simply have to live with them. And yet, despite all of that . . . "But that's why I'm here, you know? If I don't face it all now, how can I ever get past it all?"
If there was anything Elliot should've been afraid of, though, it was that bomb Arachnemon was about to fire right in his face. The last time, he had been fortunate enough to stack the deck enough to weather the force of the explosion, and even then it left him in an awful daze. Now he had no range advantage, no defenses up, and precious few seconds at best to come up with a plan. What could he even do in a situation like this? If only his opponent wasn't immune to all non-insectoid attacks, or he could have tried a quick strike to interrupt.
Wait. Did the bomb count as an insect attack? Elliot didn't know, but it was the best idea he could think of so far.
In one smooth motion he curled his body up, spitting his Bao Kui lance into his awaiting tail. Then almost as quickly as he curled it he proceeded to unfurl it, hoping to smash into the Spider Bomb like a batter going for a home-run hit. It was one hell of a gamble, and after the last two gambles that Elliot had attempted he highly doubted he'd be lucky enough to pull of the hat trick. But what else could he do? Lay down there and die?
Maybe his next words would be said triumphantly and standing tall, or maybe they would be weakly croaked out after the impact of a Spider Bomb explosion. However, succeed or fail, he only had one question for Wormmon left.
"And you're the one here hiding behind a shield. Are you afraid, too?"
Bao Kui is off cooldown! Battering Ram cooldown: 1/1 Elliot launches the Bao Kui into his tail, swinging his body in a solid motion to try and smash the Spider Bomb away like a baseball bat. If only he knew the attack was remotely detonated . . . Bao Kui: Sandiramon spews a lance of light from his mouth. While Sandiramon is very proficient in the lance, it can also be gifted to allies. Duration: Four Posts. Cooldown: Two Posts.

What Wormmon didn't know is that Elliot had been through more than his fair share of dangerous adventures. It's just that the two had not crossed paths before this. They were not out in a wasteland battling evil Digimon, or fighting against bandits in the forest. They were battling in a tournament with bragging rights on the line. Elliot seems like a nice young gent, but the Worm King has no personal attachment to the Spirit User. There was no grudge, and Archnemon isn't going up against a friend and ally. It was just two Digimon slugging it out in front of a capacity crowd.
While Archnemon starts to prod Elliot and play mind games with the ivory serpent, Elliot makes a good point. The Spider Queen is calling him afraid when they are the one hiding behind a shield. Archnemon makes a flustered face when Elliot calls attention to the hypocrisy.
"Well, err... ah shut it. It's a legitimate strategy!"
The battle continues to wage on, and it was taking its toll on both sides. Elliot tries to smack the approaching Spider Bomb away with his Bao Kui, but a split second after making contact, the bomb goes off close by Elliot. The serpent would be caught by a nearly direct hit, while Wormy takes partial damage from the blowback, as the energy passes right through her barrier.
"Haha! Target hit. Ka-BOOM!!! Heh heh hee hee!"
Archnemon's barrier wouldn't hold for much longer, but the Spider Queen is getting a little two confident. The barrier starts to fade and deactivates, as Wormy is ready for some close range combat. Archnemon crawls across the ring floor as fast as she can before leaping up and pouncing on Elliot while they are recovering from the explosion. Archnemon attempts to use her Venom Bite on Elliot and bite him on his neck. After being hit by the bomb, another attack would surely dish out a game changing hit to Elliot's health. Dante knows that if the venom takes effect, Elliot's vision will be hindered, and that could earn them the victory. ________________
Actions: The Spider Bomb goes off next to Elliot. Archnemon powers down her barrier and launches towards Elliot using her Venom Bite attack.
Venom Bite: Archnemon launches towards the target and bites them with her fangs. Deals regular damage, and decreases the target's vision significantly for 4 posts. 4 post cooldown (once the effect wears off.)
Cooldowns: Spider's Layer (2/3) Spider Queen (5/5) Insect Barrier (0/3) Spider Bomb (1/3) Venom Bite (Duration 0/4 + 0/4)

Trying to engage there may have been a mistake. While Arachnemon had been caught in the splash radius of her attack as planned, Elliot's backside ended up eating the grand majority of the blow. The explosion sent the Sandiramon tumbling away, and sent his Bao Kui flying far into the distance. He landed with enough force to kick up great clouds of dust in his wake, which only served to completely surround him as he gracelessly slid to the outer wall of the arena. He groaned as he finally came to a stop, weakly shaking his tail as if trying to prove to the onlookers that he was still conscious.
Even before Arachnemon barreled down on him, Elliot knew he was in a bad position. He had barely weathered a move of that strength last time, and this time he ate it far more directly. Arachnemon, by contrast, had been behind a bubble of nigh-invulnerability for the back half of the fight. Elliot was exhausted, and Arachnemon had stolen a shot at healing prior. While they had begun the fight on par, Elliot could not deny that Arachnemon was the more efficient predator.
But that didn't mean Elliot was giving up yet.
As Arachnemon leaped for his neck, Elliot promptly rolled to the side to buy himself some space. While Sandiramon was a very long Digimon, he was far from the widest there was, meaning that such a maneuver was doable even with his current energy reserves. Once he had tumbled out of the way he flicked his tail and head up simultaneously, trying his best to wrap around Arachnemon. Would that be putting his coils directly in the path of her gnashing jaws, opening him up for another bite? Totally, but if Elliot was quick enough he wouldn't let her get another bite in.
Whether his grip were firm enough or not, Elliot knew he only had once chance of turning the fight back. The second he was close enough, he turned to Arachnemon and aimed to put a lance through her at point-blank range. If this last-ditch maneuver failed, he was finished.
Battering Ram is of cooldown! Elliot rolls out of the way of Arachnemon's pounce, then attempts to coil around her with what little energy he has left. Whether successful or forced to attack from the back foot, he aims a Fatal Lance directly at her. Fatal Lance: Sandiramon coils around an opponent, then tries to launch the Bao Kui through their body at point-blank range. A devastating technique, but very hard to set up. Cooldown: Two Posts

While Archnemon goes to pounce on the fatigued serpent, Elliot manages to dodge out of the way. The Spider Queen lands on the edge of the ring and slides onto the ground. Archnemon quickly crawls back into the ring to avoid being counted out. However, Elliot is waiting for her. He wraps around Archnemon, constricting the spider.
At point blank range, Elliot thrusts his Bao Kui into her underbelly. Archnemon emits a high-pitched shriek in pain heard all around the arena. This last ditch effort had drastically reduced Archnemon's advantage. While the mid battle heal and barrier had given Archnemon the advantage in longevity, this attack had brought Wormy down almost to Elliot's level of injury.
Archnemon does her best to shake Elliot loose. She fires razor sharp spider thread from her mouth to cut and slice the serpent. Would it be enough to finally silence her opponent? Both parties were exhausted at this point. After that last hit, even Archnemon wouldn't be able to continue fighting for much longer.
It was hard to miss at close range. If Archnemon's threads did their job, then the Spider Queen would manage to free herself. Archnemon takes a few deep breaths, as blood gushes down from her wound. Even after several battles in the Digital World where Archnemon had gone the distance, Dante had never seen her this roughed up. Archnemon continues breathing heavily, using whatever strength she has left to finish up what could be the last few moments in this fight.
"Ha, ha... Have you had enough yet there, no arms? That attack really hurt, but I bet I still have more energy left than you. Are you ready to surrender, or do I have to finish you off myself?"
Dante frantically runs plans in his head. Archnemon just had to hold out a little longer, and they would achieve victory. They could lick their wounds later. Does Elliot have what it takes to finish off the Spider Queen, or would Archnemon win by a pinch thanks to her endurance? The crowd certainly had to be satisfied after an intense fight. One thing Dante noticed is that Wormy hasn't been playing to the crowd lately, instead focused on the fight. Win or lose, Dante was proud of his partner and respected Elliot as an opponent. Maybe one day they would cross paths again and be on the same side battling against evil Digimon. Can Archnemon grasp victory in these last few moments? ________________
Actions: Archnemon attempts to shake Elliot off and shoots razor sharp threads at the serpent.
Spider Thread: Fires razor-sharp wires to cut through objects and tear into flesh.

And so, the fight between two ambush predators ended with both in their natural environments. The snake had the spider in his coils, and the spider had the snake in his clutches. Both refused to let go, even as the exertion from their past wounds lead to them barely able to move. The charring on Elliot's scales from the Insect Bomb was plainly visible to the spectators, and the gaping wound from the Fatal Lance needed no further explanation. Elliot's coils were painful, but Arachnemon's barbed thread was just as much so. They careened into nearly every part of Elliot's side, already battered by explosions and sore from constant tunneling. The snake had to bite down on his tongue to avoid hissing from pain, but even as he squirmed and thrashed he refused to let go.
It was a deadlock. And yet, all they could do was keep staring each other down, Elliot mustering up a weak smirk as he rose to Arachnemon's challenge. "No way . . . am I just gonna give up like that . . ." he gasped, defiantly pulling his coils tighter even as it left exoskeleton digging into his own wounds. A hiss of pain finally escaped his throat, but Elliot refused to let the pain in his eyes show. "Iko . . . I gotta make it back to him, right?"
Yet despite Elliot's tough words, it was clear he was fading. His grip, which he had just went out of his way to tighten, was already starting to slacken once more. His head, once held up high, was now starting to sway and dip down to the floor. Occasionally he found himself closing his eyes, shaking his head suddenly to force himself to stay awake. If Arachnemon could handle these fading remnants of Elliot's last wind, he would find the spirit user pretty much sloughing to the floor at his feet. One way or another, this match was was over. But for who?
Directly ravaged by Arachnemon's onslaught and too tired to even muster up a proper attack, the fast-fading Elliot tries to hold his crushing coils tight. His only hope now is that he can outlast Arachnemon, or at least go out with honor trying.

Both combatants continue fighting it out down to their last breaths. Sandiramon is coiled around Archnemon, but the serpent is losing his grip and slowly sags his head down. Archnemon isn't fairing much better. The spider queen lets out an agonizing shriek as the damage from the battle wears her down. Yet still Wormy continues throwing blows at Elliot.
Dante could do nothing but stand there and watch as his partner is giving their all for victory. It was a familiar feeling for Dante. While he isn't the one putting his neck on the line, he has been in competition before. Despite his hard training, he never seemed to live up to his parents' expectations. As the son of a world famous martial artist and a French pop star, the bar always seemed to be out of reach. Dante closes his eyes for a moment and thinks back to the time he lost in the semi finals in a martial arts tournament.
*Unnecessary flashback to add character development*
A younger Dante is standing in an arena off to the side of the ring with his head hanging low. He is wearing a sweaty gi and his blonde hair is damp and messy. Dante's father is berating him after losing the match.
"Are you happy with yourself? Everyone was talking about how great your last fight was, and then you make it this far only to choke. You are a 2nd generation martial artist!"
"I got tired..."
"You threw it all away. This tournament could have made you a star. Don't you want to make something of yourself? If you can't cut it as a martial artist, how are you going to make a living? You think your mother and I are going to support you your whole life? You've got to strive for excellence."
"I'm trying! I was exhausted and breathing heavily."
"So you just gave up? Oh, Dante... Life is not about fun and games. It's about hard work and being the best. You can't quit whenever things get tough. You have to power through it if you want to get ahead in life. A lot of people were watching your fight. You embarrassed yourself in front of my family and friends. What's worse is that you embarrassed me. How am I ever going to live this down? My colleagues are going to think that I raised a soft son."
"Maybe I wasn't cut from the same cloth as you."
"You're still a spoiled brat. You have no work ethic. Maybe if you didn't sit on your butt playing video games all the time then you wouldn't be a failure."
"I am not a failure! It was one fight. Why is everyone ragging on me?"
"Stop feeling sorry for yourself. One day you're going to find out what it means to be a real man."
*Enough daddy issues, back to the fight*
Archnemon struggles to keep on fighting. They look over at Dante with a tired and exhausted face.
"Argh, Dante! I, I don't know how long I can keep this up. Do you think we should just call this? It's just one fight."
Dante remains silent for a moment. His left eye starts to twitch. He thinks about his father and feels angry. Dante grinds his teeth, then shoots Archnemon a serious glare.
"There will be no surrender. You better win this fight! The Worm King is not a loser. Was all of our training for nothing? All of the adventures we've been on? Bring home the victory! Don't let me down!"
Archnemon is caught off guard by Dante's sudden change of attitude. The Tamer has never talked to Wormy like this before. Wormy's sad expression soon turns to anger, and she lets out a high-pitched war cry. Wormy attempts to grab Elliot by the tail and swing him around, slamming him down on the floor like a pool noodle. Would this be enough to grasp victory, or is Dante making a huge mistake? ________________
Actions: Archnemon attempts to pick Elliot up, swing him around and slam him onto the ground.
Cooldowns: Insect Barrier (2/3) Spider Bomb (3/3) Venom Bite (2/4)

On paper, that may not have been the best of ideas. Serpentine Digimon tended to be quite large for their level, if only to make their primary means of attack have the necessary oomph behind them. Their hefty weight would make Elliot quite difficult to lift, and their great length meant it would've been quite possible for him to sneak a counter-attack in before he fell. In addition, Arachnemon being low on energy reserves would've made such a maneuver all the more difficult. If this maneuver failed, it'd leave Arachnemon in an atrocious position, and Elliot would have been able to follow up for sure.
But the determination of Digimon and trainer when working in sync could do incredible things. With Elliot's own spirit waning as unconsciousness threatened to settle in, and Dante's refusal to let himself fail burning through his body, there was really nothing left Elliot could do in this battle. His eyes widened in shock as he felt himself being lifted up, and despite trying to flail and squirm his way out of Arachnemon's grip he knew that it was time for his curtain call. He could only squeeze his eyes shut and try to brace himself for landing, hoping to invert so his shelled hood would make contact with the ground instead of his jaw.
Even with this brace, though, it was over. Elliot's tremendous bulk hit the ground with enough force to make dust launch off of the arena's floor, and judging by the distant look in his eyes his vision was swimming. He tried to turn to face Dante and Arachnemon, but he could only work up the strength to awkwardly tip towards them. "N . . . nice shot," he stammered out, trying to work up a grin before his head lolled unresponsively to the side.
KO!

This was it. Both combatants are exhausted after a spectacular fight. Elliot proved to be a greater challenge than any opponent the spider queen had faced at the Ultimate level. Dante's determination to win gives Wormy one last push towards victory. If this didn't work, an exhausted Archnemon would be vulnerable to a counterattack.
To Dante's delight, Archnemon successfully lifts Sandiramon off the ground. A sudden *Thud!* is heard throughout the arena as the albino serpent lands on the ring floor. A smile of both relief and joy stretches across Dante's cheeks. Wormy had done it. After they had taken each other to hell and back, one was left standing as the victor.
The crowd erupts as Archnemon is declared the winner. Most of the crowd is cheering Wormy after a hard fought win, but their earlier antics had earned them the ire of many as well. The mixed reaction was mostly positive, but even their detractors would have to give credit where it was due. Dante hurries over to his injured partner to congratulate them.
"Great job! You did it, little buddy." "I did? Yeh-, yaaay…"
Archenmon's body starts to glow white. The spider queen reverts all the way down to her In-training level Minomon. The little green and brown Digimon lays on their side, taking deep breaths. Dante kneels down and picks up his partner. The Tamer couldn't help but feel guilty for pushing his partner this far.
"What's the matter? Too tired for a victory dance?" "Pretty much. I'm ready for a bath, a long nap, and then a huge breakfast. After that, maybe I'll feel like dancing." "Sounds like a plan. Look, I'm sorry for pushing you so hard." "Oh, it's alright. *Cough cough!* I won, and that's what matters, right?" "Ya, I suppose so..."
Was it worth pushing Wormy to the limit to grasp victory? Dante would have to wrestle with that thought later. The redhead wonders what awaits them in the next round. With Wormy in his arms, Dante approaches Elliot to show his appreciation.
"That was a fantastic fight! I can't remember seeing a battle like that before. You are a tough opponent." "Ya, all those spears flying around, my spider web, the bombs, and rolling around in those tunnels, ahh! You brought your A-game, but in the end I am still the gre- ugh... I'm the great... ohh I'm so sore. Everything hurts!" "Too injured to gloat. I feel like a jerk." "Quit complaining. You're not the one who battled, you fluffball."
As great as it felt to see Wormy victorious, Dante is also relieved that is was over. He would stay and speak to Elliot longer before later taking Wormy to see the nurse. Their friends in the crowd are also excited, and wait to congratulate the duo. In the end, what would Dante learn from this fight? Would seeing Wormmon victorious convince him that his father is right, or would seeing his partner seriously injured make him question his father's attitude when it came to competition? For now, Dante is enjoying his time together with Wormmon, and today is one of the highlights of their partnership.
