“Where the heck did this blizzard come from?”
Haru squinted at Hope and Konoha through the snow as they pushed forward, trudging against the wind as it blew ice into their face and snow onto their tongues, clogging and thick. “I’m not an ice digimon” Hope cried back, curled up in Konoha’s arms as the taller fire digimon struggled with their luggage, “Why would I know?” The flame digimon was the warmest spot in the cold and even she was struggling, fiery tail flickering in the cold. “It was rhetor-Never mind. We need to find shelter” Haru called back, eyes brightening hopefully as he spotted two figures in the snow. His prosthetics slipped and stumbled against the snow and he almost fell over in his rush to reach them.
Except, when they got there, they realised it was one not two. One purple dragon digimon crouched over the mangled body of a red shoutmon. Instinctively they all took a step back as the digimon turned, fury in bright blue eyes. “If you touch him, I will kill you” it snarled, voice manging to penetrate the blizzard as it glared at them. Snow fell from its back as it moved and Haru realised it was guarding the fallen one from snow. The dead one. “Is…is that your friend?” Haru asked in concern. “Let me see” Hope demanded, eyes brightening, “I have a healing ability i- I can heal him. My citizens must not suff-“
“SHUT UP”
Haru and Hope faltered as the purple digimon crouched down, teeth bared. “I won’t let either of you near him” it warned, low rumbling growls emanating from the back of its throat, “Don’t even fucking try.” Haru felt a tap on his shoulder and felt Konoha’s warm breath in his ear. “I’ll try and find help.” Haru nodded as she shuffled off at a fast walk. “Where is that one going? Do you have more of your gang?” The diigimon growled, beginning after her.
Haru stepped forward quickly. “Hey, she’s just going to get help for your friend okay?” He said in the most gentle voice he could manage, taking a step towards the purple digimon. This was a mistake, The purple digimon dashed forward, wrapping an arm around Haru’s neck and pulling him away from Hope. As she stepped forward, he lifted his free claw to Haru’s throat, pressing the tips against Haru’s skin. “Don’t even try it, prissy paws” it grumbled, glaring at Hope. Hope flinched, swallowing as she froze mid-step, lowering her paw to the ground.
“Here’s how this is going to work” the purple digimon began, its voice cracking as trembles of adrenaline rushed through his body. “I’m going to kill him.” Hope and Haru flinched. “Then I’m going to kill you.” Haru struggled a little as the digimon clutched him more tightly the digimon sounded like he was about to break into tears. “Then I’m gonna kill myself” he screeched, voice becoming high pitched, “And then I’ll be…I’ll be”
There was a loud thump and the digimon fell to the ground. Behind him, Konoha stood uncertainly, clutching a frying pan. “Did I…I didn’t kill him, did I?” She stammered, looking down at his limp body, “I Just thought you seemed in trouble, so…He’s not dead, right?” Haru rubbed his throat, reaching down to touch the digimon. “I think he’s just knocked out” Haru said slowly, looking over to the red body as snow fell across it, covering it. “Good Job, Konoha” Hope beamed at her, brushing off her fur, “Your assistance was appreciated!”
Konoha smiled back warmly, then looked at the two bodies hesistantly. “Um…now what?” she asked, shivering as another wave of snow blew through them, leaving a coating of white against her fur.Haru frowned, looking around. “We need shelter” he commented. Hope nodded, smiling as she spotted a crevice. “Over there!” she declared, “Haru, carry these two”. Haru nodded, scooping up the purple digimon and his dead friend and cradled them both as they trudged the last distance to the cave.

An hour later, once a fire was blazing in the cave, Konoha had been restrained from setting the entire place alight and they’d settled down to sleep, the purple digimon awoke. Gum sat up blearily and looked around at the strange place, memories slowly trickling back. He’d been on the mountains with Shout. A blizzard had struck. Another digimon had appeared. And Shout ha- Gum doubled over in pain, curling up as he let out a small whimper. Shout had…Shout had…And now he was in this strange place with these stupid people and his body was somewhere out there in the snow. He’d never find him again. Never. “Hey”
Gum started at the sound and turned away, curling closer into itself. The humn pulled himself up onto his arms, watching him from by the fire, wrapping in a sleeping bag and a selection of blankets. “Are you okay?” it asked carefully, “Not too cold, right?” Gum didn’t reply though a twitch in his shoulder showed he was at least listening.
As far as he was concerned, the human could fuck off. He wasn’t okay. He’d never be okay. The human could go die, be ripped apart, eaten alive- His thoughts were interrupted as the human sighed, looking at the fire for a few seconds. “That red guy was your friend” it stated and this time Gum visibly jerked, an audible gasp slipping from his lips. How dare the human…how dare he… “Are you…Obviously you’re not okay but…”
As Gum resisted the urge to just tear out the human’s throat, it scratched its head, trying to put the words together. “You don’t have to sit over there by yourself” it stated bluntly as Gum turned slowly, dark, blurry blue eyes glaring at the human. Was this some kind of stupid trap? Weird kindness? Gum didn’t need it, “I don’t think you should grieve by yourself. Come join us by the fire.” Gum snarled and curled back into himself, tail flexing aggressively and spiked ears flattening against his head.
Gum hissed under his breath, taking thin, raspy breaths as he tried to smother the pain slicing through him in narrow spikes, as if being hammered in deeper every second he was alone. The human was stupid. He had no desire to get involved with any of them. They were worthless losers, they weren’t…he couldn’t…Shout was…He hissed again, wrapping his claws around his torso as hot water threatened to burst from his eyes. He forced it in. That was weak.
“If you don’t come over here, I’ll just go sit by you”. What? Gum’s spiky ears flicked back up he heard the shuffling sound of fabric and boots, following by heavy, approaching footsteps. There was a heavy thump and Gum felt a warm thing slump next to him, not touching but close enough that Gum could feel the warmth emanating from it. He shivered, sliding forward a little bit, refusing to acknowledge the interloper. Fuck off, his brain screeched. Just fuck off and go away. Let me die.
Gum sat very still, claws twitching as he felt the human wriggle closer. If it touched him, he’d rip out the humans throat.. “Don’t touch me” he snapped, turning suddenly, eyes narrowed in fury. The human looked down at him; face an odd mix of a frown and a smile. “Yeah, sure” it replied, slumping against the wall, watching the fire from a distance. “And go away” Gum added in a snarl, getting to his feet, “I don’t want to be near you.” The human smiled at him again and pulled its knees to its chest, hugging them with its arms as it leant back against the cave. Gum noticed the two metal sticks protruding from its joints, curved into thin semi circles with grips on the bottoms.

“I’m an amputee” the human said suddenly, noticing Gum’s attention to his legs. “I lost my feet in an accident, so now I wear prosthetics. Want to see? I can take one off so you can have a look.” Gum didn’t say anything, which the human seemed to take as a yes and began twisting the metal thing, pulling it away from his leg to reveal a stump. It clenched as Gum watched and the human grinned, doing it once more for effect. “Residual muscle” he admitted, “I can actually walk on my legs like this though it’s a bit slow and awkward. Here. My blade.”
The human passed the metal blade to Gum who tentatively took at and looked it over curiously, pain dimming a little in his chest as he distracted himself. It was weird. A fake leg because the human had lost its real ones. So it wasn’t just a pathetic Samaritan, it was a useless cripple too. Still, the thing was pretty neat to look at, surprisingly springy and surprisingly light.
Finally, he passed it backwith a disinterested grunt and slumped back against the wall, biting his teeth as another wave of emotion threatened. He ignored the human as it pulled the prosthetic back on with a deft click and sat back next to him. Gum looked at the other two sleeping bodies. The white one was tossing and turning, kicking her covers as she snored loudly. The flamemon lay tightly curled, one hand loosely dangled in the flames as if they were a safety blanket. Pathetic.
“They’re nice people” the human said suddenly, as if reading Gum’s mind. Startled, Gum looked upward to see him watching. With a flush, he looked away again, annoyance twitching through him. “The Salamon is Hope and she believes she’s true royalty” he explained warmly with a grin, “The Flamemon is Konoha and she’s a normally sweet pyromaniac who goes flame-crazy.” Chuckling, he pulled the blankets around him, and then looked back at Gum. Gum refused to meet his gaze, turning away. The human was trying to soften him up for some reason. And the two digimon were crazy. Completely nuts.
“What was your friend like? The one that died?”
It was a low blow and he hadn’t expected it. Gum let out a wrecked gasp, pressing his claws to his ears as the question sparked memories to sprout across his brain, then blood, then the body. He shook violently, eyes clamping tightly shut as his breath became rapid and his chest tight. A squeak of pain left his body as he shuddered, shaking his head rapidly. His vision narrowed, becoming a black tube with a tiny, distant light at the end. He began to rock, grasping at each breath he could manage. He was going to die.He was definitely going to die. How could he live with this? It was like drinking acid and sitting, waiting as his insides withered away.

Sorry!” The human’s voice sounded distance and muffled as if Gum was hearing him from the bottom of the sea. Gum vaguely felt something touch him and he lased out, struggling, claws dancing across skin before two bands of warmth folded across his back and he felt himself automatically relax as warm fell in around him. He wanted to tell the human to fuck off. He didn’t need this. This was pathetic, weak, stupid and yet he couldn’t bring himself to make the human let go. “Sorry” the voice repeated, a light pressure brushing at his neck, “Sorry. Sorry. It’s okay. You’re okay. It’s okay.”
No it wasn’t. It wasn’t okay at all. Because Shout…”Shout is dead” Gum whispered and at the open acknowledgement, the dam in his eyes broke and hot tears flooded down his cheeks. Fogetting about pride and weakness, he buried his face flat into the human’s chest, and just sobbed, body shaking as tear after tear left his body. He vaguely realised the other two digimon had joined them, as the number of gentle hands increased, but he clung to the original warmth, feeling the human’s arms tighten comfortingly.
Finally, the tears drew to a stop and his sobs became gasping breaths as he continued to shudder. He felt the other two digimon leave, as the human mumbled something to them, leaving him alone with the human. Gum deftly wiped his eyes and fur, refusing to look like a wimp when he finally let go of the human – though he didn’t really want to anymore. The man had been right – it was better to grieve with someone nearby than alone.
With some reluctance, he unclenched his claws and let go of the human, withdrawing with an embarrassed shuffle and an averted gaze. The human stopped him as he moved to sit by himself, instead pulling Gum down next to him, carefully adjusting his blankets so that they were both warm and covered. Gum made to push him away, to get out of the blankets, then decided he didn’t really want to. The human didn’t say anything regarding Gum’s outburst of tears and Gum relaxed, feeling the relief of crying and the warmth wash over him, his eyes drifting shut.

Haru lay awake, arm tightly wrapped around the digimon at his side. His shirt was still damp from tears and he’d had to wipe away a few of his own when the digimon had began sobbing. With a smile, he felt the digimon snuffle and wiggle closer to him, as he slept. “He is asleep now?” Haru looked up as Hope approached, a curious look on her face. She peered down at the squat purple digimon as he wrapped his claws around Haru’s shirt, then glanced at the deep scratches on Haru’s arm. “That was reckless. Don’t forget you’re my general” she said quietly, sitting next to him peacefully. “You’re not as annoyed as I thought you’d be” Haru replied back, smiling at her.
Hope puffed up her fur, affronted, “Annoyed at my general for showing compassion to one of my citizens, albeit a rather murderous one?” she declared in a low, angry whisper, “What sort of queen do you take me for? I am a kind, compassionate, wise ruler!” Haru grinned and closed his eyes, feeling tiredness wash over him. “Good job” he vaguely heard Hope compliment, before his consciousness slipped away into the warm, floating bliss of sleep,
The next morning, Haru awoke bleary eyed to a cold space by his side. The digimon had returned to sitting a distance away against the wall, a sullen look on his face as he stared at the floor. Haru sat up, frowning slightly. With a yawn, he clambered to his feet and stretched his arms above his neck, feeling his muscles click and roll back into place. Restlessness seeping into his muscles, he hopped up and down on his prosthetics, feeling the burst of energy race into his gut like fire, waking him up and brightening his eyes.
“WILL YOU STOP?” Hope erupted, leaping from her bed with a snarl of morning temper as Konoha rubbed her eyes blearily next to her, “I need my morning sleep in order to stay fresh and beautiful!” Haru grinned, “You won’t stay beautiful if you don’t do morning exercise” he replied, eyes glinting as Hope shot him a sour look. With a huff, she began to jump up and down as well, panting after a few minutes as she matched Haru’s pace. “Konoha, you will jump as well” She declared, to Konoha’s obvious horror, “I refuse to suffer alone. And you, dragon.”
Haru grinned as the purple digimon started, caught surreptitiously watching them. He glared at them but amazingly got to his feet, jumping up and down in light, fluid hops. Aggressively, he picked up the pace, shooting a glare at them and Haru grinned wickedly, speeding up to match it, to the digimon’s surprise. The digimon began to leap faster, beginning to use his tail as a spring board and Haru continued to match him, though he struggled as the speed began to become punishingly, clenching his teeth. A small grin spread across the digimon’s face as they competed, each pushing to a faster smile and Haru grinned back, even as his thighs and the stumps of his calves began to scream in protest. Eventually, he stopped, collapsing onto his knees as the purple digimon bounced once more, letting out a triumphant cackle.
Hope and Konoha had long since abandoned the exercise and Konoha had heated some beans on the fire, passing a bowl to Hope. She smiled up at Haru and the purple digimon as they approached and Haru passed the first bowl to the purple digimon, yielding it as loser of the contest. It took it reluctantly, sniffing it carefully before it took a tiny bite, chewing it suspiciously. Once it was fairly obvious the food WAS edible, the creature dove in. Haru took his own bowl and sat down, pulling off his running blades to massage his joints.
“I have decided that we will leave in exactly one hour” Hope declared over her beans, fur smeared with orange. She licked it off hungrily before drawing herself to a proud height, looking at them imperiously, “We have spent too long in these mountains, so we will be going back to the flatlands. Any questions?” Konoha immediately raised her hand. “Are we going to Whitewater?” she asked excitedly, “I’ve always wanted to go there – they say the food is delicious and I’ve never been to any city but terminus.”

Hope stared at her, a small frown spreading across her face. “You know it’s by the sea, right?” she asked doubtfully. Konoha nodded, a beaming smile on her face. "Of course" she exclaimed, "The sun, the blazing sand, the clear skies..." she said dopily. "The water?" Hope asked and Konoha waved her hand dismissively. Hope shrugged and rolled her eyes.
“I will consider it” she declared primly to a look of dismay on Konoha’s face, “Anyone else?” Haru shook his head, turning to the purple diigmon sat next to him. It had gone quiet, bowl half finished as it lowered it slightly. “Hey” Haru said and the digimon looked at him quickly, “Do you want to come with us? I mean, you don’t have anywhere else to go, it’s pretty lonely by yourself and it’ll be awesome to have someone else around who likes to run.” The digimon hesitated, looking up at him, then at the other two. “I don’t think they would agree” it mumbled, looking at its feet. “Au contraire” Hope declared over her beans, “I was considering asking you to join myself.” Haru and the digimon turned to stare at her in surprise. Hope blinked back at them. “What?” she asked, flicking her head to one side, “I have the perfect role for him Besides, I don’t know why you thought you could recruit. This is MY army, dear Haru.” Haru grinned sheepishly, picking up his spoon and scooping out a small pile of beans. He chewed them for a few moments then asked curiously, “So…what’s the job?”
Hope beamed delightedly. “I am glad you asked” she purred, jabbing her paw at the purple digimon. “I would like this Gumdramon to be your body guard!” Konoha, Haru and the dragon all stared at her. “Wait, what?” they said simultaneously. Hope rolled her eyes, practically puffing up with delight at their confused reaction. “Isn’t it obvious? It is to me” she boasted, “From the way he almost filleted you, Haru, I think he must be a competent and relatively unorthodox fighter. Not to mention he obviously likes competition. I’m willing to bet he loves to fight as well. If the shoe fits… Am I right, Gumdramon?”

The Gumdramon stared at her and then at Haru who shrugged, raising an eyebrow. “So..”it asked slowly, “It’’ll be my job to fight anyone who tries to get too close or hurt this human?” Hope nodded once. “Anyone and everyone?” Hope nodded twice. “Even if there are loads of enemies?” Hope winced, scratching her ear. “If it sounds like too much, I suppose we can adjust the terms” she said begrudgingly, “Maybe share the role with Konoha.” Konoha flinched, withdrawing, “Um, I’m really not very keen on fighting and this sounds awfully brutal” she stammered, tail dimming in fright.
“I’ll do it” the gumdramon interrupted. Hope and Konoha looked at him to see his eyes sparkling, a dopey grin on his face at the thought of so many opponents, “I’ll kill every last freaking one of them. It’ll be so much fun!” Hope beamed in a pleased grin whilst Haru smiled and Konoha gaped in amazement. “Excellent” Hope said primly, “We will leave in an hour, as decided last night. Haru, fill in our new recruit, please.”
Haru grinned, reaching out to rub the digimon’s head warmly. It frowned but didn’t immediately pull back, stiffening under the weird sensation. After a few moments, Haru’s grin disappeared and he touched the digimon’s shoulder instead reassuringly. “We were planning to bury your friend this morning. Is that already?”
The digimon’s face went blanche. “You…You still have his body?” he stammered, tears welling up in its eyes, “You d-didn’t l-leave it?” Haru shook his head, indicating a carefully wrapped bundle in the corner. “We carefully sealed him in a bag so he wouldn’t be disturbed too much” Haru admitted. The digimon nodded, looking at the ground. “T-thank you” it whispered, shaking slightly.
“It’s alright” Haru said kindly. “We’ll bury him with a clear gravestone so you can find it again if you fancy visiting. By the way, it’s a bit weird to ask now, but what’s your name?” The digimon looked up at him through watery eyes, wiping them away embarrassedly. “Gum” Gum mumbled, “Short for Gumdramon.”
---
The human’s face burst into a smile and he took Gum’s hand, shaking it warmly. Being a bodyguard for this person wouldn’t be too bad, Gum finally decided as they shook hands, frowning at the weird feel of skin against his scales. The human wasn’t too pathetic. He’d managed to keep up during the jumping jacks, which was pretty cool. The white digimon was less annoying than he’d expected too, though the flamemon still seemed like a major whimp. Made good beans though.
“Nice to be working with you, Gum”, the human said warmly, smiling down at him.Gum smiled faintly back, trying to adjust to thinking of these people as his new group. They weren’t…They weren’t Shout but they would do.. “What’s yours?” he asked back, frowning. The human had told him Konoha and Hope’s names, but not his own. “You didn’t tell me yours either”. The human’s face wrinkled in surprise then relaxed into a gentle grin. “It’s Haru” Haru admitted, “Hatsuharu Akatsuka.” Haru. Gum thought. What did that mean in digi-language again? Sun, right? A toothy grin spread across Gum’s face as they turned, following the others to the bag. Sun. What a pathetic name. He started to giggle.
"What?" Haru asked.
He sBAN ME PLEASEed again. "Nothing!"
