It was three nights that Colin and his partners spent wandering the Dark Area. The first was the worst. Bellamy, having witnessed his fiance lose control of himself and then disappear, without him being able to do a thing to stop it, the Impmon's tears flowed heavily that day. So much so that he almost died of dehydration. It was only a matter of luck, or perhaps, Colin's digivice that had brought them to the drinkable spring that had saved him. The water was bitter and sulphurous, but potable. And Bellamy had drunk enough to survive.
Unfortunately, it was one of the few in the area, and others soon joined them, many with hostile intent at the sight of a human. Thus Colin evolved Luke to his Ultimate level, and fended off the dark area digimon with warning blasts of energy. When one attacked, Luke killed him with a Storm Beam, but let his data disperse naturally. From then on, they were disturbed a lot less often, but, they were forced to wander the lands alone.
The first night, they slept in what they hoped was a hidden part of the canyons that lined this part of the world. Protected from three sides by the canyon walls, it was probably the safest place to be. Luke stood guard that night, and Colin slept alongside Bellamy, holding the furred Impmon in his arms, acknowledging his sadness and pain. Bellamy stopped crying only then, and they fell asleep in their embrace. But their torment did not end there. As they had biomerged, they were subconsciously acute to each others' internal troubles, and their dreams were full of chaos and despair, so much that they woke up several times, but were instantly relaxed by the fact that Bellamy had his human partner directly there, and that Colin had the same in return.
That was the hard part. The second day was like that, but with all three of them capable of coping now. Bellamy walked, Colin walked, Luke slept on Colin's back. As the Dark Area grew darker, that seemed their best way forward. Keep either brother rested, one on the watch. They were not attacked on the second day, and Bellamy was much more alert. And, to Colin's surprise, Bellamy insisted they change for tonight. So it was him that took guard, while Colin rested with Luke.
Luke himself was trying his best to hold his composure here. He had only just begun to start a relationship with a lovely Veemon that he felt shared so much interests with himself. Also a twin partner to a human, also with a thrill for exploration and adventure, also with complex feelings of how he became a twin brother to another in the first place. But Luke held those thoughts down here. This was not the time for selfish indulgences like this. This was the time to find their lost friends, and bring them back to safety. The Elecmon was thankful for Colin's embrace that night. That was the thing both he and his Impmon brother loved most about Colin. Yeah, he tried to be a typical stoic human male by day, but, in privacy, he would embrace them warmly. He'd pet them where they wanted, he'd hold them close to him, he would make them feel protected.
Even if the reality was that they were in fact protecting him, well, Colin was bigger than the both of them, and somehow, laying to rest at night cuddled with a human as big as he was, well, it felt as about as safe as one could get in the digital world. And both Luke and Bellamy knew it. Colin loved them, and they loved Colin, that's all there was to it. And, as Luke slowly eased off to sleep, that might be the thing that would save them in the Dark Area. Love. Yet... Bellamy loved Coronamon, and, he had seemingly lost control. Just what was that? Well... hopefully they would get their answers soon. Tomorrow, they would advance further into the abyss of the Dark Area. And there, hopefully they would begin to find answers.

Colin and his partners had been moving through the dark area for quite some time, but they were sure they were on the right track. They travelled on foot, as it seemed they would be quickly seen if they travelled at a higher level. Which was the main reason they did not summon Daedalus again. Colin was terrified of being overwhelmed again. He wanted to find Marshal and Coronamon, not face Barbamon or Zanbamon again. Apollomon, assuming that was his form still, had burned a long path of destruction through the wasteland. Scorched ground extended as far as the eye could see. Every crater, every wretched blackened rock made Bellamy sigh, holding back tears. "There was nothing you could do, Bellamy" Colin would tell him. "I know, I know" Bellamy replied. The further they walked the Dark Area, the more foreboding the atmosphere felt. None of them could shake off the feeling that they were being watched. Colin also noted that he had no access to the Tamernet either, so he had no way of letting others know about this setback. "Hopefully Sophie's handling the situation okay" Colin would remark to his partners afterward. Then, after seemingly five days of walking, they felt a familiar, uncomfortable presence here. One they had felt before in the cipher jungle. "...a control spire" Luke said, immediately recognizing it. When he said those words, Colin's red eyes widened in horror. His breathing increased, he could feel his heart pounding in his chest. "Colin, we have to armor digivolve!"
'A control spire?! Out here?! Did... did it catch Marshal and Coronamon? Can we handle it by ourselves?!' more and more questions of doubt spun around in Colin's mind. He saw his partners looking up at him. He had to act.
"R-right..." Colin answered, accessing his D-Terminal where the Digimentals of Compassion and Tenacity were stored. "Digiarmor... Energize..." he would say, but, his hand was shaking. The crests were not responding. "Colin?" Bellamy asked his partner. "You okay...?""...I CAN'T DO THIS!!" Colin suddenly screamed, dropping his D-Terminal. Luke and Bellamy stepped back in shock. He collapsed to his knees, tears running from his eyes, clutching his head as he sobbed. "I... I WAS SO STUPID!! I SHOULDN'T HAVE COME HERE!! I... WANT TO GO HOME!!"Seeing Colin break down like this was something that neither Luke and Bellamy had ever seen before. Luke stared, mouth open. Bellamy cautiously approached the boy. With Colin, he had been so stable and stoic that it was easy to forget he was only fifteen. He had never been tested like this before, and, it seemed that this new situation had pushed him over the edge. "It's okay, Colin, we're here, pal" Bellamy said, gently patting his shoulder. "We'll just go around the tower and ignore it, then we'll find Coronamon and Marshal""And if they fight us again what next?!" Colin snapped at him. "Do we fight them?! Do we hurt them?! I can't do that!!"Seeing Colin lose it like this made Luke begin to shiver a little from nervousness. Colin had been the force that had held them together here, and now, it seemed what little composure he had left had snapped. He was exhausted, scared, and with the effect of the control spire, no longer able to evolve his partners to the level he thought they'd be capable of. "We... could go home?" Bellamy said hesitantly. "I can't do that either, Bellamy!" Colin sobbed. "Coronamon's your fiance! I can't make you abandon him..."It was here that Luke finally stepped forward. The Elecmon didn't say anything, simply walked up to Colin and gave him a long, silent hug. Bellamy did the same. Colin's tears drenched their fur as he hugged them back. "I'm s-sorry..." Colin whimpered, feeling pathetic for breaking like that. "Don't be..." a new voice said from behind them. Luke and Bellamy immediately stood to attention, conjuring a ball of lightning and fire respectively. The digimon they saw made their eyes widen, their attacks fading. Colin ceased his crying, sniffling a little as he turned his head. A digimon the size and shape of a large human was standing thirty feet behind them. A giant sword was stored on his back, with two more in their scabbards on his waist. He stood with his arms folded, leering down at them. "The Dark Area has broken stronger humans than you" the digimon continued. "D-Dinohumon?!" Luke asked, horrified. Was... was this the same one? "I hear that you two go by the names of Luke and Bellamy now" he said. "But I know what you mean to ask. Yes. It is me"."S-stay away from us you bastard!" Bellamy snarled, conjuring another fireball and launched it at him. To his shock, the fireball went through him as though he was just an illusion. An illusion... was this Barbamon's work? There had to be an emitter around here somewhere! "Don't bother with that, I cannot harm you, and you cannot harm me" said Dinohumon. "My associate Barbamon's illusionary abilities have their uses"."Not Dinohumon... Zanbamon..." Luke breathed. "What do you want?""What you want. To end our dispute" came the reply. "It seems I made a mistake in sparing your lives all that long ago. I wish to defeat you both in battle, then erase you from my life forever"."We haven't done anything to you... yet" Bellamy pointed out. "The hell is your beef with us?""You have both haunted me for years" Dinohumon answered. "I did not fully absorb your data, only parts of it. It seems that when you were reconfigured, you relied on each other's data to fill the missing parts, hence your... abnormal features", he was referring to Bellamy's fur and Luke's impish features. "Fuck you we ain't abnormal!" Bellamy spat. "Perhaps... but the spirits of "Impy" and "Leky" have followed me like a shadow. And so I want to remove the both of you from this world forever so that I can be at peace"."Like hell you are! We're gonna erase you from this world!" the Impmon snarled. "I'm sure you'll try" said the illusion. "But before any of us can get what we want, you will need to do something first. I take it that you are aware of the presence of a "Control Spire" nearby?" "...we are" Luke answered, carefully. "I have bound what was left of the spirits of Impy and Leky to it" Dinohumon said. "You must face them in battle, destroy them, and become whole again. Only then will you be fully gone when I destroy you"."W-what?!" Luke asked, horrified. "Impy... Leky... they're... how?!""You will know when you see them" Dinohumon said, simply. "We will meet again soon". And then he disappeared, leaving the three of them stunned. "I thought... you two were Impy and Leky" Colin said, looking between the two of them with confusion. "We were, but..." Bellamy couldn't find words to say here. He turned to Luke, then Colin. "We have to figure this out!" he declared. "If Impy and Leky are still alive, we... we just gotta find out, you know?!""I agree" Luke concurred. "But this could be a trap. We approach carefully, see what's there, then retreat if there's anything there we don't know about..." he then turned hesitantly back to Colin. "If... if you want to do that, Colin" he added gently. "We're doing it" Colin said, picking up his D-Terminal and stood back up. "He said too much that was familiar to me. Don't forget, I have your memories too. I know what he was talking about".Well then, it seemed their course was set. Colin and his partners would thus move in the direction of what they expected to be a Dark Tower. And next to it, an Impmon and Elecmon.

Colin and his partners approached the control spire, all three of them tense from what they would find there. According to the illusion of Dinohumon, the digimon that had caused so much pain to Luke and Bellamy all those years ago, they would find the shadows of Impy and Leky, the digimon that they were once before they had been reconfigured into Bellamy and Luke.
By now, Colin was both emotionally and physically exhausted. The dark area was not only barren and bleak, but exceptionally dry. Colin would grow to a big and strong man eventually, but that didn't mean he was robust. Dry climates weakened him considerably. One night, he suffered a nosebleed so severe that his partners had to supervise him the entire night, holding a bandage to his nostrils firmly until it stopped.
Thankfully Colin didn't bleed out enough for it to be a problem, but, it certainly depleted some of his reserve energy. So much that at times in the approach to the control spire he'd freeze up, unable to proceed further, but by now his partners knew how to help him continue on. Neither of them were selfish enough to make him know that this was their history, not his, but, they managed to simply look at Colin to remind him. And he understood, and proceeded.
As luck would have it, water was not difficult to source for a time. Luke could simply armor digivolve to RedLekismon and he'd provide enough water for their sustenance. But, as they neared the final half mile to the tower, they realized... this wasn't an ordinary edifice. So heavy was its power that neither Luke or Bellamy could evolve to their armor forms. For a moment they were worried that Colin was too weak to continue, but, the boy was desperately trying all he could. It wasn't his strength in question, it was the strength of the tower, and it seemed that this was a model that could block out even armor digivolutions.
"...this is bad" Colin stated the obvious. Luke and Bellamy concurred. "Let's go ahead slowly, guys, make sure we're not ambushed".
They did so, proceeding carefully forward. But, in a wasteland such as this, it was mostly pointless. They could see for miles around, therefore they could be seen for miles around as well. And, sure enough, between them and the giant black obelisk, they saw two figures. One red, one purple.
"Oh no... it's true" Luke whispered, putting his paws to his mouth in horror. It seemed that Dinohumon's words were not lies. Leky and Impy still roamed the digital world in their own, sad way.
As they neared, Colin noted the differences. Leky was an Elecmon, yes, but unlike Luke, he walked on all fours and lacked the blue scarf. And Impy, unlike Bellamy, did not have a white belly, and lacked the fur that his partner had.
And as they continued onward, they saw that both of them had black rings around their necks. This made them hesitate. Dark rings, dark prospects. Were these two acting of their own accord? The rings made it impossible to know. All they could do was walk forward toward these two digimon... whose eyes glowed a disturbing crimson.
They continued to approach until they were about twenty metres away, well within talking, and indeed, attacking distance. There was an awkward pause before Colin eventually spoke.
"So... you're Impy and Leky?" he prompted. The two digimon turned to him.
"We are" they said together, their voices near identical to Luke and Bellamy's. From there they spoke separately.
"So, the incomplete twins have finally sought us out."
"Indeed. They think they're worthy enough to take the rest of their lost power."
Colin was about to say something, but Bellamy stopped him. "Don't bother, Colin, they're Zanbamon's puppets now."
"Oh, is that so?!" the digimon identified as Impy snarled quite suddenly, so much that Bellamy flinched and took a step backward. "Bellamy, is it? I assure you, I'm no puppet of Zanbamon's. I want him dead as much as you do, but, to do so, I need to absorb you to regain my strength."
"And I need to do the same to you, 'Luke'" Leky snapped as well. These words confused Colin and his partners. They were lead to believe that these shadows of "Impy" and "Leky" were merely soulless automatons, lingering shadows of the digimon that Luke and Bellamy once were. But that they seemed to want to reunite with their old data... this didn't factor into their plans at all.
"I see it in your eyes, you want to know why" Leky stated. "After we were destroyed, you two were lost souls, but then you found a human to fill the holes in you. I regret to inform you... that will never complete the digimon that you once were."
Luke and Bellamy flinched from that. Colin gasped as well. All of them knew what they meant. That they were implying that because part of their data had been absorbed and had rendered Luke and Bellamy as twin brothers, their data could only be completed by becoming one with a human tamer. And that seemed to imply they were weak and unworthy because of it.
Luke and Bellamy growled for a moment as they gathered their response, but to their surprise, Colin responded first.
"That might be true, I don't know. I also don't care. Luke and Bellamy are my partners, now and forever. If you want to challenge us to see whose data is more worthy, I'll just say to you, bring it. Leky, Impy, you're only now just puppets of Zanbamon, and now, I'm going to destroy you, and return your data to my partners, where it rightly belongs."
Luke and Bellamy turned to look at him with worried expressions at these words, but the look on Colin's face said that he wasn't joking. He was determined to end this here. This was simply an obstacle he had to break through to find Apollomon in this wasteland.

The words of Colin's challenge lingered in the air. Colin himself couldn't believe he had just said that. That it was his intention to have Luke and Bellamy defeat these two digimon and absorb them. For a moment, the twins looked back at their partner to see if he was speaking true.
Colin stood with an expression of cold fury on his face. He had suffered greatly through this whole expedition. He was even paler than usual, but, there was no question of the strength he had at this moment. He would be here for a fight.
For a moment, the twins were scared, but then they realized, Colin shared their memories. When they biomerged, Colin had understood the full extent of their suffering. And in turn, they could tell he loved them. And then they both realized that it seemed to be Colin's intention to fix that.
"Colin, I know what you're thinking, please, stay back!" Luke cried out to him. "Let us handle this! We don't know what powers are in play... don't let us lose you too!"
With those words, Colin was jolted back to reality. For a moment, he was almost prepared to charge down these two digimon himself and use his superior strength and mass to destroy them with his bare hands, maybe surprise them a little, but then he realized how foolish this would have been. Luke was right. If he battled himself, he would have possibly ended his life. Digimon weren't like humans. For a time, Colin had lost sight of that. For over two years, Luke and Bellamy had been his friends; his familiars, but the reality was if they were felled in battle, they would come back more likely than not. If he fell, he would never come back.
That thought lingered. Colin would never come back if he died here. Then... what was he even doing here? What would his parents think of that? What would his sister Sophie? Was he really prepared to throw his life away like that?
Colin's arms shook as he realized the true meaning of what was going on here. This wasn't something he was prepared for, not truly. The reality here was that he just wanted to find the crux of the problem his partners had and help them with their revenge. But, he found that with his active participation in their story, he put himself in their problems, and that was an additional problem for them too. Colin realized this, then stood back, his face fixed with an expression of shock.
But before he could react, the digimon in front of them attacked. The enemy Impmon coated his fist in flame and rushed forward, aiming a punch at Bellamy. And the enemy Elecmon had his fist erupt in electrical energy and aimed a punch at Luke.
Both of the brothers did their best to evade the blows. Luke ducked down under the hit, immediately swiveling his body around to try and attempt a counter-attack, but to his horror, the punch had simply been a feint. The enemy Elecmon had his tail feathers burst with lightning and struck him with a thunderbolt, making him yelp in agony.
Bellamy did little better. He evaded the punch by jumping high into the air, and was about to aim a fireball back down at his opponent, but the enemy Impmon instead continued his strike with a rapid-fire launch of razor sharp ice crystals. Bellamy could not evade, instead only bracing himself. The ice shards cut and impaled him, making him fall to the ground in agony.
Colin thus suffered his second shock. Seeing his partners hurt like this... he should have prevented that. But his own chaotic emotions in this moment had prevented him from doing so. He thought his partners had this in the bag, but, the reanimated spirits of Impy and Leky seemed to be more powerful than them. How? Why?
Still, it would take more than that to keep Luke and Bellamy down. They brushed themselves off and stood back up, ready to continue the battle. Luke made an identical strike as his opponent did, leaping into the air, charging the feathers on his tail, and cast a bolt of lightning onto the enemy Elecmon. Thankfully this one struck, making the enemy flinch.
Bellamy did the same, although his method was different. He rushed forward to pretend he was making a melee attack, but instead of landing the punch at the last moment, he instead snapped his fingers, yelled "Semper Fire!!" and conjured an eruption of flames around the enemy Impmon, to which all he could do to defend was to cross his arms in front of his face.
The second round of the fight seemed to return to the brothers, but, both had been stung so far themselves in the first round. How could they win this in these circumstances?

The battle continued in front of him. Colin's red eyes were widened in horror. Every time his partners managed to make a hit on the enemy, it seemed seconds later that they would suffer a hit in return. Neither side could gain the advantage on the other. He didn't know how he could change this for the moment. Luke and Bellamy couldn't have been expected to come up with a solution of their own, they were busy out there, putting their lives on the line. How could Colin help them?
Colin could only look to his digivice. Maybe calling a friend on Tamernet could help them? If this Control Spire didn't block out the signal of course, but... maybe that wouldn't be necessary? Colin took a closer look at his digivice. The... card slot! Of course! Colin could help his partners with cards!
"I won't stay out of this, guys!" Colin declared, suddenly feeling something of a second wind behind him. All along, he had the power to make his partners win. And he intended to do so.
But... what card to use here? With a control spire this powerful, it was likely only low level cards would work here. He had to think. What were his partners' strengths?
Bellamy's strength was that he was very agile and adept with magic, but did poorly in melee combat. Luke meanwhile, while appearing small, was stronger than he looked, and was deft with a polearm weapon. That gave Colin his first idea.
"Digimodify!" he cried, scanning the card through his D-Arc. "Sistermon's Cross Barbee Activate!"
At once, the ground next to Luke flashed blue. The Elecmon smiled as he realized what Colin had done. At once, he grabbed the handle of the weapon that erupted from below, then twirled it around so that it faced the foe.
"Bells, get behind me!" he told his brother. Bellamy hesitated for only a second, but once he realized what the new situation was, he did so. Luke meanwhile pointed his new trident weapon at the foe.
"Think you can get past me? Just try..." Luke challenged them. And try they did. The Elecmon faced an onslaught of attacks as they tried to break through his guard, but he had been training with this weapon for years now, and he knew all of the ways to block and parry. A deft slash would deflect fireballs, holding it in defense blocked the lightning... wherever Luke wanted the edge of the polearm to go, it would go, he knew the movements to get it there and get it quickly.
Colin knew not to hesitate meanwhile. He had to follow this up with a counter-attack, and he had the perfect one in mind.
"Digimodify! Renamon's Diamond Storm Activate!"
This card he activated on Bellamy. While Luke was holding the defense, it allowed the Impmon to jump over him, somersault once, gather a cluster of glowing arrowheads in his crossed arms, then prepare for attack.
"Diamond Storm!" Bellamy snarled, launching the attack upon Impy and Leky. Both of them were forced to duck and brace from the onslaught, but Luke was not ready to hold back. He knew what was at stake here, and while Bellamy pinned them down, he launched into an attack of his own, slashing his trident directly at the foe. What his attack did made everyone involved stare.
Luke wasn't messing around here. He had aimed his attack at Impy's weak spot, directly at his throat, and had landed a fatal blow. Impy clutched at his throat in agony, making terrible choking sounds, falling to his knees. Leky retaliated by launching himself at Luke, seeking to avenge his brother, but Colin had one last card in store.
"Digimodify... Commandramon's Rifle activate." Colin said, in a somewhat more solemn voice than before. An assault rifle materialized in Bellamy's paws. His green eyes widened when he realized what it was and what he needed to do with it, but... he accepted it as necessary. All he needed to do next was aim and fire, and he did so.
It was over in less than a minute. Luke and Bellamy lowered their weapons as they saw what they had done. The mortally wounded Impy and Leky were both on the ground, gasping their last breaths with futility. It was done, they were finished, their disintegrating bodies were proof of that. Colin approached, gently resting his hands on their shoulders.
"Are you... gonna go through with it?" he asked them.
"We have to." was Bellamy's reply. Luke merely nodded in agreement. Colin said nothing more, and would let them go about this their own way.
Both Luke and Bellamy hated the idea of absorbing other digimon. It meant depriving other digimon of their mortal souls. If another digimon did that to someone they cared about, there would be no limit to how much they would retaliate against them.
But... Impy and Leky no longer had their souls. They lived on... as Bellamy and Luke. And they were entitled to be whole again.
"Colin... please don't watch us" was all Luke asked. And to this, Colin agreed, turning his back as his partners did what they said they would. When he turned back around, Leky was now a part of Luke, and Impy was now a part of Bellamy.
Both of his partners stood frozen for a few moments. "Guys... are you okay?" Colin asked them, gently.
The twins turned around too. Luke was silent, but Bellamy spoke. "Colin... it feels like... I'm now complete, but empty too..."
Luke nodded, then began to sob. Colin could only kneel down, and brought them both into a hug, stroking their fur. It was all he could do. He knew what the next step from here was. Next stop, Zanbamon. But... not just yet.
"We should rest first." Colin said, leading his partners away from the corrupted canopy of the control spire. He knew neither of them had the strength to bring it down, so they should just leave the wretched structure alone for now. But, at least, this stage of their ordeal was over.
[Thread end].
