That Whole "Romance" Thing (Valentines 2019, Kan)

It seemed like a reasonable plan at first.
Pose as a human, her own Tamer, on Tamernet, get someone interested, and meet up with a human. Easy enough. But would said human believe what she wants? If Alice isn't going to teach her some things, she might as well find them out herself, after all.
Dorothy kicks her feet idly as she sits on the balcony of a cafe in Rosewood, dressed as casually as she can possibly be with human-made clothing, but the inhuman features are still more than obvious. Jagged teeth, faintly glowing, catlike eyes, huge, clawed hands covered by the same gloves she always wears... Barely able to pass as a normal human being at a distance, but enough, she thinks to herself. All those questions she asked Alice about human beings and behavior hopefully pay off as she waits for the person she called over to come, slightly impatient from all the anticipation.
With her human partner busy teaching at that old schoolhouse not too far off, the Witchmon is left to her own thoughts, broom at her side. Would they understand her feelings? She shakes her head, still uncertain. Are other Digimon staring at her and the fact she's in anything other than the typical red dress? Would it be better if she was in that? With all these questions swimming in her head, she begins to think this is a bad idea, but it's too late to really turn back.
She looks up at the sky, the large trees Rosewood is built around obscuring some, but not all of the daylight, and looks back down quickly, shutting her eyes and nearly losing her balance. Everything's too bright without that hat of hers to shield her eyes from the sun. With all this doubt crawling through her mind, it isn't easy to focus on the positive, the Witchmon deciding to hop off the guard rail and sit somewhere more rational. Her mind wanders, thinking of who she'll meet... Handsome? Hopefully.

To kan dating wasn't something that he did normally; but after his... shift in spirits and his recovery he decided to try to do something new. Something that he never really put much faith in before. Something that given his... line of work would of been difficult to sort of work with in the long run.
But he took a sort of leap of faith here by allowing himself to bounce over tamernet. Even finding someone that seemed interested in trying a date in a fledgling city. He had heard of rosewood before and had never been there properly. But that didn't stop him from agreeing to go there; if it turned out bad he could just as easily hop out of the place.
But honestly as he was walking through the few streets of rosewood in that deep blue suit that he had picked out for just this occasion he found himself liking how peaceful it was here. He would have to give this... 'Alice' props for picking such a location.
He'd carefully pick through the streets up until he found himself just a few buildings down from where they had agreed to meet. Furrowing his brow he'd slowly approach, finding that there was no one matching the description of the tamer standing by the entry; well no human at least... He'd grit his teeth and step lightly; a boquet of flowers gripped softly in one hand while he checked his watch on the other.
A little bit early sure but...
He'd quietly stare forward, his eyes locking on the witchmon that was sitting close to the cafe. Was it a safe bet to assume that this was a spirit user and not a tamer or...? He'd scratch at his neck and approach; his voice certainly sounded rougher than he wished but it wasn't something he could exactly control.
"Erm... Are you Alice?"

"Umm..." Right off the bat, Dorothy's face flushes bright red for a moment, her eyes darting from place to place so rapidly, her reaction one of confusion initially until she finally processes what she's seeing. "...I-I'll explain, but thank you for coming!" Her expression starts nervous as she assumes that the rugged, slightly intimidating but friendly individual was expecting something more formal. "Please, sit down. I'm sure things will, umm... Be nice here, yeah." After seating herself, the alleged Tamer decides to reveal her true nature.
"Okay, so... How do I tell ya this... I lied. I'm not Alice, she's my Tamer. Got green hair, loves books. A pretty good girl... Just not really that interested in much other than learnin' about stuff." Up close, it's obvious that this blonde haired individual is only pretending to be human, the red marks under her eyes one of many obvious signs. "I'm her partner... She, uhh, calls me Dorothy. Ya can call me that too, if ya like." With an uncertain, toothy grin, she seems honest enough, despite her slightly underhanded methods of getting someone to talk to her. "While Alice is busy, I kinda wanna know somethin' she ain't willing to talk to me about... Y'know, human stuff. Concepts like, uhh... Love and... Stuff." Her face goes a little red again upon mentioning the word. "...Kinda used to bein' violent, wild 'n angry, so it must be weird to hear someone like me talk 'bout this."
She gulps, a slight anxiety showing through. Perhaps being honest is the best bet she's got at this point. "It's not exactly Digimon-like to dress up like this, but... I really wanna know humans. Seein' my Tamer try 'n research Digimon so much makes me wonder what's goin' on in your heads a lil' bit too. So, umm... Could ya sit down with me, enjoy some tea 'n maybe... Lemme experience things like I'm a human, or somethin'." A strange request, perhaps even one of the strangest, given how she's a Digimon. Either way, she patiently waits for Kan to join her, the closest thing to a normal smile she can make on her face as she gets someone who works at the establishment to notice her. She then whispers something to them, and shoos said person away, the slightly nervous grin still on her face. "Well, uhh... What's your name? Ain't that how things start?"

Kan blinked for a few moments as the digimon turned a bright red. This was going to be complicated wasn't it? She seemed confused and well... She needed to explain what was going on? Asking him to take a seat and even thanking him for coming here. He'd rub at his neck and slowly take a seat, still gently gripping at that bouquet of flowers.
"...All right. I'm all ears."
Kan would tilt his head and quietly listen to what the other said. So she had lied? That she wasn't her tamer, that her tamer had green hair and loved books. That they were more interested in learning things than other stuff in general. And that this individual sitting in front of him was named Dorothy, her partner. He'd dip his head in a nod and just sort of absorb what she was explaining to him.
She wanted to learn about love and other things? As she was used to being violent and angry... Oh could he relate to that; he felt a small chuckle roll out at the mention of that. He could relate to that pretty hard, his earlier days of the digital world were precisely that.
"Less weird to hear this than you'd expect Dorothy."
His voice was gentle and he seemed pretty relaxed on the whole matter. He wasn't terribly bothered that he had been lied to, normally it'd be frowned upon for this sort of thing. Hell even in the human world this happened more often than not... and the results often weren't really good or the other person having such a pure intent as to just wanting to understand and learn about love.
"Well Dorothy. I can tell you that most people would be upset at this sort of thing. I however am not most people. So I'll certainly indulge you here, it'd be a waste if I didn't!"
He'd chuckle softly and smile softly, offering the bouquet of flowers to her after the person from the establishment had hurried off. He figured he could introduce himself now that they asked.
"Indeed! Along with a few other things. The name's Kan, I'm an engineer by trade. If you've been out by whitewater in the last few months that's where I've set up shop. What about yourself Dorothy? What do you do?"
Being an engineer alone would explain the scarring right? Not that he really wanted to get into that part but if it did get brought up he wouldn't lie. He had to admit that Dorothy had him on the back foot here but he wasn't about to really... well. he wasn't going to be upset at this development. He'd let out a smooth chuckle and shake his head, taking off his suit top so he could sit a little more comfortably. His soft white undershirt now a stark contrast with the rest of him.
"I don't know how good of a teacher about this I am honestly, but I'll try."

"An engineer? At Whitewater?" Dorothy takes the bouquet of flowers somewhat awkwardly, holding it as if she doesn't know what they're for at first, but she does seem to enjoy having them for some reason or another. Perhaps the action itself of getting a gift is enough to calm her nerves. "Ah... Alice told me that an Engineer works with machines like, uhh, vehicles, or somethin' like that.. She's been tryin' to get me all book-smart for some reason... A lotta human stuff weirds me out, 'n she still says I should learn it." She sets the colorful, vibrant flowers on the table delicately and looks directly into Kan's eyes with her own, a light grin on the Witchmon's face as she continues to speak. "Helps me blend in, or something. She's, uhh... Thinkin' a lot 'bout that kinda thing."
"As for what I actually, ya know, do, I like to live it up a lil', experience things Digimon normally don't. The Human world's a pretty, uhh... Interesting place. I mostly just help out Alice... And when I go off on my own I tend to do somethin' different every day." Dorothy explains as a pair of Terriermon deliver plates with a small piece of cake on them, one for Kan, the other for Dorothy. Though they have a little bit of trouble getting the dishes onto the table due to their height, they soon manage, and scamper off. "Alice says it's a lil, uhh... Hedonistic. Botherin' strangers, occasionally getting into trouble... Gyahaha, it's fun, but I know humans ain't so keen on seein' weird stuff happen." She can't help but laugh a little at the determination of the pair who delivered the treat, not out of maliciousness, but simply out of finding them amusing. "Point bein' that I just do whatever when not travelin' with my partner. When we're in the Digital World, she's usually all fixated on researchin' Digimon. She, uhh, once said that Digimon 'n the Digital World are the single most important discovery since, uhh... Ever. Most of what she says flies over my head."
As a pair of forks are delivered by the same pair of Terriermon, Dorothy takes hers from the short Digimon, delicately holding it in her large hands in a slightly awkward manner. She sighs slightly, as if frustrated in how awkward holding such a small object is. "They'll bring coffee soon. Anyways, uhh... Tell me a lil' 'bout relationships, I guess. How do they work?"

"Well just outside of it. I mostly do repairs on things people bring me and stick to my own inventions."
Kan gave a small shrug, he wasn't overly busy thankfully and there was a myriad of other things that always seemed to demand his attention. Of course the digimon seemed to calm down a little bit from recieving the gift and even went into talking about engineers and what her Tamer was trying to teach her. Following suit they used that to try to blend in. Kan would dip his head in a nod and rub at his chin thoughtfully.
"Vehicles, objects, whatever you name it engineers had a hand in it some place. She probably wants you to understand more about humans if that's the case. To be fair you're not the only one that gets weirded out by human stuff. I know a few humans that do too."
The human chuckled and thanked the terriermons as they gave the pair small slices of cake. Alice liked to live a little? Experience things others didn't and tried to do something different every day. Experimenting was the spice of life and the human knew what she meant.
"Well tehre's a lot to see and do in the human world. Just as much here in the digital one. I can't blame you for trying something different. Most of the stuff I do is the same repititious bits, but that's also because humans tend to be creatures of habit. They certainly do freak out if something doesn't fit into their realm of knowledge."
Kan shook his head, getting a small grin. He could only imagine the type of trouble the witchmon got into. She explained further that she just did whatever in the digital world as her partner was researching digimon. Made sense to do so as digimon were one of the more recent discoveries and a very closely guarded secret from those that knew of them.
"So important that we try to keep the knowledge from spreading. It's good to know that someone's trying to research digimon but that's a huge undertaking considering just how much is out there. The digital world is probably one of the most important discoveries I can think of. A new.. step to the future or something like that."
The human would smile down at one of the Terriermons, gingerly taking the fork and spinning it thoughtfully in his hand. He'd blink at Dorothy as she told him they'd bring coffee. Something that he hadn't drank much of as of late. Then she even asked him to tell her about relationships and how they worked.
"Well. Each relationship is different based on the people that are in them. A 'normal' human relationship has a lot of platonic gestures, gifts, and scheduling to sort of spend time with one another. Interests of both parties vary and the other usually takes the time to learn about their partner's in an effort to get closer to them than they already are. It's not uncommon for partners to have similar interests but some of the most healthy ones don't have much in common surprisingly. So it kind of varies. A good strong relationship has a lot of problems, a lot of space management and personality conflicts; so they're more used to issues and can work through them when they arise."
Amusingly the only reason kan even knew about this in the first place was because of the last relationship he had been in... but he wasn't about to bring that up. It'd just leave a sour taste in both of their mouths. He'd calmly take a bite out of the cake using the fork and furrowed his brow.
"Most relationships start from a simple conversation. Long term relationships like boyfriends/girlfriends and Husband/wife or however you want to arrange them come from constant interaction and acceptance of one another in some fashion or another. They tend to be rather gentle from my knowledge and very relaxed. But that... can vary."

It takes a bit for Dorothy to process all this information, the witch intently listening to Kan speak. "So, uhh... What do ya make? Humans have so many gadgets it's kinda... Overwheming." Her mind wanders, going back to some of the things she's seen in the Human World. All manner of moving metal contraptions, electronic devices, and other strange objects... "Bet what ya make is pretty cool, though." She slowly nods her head in agreement at how Alice probably wants her to understand more about humans, finding it an obvious conclusion, if still a bit strange. "It's a lot to take in, 'n kinda... Funny. What's easy for us ain't so easy for you guys. Instead of just bein', like, uhh, born to fit a specific role, you Humans gotta make stuff to be super strong, or be fast, or, umm... Whatever." Whatever she's trying to say doesn't really come out the way she wants, and she falls silent for a bit.
During this silence, she can't help but realize just how little she does understand about Humans. Funny, how both feel completely alien to each other sometimes. "Yeah, last time I went out by myself I, uhh..." Dorothy shakes her head, finding it a slightly embarrassing memory, but one she wants to share for honesty's sake. "Ended up bustin' some box with a bunch of toys inside. Thought there was lil' Digimon in it, uhh..." She laughs awkwardly, looking around as if being judged. "Got a reaaal stern talkin' to after that. There's so much noise, lights 'n stuff goin' on in the Human World it kinda... Messes with your head a lil'."
As the subject changes, she sighs in relief. Not because she doesn't want to talk about it, but that she wants to apologize for being a bit of a troublemaker. "Yeah, yeah, I've got the whole thing 'bout keepin' Digimon secret from people, too. She's with a whole group of other people who wanna research 'n study Digimon. Nerds." Dorothy says the last word with a bit of a lighthearted snicker. "In a good way."
And soon enough the coffee arrives, two reasonably sized cups very carefully served by the pair of Terriermon as they slide a tray onto the table before departing once again, wishing the pair a good day. After this, Dorothy takes her cup, and nods. "So ya could say this is our first date? We've already done the gifts and platonic gestures, and we kindaaa did set up a time 'n place..." She bursts into laughter, a jovial, but slightly harsh sound, quieting herself down after a bit. "Gyahaha! Maybe I'm better at this than I thought."
Her attitude changes slightly when she hears about things sometimes being rough, and she tries to regain her composure. With all the less pleasant moments between her and her Tamer, she feels she can relate to some extent. "But yeah... Shouldn't be too cocky, even if I'm kinda into the more energetic stuff. Kinda feel like I worry people sometimes..."

Kan briefly paused and considered best how to answer what Dorothy asked of him. What did he make that he could easily explain? Something that wouldn't be overwhelming to her. A simple thing could be extended upon and after a few long moments well... He'd have his answer for her!
"Easiest thing I've made was a watch for one of my older customers while the most complicated would be dealing with an andromon's weapon systems in one of his arms."
He hoped that would cover it, or at least put into perspective how much he could work on. He'd manage a small smile as she complimented his things without seeing them. He'd have to show her something of course!
"Well perhaps I could show you something or make you something so you can see how cool it is."
The human tilted his head slightly as she went further into it. She was right in that part, they were after all required to use other things to be stronger. He'd look down at his hands and mull over what she said, looking up quietly as she spoke again. Something about busting up a box with toys inside? He'd raise his eyebrows a bit and then grin slightly as she laughed and continued.
"Sounds like you got a little lost in it. But yeah.. I do agree that the human world has a lot of stuff going on. From the sounds of it there was an automated toy of some kind that you might of heard."
Some toys had motion sensors or were on some kind of autopilot. He could relate to that. It was part of the reason he had moved to the digital world. It was far more tranquil and something that he loved dealing with.
"Part of the reason I moved here I guess."
He'd roll his shoulders quietly and shake his head just a bit. Keeping digimon secret from others was... difficult and in the long run would likely pan out to something that they couldn't manage but he liked hearing that there was a group that was out there wanting to research and study digimon. Though when she called them nerds he couldn't help but raise a brow, following suit with a small chuckle of his own.
"It's good to see that there are others like that out there. Willing to learn about such... well. Fascinating places or people."
Kan would gingerly sip at the coffee, once more thanking the terriermon as they brought them their cups. He seemed rather thoughtful, mulling over something. He felt his face turn a bit hot however at her addressing how this would be a 'first date'. He'd consider it briefly and let out a little laugh following suit.
"I suppose you could say that yes, I got more than I was expecting but that's not a bad thing. Hopefully I didn't startle you too much with my looks or the gift."
He'd slowly shake his head, grinning wider and tending to his coffee for a bit. He'd tilt his head however as she spoke again. How she shouldn't be too cocky, how she worried other people. He'd look down into his cup and sighed.
"Cockiness has its place. As does worrying people. Neither are a bad thing, things can be born of both. But if you think you're worrying people? Talk to them, see what they think. Less harm will come from it. And besides some people like the cockiness, some people like to worry too. Some that's how they care for others after all."
He spoke like he had experience in both and well... he certainly did. It was something bitter to choke down and it was frustrating to think about for a small time frame but it also was... strangely warm. He'd hum a bit and look up at Dorothy.
"But I don't think anyone would judge you for keeping it to yourself or being open for it. Take your path and walk it proud as some would say."

Finally content with all the questions she's asked, the Witchmon leans back and listens for a while, a little concerned that she might be overdoing it, but then again, as her first try, things seem to be going fairly smoothly. She said so herself! She takes a sip of the coffee before speaking again, wincing slightly. If there's one obvious sign of her not thinking things through, it's the fact she doesn't really like the stuff. Something with more sugar's her thing. "Please, show me something! I'm kinda curious as to how human stuff, y'know, works. I, uhh... I'll let you ride with me on my broom in return, ride 'round Rosewood a bit 'n maybe more after we have our, uhh, snack. That's fair, right? Or maybe we should do something more, uhh, normal?" Dorothy's laugh is a bit more awkward than it normally is, perhaps a bit nervous about such a statement. "And yeah, I getcha. Rosewood seems like the closest thing to home I've ever really had."
She soon returns to listening, this exchange of information both something she enjoys, but also something that makes her anxious. So many things to learn... Almost too much. "Well, as I kinda said... She does think it's the most important, uhh... Scientific discovery ever. That said, You're tellin' me to just keep bein' me and things'll work out provided I'm not stupid, 'n I appreciate that." A legitimate smile, something less toothy and more naturalistic, more human, forms on Dorothy's face, the witch Digimon's confidence returning in quick order. "That's the way I like to live life, anyways. Let the world come at me 'n stuff, I'll get what I want from it one way or another... Without bein' too mean 'bout it, of course. Respect ain't something the pits of the Digital World teaches ya, and I'm glad she helped me. uhh... Realize there's more to life than bein' like that."
An embarrassing truth, something that Dorothy has never admitted to her own partner. Perhaps it's best to leave all those past things unsaid and buried.
"It's better to not think too hard 'bout the past like that anyways. Stayin' in the past makes ya unable to move forwards... Somethin' like that. I gotta ask ya, though... Are you a Tamer or like, one of them Spirit Warriors? I don't, uhh... Get it, but I find it kinda cool. Don't worry, not gonna nerd out about it like Alice..."

Kan blinked lightly as Dorothy winced at the coffee. It wasn't super his speed either and he had to admit that if they had the option they probably would of ordered something else. He seemed taken back at the fact that she wanted to see something but with an earnest chuckle he'd draw out his cellphone. Plenty of pictures that he could share with the digimon of work he had done over the last few weeks during his recovery phases.
"Well I've got a few things on here that are images, nothing with me. Didn't think to bring anything. But I can say that if you stopped by my shop outside of whitewater I could show you quite a few things. A broom ride? I wouldn't mind that; never rode on a broom before. More normal? Like what exactly?"
The man tilted his head, sharing the laugh with a amused chuckle.
"Definitely a good home I'd say. Not as uncomfortable as terminus or... well as cramped as some of the other places I've been."
He'd quirk a brow as the digimon explained further. Well he didn't have a problem understanding what she was pushing here, in fact it'd make sense if the digital world was the most important discovery that humans ever made. It outclassed almost everything. He'd clasp his hands around the cup and sigh.
"I'm inclined to agree, nothing beats the majesty of this place. Part of the reason I chose to live in it rather than the human world."
The human returned the smile; dipping his head in a small nod. Honestly it was good to see that sort of smile on someone's face. He always appreciated legitimate emotions and enjoyed it when people were themselves rather than having to hide behind layers of falsehoods.
"Well of course. I tends to work out at least from what I've seen."
Kan nodded sagely as she continued; living ones life like that. Letting the world come at them. It was a way he lived his life for quite some time, but he was happy to also take it in a more lax way. The human leaned slightly and just tilted his head. His brows would raise and then he'd let out a small somewhat embarrassed cough.
"Ah! Yes that's something I can relate to very well. Moving forward is part of the reason I'm alive; I can thank all my friends for that honestly. I was once a tamer, a really long time ago. But now I'm a spirit user. If I had my device on me I'd offer to show you but I do not. My spirit is quite active and I felt like the best way to do this was to leave him at home. Well if you did nerd out it'd be a first for me, I'm not used to people finding things like that particularly interesting. Most of the company I kept were so jaded to it."
The human rubbed his neck, offering a small somewhat cheerful smile. There was a lot of history behind him, a lot of things he had done and a lot of places he had been. The human gave a lengthy pause and took a sip of his coffee before continuing.
"Spose it's just another thing I can show you later, or if you really want we could head over to my shop. Plenty of things we could pick up on the way if you wanted. If not, I wouldn't mind the broom ride. Think I'll fit?"
