Birth Date: December 14th
Western Horoscope: Sagittarius
Birth Place: Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan
Skills & Talents:
☸ Autodidactic Combatant: A self-learned fighter that can more than hold his own, owing this to his near-obsessive fascination with action cinema and an inexhaustible drive to teach himself where all other formal instructors adamantly refuse to.
☸ Ironclad Tenacity: Infuriatingly persistent and diligent, especially when he seeks to accomplish a set goal. Has racked up plenty of hospital bills due to increasing involvement in fights, but his sense of personal integrity always grants him the means, and the motivation, to reimburse any debts in full.[/ul]
Backpack Contents:
☸ Playing Cards: For games like Daifugō or two-ten-jack.
☸ School Supplies: Various, kept in a state of constant clutter.
☸ Digivice: Saruyuki's Digivice, described below.[/ul]
Digivice: The D-Scanner, the model ubiquitous to the Spirit User. Saruyuki's device is a bright yellow tint which evokes the radiance of sunlight, accented with a vibrant red hand grip and screen border.
Personality: The first impression is often the one which lasts the longest, and in the case of Saruyuki Takemitsu, he is routinely mistaken for a delinquent or a low-level grunt in the employ of the criminal underworld due to his blunt manner, solitary inclinations, and an overall unsophisticated way of being; but if neither of these assumptions happen to stick, it is equally likely for him to be perceived as a good-for-nothing bumpkin without any prospects for the future.
Because his set of circumstances prevent Saruyuki from acting on his impulse to simply "fix his problems" the way he actually wants to, he is deeply insecure of his station in life and his relationship with the people he likes or wants to involve himself with, and the lack of sympathy from the general public has spawned within him a hair-trigger temper and a tendency to react against even the pettiest of insults with explosive vitriol. Consequently, such volatile displays of anger cause most people to stay away from Saruyuki, thereby worsening the loneliness he already feels. He is especially susceptible to being compared or contrasted with another species of primate, and takes offense to such remarks with extreme prejudice.
On the opposite side of the coin, these experiences and his exceptionally short fuse have taught Saruyuki the importance of self-sufficiency and independence; he gravitates towards perpetual solitude because, more often than not, it is simply safer for him to keep other people away from his personal struggles and the frustration that these issues bring. If someone were to look beyond the veil and understand Saruyuki's intentions, it becomes swiftly apparent that he displays a remarkably stalwart and profound sense of integrity and good will – if he can help it, he never goes out of his way to cause problems, and will actively try to lend a hand if such a gesture is applicable.
Saruyuki may be ungraceful in regards to social etiquette or involving himself in a public setting, stumbling clumsily where most people would have no such difficulties, but he strives to remain true to himself and keep a good mind in any situation, even if it runs the risk of attracting unwanted attention or pushing away the people he cares about. Such is the price to pay for wanting to better himself the honest way.
Appearance: Saruyuki is about as tall as your average Japanese teenage boy, yet weighs slightly less than one on account of a fast metabolism and healthy eating habits. Years of rigorous personal conditioning and a growing conscious awareness of himself and his limits have also yielded an attractive, toned physique that contributes to Saruyuki's physical strength and stamina; these are made all the more apparent by his naturally blond hair and amber eyes, characteristics that get him mistakenly pegged as a foreigner or a juvenile miscreant.
His sense of fashion is rather modest and plain, reflecting his less-than-stellar upbringing and frugal spending habits, and having such a slender figure enables him to purchase clothes at a discount without needing to fret about blowing all of his money in one spot. Plain shirts and sturdy jeans are about as much style as Saruyuki is willing to entertain, with the exception of a few jackets he wears during the colder months. His two favorite ones are a green denim jacket that he has owned for three-plus years, and a rather nice-looking fur-collared red leather one that Saruyuki found at a thrift store on sale.
It is also common for Saruyuki to spend his time after school in uniform, composed of a navy blue blazer—which he hardly ever wears fully buttoned—and a pair of matching color slacks. When he actually bothers to remember swapping out his shabby tennis sneakers, Saruyuki occasionally slips on a pair of penny loafers that were lovingly issued to him by his paternal uncle.
Jewelry and other accessories are limited to belts only; rings, bracelets, pendants, and similar trinkets do nothing to evoke a sense of pride in Saruyuki's self-image and actually makes him feel bawdy and ineffectual.
Personal History: Born and raised in Sendai without ever knowing the identity of his mother, Saruyuki Takemitsu was brought up a single child by his father Nobuyuki, a destructive alcoholic and a mean-spirited narcissist that used his ex-wife and poor baby Saruyuki as the overarching crux behind the supposed "misfortune" that befell him, and him alone. Were it not for the continued financial intervention of his paternal aunt and uncle, who took pity on Saruyuki's situation yet could not step forward to legally adopt the child out of concern for his early development, it is very likely that he would have never received a formal education.
Perpetually reminded of his existence as a nuisance through his father's drunken tirades, Saruyuki developed a rebellious streak as early as six years old, acting silly and foolish on most days only to lash out vehemently at teachers and students alike whenever an attempt was made to know more about his domestic conditions. He wanted nothing to do with his old man, and when this detail became known at school, Nobuyuki's psychological and emotional abuse slowly became physical once the faculty had informed him of this particular outburst, as he wholly believed Saruyuki to be "just as spoiled and ungrateful as his mother" and felt determined to remind the boy just who was actually responsible for keeping them both afloat.
Three months of living in anguish compelled Saruyuki to run away from home one evening to his aunt and uncle's house, unable to hide his sadness any longer but still too afraid to reveal the truth if it meant provoking Nobuyuki's wrath. Allowed to spend the night on the condition that he would return home the next day, Saruyuki stayed up watching the classic 1973 martial arts action film, Enter the Dragon, which was part of his uncle's personal movie collection.
Although the film was certainly old-fashioned and lacked the cutting-edge special effects of modern ones, Saruyuki's observation of the fighting techniques performed by the legendary Bruce Lee triggered a spark of interest that soon swelled into a burning passion for both action films and the martial arts, inspirations that not even his father Nobuyuki could ever hope to extinguish. But, lacking the money necessary to receive formal instruction, it became apparent to Saruyuki that he could only learn to defend himself if he did so on his own – and only if he was bound and determined to continue resisting his old man's delusions of superiority.
Days turned to weeks, which quickly became months, and eventually years would pass as Saruyuki cultivated his knowledge of self-defense through the films he spent all of his free time indulging in, watching them over and over as he practiced each move and technique with the ultimate aim of bettering himself. He would memorize entire scripts, act out whole scenes, commit whole choreographed movements into synapses that could be recalled through his own instincts.
Eventually, Saruyuki's obsession with action films entered the realm of public awareness, leading many of his school peers to assume that he was falling into the wrong crowd or took to fighting in the streets as a means of coping with his father's abuses. The very worst of these speculations illustrated Saruyuki as a bully and a delinquent who fought others of his ilk for money and status, a gangster-in-the-making. What little expectations they had for Saruyuki's future had all but vanished completely.
But this is fine – all of this is okay now. Saruyuki has acquired the confidence his father refused to help him develop, and has learned how to roll with the punches in more ways than just the literal. He keeps to himself, fully aware of the erroneous reputation that lingers above and behind his shoulders and capitalizing on it whenever the situation may allow him to. Until the day opportunity comes a-knockin', patience and tenacity remains the greatest virtues he has in his growing arsenal of talents.
