Rei had finally got out of school after a long day, and even felt longer considering how it started. At the moment she woke up and got ready to school-- she heard the arguments go on again. Her mother and older brother, Ryuji. They argued more and more than they ever did now.
It had been a year or so since her father died as a pilot for the space program. Rei always looked up to him, and despite his profession as a pilot and astronaut, he was a hero to her-- and a loving father. He had plenty of time to spend with them, see them grow up and treat his children like the lights of his life. To hear he was gone was heartbreaking to Rei, as it was to them all.
Since then, being around the house had grown hard when her Mother was around. She had become distant, always working and rarely at home with a new job in a form of computer science. Her brother, had become less reliable regarding school as he would skip or go out to do his own things. She was worried about him more than ever, but even so he wouldn't admit to needing help or anything. So those rare moments when her mom and brother was in the same room, you could bet the tension would grow.
She couldn't get out of the house fast enough.
School was never an issue for her. In fact she enjoyed going there. She made friends and got along well with the other students and teachers. To her, school was more welcoming than her empty home. Though she kept a smile on her face, she couldn't help the weight of loneliness on her shoulders as she would go back to her home in Shibuya.
Deciding to take her time, Rei sat herself down on a bench that overlooked the Shibuya crossing. Anything she could do to keep herself from having to go home so soon.
Her school, being in grade school, had no real clubs or groups for her to join beyond the music club that happened during classes. Beyond that, she felt her life empty as she sadly sat there. A beep came on her phone as she soon looked down and picked it up. It was a text from her mother as she opened it.
"I am on call again tonight. Don't wait up for me for dinner. Order whatever you want on the card and I'll call you in the morning. Please make sure your brother comes home for dinner too."
She was both sad and annoyed by the message. She remembered when her mother was nothing short of kind and sweet. Now she became so distant it was like she was a stranger, consumed by this new job, and she wouldn't even discuss it in detail.
She sighed as she slacked her arm down. She had not ordered anything in a while-- as she had taken up cooking to help take care of her brother and herself. Even now though, she was exhausted and might just do that.
Rain began to drizzle down, a small fog that made her cooler to ease her anxiety. The small bits of rain helped hide the small tear that rolled down her eye.
