Somewhere inside the Digi-World, an old tall man was on the edge of a cliffside with the eternal blue ocean surrounding the little piece of land he was standing on. He would have been alone if it wasn't from the ever-dancing breeze in his short blond hair and his partner in his holosuit by his side. Demi was now in the form of a young adult next to a much older Desmond now. They have been here before, they knew it very well. Well, not exactly in this situation. But how come they ended up here again, that they weren't so sure. It wasn't unusual for Desmond and Demi to come into this Digital world. They often came here with each other trying to find something they had no clue of what it would be. There was something that made them come inside this world days after days. A heavy sigh came out of the tamer's mouth as his left hand went to adjust his glasses. Looking out there, at that forever blue pool of water.
Desmond and the DemiMeramon spent a few hours here, without anything but that small island and that one broken tree. The sun was slowly setting behind the two of them with the broken tree casting a rather small shadow between the Digimon and his tamer. There was something different. Traveling from places to places was easy, long sometimes but not difficult to do. There used to be much more space around that tree. Now, it was all fragmented. How come this world shattered into this, that he didn't know too. The two friends would stay silent for a bit longer just looking at the horizon as the sun came down.
After a while, Demi would look at his tamer and smile. "Sunset and next to the water." He said while laughing softly. "Some things never change, do they?" That question also made the human laugh. "Yes, we are not very imaginative, are we?" Desmond answered with another question. "You always liked the sun." It was true. Maybe because he too was made of fire. "I think you prefer the night though." That made the Frenchman laughed some more. "I like the stars. They never seemed to be lonely." He paused for a second before talking. "Unlike the sun. Poor thing has no one to shine next to it." That was one way of seeing it. "I think that he feels so alone, that's why he tries to be as big as possible." Desmond pointed at the darkening sky above them with his left hand. "The stars? They all shine evenly. They don't try to outshine the others."
"You never liked standing out." Demi spoke while looking up. "I'm pretty sure you would have loved to be able to turn invisible." Desmond lowered his hand and laughed again. "Maybe, don't you?" The Digimon stood up and offered a hand for his good friend to grab. "Come on, old man." Desmond smiled looking at his partner that was almost as tall as he is now. And of course, his Holosuit looked a lot like himself when they were much younger. "I'm sure you are happy to never get old, young one." Standing up with the help of his partner, the blond tamer sighed. He spent so much time here that he forgot how old he was now. "It has its perks."
"Remember when we first met?" Desmond then asked before stretching his arms. "Of course." Demi answered with a smile. "I was trying to eat your cellphone." The two laughed at that memory. "Yes, you did. Yes, you did. Also, you ate most of my food." The older man would then walk toward the broken tree and use his hand to dust the fallen trunk before sitting down. "Already tired of standing up? You used to hate sitting down." The Frenchman rolled his eyes. "Says the one that has no legs." Indeed, being a DemiMeramon, he would be floating. But in this form, he could feel the ground. Which was always a bit strange but he got used to it. He also had to admit that he kind of like having legs. He could run and jump all day long. "Feel free to sit down whenever."
This time, it was Demi who sighed. "You are making me worry about you." It was true. He knew very well that unlike him, the human won't be here forever. The Digimon in disguise would turn around to look at the sun that completely disappeared giving darkness take his place. "Hey, there's the full moon tonight." Desmond lean back a bit and lifted his head up. "I wonder if she is jealous of the stars. And I bet that she is a bit on the shy side, only showing herself completely only once in a while." After spending so many nights under the stars, the human was still not a hundred percent sure if they were the same constellations that they could see in the real world. Maybe they changed every night, he never really tried to memorize their position.
"Are we going to stay here for one more day?" Demi then asked as he made his way toward his old friend and sit down. "I think we should go back home now. Not like we can go anywhere." Desmond sighed. He knew that his partner was telling him the truth. Looking down at his old shoes, the blond tamer would softly begin tapping the down. "But what if we can't go back here?" He turned his head to look at the Digimon. "I mean, we don't know what happened to the rest of this world. What if everyone is stuck on those small islands like us? Or are we the only one left?"
"You think too much, Desmond. You always did." The DemiMeramon also began tapping with his feet mimicking the human. He always wanted to be just like the blond human. "I know that you are scared. I am too, you know?" Desmond sighed again. He wasn't sure if Demi was afraid of anything. He has always been that ball of energy with childlike amazement at everything. To be honest, there was a time when he was jealous of that. He never really felt like the world was something amazing and that everything was going to be okay. "But I prefer to be with you, even if it means never coming back here." Pausing for a second, he placed a hand on his friend's shoulder. "I was born here, but that doesn't mean that it's my home. My home is and will always be where you are." He smiled broadly and began tapping his shoulder. Desmond sighed once more and looked at Demi's smile. A single tear fell down his face.
"Are you crying?" Demi then said out loud while laughing. He placed both hands in front of his mouth. "You are crying!" The Frenchman quickly went to wipe that tear away. "Very funny, haha." the human said with a deadpan tone. He then began laughing as well. "I can't stay mad at you, silly boy." To this, the Digimon stuck out his tongue. "Of course, I'm very lovable." Rolling his eyes, Desmond would then look at the ground in front of him.
"Do you really not mind not being able to come here ever again?" The blond asked after a moment of silence. Demi also looked down and cross his arms. "I... I'm not sure." He said before taking a deep breath. "I don't even remember anything before meeting you. Sure, I can't be who I'm really am in yours, ours, place." A few seconds of silence took place. "But you know, this isn't the same world I knew from what I've been with you. It's broken now. Just a dead place." Desmond wasn't entirely sure if he was feeling the same. Maybe it was just him, but he felt like he was the one that wouldn't be able to move on. "And besides, if we are the only ones left here, I see no need to stay."
"We had good memories. A few of them around that broken tree." Right now, Desmond knew that his partner was much wiser now. Maybe wiser than himself. The old man yawned and bent forward to rest his elbows on his legs. "We did have good ones." Demi also imitated the older man and rested his elbows on his legs. "I think you are more afraid than I am, Desmond." He said softly almost whispery. The human would slowly nod but not say anything. "Don't get me wrong. I would love to stay here too, but not in this state. It's not my home anymore, I don't need it. Not anymore."
Desmond was always thinking about how he would feel if all that would happen in his world that he was sure that Demi would feel the same. Having to leave a home without a proper goodbye. His eyes then moved to look at the ocean. Yes, he was the one that needed that goodbye, not Demi. "Desmond." Demi called his name to get his full attention. The tamer turned his head to face the Digimon. "It's okay. I'm ready to go." A heavy sigh came out of Desmond's mouth. "I..." And Demi placed a hand on his shoulder again. "I know." He simply said. And to be frank, that was all he needed to say.
"How about we stay, just a bit longer?" The DemiMeramon nodded and gave him a good pat on his back. "Take your time, old man." And the two of them laughed. "No need to remind me, that greying hair is enough." Demi chuckled. "You hair is so blond that I can't even tell that you have grey hair, to begin with!" Desmond quickly passed a hand in his short hair. "Trust me, I see them every morning." They would start laughing again and they would do so for a while, just laughing. The human felt much younger now. Having Demi at his side was maybe the best thing that ever happened to him. They make a good duo. "Thanks."
"You are welcome!" Demi swiftly said before Desmond could say anything else. After that, they would both stay silent but smiling for a long while. "Well, I guess it's now or never." The old man said as he reached for his Digivice. The strange little device was now well worn with the colors faded a bit. He turned the Digivice around to see its back revealing a small sun with a smile crudely carved on it. Taking a second to gently brush his fingers on the carving, Desmond began laughing to himself. "Do you remember this, Demi?" He would ask without looking at him. "Of course! You were so afraid that the drawing would go away so you decided to carve it with a pocket knife."
"I guess we won't need it anymore. Once we go home." There was a certain sadness in his voice. Demi sighed and placed his arm around him. "Think of it as being a trophy." He said joyfully. "Best tamer ever!" The Digimon shouted out loud before hugging the blond human. Desmond would laugh and then sigh. Turning the device once more, the Frenchman placed his thumb on one of the buttons and then lifted his head to look at the horizon one last time. Demi would also turn his head to look at the same direction. "Any last words?" Demi asked before standing up. The tamer would also stand up and then press a combination of buttons and the screen lit up. A swirling portal appeared a few inches next to the two friends.
"I don't do last words, Demi." Desmond would then reached out to hold his partner's hand and place the Digivice in it. "You can have it. For being the best partner ever." The DemiMeramon held on to the device and moved his hand to where his heart is. "How about we both keep it? After all, we will still be together, old man." Both of them took a deep breath and looked at each other with a smile. "Ready?"
"Yes."
