The doors to the royal throne room flung open and a booming howl of laughter echoed through the king's chambers. Sweat dropped down his brow. The king hadn't wanted to resort to this. He had sent mercenary after mercenary after mercenary to the obsidian caverns. They had all perished. Now, on his last limb, the king had resorted to insane measures. He couldn't bear the thought of his daughter being captured and held prisoner by the dragon dwelling there, but was it really worth hiring this particular knight? Everyone in the realm had heard the name Sir Pepper, the Ape Knight. The golden suit of armor was now standing before the royal, underneath which was one of the most infamous warriors of their day. Though he wasn't sinister per say, he was known to be rather... eccentric.
The knight remove his helmet. His features were just as people described, certainly human, but with a hint of simian. His blonde hair was wild, and he grew out a shaggy beard and mustache on his unusual face. A large scabbard was attached to his back, with an equally large sword sheathed within it. One of the kings guards looked at him expectantly.
Sir Pepper raised an eyebrow at the royal knight.
"Most people bow in the presence of royalty," sneered the guard.
A smile spread across the golden knight's face. "Well? I'm here, so I suppose you should bow! Eheeeheheheeehee," the irreverent knight slapped his gauntlet against his ironclad stomach, the clanging accenting his brutish laugh in a way that irritated the royal guard to the point of a grimace. "Listen Your Highness," he said to the king, "I am willing to rescue your daughter from the dark dragon of the obsidian caverns, but as we both know, nothing comes for free. You mentioned in your missive you were willing to pay whatever cost necessary, but I'd like to ask what sort of payment are we talking here?"
The King sighed, "My daughter is very dear to me. I would give anything up to get her back. Money, land, troops, women, anything your heart desires is yours if you can save her from the caverns."
Pepper raised an eyebrow, "What about if I want to be king?"
The question was met with gasps by others in the room. The king was silent for a moment in thought, and finally responded, "If that's what it takes, I would grant you my throne."
The Ape-Knight went back to his howling laughter, and as he calmed down, a tear fell from his eye. "Alllright, your highness. I can see that this broad is pretty important to you, so how about I offer you this? I'm gonna head down to the caverns. I'm gonna rip that beast's head off, get your daughter back, and then we can talk payment after I get back, deal?"
The king agreed, and Sir Pepper turned to leave. He waved his silver haired companion with the lute to follow him. Sir Pepper and his page, Salt, were off on another adventure
The two arrived at the cavern after many hours of travel. They trekked through dense forest, Pepper swinging his mighty blade, chopping down bushes, and blatantly ignoring the winding trail in favor of saving time. The mouth of the dark cavern was completely jet black, and glistened in the sunlight. This was the obsidian cavern, home of the mythical Sword Beast, a dragon whose claws were so sharp that they could cut through stone. Salt's typical vacant expression was present on this quest, and he opened his mouth to pose a question to Sir Pepper. "So what do you think you're gonna ask for from the king once we down this monster?"
Sir Pepper gave a shooing motion to his companion, and began to descend into the pit. He was "in the zone" and wouldn't have Salt interrupting his preparation for battle against the monster. Salt gave a sigh in protest, but followed his liege down into the depths, anxious to see what sort of power this alleged Sword Beast possessed.
As they went deeper into the cavern, they saw horrific markers of what had once been attempted. Older attempts consisted of skeletons and armor strewn about by the wind and by whatever monster made this place its dwelling. More recent attempts had resulted in knight's bodies becoming barbecued, singed past the point of recognition, and steel armor blackened. Notably, many pieces of armor had been pierced through their armor and all the way through their bodies. It seems the legends were true. Pepper was looking at one of the poor chaps when Salt shouted, "Master, look out!"
Pepper ducked, and black tail fringed with hard silver metal passed over his head. He looked up to find a massive, black dragon with glistening silver on his claws, wings, and tail. Steam was leaking from its open maw and its nostrils, and it stared down at the knight with beady eyes. Brave as he was, Pepper charged at the beast, attempting to lodge its sword in the beast. Pure foolishness, he was knocked aside by a blow from the creatures front right paw. He found himself on his back, slumped against a wall, when a steel-tipped tail came flying towards him like a savage arrow. Instincts sharp as a tack, he clapped his hands together and caught the beast's tail, and began a struggle with his superhuman strength against the inhuman power of the Sword Beast. "Salt! A little help!"
Salt sighed again, and began to play his lute while reciting an ancient verse, "Nomete ot evlovigid!" and Pepper began to feel strength coursing through his body. His already remarkable muscles began to ripple with even more power and he put strain through his body in order to lift the dragon off the ground and toss him across the cavern. He ran over to his sword, picked it up, and with lightning fast reflexes, threw it at the dragons eye, lodging it deep within its cranium.
As the dragon drew its last breath and slumped over, Pepper collapsed to the ground. Salt walked over with a girl who looked like she had been held captive by a dragon for a week. "So what are you going to ask the king for when we get back?"
Pepper groaned, "I could go for a massage."
