MPC Name: I am the Shadow, the True Self MPC Number: 65A Reward Requested: Bits AUTHOR'S NOTE: So this started out as "This is a darker path that David could have gone down if circumstances were different" and that seemed 'shadow-self' enough to count, though a bit tangential. Upon writing, it started to drift more and more towards a true alt-reality thing. I know that wasn't the prompt, so if this doesn't count that's cool. I'll probably keep writing, though, cause I like where it's going.
David Lee Copeland Paradox space. A truly turbulent medium where everything that is, has been, will be or could have been, collide and coalesce. A place where canon and non-canon exist simultaneously, concurrently, and supplementarily. Despite containing all possibilities real and unreal, relevant and irrelevant, essential and non-essential, possibility is not limitless. As all things eventually do, even time itself comes to an end at some point. In any given being's life, they make a limited number of choices that would create new realities. So, while unfathomably large, the permutations of the self that can be encountered here are finite.
As well, there are some personal aspects that will never change throughout every instance of reality. Take David Copeland, for example. The one we see here may have a starkly different appearance, but at his core, he is the always the same good boy who will take the time and chance to do what is right, no matter the cost to himself. He will always be a Chosen Child of Truth and, in any reality where he becomes a tamer, will always be paired with a ModokiBetamon.
You find yourself here by grievous choice, willingly but wishing you had any other option available. In your world, a being known as Daemon and his Dark Masters have rapidly expanded their territory across not just one, but two Digital Worlds. They have rewritten Yggdrasil and quite literally seized the means of reproduction. Only one bastion remains among the split worlds: The walled city of Edenhope. It is here that your world's remaining heroes have gathered for their last stand against a monster who has absorbed more data than anyone thought possible for one mon to contain. Before that happens, you have a task to undertake. You need to ascend to your Ultimate Self, or at least as close as possible. Thanks to the self-sacrifice of the town's guardian Clockmon, you have been sent to this place beyond time for that purpose.
The Ultimate Self is a nebulous concept at best, and pure abstraction at worst. Basically, the fewer instances of yourself that exist across all realities, the more pronounced those core traits of the remaining are, assuming they have realized them consciously. Your relation to Truth is tenuous, and you have come here to eliminate other versions of yourself so that you can gain a tighter grasp on it. The plan is to gain control over the concept of Truth and force a victory. Daemon's fall to you and your comrades outside Edenhope will be a single point of uncontested Truth in the world, and you will make it so.
To be honest, you sort of hate this plan. It means killing several versions of yourself. Other yous with lives and families. With futures. But you cannot concern yourself with that. Yours is the canon reality. Yours is the only reality that is true, essential, and relevant. That makes your task more important. This, at least, is what you keep telling yourself as you drift through the Incipisphere, watching and awaiting an encounter with yourself. After all, a lie told enough times cements itself as truth in the mind of the one saying it. ❝I am the one you should fear the most I am the one who will bring you down As long as I exist there's hope for the world❞

It is currently the middle of the night, and you sleep upon the bed of your recently acquired pirate ship. It is not the most comfortable thing. Old springs poke at your back and sides as the ship slowly rocks back and forth among the waves of the Digital Sea. The thought had occured to you to just Digiport your way home every night like Amelie did, but this was part of the experience, you told yourself. Your companion and friend, the ModokiBetamon Ziggy, sleeps on his stomach against your chest as your arm wraps lightly around him. Right now, despite the discomfort, you are in a deep slumber. Possibly the deepest you have ever been.
You feel like you are floating through a haze of old memories in bubbles, surrounded by vast nothing, but every one of them is blurry and unrecognizable. Any time you try to focus on one, it moves past your vision and disappears before you can place it. Eventually, you settle down on some ground and feel a distinct POP from around your body. Were you in a bubble of some sort? After it disperses, your surroundings become more clear. You find yourself in a familiar area. This is the field next to French Middle School back in your home town. Had you not had to uproot and move to Shibuya, this is where you would have been going in a couple of years.
You used to live near here. In fact, you can see your old house just down the street. You have never been inside the school before, but there is a tennis court next to it, flanked by both the school and the large open field you find yourself in now. You begin the look around the place. It seems empty, but that is fairly normal. Unless it is right before or after school, there is rarely anyone around. Yet this feels almost too empty. There are no cars in the school parking lot, nor any in the street or driveways of the many houses within sight. Nobody being at the school could be explained away by it being Summertime. It was incredibly hot right now, after all, but what about everywhere else? You know your family always parked their cars in the garage, so not seeing their vehicles wasn't all that odd. But did everyone else around here? You honestly can't remember having ever paid attention to that detail before. Maybe that was normal.
Without much thought of anything else to do, you begin to walk down the slight incline towards the road, and towards your house. Suddenly, you hear another POP from behind you. It is the same sound of the popping dream bubble that brought you here. You turn around and see facing you, maybe twenty feet away, a familiar face. But what is familiar about it? You can saw with certainty that you have never seen this person before, but you also are acutely aware that you know them. He looks to be about the same age as you, and bares a shirt that you truly wish you had in your collection; a cartoon-style rendering of the Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue crew posing with their blasters, helmetless. You are very jealous. At his feet is a small amphibious being that you recognize as a ModokiBetamon. Not just any ModokiBetamon, but YOUR ModokiBetamon.
"I don't like this, David."
You look straight down towards the source of the voice. It is your good friend and companion, Ziggy, your ModokiBetamon. He has been by your side this whole time. But why hadn't you realized it until now? You are certain he has been at your feet since you escaped the bubble you started in. Everyone is searching for a world where they belong. David Lee Copeland How long had you been drifting? You aren't sure. Time is very hard to keep track of here. It could have been days, months, or even mere minutes. Even your body's internal clock doesn't seem to be working right. You guess it's no matter. Clockmon had promised that no matter how long it took, you'd be back before Daemon's seige. Finally, you spot a familiar sight. It's that field near where you used to live.
As soon as you touch down on the soft grass, a figure turns toward you. It's you. Not you you, but a different you. You have to say this isn't what you expected. You expected to come face to face with a doppelganger, but this boy was neither blond nor blue-eyed. He didn't share your build. At first, you think maybe you have made a mistake, but that is impossible. Three things pop out as distinct to you. First, the absolute curiosity in his eyes is one hundred percent familiar. You've made that face too many times. Second is the ModokiBetamon by his side. It is certainly yours. Last but not least is his attire. Blue jeans with a black tee depicting every single Ranger helmet through Ninja Steel in even rows of six. You are very jealous. No doubt you have found your first target of many.
You take a deep breath and exhale slowly through pursed lips. Despite all the mental preparations you had done, now that you are face to face with a version of yourself that you have to kill, it all seems so difficult. You stand, momentarily paralyzed, staring down a confused little boy as you steel yourself for what must be done. You feel sorry for your alternate self. He has none of the coldness in him that you do. He is what could have been if you hadn't been embroiled in so much conflict. Of course, you are probably that to him, as well. A shadow of the person he could eventually become.
"Let's get this over with Modoki." You were not terribly creative when you first started calling your partner by his species name instead of giving him a proper name. However, it is long past time for that sort of thing. Besides, he hasn't complained about it yet. Instead, your partner just nods in hesitant agreement and begins moving forward as electricity crackles around his whole body, building to a crescendo. After a few feet, Modoki jumps forward and does a front flip in the air, releasing all the charge he had just built up. Lightning cascades along the ground in a mostly straight line towards the alternate David and Ziggy, causing diminutive tufts of dirt to crack and explode as the grass burns. ❝I am the one you should fear the most I am the one who will bring you down As long as I exist there's hope for the world❞

It's difficult for you to parse what was happening before you were under attack by....yourself? No, but close enough. Luckily your friend here was already on the defensive. Ziggy focuses on a piece of ground in front of him and activates his Aqua Tower.
Electricity isn't something that can be tangibly attacked or pushed away, but it can be redirected. That directional alteration is exactly what your partner wanted to achieve here. Water began to bubble under the grass, but there was no spout that emitted from the ground like normal. Instead, this one was pointed below ground, at about a fifteen-degree angle back towards their aggressors. As the technique pushed away and compressed the loose dirt and mud, it created a sort of underground puddle. Electricity will always take the path of least resistance, and water, while not a terribly reasonable conductor, does so better than all the loose dirt, grass, and air. This means that when the electric attack got to the point where Ziggy's attack had been created, it instead moved downwards and, most importantly, harmlessly away from you and your partner.
You may not understand everything happening right now, but one thing is clear. You are under attack by someone very similar to yourself. Gah. It's that thought again. How exactly do you know this is you? The only similarity is that he also has a ModokiBetamon. And yet that's how you see this other David. There it is again. You know his name is your name. Why? It's like how sometimes in a dream you have knowledge that you aren't sure where you got it, but you know it is true. Were you dreaming? It is certainly possible, considering all the circumstances. However, it all feels far too real. Like you know that there are real consequences for what happens here. Again, something you know that you don't know how you know. It's all too much for your brain to handle, so you decide to stop thinking about it. You are under attack.
Ziggy didn't launch any sort of counter. Instead, he just stood his ground directly in front of you. Your own personal frog knight. He began to spark and crackle with electricity. Wild and chaotic bits arced all over his small body, building up for something big. You have never seen him quite this tense, or this electrified. Just how much energy can your partner generate?
"Who are-?" You abruptly cut yourself off. There is no need to ask that question. You already know the answer. "What are-?" Nope. Try again, buster. Keep working through those 5 Ws of questioning and maybe you'll find the right inquiry. "Why are you doing this? We haven't done anything to you." You are somewhat afraid of the answer. Is it possible you also have an inkling of the truth behind that question, too? Not particularly wanting to get caught up in something so dangerous, you shift your weight on your feet a bit, intending to turn and run if this doesn't end up going well.
