Katsura let out an annoyed sigh when it turned out Unica-tan had disappeared while she was talking to Duffer.
It only got more annoying when Duffer, admittedly rightfully, started panicking.
"Sigh... and that's why I can't leave her alone." And somehow Katsura was now the one everyone looked at, Duffer outright asked her.
"Uhm-"
Before Katsura could think of an answer, Kotemon interrupted her. Clearly, Duffer wasn't fit for thinking on his feet and Kotemon barely got him rational so she turned to Nyao instead.
"Nyao... you're a cat." "I am?" Nyao asked teasingly.
"Not now please... Just... smell her out for me." And so Nyao jumped off and started to sniff around. Nyao walked underneath several tables resulting in Katsura apologizing repeatedly. Eventually Nyao had been leading Katsura towards the streets where they met a FanBeemon.
"Excuse me, uhm sir?.. Ma'am?... Have you seen a small human child with blonde hair?"

The FanBeemon had not expected to be approached by a BlackGatomon and human girl, but he voiced no objection to being stopped in the middle of the street. "Yes?" he asked, a slight buzz sounding in the back of his throat as he spoke, "What is it?" It was then that Katsura asked if he'd seen "a small human child with blonde hair." He took a moment to consider it before nodded. "Ah, yes. Not too long ago. She was pretending to be a bee, I think. She went that way," he explained while nodding down the street, toward a shady alleyway. Though crime was not generally permitted in Terminus City, some Digimon got away with questionable things in the dark, abandoned places, out of sight and out of mind from law enforcement. There was no telling if Unica was currently in danger, but if she continued to wander around without guidance, it was only a matter of time. As if to emphasize this point, the FanBeemon added, "You'd better hurry. It looked like she was headed toward Old Terminus."

Duffer returned, knocking down the Digitamamon who'd worked so hard to get back up, accepting to just stay on the floor for a while. Before he could say or do anything else stupid, Katsura came up with a good idea, sending the cat out to search for her. "Oh. I didn't know she could...?" Duffer cut himself off as they followed the two. Eventually they ran into a FanBeemon, an unusual creature, even to the jaded Kotemon and the fairly experienced Duffer.
"No Katsura, this is why humans need digimon." Kotemon responded to the FanBeemon's worries in response to her earlier statement. The boy ran ahead, far faster than what Katsura had seen him back on his wheelchair. Adrenaline mixed with his runner's genes sent the boy flying into the dark alley. "Unica!" he shouted as the kotemon tried to keep up. "Stupid short legs..." The mon mumbled before snapping its fingers. "Boy, wait up! If I digivolve we can search faster and quicker." Duffer didn't seem to hear though, he was busy running and jumping over trash cans and climbing fences until he paused to take a breath.
"Unica!" He repeated his shout, hoping to get a response to point him the right way.

"Oh thank you sir. Where?" Katsura bowed relieved to know someone found her, then heard out. Katsura heard Kotemon repeating her own words back, this indeed was why you needed partners to keep yourself safe Katsura was certain. However, everything about Katsura changed the moment she heard the sentence "Old Terminus". At first Katsura froze in place allowing Duffer to outspeed her despite the head start.
"Oh no... Um sir please excuse us for a moment." Nyao said albeit worried but not really surprised. Finally Katsura started to move somehow by rigidly putting her hand behind Nyao to grab her own chest because it was starting to hurt. Aside from that Katsura hadn't moved at all and now she stopped moving again. Purple smoke was starting to leak from Katsura and into her digidevice. Eventually a word came into Katsura's head from kotemon: "digivole", that word manifested in Katsura's mind as an order and the smoke came out from the digidevice now as a beam homing towards Nyao.
"Blackgatomon dark warp digivole... Hah no focus." Nyao was able to forcefully expel some of the smoke just as she was starting to sprout gargantuan wings, instead she shrunk into a more familiar angelic form.
"Ladydevimon." Nyao the Ladydevimon brushed off the smoke, you may expect this fallen angel to ran berserk but instead she just turned around looking at Katsura.
"Katsura..." For a moment Unica-tan wasn't important to Nyao instead she kneeled before Katsura and opened her arms and embraced Katsura.
"I know... Piedmon isn't coming back. But right now Unica-tan needs you." "I... Need you too." "You don't need Ladydevimon or that... thing... for this, you're much stronger than you think you are." Katsura started hugging Nyao back.
"Now close your eyes and breathe out, try to calm down." Katsura complied and as the she did the smoke and the angel disappeared, all that was left was an ashamed girl with a cat in her arms and a tear in her closed eye.
Only now as she slowly carried Nyao into the alley did she notice Duffer.
"Oh... I guess I owe you an explanation?"

Unica was too far gone to hear the pandemonium ensuing back in the heart of the city, and fortunately for her, she didn't bear witness to the unsettling scene that unfolded between Katsura and Nyao. The purple smoke, the glazed-over look in the girl's eyes, the forced digivolution. It would've been enough to scare Unica off the idea of Digimon altogether. Those in the streets nearby, however, saw everything and watched on in horror. The FanBeemon fluttered backwards, giving the girl a wide berth and joining a handful of passersby in a wary circle around the young tamer. Law enforcement was undoubtedly nearby, ready to move if things started to get out of hand. The situation didn't escalate any more than that -- much to the city-goers' relief -- as a LadyDevimon rushed up to Katsura, spoke quietly, and hugged her tamer in a warm embrace. After a few uneasy moments, Nyao devolved back into her feline form and together they walked solemnly into the alley FanBeemon had directed them toward, where Duffer and Kotemon had already disappeared into.

Duffer backed away from the tall, intimidating woman who gave way to Katsura and Nyao, breathing deeply as he tried to process what exactly happened. Kotemon, however, seemed non-plussed, although in reality, he did seem concerned about why Katsura looked bothered. "The hell was that?" he was shaking now. "Digivolution, she became a LadyDevimon. The real question is why she stopped." The masked digimon said, trying to calm the boy down. "LadyDev-" "LadyDevimon, a powerful Virus Digimon whose seductive and dangerous natur- just, nevermind. What's important is that we need to help." The mon pointed to Katsura's tear, and the boy shakily approached.
"Kat? Are you alright?" He asked in response to her 'explanation' line.

Well the cat was out of the bag and there was no way back from that episode. While walking with Duffer, Katsura was starting to come up with words.
"So... This isn't the first time you and I helped a girl like Unica-tan out isn't it... I love the digital world I do but... I can't lose any more friends to this street... Last time I was here Piedmon one of my closest friends died and no... He won't come come back... I know I could have saved him if I just... I donno." While Katsura was distracted by her own words Nyao sadly shocked her head before Duffer, no Katsura couldn't stop him from dying. Katsura showed Duffer, and by extension Kotemon her necklace, Katsura is the owner of the crest of loyalty.
"I don't get it... I'm supposed to be "loyalty" but... Every time I think of Piedmon... And this place... It hurt... Then my digidevice get weird... I miss him... You know... I used to be scared of this world... Demon Lords... Reapers... But every time Nyao was there." Katsura hugged Nyao tightly.
"What if I can't protect Nyao? What if something happened to her? I can't imagine not doing everything together with her..." "Ugh you might soon find out!"
"Oh sorry"
Katsura loosened her grip to the relief of Nyao.
"Funny thing about those digidevices... they run on feelings..."

Duffer waited for his friend to explain, silently nodding the whole time. "Kat..." He went silent again as she showed him the necklace. He had no clue what it was, although Kotemon looked wide-eyed. "Kat, whatever happened." He put his hand on her shoulder. "You're my friend now. And it's going to be both of us fighting, not just you." Then she finally hit the part that hit him the closest: what if she can't protect Nyao?
"I... did I ever tell you why I was in that wheelchair? I... it was a few years ago, during the attack in the shopping mall. I was helping some kids when the roof collapsed. I almost died, and was put into a coma. Kotemon almost lost me because I tried to do the right thing." He carefully pushed her crest back to her. "But if I'd have done nothing I'd live knowing that someone could've gotten hurt even worse than I did. When we were in the forest, you weren't scared of the ghost, even with me or another friend following you. The world is scary, Kat. There's horrible, awful things, but if we don't do anything to help, Unica might go through what you're going through, or worse... I'm not a psychologist, or a person who's good at talking, or even all that smart... but I am a friend, and even if I'm dumb as bricks, I'm willing to do anything to stop you from hurting."

It was nice to hear someone who cared about Katsura enough to help even if she herself didn't understand why it hurt like that. The reason why Duffer was in the wheelchair sounded very logical in Katsura's mind.
"I'll do anything for Nyao... Anything" The part with the consequences on Duffer seemed to fly over Katsura's head but not Nyao who was actually looking worried for Katsura.
"That's why Katsura don't get to know the other parts of here" Nyao whispered to Kotemon. Nyao was seriously worried about letting Katsura fully explore the digital world instead only letting her know few portions deemed safe. Katsura reattached the necklace and heard Duffer out.
"One time I was in the digital world, a human girl walked up to me and just marked me her slave... I said no as you see, then things got... A little bit out of control." If Duffer opened up the least Katsura could do to return the favor was sharing something of her own past.
"The good thing about streets is they're straight lines. Unica-tan must be here... Somewhere."

Kotemon shook its head. "If we don't make our humans strong, they'll never be able to survive without us. All those times leading my boy through the deserts for runs, to the training camps for exercise, to all these locations were to toughen him up. He wanted to stay home, play video games and watch movies... We're like opposites, aren't we Nyao? I want to keep my human safe by making him strong. You keep her safe by keeping her away from harm... Maybe we need to learn that raising a human isn't like raising a digimon. There's a lot of trial and error, and just because they're more fragile doesn't mean they can be as strong." "Ah, right! We need to find Unica!" Duffer realized and grabbed Kat's hand. "We can't have her getting hurt like that! You and Nyao head that way, me and Kotemon will go that way, and uh... here, here's my phone number. If you find her you can text me!" He quickly scribbled something down on some paper, passing it to her. "Duffer, wait. We need to act rationally, if she is in danger she'll need all of us." The mon nodded, holding the boy back. "Katsura, you know this area well, I assume. Why don't you take the lead again?"

The problem with alleyways is that they split off from one another like tributaries feeding into a river. While the streets themselves were straight and orderly, the back roads -- the roads hidden in the shadows and harboring the most repulsive beasts -- were designed like a labyrinth. Fortunately for everyone involved, Unica was barefoot, and as such, she couldn't far before a pebble or splinter cut up the soles of her feet. Even still, she was determined to get somewhere. Something inside her, likely compelled by the digivice in her pocket, drove her forward, closer and closer to Old Terminus. When she grew tired of flapping her arms like a bee, she pretended to be the Hero of Justice, a crime-fighting man she'd seen on the TV a time or two. "Hyah!" she exclaimed, punching the air, "Take that, you big meanie!"
"Big meanie?" a voice hissed. Unica stopped in her tracks and looked up to see a BlackGatomon perched on one of the balcony's railings.
Believing this was Nyao, Katsura's digital partner, Unica's face lit up and she squealed with excitement. "Kitty!"
The BlackGatomon flicked her tail in irritation as she cocked an eyebrow. "I am no one's 'kitty,'" she snapped, the fur along her spine fluffing up and the claws on her gloved paws seeming to grow and glisten in the limited sunlight that trickled in from above the rooftops.
"You're so silly!" Unica giggled, clearly not picking up on the signs that this feline was aggressive. BlackGatomon's pupils narrowed into slits, like a cat spotting prey, and leaped from the railing without warning. Unica's survival instincts kicked in too late as the virus Digimon landed atop her. The impact was enough to floor the young tamer, and she fell hard. She landed with a grunt and started to cry loudly when her head struck the hard dirt below. Her wails increased in pinch as the BlackGatomon's claws dug into her chest, drawing some blood and staining the white dress.
"Who's silly now?" the feline snarled, leaning close to the girl's face and showing her sharp teeth as an intimidation tactic. From this close, Unica could see that this BlackGatomon was not the one she knew, for this one had a tiny scar across the bridge of her nose. Unica had held Nyao close enough to know that she had no such markings. It was too late now to do anything about it, however. She cried loudly and screamed for help, which only caused the devious feline to laugh in a deep, unnatural voice.
A mechanic squeal some ways off caught both of their attentions. The lavender digivice, which had fallen out of Unica's dress pocket when she fell, was the source of the horrid noise. At first, the young tamer thought that she'd broken the device somehow, but BlackGatomon knew all too well what the noise meant. "You're a tamer?" the feline gasped, suddenly horrified. Before Unica could even attempt to blubber a reply, a pink and purple blur sent the BlackGatomon flying halfway across the alleyway. When Unica finally came to her sense and wiped the tears from her eyes, she could see Birdie standing nearby, looking annoyed but not necessarily angry. "Seriously? You? And this human?" the cat asked, surprise in her voice.
"Piss off, furbrain," Birdie retorted, her feathers ruffled in clear agitation.

It was one thing for a dark fallen angel to take an energy beam or a sword to the chest to protect someone, but a human girl wasn't something Nyao even wanted to think of. Yet here we are, where Nyao decided to keep Katsura out of danger Kotemon wanted to train Duffer. Kotemon read her mind great: It's different to raise a human from a digimon, while Katsura is in reasonable shape but her mind had taken a toll and Duffer? Well last time she saw him was in a wheelchair.
As for Katsura herself, she was getting back to her senses overwhelmed by the feeling of responsibility. "Right." Katsura said as she accepted Duffer's number. Once again she was elected "leader"... Just in time to find out she was wrong about streets being linear.
"Huh I was wrong... Uhm... Where could she go?"
The question was immediately answered by a scream.
"This way." Katsura said and directed the group towards the sound of the crying Unica-tan.
"So can I use my eyes now?"
"Not on Unica-tan"
Suddenly Nyao stared at Katsura with a mischievous smirk.
"You didn't say-"
"You heard me." Katsura replied with a raised eyebrows, it wasn't an oversight on Katsura's behalf whatever Nyao implied.
"Duffer... Kotemon... I'm warning you... don't look at the glow... Just don't."

Duffer nods and follows Katsura, a step behind the whole time. So when she stopped he immediately bumped into the black-haired girl, getting a faceful of her unusual black hair. "Ah! Warn me next time!" He said, a bit upset. That was short lived as she admitted to having no clue where to go. Before either of the two could say anything, Unica's scream pointed them back on the right path.
"Oh no, oh no..." Kotemon said, feeling a bit guilty for not paying attention to the little girl as they ran after her once again. "Glow, what Glow?" Duffer frowned as the sound of a girl in trouble grew closer, and he grabbed his bat. Katsura would see that the boy had combined the reliability of his baseball bat with a hardlight baton, and the bat glowed menacingly with his anger. "The problem with a baseball bat," he began, setting it behind his head to help crack his neck. "Is that the bat isn't thought of as a threat in the digital world by the mons who aren't that small, having never heard of the escapades of my great, great uncle, a Mister Capone. The problem with a hardlight baton is that it's too tiny and thin... and non-lethal. By making one envelope the other, I solve both problems rather quickly." He didn't seem to be listening to Kat's warnings, and tapped the makeshift weapon against his shoes to help clean them off.

The BlackGatomon didn't so much as move when Birdie ordered her to leave. It wasn't until the Biyomon spread out her wings, revealing the glowering eye patterns on the downy feathers underneath, that the feline began to shift. Birdie flapped her wings as an intimidation tactic and took a single step forward. Although the BlackGatomon was a Champion and had little reason to fear a Rookie, the idea of Birdie, a Digimon who was normally aggressive and hostile when she didn't have anything to stand for, actually having a tamer on her side made the idea of a fight less than appealing. "For someone who claims to hate humans--" the virus Digimon began, but she was silenced when launched an attack.
"Spiral Wing!" Birdie announced. With that, a small whirlwind was summoned, and it grew in size as it rocketed toward the BlackGatomon. The attack was more of a threat than a real attempt at doing damage, and the feline knew it. With a hiss, the solo Digimon turned and scampered off, down the alleyway she'd seen Unica emerge from. It didn't take long before she came across two children with their partners -- Duffer, Katsura, Kotemon, and Nyao. The BlackGatomon huffed with irritation at her bad luck and muttered something about "tamers multiplying" before leaping onto a nearby balcony and disappearing from sight. Although she didn't stay long enough to be interrogated about whether or not she saw any humans matching Unica's description, if the group of four headed down the alley which the BlackGatomon had come from, they'd find what they were looking for.
Meanwhile, Birdie lowered her wings to her sides and returned to Unica's side. "Get up," she commanded, not bothering with pleasantries. Her already-foul mood had been soured by the fact that another Old Terminus resident had seen her with a tamer... and what more, she'd actually defended her human. If the wrong 'mon heard about it, there was a chance she'd have a target painted on her back. While most of the digital world had grown comfortable with the presence of humans, there were still those who despised them and hated the idea of tamers. Birdie had been one such individual, and the BlackGatomon she let get away was another. As such, Birdie was really in no mood to spare Unica's feelings. Either way, what she wanted didn't matter to the little girl, for Unica stood up, wiped the tears from her face, and gave her digital partner a huge hug as thanks. Birdie scowled and tore away from the embrace.

Nyao couldn't help but giggle at the expense of poor Duffer who was whipped in the face by Katsura's hair. Katsura had more important things to worry about than Duffer getting hair in the mouth, such as Duffer not being wary about Nyao.
"Oh nothing, lasers, nightmares, mind control... Normal stuff." Katsura said to Kotemon indifferently as if she was talking about the weather. Only half a minute later did Katsura think of how Duffer, not familiar with Katsura's every day life, would react.
"It's not weird... I only let Nyao use it when I have to... Just don't look" Right, now Kotemon is definitely not disturbed by the implications.
For Nyao the idea of Duffer fighting what might be a 50 foot monster for all she knows with a baseball bat was as pathetic as funny, especially in the context of Kotemon training Duffer to participate on the frontline?
"Oh no, a wooden club, my one true weakness. Please spare me." Nyao said as she flinched sarcastically at Duffer while Katsura rolled her eyes.
The fight was finished before it was even started, by the time they arrived another blackgatomon was fleeing the scene and Unica-tan was united with what was most likely Birdie.
Katsura stopped and watched the scene unfold since she couldn't come up with any need to intervene. Apparently Nyao the Ladydevimon was right.
