A Rematch Among Other Things (Panz)

It was early in the afternoon as Megan and Terra left Terminus. Megan had a small bag full of food for after Kami and Elec's spar. This wouldn't be the first time the pair fought each other. Yet unlike last time, which was mostly to get her and Kami use to fighting others, the goal Megan hoped to achieve with this was getting Kami to reach his Ultimate. It was a long shot that it would actually work, but it was still worth the shot. Besides Kami has been wanting to have a rematch with Elec for awhile now now that he has some more experience under his belt.
However Megan seemed to be a little off today. She was a lot more reserved then she usual was, and it was obvious that something was on her mind.
"Hey Terra. Thanks again for your help." Megan said to her friend as the pair walked, "I hate to ask, but I have another favor I need to ask you."
Kami was completely silent as he relaxed against a tree. He's been mulling something over that he's been meaning to speak to Elec about for awhile. Yet now he found himself with another problem. He couldn't figure out how to communicate with Elec. While he wasn't one to see his deafness as a disability, it did prove troublesome when he wanted to communicate with other people who didn't know sign language.
Perhaps he could try writing what he wanted on the ground, but that seemed to be more tedious then it has to be. Perhaps there was something he wasn't thinking about.

This little trip was quit reminiscent to the time Kami and Elec had their first spar to Terra. With this feeling so similar, it almost felt nostalgic as well. But Megan did seem slightly distracted as the two got food for themselves and the sparring digimon (as well as the rest of Terra's group. Feeding multple digimon and herself was quite costly.) But, not wanting to pry, she kept silent on the matter.
But it wasn't too long that Meg finally began to speak to her about what was on her mind. "It's no problem, Meg. What's your favor?"
Elec and most of the group were also nearby, relaxing. Tab had some family stuff to tend to (nothing of concern, though. At least, that's what he said), and as such wasn't here with the others.
Wade and Hax were sparring on their own, a distance away from them. Lezard was reading a novel which he found sub par... oh the scathing review he would write. And Elec was near Kami.
The ElecGuilmon knew Kami had concerns over something, but Elec couldn't ask without Meg around. And without Tab, who was good at deciphering sign language, there was little he could do. While contemplating on what to do, Lezard came up to Kami, pulled out a sheet of paper, and began writing something down before handing him the sheet in elegant, almost pretentious handwriting. He also spoke what he said out loud for Elec to here.
"May I ask a favor and have you two read a few pages from this novel later today? This will aid me in seeing if this plot twist was as evident as I thought it would be, even given little context."
Elec looked... surprised at the question.

"Well... Yesterday I got news that my grandfather is in the hospital in critical condition, and the doctors aren't optimistic that he'll make it through the week. So, if worse comes to worse, I'm gonna take a plane over to the USA to be at his funeral. However I won't be able to take Kami with for... Well... Multiple reasons really. So could you and Elec perhaps keep an eye on him while I'm gone? I know he can handle himself, but he's been acting odd recently. That, and I heard rumors of what happens to a digimon when their tamers are far away. So I would feel more comfortable knowing that someones keeping an eye on him just in case something does happen." Explained Megan.
While Megan would prefer Kami to come with her, it just wasn't possible. Plane tickets to the United States were pretty expensive, so she could only afford one. Even if she could afford more then though, she couldn't think of a good way to explain Kami's presence to her family. This is mostly because Megan has yet to tell them about Kami in order to not worry them, and didn't believe that this would be a good occasion to do so.
Kami read what was written on the piece of paper Lezard gave him before looking back up at the digimon oddly. Lezard wanted Kami's opinion on some kind of novel? Kami guessed that was okay with him, though he didn't exactly know why Lezard would ask him. Kami wasn't exactly a heavy reader after all.
Kami then got an idea and pointed at the writing utensil Lezard had used as if to ask for it. If Lezard complied, he would flip the paper over and start writing a reply on it.
"Sure, but I need to ask you a favor in return. Could you lend a few pieces of paper to me?"
He then handed the paper back to Lezard and waited for his reply. Hopefully Lezard would agree with it. Kami wasn't exactly asking for much, and hope this would prove to be a way for him to communicate effectively with Elec.

This news was surprising for Terra to hear, even gasping silently in shock. It was worse than she imagined; no wonder Meg was so worried.
"I'm so sorry to hear that, Meg. Of course I'll help you out in any way I can. Kami'll be in good hands should you need to take of that."
Terra remembered the last time she left Elec alone for a long period. He had tried to kill her. While she was certain Kami wouldn't go through what Elec did, she did figure the turtle digimon would, at most, revert to his in-training form. No matter what, though, Terra and Elec would care for their friend as Meg handles her personal emergency.
"Read a part of a novel and give you our output? Well, sure, but aren't you're afraid we might miss something?"
As Elec gave his answer, Lezard had read Kami's reply after he handed him back the notepad. They both agreed, and all Kami wanted was the pad. The Wizardmon motioned Kami to keep it, figuring that he probably needed it more. That, and Lezard had another anyway, which he pulled out of his hat to show it, then put it back up.
"Don't worry about that, Elec. You won't miss much of the context with what I'll have you read.
Now, as my friend Rippah sometimes says, I should strive to be more thankful towards people so... thanks, boss."
"Boss?"
Lezard walked off, and Elec looked over at Kami. Well, at least they could communicate with each other now.

"Thanks Terra. That means a lot to me. Let's just hope that you won't need to watch over Kami any time in the near future." Megan said, happy that her friend was willing to help her during her time of need. A thought then occurred to Megan.
"Now that I think about it, I should probably inform the Superintendent about this next time I get a chance. I don't exactly want to deal with anymore trouble then is necessary. I just hope he won't mind me taking personal time off even though I just recently joined." Megan sighed. She doubted that Josh would mind all that much given the circumstances, but something told her that Guilix would probably give her grief about it.
It seemed that Lezard was willing to allow Kami use both the notepad and pen as he had extra one. Kami signed a quick thanks to Lezard before looking over at Elec. Now that he had something he could communicate with, he could finally ask Elec the thing he's been meaning to for awhile now. So he signalled Elec that he wanted to speak to him the best he could before writing something down.
"Elec. I have been meaning to ask you this for awhile now, but are you able to remember anything from your pass lives?"
To be honest, Kami wasn't even sure Elec had any pass lives (besides the whole incident dealing with Karen's past that is). Yet he needed to know if he did in order to figure if what's he is going through was normal or not. So he handed Elec the notepad and waited for a reply.

Terra patted Megan's back, giving a small smile to affirm her support. "Well, I hope I won't get to watch Kami in the near future myself... you know what I mean. But, no matter what, I'm sure Josh will allow you some personal time off to make sure you take care of things...
Wait... oh, you meant your college, right? Well, either or they should let you have your time off. There's no reason not to let you tend to a potential emergency." Terra scratched her head under her hat, slightly embarrassed over her mistake.
"Eh, sorry about that flub... anyway, does Kami know about this yet?"
With the pad in hand, Elec figured Kami would want to talk with him. And he was correct, seeing the turtle Digmon beckon him to come over to him. He did so, eagerly, curious as to what was on his friend's mind. He read the message and, after a few moments of thought, Elec wrote his reply down.
"Only the one before this, rather clearly I might add, and I only remembered that after that incident I told you and Megan about.
I know some who do remember, some who don't. Tab even said his dad apparently remembers his past 7 lives. Really, seems rather random if one does or not."

"Yeah. Kami knows. He was actually there when I got the news. Of course he's not exactly thrilled about me having to travel so far away without him, but at least he seems to understands why I would have to." Megan said with a sigh as she thought back to the other day and Kami trying to figure out a way to come along with her. She had to admit that he got pretty imaginative, but none of them would work.
"Also Terra, you were right the first time. I was actually talking about speaking to Josh." Megan admitted to Terra, understanding why she would make such an assumption. "I still will have to inform my professors about this, but I believe they will all understand and not give me any trouble about it. On the plus side, this semester has proven to be a very lax one, so there shouldn't be many problems with me missing my classes for a few days. And also I'll try to see if I can get my professors or a friend to send me notes on any lessons I miss through e-mail, so I won't end up falling to behind when I get back."
Kami didn't really knew how to feel as he read Elec's note. It seemed that Elec believes that one remembering their past lives to be completely random. Yet that didn't actually give Kami much to go on. Though now he knew that other digimon were able to remember their past lives.
So should he go ahead and tell Elec why he asked this? He doubted that Elec didn't knew already based on what Kami had asked him. Yet there was also something else he wanted to know before he could be sure. With that in mind, Kami began writing on the pad again before handing it to Elec again.
"I know what I'm about to write down may seem to be an odd question, but please try to bear with me on this. How exactly do you remember stuff from your past life? Is it like anything else you want to remember, or does there seem to be something else in the way separating the two memories?"

Terra gave a sigh of relief hearing that her first assumption of Meg wanting to talk to Josh was correct. For a moment she was worried about offending the older woman and making it seem like Terra wasn't taking this seriously, which she actually was. "Well, if you do leave I'll try to keep in touch with you myself. I'm sure Kami'll want to communicate with you as well..."
Terra had a thought, partially due to Megan possibly needing to leave and having to leave Kami here, and partially due to Terra's own past with Elec.
" Hey, Meg, I wanna ask you something... where do you see yourself with Kami in, let's say, 5 years? I'm not trying to pass judgement or anything, but you're quite busy at times and you have Kami to worry about. I'm probably one of the last ones to bring up planning for the future, but what will you do with Kami further down the road?"
Elec figured that Kami had his own sort of past memories to sort through. However he wanted to avoid using himself as a standard example, as his situation, when it came to the memories and how he obtained them, was unique as far as he knew. But, indeed, he knew that some other digimon simply remembered their pasts with varying degrees of clarity. He just didn't know how relatable his experience was to the standard way digimon remembered past lives.
He wrote in reply, "As I said, I remember my past life clearly. I'd probably be more confused about sorting my memories if not for the fact that being under Susan or Terra was like night and day.
I'm not sure if I can effectively help you, but I'll try my best. What's on your mind, pal?"

"Yeah, that'll be nice. Thanks Terra." Megan said to Terra's offer to keep in touch with her, "Just keep in mind we'll be in two completely different times zones, so I might not be able to respond for awhile. Hopefully that won't be much of an issue though."
Terra then asked Megan something that caused her to pause and think about it for a bit. "To be honest, I don't really know. I guess I had just thought we would just carry out our lives like normal, but that sadly won't forever be the case. If I do become a Doctor one day like I always wanted to, then what little free time I have left will fly out the window. That's not including the fact that once I graduate, I might have to move back to the U.S." Megan admitted as she thought on what could possibly happen. It was scary for her to realize that so much of her future was now unknown to her. Where before she met Kami she could tell you exactly what her plans for the future hold, but now it's just shrouded in uncertainty.
Kami read the note Elec passed back. It seemed that Elec remembered his past memories in the same way he did anything else. Yet Kami didn't really know what to do with that knowledge. It didn't particularly help him, but it did give Kami a hypothesis about his own situation.
Well... No more beating around the bush about it?
"I don't really know how to explain it. There's a door of sorts inside my mind. It's been there ever since I've became Megan's partner. And while I've always had an idea of what was behind that door, I've been able to just ignore it until a few months ago. Since then, it seems to been able to open up all by itself from time to time, and whenever it does, it shows me things from a different past."
Kami quickly wrote that down before handing the pad back to Elec. He hoped his friend would understand what Kami had written on the paper. He knew that it might sound a little convoluted, but he didn't know any better way to put it. Nor did he knew if he should of gone into more detail about what was going on.

Terra had nearly forgotten about the timezone difference should they be in seperate continents. That said, she knew that the difference would be 12 hours, give or take an hour depending on where in the US she was heading to. With that in mind it'll be relatively easy to keep up with Meg, provided Kami wasn't a heavy sleeper.
Meg now realized the incoming difficulty of maintaining her life course while still trying to keep some time out for Kami, it seemed. Terra seemed almost regretful for asking her such a question, but she had to know.
"I'm not saying this to brag, but I think I was a bit more fortunate to have gotten Elec when I was so young. I was 11 when I got him, and as of now I don't have as many matters to deal with as you. Although searching for my mom and staying in the digital world kinda interrupted High school. Sometimes when I talk to you I... honestly feel like an idiot.
But, never mind that... you should really tell someone in your family about Kami... as in what he really is. I admit, I told my dad about Elec when I got him because I didn't know any better, but aside from his shock and the fact that we both were still kinda hurting from mom's disappearance, he ended up allowing Elec to live with us.
My point is that it'll help if someone you knew who might not necessarily be involved with this digimon stuff... some relative, perhaps, knew about Kami. It'll help you out because someone could tend to him while you are busy, and it'll help him out because I'm sure Kami would prefer not to be in hiding if he could get away with it.
But, whatever you do... do not leave Kami. I know well enough the pain that could cause to either of you."
Elec read the message, contemplating what it meant. Well, not contemplating, as he understood what Kami was saying. He was more so visualizating it's figurative meaning in this instance. When he felt he understood, he began his reply back.
"So, what you are saying is that you have a rough jist of what your past was, but you're finding the memories that do clearly come up do so in an intruding way. No rhyme or reason, they just pop up. Is this correct?"
Elec hoped he could do something, although he feared all he could do was listen. But if that could help Kami, he'd gladly do it,

Megan listened intently to what Terra said. Megan knew her friend had a couple good points, but some things were easily said then done.
"First off, just because you dropped out of high school because more important things were occurring in your life, doesn't mean you should feel like an idiot next to me. The fact that your even trying to get G.E.D. is proof enough that your not an idiot. You should also keep in mind that I'm about four years older then you, and the fact that I see you as my intellectual equal, if not greater, should show you how smart I think you really are. Given different circumstances, and you had an extra four years under your belt, you probably would easily surpass me and even give your mother a run for her money.
"Now second off. I want to assure you that I have no intentions to have either of us ever leave each other. He's almost like a little brother to me. A spoiled rotten, over protective, easily jealous, little brother who complains whenever I beat him in a video game." Megan chuckled a bit before continuing. "I kid of course, but you know what I mean. I plan on doing everything in my power to prevent any chances of us having to part ways." She assured Terra. Yet in the back Megan's mind she knew that her efforts may end up being in vain.
"And third off, please trust me when I say that I understand the benefits of telling someone else about Kami. It's just not exactly as easy as it sounds. It's not like I can send an email to my parents saying, 'Hey Mom and Dad. I'm doing fine. Oh... And have I forgot to tell you that I'm close friends with an intelligent, bipedal turtle from another dimension that I visit every so often.' They'd either think I've gone crazy, started doing drugs, or both." Megan said with a sigh, "I know I will have to them one day. I just need to be able to think of a way to tell them that won't cause them to think I'm crazy, or have them suffer a heartattack."
"Kindof. I guess that's one way to put it. Though I fear it may be something worst then that. Do you possibly remember back when we were at the mall and had to fight off those Gazimon? That was when I first began taking notice of it. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it progressively got worse from there. In fact, it got at it's worst when I had accidentally wreck Josh's arm. The door seemed to have swung wide open, and I saw myself in a similar situation before I was able to close them shut again."
Kami paused as he quickly read what he had written so far. It felt nice to finally be able to 'speak' to someone about this. Even if Elec may not be able to help directly, having his feedback about this has already proven to be useful for the deaf turtle.

Terra was thankful that Meg didn't look down on her intellectually. Still, age difference aside Terra felt that Meg had more going on for her. Terra had no idea what college she would go to... although in her defense she didn't expect to be living in Japan, and Terra would not want to go to school in a seperate continent away from the family that only relatively recently got back together. As much as she loved her mother, the 5... almost 6 years she vanished had changed things.
Speaking of her mom, Terra never even hoped to be as smart as her. Most normal people wouldn't be able to be as smart as her. The only other living creature she knew of that would be able to talk to Karen on her intellectual level was Burst. Or maybe Lezard but the two never actually spoke with each other. Weird...
But she felt a little better when Meg considered Kami like a little brother. Terra felt the same about Elec.. although Elec was a bit less peeved over losses. Usually. In fact Terra rarely, if ever, referred to Elec as "her digimon". After all these years they were basically brother and sister. Elec even calls Terra's father "dad" at times.
But now for the big problem... how would Meg tell her family about Kami...
"E-mail was already not an option. Obviously, they have to see it to believe it. And of course, now isn't exactly the best time to reveal him. Tell you what... when you do reveal Kami to your folks, I'll see if me and Elec can come with you. You know, help you out a bit.
What Elec was getting from Kami was concerning. And it sounds like Kami's past life is something he really wanted to suppress.
"I remember those Gazimon we fought. Anyway, I guess it's kinda like Deja Vu, huh? Well... perhaps this is overstepping my boundaries but this sounds like you have a past life that you'd prefer to keep buried."
Elec would not care what kind of past life Kami had (or Tab, for that matter, and Tab has been open about the ancient past life he had with the rest of the group), as that is simply the past. Still, if Kami is getting flashbacks caused by the Gazimon fight or the time he destroyed Josh's arm... well, questions are raised.

"You will? Thanks Terra." Megan replied to Terra's statement that she'll see about coming with Megan when she reveals Kami to her parents. A thought then crossed the young woman's mind.
"You know what? I think I now have an idea on how it feels when one comes out of the closet." Megan said halfheartedly to ease some of the tension, "Nervous, tense, not knowing how exactly your parents will take the news. I admit I have little to no experience in this regards, but it does feel like a fair comparison."
Kami paused for a moment after reading the note as an internal conflict went through his mind. While Elec was his friend, telling the truth about his past was something Kami had difficulty with. He was a vastly different digimon back then. The type that digimon like Elec would normally be sent out in order to quell his threat. Yet that was one reasons why he wanted to speak to Elec in the first place.
"Yes it is. I wasn't a good digimon back then. There are a lot of things that I've done that I wish I had forgotten when I became Megan's partner. Yet fate seemed cruel enough for me to carry on those memories into this life."

Terra gave a slight chuckle over the "coming out the closet" parallel Megan made. It seemed like a fair comparison, although of course it's not an exact one.
"Perhaps... just make sure Kami is standing closer to you than I am, or they might actually think you're coming out of the closet. Anyway, I think the reveal would be better if someone else came along and kinda lighten the load, you know?
Speaking of loads, I'm forcing Elec to come with me next time I get food for everyone."
Elec has guessed correctly, not that it changed his opinion of his friend. Elec would be a massive hypocrite if he did so. Still, it was a bit sad to see that Kami had these internal problems that reared its head up at inoppritune times.
"Cruel Fate? Or perhaps reminders to ensure you're a better digimon? I couldn't say.
I doubt this helps any, but as I said, I remember Suzan when she was younger quite clearly. All the times she'd show me how nothing I was, aside from a tool. All I wanted was respect and kindness from her, but she offered none.
And now, she's so different. Sometimes I forget she's the same person who abandoned me on my deathbed. And... I like that. I like thinking about what Suzie is doing now and not what she used to do. Even if I do remember, I just keep in mind that she's different now.

Megan chuckle slightly at Terra's response to her comment. She really hope that Terra was right in that it would be better for her to come along to lighten the load a little. Though she also hoped it wouldn't overwhelm her parents. She doubted it would, but one could never truly know how these kinds of things will go.
"If you want, I could carry some of that for you." Megan said as she offered to carry some of the food Terra was carrying. She didn't mind that much after all Terra has done today alone to help her.
As Kami read through the note, he found it odd how Elec tried to compare Karen's past and his current situation. He'd admit that he knew very little of Karen's past other then the facts that she had abandoned her family, treated Elec terribly when she was his tamer, and was the cause of his death; yet he doubted that she would ever be tempted to return to what she once was.
"It doesn't feel like they're reminders Elec. It feels like they're trying to tempt me to become what I once was. That's what really scares me and why I wanted to talk to you about this. I fear what would happen if I become the monster I once was."
