It was six-thirty in the evening. In a seemingly calm apartment unit sat a father and son at the dinner table, with three bowls of soba prepared and ready to eat. There were three chairs surrounding their dining table, and only one of them was currently empty. Neither the father or son were eating their food; it was as if they were waiting for someone.
"He's late again..." Kai Moriyama complained as he moved his soba around with his chopsticks. Kai was the younger brother of Yuji Moriyama, a Digimon Tamer with a Tentomon named Kazuo as his partner. Because of their adventures in the Digital World, and the fact that Yuji just did not enjoy being at home as much, lately the high school student has gotten into the habit of being late for dinner at his apartment, and that's assuming he even shows up at all. Kai was disappointed about this, as he looked up to his older brother and wanted to see more of him. However, no one was more upset than Yuji's own father, Genkei Moriyama.
Genkei was not a kind man, or at least he hasn't been for quite some time. He almost never smiles, not even towards his own children. He was a considerable hothead as well, the tiniest aggression being able to send him into a raging rant. Not only that, his overall appearance was frightening, too. His stern expression and the way his bangs were like a row of sharp teeth made Genkei look like someone you definitely didn't want to argue against. Tonight, Genkei sat at the table as he glared at the front door, his chin lightly resting on the top of his folded hands as he did so. He knew Yuji couldn't be out forever...
"You're scaring me, Daddy," Kai weakly said to his father. Genkei just ignored him.
And just like Genkei predicted, the front door opened and Yuji walked right in seemingly without a care in the world. His backpack hung on by a single strap on his left shoulder while the young man carried a skateboard with his right hand. Passing by the doorway to his bedroom, Yuji tossed both the skateboard and backpack carelessly into the room before heading towards the dining table. He stopped mid-way there as his eyes made contact with Genkei's, which were glaring daggers at him. "What?"
"You're late..." Genkei coldly said as Kai began eating.
"Yeah I'm late, so what?" Yuji asked emotionlessly as he sat down, grabbing his chopsticks and taking a bite of his meal.
"Where have you been, Yuji?" Genkei asked, his voice growing a bit angrier.
"I got sidetracked at school, helping out friends and teachers and shit like that. I also stopped for a quick smoothie on the way here." Of course this was an utter lie, as Yuji had been in the Digital World with Kazuo having adventures. And the family didn't need to know that...
"I'm sick of you doing this, Yuji. I'm getting really pissed off by you. I expect you to be home as soon as possible after school from now on."
"What the hell? I'm sixteen, Dad, and it's not past my curfew, is it?" Yuji asked in a more confrontational manner. "I have a life outside of you and Kai. Friends, you know? Then again I guess it's natural that you wouldn't understand the concept of a friend."
"This is the FIFTH NIGHT IN A ROW THAT YOU HAVE BEEN LATE FOR DINNER!" Genkei yelled with a booming voice. Kai tried to ignore it as he ate, seemingly on the brink of tearing up. "Supper is at six o'clock sharp! I EXPECT you to be here by then!"
"Maybe if you weren't constantly like a bomb about to go off then I would probably put a little more effort into getting here on time then," Yuji retorted, taking another bite of soba. "As it stands though, the longer I get to stay out of here the better."
Genkei growled before the three of them continued to eat dinner in silence. It was a very uncomfortable feeling for all of them. For the rare occasion such as tonight that Yuji did eat dinner with him and Kai, Genkei would notice how Yuji would take a bigger portion than he usually would... but only ate half of it. He thought he was slick by trying to hide what he was doing, but Genkei knew that he was bringing the other half into his room. The man simply shrugged it off, however; he figured that Yuji was just saving some for himself for later. He greatly wished that Yuji wouldn't take food into his room though.
"Yuji, please leave your soba in the fridge tonight. I don't like food not being in the kitchen."
"What are you talking about?" Yuji asked without a hint of hesitation, though his heart did skip a beat. How did he find out what Yuji was doing?
"Don't lie to me, boy," Genkei growled. "I don't appreciate being lied to. I know you save some of your meals and bring them to your bedroom for later. I don't mind you saving some but please put your leftovers in the fridge for once."
"The food won't even be in there for that long, Dad," Yuji tried assure him.
"Then why don't you eat it out here then?"
"Why don't you mind your own business for once in your life?"
"Oh no..." Kai groaned, knowing where this was going to lead to.
Genkei bolted up from his seat as fast as lightning, his hands firmly planted onto the table as he looked his son in the eyes. "YOU ARE TO BE GRATEFUL TO ME, YOU INSOLENT BRAT," Genkei's voice boomed throughout the tiny apartment. The straw had finally broken the camel's back, leading to an argument that had been built up over several years "First it's getting that UGLY hairstyle, ruining any chance of you succeeding in life; then it was the locking yourself in your room and playing those GOD DAMN waste of time games every second of the day! I was actually proud of you when you got that job, even if it was at a video game store!"
"Video games are NOT a waste of time, you asshole," Yuji snapped back at his father. "They help me destress after school, and there are multiple communities that are more supportive than you ever are!"
"But now there's this," Genkei boomed, ignoring his son's argument, "now you're staying out all night, ignoring your homework, skipping dinner, not even speaking to me or your brother." Genkei's voice actually started to calm down at this point. "I just wish the best for you, Yuji-"
Yuji couldn't take this any longer. Six years of his father acting like this... the young man had no more. "Oh what a load of bullshit!" Yuji snapped, standing up and pushing his chair away. "All you've done the past six years is try to mold me into someone I don't want to be! You don't care about me, and you never cared about Kai. You stopped being the father I used to love after he was born!"
"Wh-what...?" Kai asked. "Daddy, is that true?"
"Kai-" Genkei tried to console him, but Yuji kept speaking.
"Yeah, it is. Believe it or not, he used to actually be a decent person! He wasn't a hothead, or a control freak, or anything resembling unpleasant. He was a loving dad through and through. But the moment you were born and Mom died, that's when he became what he is now: a giant piece of shit that wants to turn me into the perfect salaryman and remove any ounce of uniqueness and fun from my life in order to be what the country defines as 'successful' and 'not a loser.'"
Very few things were scarier than the way Genkei looked right at this moment. Even a raging Kuwagamon seemed more pleasant than this simple human man right now. His face reddened as his eyes widened; a look that seemed as if Genkei was ready to kill. "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU, YUJI!"
"I'd like to see you try!" Yuji yelled, being quick enough to grab the bowl of soba and rush to his bedroom, successfully closing and locking the door before Genkei could get through. The scrawny sixteen year old pushed against the door, trying to resist the sheer force of his father who was using all his might to bust the door down. Meanwhile, Kai started crying as he ran to his own room and shutting the door, presumably to cry underneath the covers of his head.
"WHAT DID I TELL YOU, YOU BRAT?! YOU WERE NEVER TO TELL KAI ABOUT HIS MOTHER!"
"HE DESERVES TO KNOW THE TRUTH, YOU ASSHOLE! SOMEONE WAS GONNA TELL HIM ANYWAYS!"
"AS SOON AS I BREAK THIS DOOR DOWN I AM GOING TO RIP YOUR HEAD OFF!"
This yelling and pounding went on for a while, almost inciting the neighbors who were hearing the ruckus to call the police. Eventually though, both Genkei and Yuji would find themselves sitting back against their sides of the door. Yuji considered it safe to let Kazuo out of the V-Pet now, who was still shaken up by the whole ordeal to the point where he didn't even touch his portion of tonight's dinner.
Genkei silently sighed... maybe Yuji had a point. His wife's passing was the tougher on Genkei than it was on Yuji, and that was saying something. Genkei pulled out his phone and looked up old pictures saved onto it. Multiple pictures of himself, his wife and Yuji all smiling, taking selfies in front of famous landmarks or just photos of silly stuff the trio have gotten into. A small smile grew across his face as he remembered the day when she told him that she was pregnant... another child to add to their perfect family.
No one was prepared for the complications that the mother would've had during childbirth. All seemed to be going smoothly, and the baby was born as a healthy baby boy. Genkei could remember being the first to hold Kai in his arms, as happy as a father could be. He turned to look at his wife... though now the life had drained from her eyes. It was simultaneously one of the best and worst days of Genkei's life.
Genkei had developed a far more pessimistic and spiteful view of the world after that moment. He took care of Yuji and Kai as best as he could, but he couldn't stop how angry and bitter he was becoming. His son growing apart from him was all Genkei's fault. He tried to force Yuji to become a perfect student, a perfect son, convincing himself that he was the way he was to prepare Yuji and Kai for the horrors of the world. Instead... Genkei became the horror himself. "I should've been the one to tell Kai..." he mumbled to himself. He was thinking back to all the times he was horrible to Yuji, thinking that he was influencing Yuji's life positively and that Yuji was just rebelling for the sake of it. Dyeing his hair, not doing his homework, staying out late at night... it was all just to defy his horrible father in any way that he could.
"I've been a horrible father..." Genkei grumbled. He turned around and prepared to knock on the door, but before he could do that... he heard an unfamiliar voice on the other side of the door.
"Your dad scares me, Yuyu. I'm always afraid he's gonna bust in at any moment and give you a black eye or something! I don't wanna stay here anymore."
"I'm with you there, buddy," Yuji said, Genkei's heart dropping a bit. "He never got physically violent with me before, but I guess telling Kai about Mom was the last straw for him. If I open this door or if he manages to bust it down then I'm good as dead."
"Let's run away then, you and me. We can live in Terminus or Whitewater, or we can ask Weston if we can stay with him. I'm sure he'd take us in, right? His house is gigantomongus!"
Yuji paused for a bit, as if he was debating whether or not to go. "Well, that stunt I pulled was stupid and effectively burned any bridges with me and my family. We can go tonight, use the Digiport and they won't even notice."
Digiport? Something was wrong here...
"Yuji?" Genkei asked. "Who's that in there with you?"
Oh crap.
