“Hahahahaha! You dare challenge me, Yuko-girl? Even after my loyal Nightmare Soldiers captured your insignificant friends, allowing me to harness their souls?” An androgynous villain cackled evilly, while standing all dramatic-like on top of a giant blimp that flew in the middle of a raging storm, showing zero regard for gravity or air physics. The occasional strike of lightning in the background illuminated his deeply unsettling visage, which had been painted to resemble a fiendish clown with bleached white skin, heavy eyeliner and sanguine lips. A long mane of blonde, gravity-defying hair flowed behind his head. His dastardly outfit included copious amounts of black leather, multiple belts strapped around his arms that should definitely cut off his blood circulation, elongated spikes that should classify as health hazards, and a ghoulish cape so large, it spread across his sides like a pair of bat-like wings.
Standing on the opposite side of the same flying blimp - somehow equally immune to being blown away by the roaring winds - was a teenage girl whose hair was equally insane, dyed locks of pink, white and blue mixed in with her natural ebony color. Her pink Domino High School uniform was deliberately unkempt - a stylistic choice considering her punkish looks, her ample black makeup and the titanium piercings that riddled her face. She was a walking juxtaposition of following the school’s dress code on a mere technicality, while also being a counterculture-embracing delinquent that rejected societal norms with the very way she presented herself.
Yuko Himura was a lonely, misunderstood girl who loved Duel Monsters, the trading card game that had become an international sensation. She was never the popular kid at school, her classmates always giving her bad cards in trades, particularly Normal Monsters that possessed no special attributes and were therefore considered useless. To many people’s surprise, she had managed to make a competent deck out of a bunch of overlooked cards, and when she enrolled in Domino City’s Duel Monsters Tournament, her true talent was finally allowed to shine. Originally joining the competition in order to use the prize money to support her financially struggling single mother, she quickly defeated many Duelists in the lower leagues, with whom she made friends over their mutual love for the game. Their names are not important, for they are not main characters.
Her flamboyant nemesis, Jokah Monn, had once been a brilliant entrepreneur and billionaire philanthropist, but was driven mad with grief when his daughter suffered a tragic accident that left her comatose for years. Desperate to find a cure, he dabbled in black magic, whereupon he was seduced by a dark power that took control of him. His current, black leather-obsessed form was a demented shadow of his former self, who led the Nightmare Soldiers, a cult of evil Duelists capable of stealing people’s souls by using an ancient, forbidden ritual known as the Shadow Games. Now he had captured the souls of Yuko’s friends, and was about to harness them as energy in order to awaken a being known simply as the Dark One that would eradicate all life on Earth. What a tragic, relatable villain!

“Even though you’ve trapped my friends’ souls into a bunch of cards, they’re still with me in spirit! And they’ll help me defeat you and your Nightmare Bozos once and for all, Jokah Monn!” Yuko declared, glaring defiantly at the evil cult leader. She pulled a deck of brown cards out of her deck box, and after giving it a nice shuffle, slotted it into her KaibaCorp-trademarked Duel Disk, which then whirred into power, extending two stylized blades on either side. “It’s time to Duel!” She yelled.
“Very well, I shall go first!” Jokah asserted, activating his own much darker Duel Disk and drawing six cards from the top of his deck. Looking at his opening hand, his red lips curved into a wide, sinister grin. “First, I’ll activate the Spell card, Pot of Greed!” He stated, as a large, green vase with a creepy, smiling face engraved on it briefly appeared on his side of the field, spewing two cards out of its hollow opening. “Pot of Greed allows me to draw 2 more cards from my deck.” The villain clad in black leather helpfully explained. “Next, I’ll activate the Continuous Spell card, Stumbling!” He added, as a giant, holographic card manifested in front of him. “Stumbling? What the heck does that card do?” Yuko cluelessly asked. Jokah chuckled confidently. “Fufufu… You will find out in due time, Yuko-girl! I think I’ll set these cards face-down” Two more cards manifested beside his face-up Stumbling card, floating a few inches off the floor with their brown backs exposed. “Lastly, I’ll set a monster face-down and end my turn.” One final card appeared in one of his Monster Zones, its contents, like the other two, being a complete and total mystery.
“I’m not scared of your backrow! It’s my turn now!” The teenage Duelist exclaimed, drawing a card from her deck. “I’ll start by activating a Pot of Greed of my own, which allows me to draw 2 cards from my deck!” She said, adding even more pieces of overpriced cardboard to her hand. “Next, I’ll Normal Summon Gagagigo in Attack Mode!” A lifelike hologram of a green, humanoid lizard manifested on her side of the field, sporting an athletic body that was fitting for a monster with such a high Attack value. “Gagagigo, let’s show this clown what we’re made of! Attack directly!” The rebellious schoolgirl roared. “Tsk tsk tsk… Not so fast, Yuko-girl.” Jokah clicked his tongue and smugly wagged his finger at her. “Whenever a monster is summoned, the effect of my face-up Stumbling kicks in, switching that monster to Defense Mode!” “What the- Oh no, Gagagigo!” Yuko stammered, as her athletic lizard-man suddenly collapsed on its hands and knees, looking like it had lost its will to fight. The girl huffed angrily. “Hmph, fine! In that case, I’ll activate the Continuous Spell card, Heart of the Underdog, and end my turn.” She said, causing a giant face-up card to appear in front of her, its artwork depicting an angry ruffian who looked like he had come straight out of the slums of Brooklyn.

“Lovely, it’s my turn again.” The leader of the Nightmare Soldiers mused, drawing a new card from his deck. “And what a turn it will be! I’ll start by paying 1,000 Life Points in order to activate the Spell card, Delinquent Duo!” He declared. As if on cue, a pair of colorful, cartoon-like devils with the numbers 1 and 2 tattooed on their respective foreheads appeared hovering around Yuko. “Hey, buzz off, you damn gremlins!” The young hooligan cursed, trying in vain to swat the two flying imps away, who made off with two of the cards she held in her hand. “Shit…” “Delinquent Duo forces my opponent to discard 2 cards from their hand.” The evil Duelist explained, before playing another card from his own hand. “Next, I’ll Normal Summon Dream Clown!” A clown with a purple bob cut and a round, green nose quickly emerged on his side of the field, wearing a colorful, star-spangled jumpsuit, a blue cape and a jester’s hat with two fuzz balls attached to the horns. Yuko smirked cockily. “Heh, your clown is no match for my Gagagigo, not to mention you have to switch him to Defense Mode due to the effect of your own face-up Stumbling!” Jokah’s smile widened further. “Indeed I do… which triggers my Dream Clown’s special ability!” He boisterously announced. A sizable bead of sweat appeared on the girl’s forehead. “W-what special ability?” “When Dream Clown is changed from Attack Mode to Defense Mode, its effect activates, allowing me to destroy one monster you control! And I’ll choose your Gagagigo!” The garishly-dressed villain declared, dramatically pointing his outstretched finger at the Reptile-type monster. Dream Clown then threw a pie straight at the lizard-man’s face, which detonated upon impact, blowing the reptilian bruiser to smithereens. “Oh no, my monster! You clown bastard…” Yuko gritted her teeth. “I see no need to overextend, seeing how I have the clear advantage. I’ll end my turn here. Your move, Yuko-girl.” Jokah taunted his opponent, while his Dream Clown made a funny face to mock her further.
“My turn!” The punkish-looking high schooler cried out, drawing a new card from her deck. “Whenever I draw a Normal Monster card during my Draw Phase, the effect of my face-up Heart of the Underdog activates, allowing me to draw 1 more card.” She explained, drawing another card from her deck. “The card I drew is a Normal Monster, which means I get to draw again… into another Normal Monster!” The fiendish clown rolled his eyes. “Ugh! How many more cards are you going to draw?!” He groaned. “Three more, ‘cause I activate Graceful Charity!” The girl replied, as a female angel floated behind her. “This Spell card allows me to draw 3 cards and then discard 2!” She explained, adjusting her hand accordingly. “Next, I’ll Normal Summon Gemini Elf, which is switched to Defense Mode due to Stumbling’s effect… and I’ll activate the Spell card, Double Summon, which allows me to Normal Summon another monster! Come forth, Insect Knight, in Defense Mode!” She declared, as two new monsters manifested on her side of the field… three, technically; One was a pair of female, elven twins that always stayed by each other’s side, while the other was an insectoid, alien creature that brandished a shield and a sword. “Ah, Insect Knight, the paragon of the Indestructible Insect Invaders, which only the elite of the elite can join. I cannot ignore its unmatched fighting prowess.” Jokah calmly mused. Yuko frowned. “Since I can’t attack due to your stupid Continuous Spell card, I’ll set these two cards face-down and end my turn.” She said, doing exactly that.

“It’s my turn! Prepare for a one-way trip to the Shadow Realm, Yuko-girl!” Jokah declared as he drew his next card, flashing a sadistic, teeth-filled smile that twisted his entire visage into a horrifying, disproportionate mess of insanity and malice. “Woah, what the hell happened to your face?!” The teenage girl blurted out. “Seriously, how are you even making that expression?” “I’ll start by Flip Summoning Crass Clown!” The evil Duelist resumed his turn unperturbed, revealing his face-down monster, which was another chubbier, more ghoulish-looking clown wielding a long staff. “When Crass Clown is switched from Defense Mode to Attack Mode, I can return a monster on the field to my opponent’s hand. And I choose your Insect Knight, whose unmatched battle prowess I can no longer ignore!” The female delinquent winced. “These damn clowns are getting on my nerves…” “Thanks to my face-up Stumbling, my Crass Clown is switched back to Defense Mode now. Next, I’ll switch my Dream Clown to Attack Mode.” The flamboyant cult leader placed his hand on his monster card and manually altered its position. “And now I’ll activate my Trap card, No Entry!! This card switches all monsters on the field to Defense Mode, which means that Dream Clown’s effect activates once again!” “No it won’t! By paying 1,000 Life Points, I activate my own Trap card, Skill Drain!” Yuko shouted defiantly, revealing one of her own face-down cards. “While Skill Drain is active, all monster effects on the field are negated, including your stupid clown!” Dream Clown started sweating bullets, evidently being drained of its power. This caused Jokah to scowl bitterly. “You… In that case, I’ll activate Polymerization to fuse my Dream Clown and my Crass Clown. Come forth, my Fusion Monster, Bickuribox! Hahahahahaha!” He howled with laughter, as his two clowns fused together into a giant, nightmarish jack-in-a-box with crazy eyes and a bird-like beak. “My Bickuribox is switched to Defense Mode, but not for long… I activate my other Trap card, Zero Gravity! With this, all monsters on the field are switched to Attack Mode! Now, Bickuribox, attack my opponent’s Gemini Elf!” Yuko smirked. “I was waiting for this! I activate my Trap card, Justi-Break! When a Normal Monster I control is targeted for an attack, this card destroys all monsters on the field except Normal Monsters!” She explained, as the monstrous jack-in-a-box was struck by lightning and evaporated into dust. “Grrr… Curses!” The clown-like Duelist grunted in anger. “You still only have one monster left. That’s not going to be enough to take out my remaining Life Points. Thus, I end my turn.”
“My turn… Draw!” The Normal Monster Duelist announced. “Since I drew another Normal Monster, my face-up Heart of the Underdog allows me to draw 1 more card. Next, I’ll activate the Spell card, Silent Doom, which allows me to Special Summon Gagagigo from my Graveyard in Defense Mode! And I’ll also Normal Summon the Insect Knight that was returned to my hand, in Defense Mode as well!” She explained, as two of her monsters returned to her side of the field alongside Gemini Elf, assuming defensive stances. Jokah harrumphed. “Hmph. What use are two monsters that can’t even attack?” “I’ll show you what use they are! I equip my Gemini Elf with the Equip Spell card, United We Stand!” The rebellious teen exclaimed, as the two elven sisters were enveloped in a powerful aura. “United We Stand raises my monster’s Attack and Defense by 800 for each monster I control, which means that Gemini Elf’s total Attack becomes 4,300!” Jokah’s already ashen face turned even paler. “4,300?!” The girl nodded. “Yep, more than enough to finish you off! Now, Gemini Elf, attack my opponent directly, and End! This! Duel!” “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!”
A massive explosion of light engulfed the area. When the dust had settled, Jokah Monn was lying on the floor, defeated and utterly stunned. “How… How could I lose…?” Yuko deactivated her Duel Disk, sighing in relief. “Phew… What a week this has been! But now it’s finally over. The Nightmare Soldiers are no more--” Her time for celebration was unfortunately cut short, as the entire blimp suddenly started shaking, and a colossal, imposing shadow loomed in the stormy clouds, speaking in a booming voice. “HOW DARE YOU DEFEAT MY SERVANT, MORTAL!” The young Duelist narrowed her eyes. “This is it… the real enemy.” She muttered, steeling herself and moving forward. “Time to finish this!”
Who is the real enemy? Will Yuko be alright? What will happen to her friends? Find out next time on Yu-Ko-Oh!
(The show was cancelled one week later after the dubbing company lost the rights to it.)
