Seeing the light of the fireplace illuminating the living room when Viktoriya had come home after coming back from the Digital World to help Clive come back home, she found the scarlet red chair with gold trimming occupied by the form of her taller father who was reading an old volume describing British law. With her mother working in her own room, the heiress heard the voice of her father talk to her. “I was wondering where have you been late at this hour. You know what time you came here?” As usual, the voice of her father was eerily calm despite the worry he felt for his daughter being gone later than the expected time she would be back.
She bowed her head in apology and replied back. “Sorry if I had come home late, Father. The time is 7 pm past where I should be home, but I was at the library.” This was a lie to deter her family from knowing that she had been going somewhere not of this world. “The library does have books about the Japanese legal system which I’m reading about.” The heiress continued while noting the man’s cold stare and wondered if he was going to interrogate her further.
Seeing him cross his arms and closing his eyes in thought, her father spoke to her with a chuckle. “I had thought you might gain an interest in the field of law, but there are people who have done amoral things to win a verdict.” Opening his eyes, Ivan spoke more about his younger days. “When I was around your age, my father wanted me to inherit his place at the company, but naturally, I refused on the principle that I was more interested in becoming an attorney.”
Although Viki expected that her grandfather was the same strict parent that she had always made her father out to be, it was surprising that her father had interests rather than be a perfect heir. “I...didn’t know Grandfather was very strict, but I understand if you didn't want to take over.” Viktoriya replied with an understanding nod towards her father.
Imposing as her father was, he had a dream as a young man and by God, he followed it most when even his own father would forbid him from pursuing matters not related to the training he got. All her life, she was raised in an environment where studies came first. Friendship was something she prioritized a bit more due to wanting to connect with other people her age.
“I’ve never told you more about my youth, but I figure we can talk about it if you wish. Did you have any questions?” She snapped to attention once her father’s voice broke her out of her thoughts as the young heiress replied. “I would like to know which field did you study for and whether you became a defence attorney or a prosecutor.”
The man pondered for a moment, answering honestly when he remembered the day that he graduated from the St. Petersburg State University and was able to enroll in law school. “I studied criminal law at the St. Petersburg University’s Faculty of Law where my classes taught the points of evidence law and cross examination.” He paused for a moment then said another piece with an amused chuckle. “As for the profession I wanted, I passed the bar to become a prosecutor in England.”
All that time, she was listening to the words of her dad speaking his heart out on his own desires. The heiress knew he had to retire from being a prosecutor to inherit the company after her grandfather stepped down due to retirement, but she imagined both of them to be stronger than she was when it came to leadership. Still learning how to be a businesswoman to take charge of sales of their products, the education was necessary if she was to inherit when her father stepped down.
In the midst of his thoughts, Ivan remembered his friend who was a major in astrophysics. He was always studying scientific things, that much was an enjoyable talk of hypotheses and whatever came to the other young man’s mind. “If you remember the friend I told you about when you were younger, he is a scientist at his own lab now, but he always told me about wanting to study astrophysics when he was a university student.” He said with a hint of a fond smile.
After a moment of remembering her father telling her about his close friend, she laughed for a moment. “Yes indeed, I want to meet with him someday...when he’s not halfway across the ocean.” Even though Japan was their home now, Viki did miss being in Russia and having a set of friends that talked with her about their favorite classes.
“Well...when I am not busy, we can visit my friend in Germany. I hear he has been working on a new hypothesis lately...” Ivan ended his sentence with a quiet laugh to himself as he sat back on his favorite chair. “He and I still talk with one another, but the fees for international calls are a little bit expensive.” The taller man continued with a long sigh, being unable to have his friend come over for dinner when the other man was far away from Japan really was troublesome.
At that point, Viki saw her father set his book on the table beside him and stand up. “I think it might be time for you to have some late dinner. Don't worry about your food growing cold, I will see if I can reheat it for you.” He spoke to her in a tone that could be described as partly warm despite his terrifying image.
After Viktoriya finished her late dinner and went to bed, Ivan would return back to reading his book and drank from a glass cup of wine. From the outside, he seemed to be serious. On the inside, Ivan was very happy to have a talk with his daughter when she wasn’t busy.
