This MPC is 89A: Rocks Fall, Everyone Duels.
I would like bits for this MPC please.
Owen was rather eager for today’s excursion with his twin sons Matty and Jimmy. For one thing, they were proceeding to the Spartan Training Grounds for the purpose of fun rather than training, and for another, his old friend Bixby would accompany them to test his new technology in enhancing the experience.
Through some inspiration or another, Bixby the Gomamon had invented a portable device that would allow users to play the old card game of the DWR, complete with holograms and following the rules of it, and Owen intended to teach Matty and Jimmy this game so they could enjoy it among themselves and others in the family.
As such, Owen flew Matty, Jimmy and Bixby into the training grounds as MachGaogamon, then de-digivolved back to his Gaomon form as they landed, excited to get straight into teaching them about the game.
“Okay, the first thing is to shuffle your deck…” Owen began, when he heard a familiar voice pierce his sense of safety and made him turn around with a start, greeting that voice with an aggressive growl.
“Hello there, Jaelin, I was hoping you might indulge me with a duel like in the old times.” the origin of the voice spoke. Owen recognized her. A Renamon, dressed in an earth-grey tunic and a red bandana much like his own.
“So… you’re still around I see.” Owen spoke in a cold voice, one that made Matty and Jimmy tremble and withdraw in fear. “You keep away from my family and friends, you hear?!”
“Yes, Jaelin, I hear you all well and clear.” Renamon replied, almost boredly. “Yes, in a previous life we were once mortal enemies, but, I have no wish to do physical harm to you now. Just I heard that you wished to teach your sons how to play our old card game, and I thought there would be no better way to teach them and re-acquaint ourselves in our new lives than to hold an exhibition match for them. After all, that is how your human friends settle their differences, right? With card games?”
“...that is how I’m told they settle things, yes.” Owen answered. “And my name is Owen! Don’t call me Jaelin!”
“Heh. You’re one and the same, if you want me to stop calling you that, defeat me in a duel!” Renamon challenged. Owen growled, but turned around, a little unsure of how to proceed here.
“Kick her ass, dad!” Jimmy cheered.
“Yeah! You can beat her!” Matty added. Owen relented, well, if they were just to play their old card game here, he supposed that was what they would do.
“Alright, Renamon, I accept your challenge.” Owen said to the yellow fox digimon. “Bixby, let’s have the duel disks please.”
Once they were both fitted out with Bixby’s holographic inventions, the Gomamon wished Owen the best of luck, but eagerly took his spot between Matty and Jimmy to see how this would play out.
(music:
“Rock-paper-scissors to see who has the first turn!” Owen declared. Renamon agreed, then they made their signs when prompted. Owen’s paper beat Renamon’s rock, indicating he could decide who went first.
“My turn!” Owen declared, drawing his cards, then activated the first. “I summon Beast Warrior Hoplite in Attack Mode!” Beast Warrior Hoplite was an effect monster with 1200 attack points and 1000 defense points, holding the appearance of a canine warrior holding a spear and shield, dressed in Greek armor. “I set one card and end my turn!”
“Interesting choice, Jaelin. I draw!” Renamon declared, drawing a card, then smirked. “I summon Fox Fire Spirit in attack mode!” she summoned a ghostly monster of a vulpine fire spirit. It had 1600 attack and 800 defense. “Fox Fire Spirit attacks Beast Warrior Hoplite!”
Thus holographic battle was made. Owen’s life points fell from 4000 to 3600, but he was ready for it.
“I activate my continuous trap card! Return Fire!” he cried in response. “Once per turn, when you reduce my life points, I can reduce your life points for half the amount!” Owen’s trap card thus flipped up and sent a blast of light at Renamon, reducing her life points from 4000 to 3800.
“Heh, just a scratch.” she sneered. But Owen wasn’t finished yet.
“When Beast Warrior Hoplite leaves the field, I can special summon another monster of the same name from my deck!” he explained, and thus did so. Renamon’s sneer faded a little here as there was little she could do about that.
“I set two cards and end my turn.” she said.
Owen then quickly drew his next card. Ordinarily he would have grinned, but, he knew from experience that it was a blunder to show emotion in front of this enemy officer. He had to maintain his focus as he enacted his next turn.
“I tribute Beast Warrior Hoplite and summon Beast Warrior Hippeis!” he declared, summoning the 6-star monster card, with 2000 attack and 1700 defense. Hippeis resembled a much larger quadruped version of Hoplite, a snarling wolfish beast with a spiked collar. Renamon seemed nonchalant about it, so Owen decided to make her worry. "And since a Beast Warrior Hoplite left the field, I summon another one from my deck. Then, I activate Hippeis's special ability. By giving up 800 life points, I can destroy all face down spell and trap cards on your side of the field!”
“No!” Renamon’s composure fell as Hippeis roared and destroyed both of Renamon’s set traps. Owen’s life points fell to 2800. But since it was damage from his own effect, Return Fire did not activate.
“Now, Hippeis, attack and destroy Fox Fire Spirit!” Owen declared, and the holographic monsters did battle. Renamon’s was destroyed and her life points fell to 3400.
“Not bad, Jaelin.” Renamon spoke in response. “You always did fight carefully.”
“I do what I can to keep my comrades safe.” Owen replied with a shrug. “It’s the least that’s expected of me. Also I know that when Fox Fire Spirit is destroyed, any monsters with lower attack points cannot attack this turn, so my remaining Hoplite can't attack you directly. I end my turn.”
Matty, Jimmy and Bixby were rather excited now that Owen had the upper hand. Renamon’s field was empty, but every card counted. She drew her next one, then played it at once.
“I set a monster and end my turn.” she said, simply. Owen blinked, but drew again.
“Alright then. I tribute Beast Warrior Hippeis and Beast Warrior Hoplite and summon my Cyber Beast!” Owen declared, revealing a hologram of a cybernetically enhanced beast warrior, a level 7 monster with 2400 attack points. “Now, he’ll attack your face down monster!”
The hologram did so, forcing it to flip over. To Owen’s shock, it was one he couldn’t immediately overcome.
“When Mandala Priest is attacked when face down, her defense points are doubled!” Renamon declared with triumph. She normally had 1600 defense, but this was doubled to 3200. “That means you lose 800 life points, Jaelin.”
So it did, and Owen’s life points fell to 2000. Still though, he had a means of fighting back. “Activate Return Fire! That’s 400 to you, Renamon!”
As Renamon’s life points fell to 3000, he had no choice but to end his turn. He’d do better next time though. Mandala Warrior was face up now, and his Cyber Beast could destroy her next turn with ease. Plus Cyber Beast could deal piercing damage, thus Renamon would lose 800 when she was destroyed.
Renamon drew, then simply set a card. Owen drew something that could come quite in handy later, but for now, he’d go through with his attack. “Cyber Beast attacks Mandala Priest!” he declared.
“I activate my trap!” Renamon shouted with triumph, and a chill went down Owen’s spine as the holographic card was revealed. “The Flame and the Arrow! When one of your monsters attacks one of mine and its attack points are higher, your monster is destroyed, and you take the difference in their attack points as damage! 2400 minus 1800 is 600.”
With a burst of fire, Owen’s Cyber Beast was destroyed, and the hologram of a flaming arrow shot through him, reducing his life points from 2000 to 1400. He wasn’t about to give in yet. But there was still more.
“When I successfully activate a trap and my Mandala Priest is on the field, I get to summon a Kofutatsu Token in defense mode!” Renamon continued, and a paper seal hologram appeared next to her monster. Owen noted it had 0 defense points, so he knew what she was going to use it for.
“You know what happens next, Renamon. Return Fire!” Owen responded, and his continuous trap was activated once again, dealing 300 damage to Renamon and reducing her to 2700. But the fox digimon was unfazed.
“Have you got anything else for me, Jaelin?” she asked.
“I’ll end my turn.” Owen replied, maintaining something of a neutral expression. But deep down, he was getting a little excited in this duel. He hadn’t played like this for ages, and it was good to have a challenging opponent.
“My turn!” Renamon shouted with an expression of triumph as she drew. “I tribute my Mandala Priest and Kofutatsu Token to summon Mandala Warrior in Attack mode!”
Owen’s eyes widened when he saw the monster’s attack points. 3000. She resembled an elegantly dressed warrior with golden armor, holding a staff with an elaborately decorated point.
“And I activate her special ability! By discarding a spell card, I can deal 1000 points of damage to you.”
She did so, flipping around her staff to conjure a holographic spell, and Owen’s life points reduced further to only 400.
“What? Not using Return Fire?” Renamon asked when Owen did not activate his continuous trap. She grinned. “I suppose there’s no point is there? You’d only damage me by 500 points and that’s not nearly enough to stop what happens next. Mandala Warrior! Attack Jaelin directly and end this duel!”
The graceful warrior twirled her staff and launched her attack straight at Owen.
“Oh no! Dad’s gonna lose!” Matty cried with dismay, but it wasn’t over yet.
“Reveal trap card! Nutrient Z!” Owen declared, flipping one of his face down cards. “When I’m about to lose 2000 or more life points, I gain 4000 before damage is calculated!”
At once, Owen’s life points shot up to 4400, then the Mandala Warrior’s attack struck home, reducing them to 1400. But he wasn’t done yet. “Now, Return Fire! You take 1500 points of damage!”
Renamon gasped as her life points fell down to only 1200. Clearly she hadn’t expected this. However, she set one card face down and ended her turn.
Owen knew this next draw was vital, and he pulled the top card from his deck. He made a small grin of triumph as he saw it, then activated it at once. “I activate the spell card Proportional Response! I’m allowed to special summon a monster from my hand as long as it has the same or less attack points than the amount of damage I took last turn. You remember, right?"
Renamon gasped as Owen revealed the monster from his hand. Full Moon Beast Knight.
The nine star monster emerged from the ground in a burst of light, resembling a canine warrior clad in gleaming blue armor, holding a shining morningstar weapon. He had 4000 attack points.
"Well, that won't be enough!" Renamon shouted. "I activate my set card! Forbidden Droplet! By discarding one card, I can cut the attack points of one of your effect monsters in half and negate all of its effects! Now Full Moon Knight only has 2000 attack points! Not nearly enough to deal with Mandala Warrior's 3000!"
"Nice preparation, but not enough to save you." Owen answered. “Now I activate the equip spell Recompense of the Fallen! My Beast Knight gains 500 attack points for every Beast Warrior monster in my graveyard, and since I have five, well, you can do the math, Renamon.”
“4500 attack points.” Renamon said, realizing what that meant.
“Beast Knight attacks Mandala Warrior!” Owen declared, and the holograms did their dance, as Owen’s monster triumphed and Renamon’s was destroyed. As her life points hit 0, she was silent for a moment, before smiling up at him.
“Well played, Ja- I mean… Owen. I remember the terms of this duel. You fight just as fiercely as I remember.”
“You too, Renamon.” Owen answered. “It was… kinda fun, actually. I’m glad we could fight without hurting each other this time.”
“A very worthy experience.” Renamon agreed, removing the holographic duel disk and placed it on the ground.. “Well then. I’ll be taking my leave. May you enjoy your new life, as I will mine. We’ve both been given second chances, and I’ll aim to be as productive with mine as you have with yours. Farewell.”
With that, Renamon took her leave. Owen watched her go as Matty, Jimmy and Bixby rushed up to him.
“Dad, was that someone from your past?” Jimmy asked, curiously.
“She was an old foe.” Owen admitted. “But it looks like she’s at peace with me now. All the better, she was a damn nasty enemy to have back in the day…”
“Could you tell us more about her, dad?” Matty asked. Owen pondered it, but felt that bringing up such memories at a time like this would likely make him feel sad, and he didn’t want to spoil this day for his sons.
“That’s a story for another time, mate.” he said. “Now then. I believe I was about to show you how to play? Jimmy, you fetch the other duel disk and I’ll show you the ropes."
With that exhibition match, Owen, Matty, Jimmy and Bixby had a very fun day, learning all about this card game that was once popular in the time of Owen’s previous life.
I would like bits for this MPC please.
