Vera chuckled slightly as she threw her arm over the other girl's shoulder. "Come on Mizuki!" she exclaimed. "It'll be fun!"
The blue-haired girl shrunk back slightly, uncertainty written all over her face. She'd somehow ended up dragged into Vera's circle of friends, and while the girl had never been cruel to her she always seemed just too much on the bright and vivid side. She was like the sun, too bright to look at and her mere presence enough to burn. But somehow Vera had realized that Mizuki had never joined her on any of her shopping expeditions, and decided that she needed to fix that.
"I-I don't know if I can go," she tried to deflect, looking down nervously at her feet. "My-my parents usually want me home right after school-"
"Don't you have swim club today?" asked Vera, leaning in closer. Mizuki blushed. Were all the girls from America so casually friendly with their classmates? Surely she wasn't suggesting some deeper interest, was she? "I'm sure you can skip for one day," Vera continued on. Mizuki quickly reoriented herself to listen properly. "And don't worry, I'll pay for everything!"
"Your-your parents let you do that?" asked Mizuki softly. Vera blinked, and for a moment seemed lost in thought, before shrugging.
"Well, they give me enough of an allowance for it! So I'd say that counts, right?" she said.
"I'm not sure..." muttered Mizuki. Vera sighed, lifting her arm off the other girl's shoulders finally. Mizuki internally breathed her own sigh, one of relief.
"Well...I guess I can't force you," she said. "Just...let me know if you change your mind, okay? I'll be waiting at the east door."
And then she walked away, Mizuki watching as she did so.
Mizuki stood in front of the door to the swim club, her bag thrown over her shoulder. Slowly, she pushed the door open, staring at her clubmates for a long time before speaking up.
"Everyone...I'd like to take today off. I have...some personal business to attend to."
"I'm so glad you decided to come along!" exclaimed Vera as she practically skipped down the promenade, holding Mizuki's hand in hers. The girl seemed even more animated and bright outside of school, and even her very touch seemed to burn at the skin. Yet despite that, Mizuki didn't let go.
"So I was thinking we'd go here first," said Vera as they finally stopped in front of a store. Mizuki stared. She'd expected to get dragged to some giant fancy boutique where she'd be overwhelmed by the colors and choices, but Vera had chosen a comparatively small shop with several simple-colored dresses on display. Smiling, Vera pushed the door open, and Mizuki followed.
"Ah, welcome Vera! And who's this friend of yours?" asked a friendly-sounding voice. Looking over, Mizuki saw someone who must be the owner of this shop walking over, hands clasped in front of her as she bowed.
"This is Mizuki, one of my classmates!" explained Vera. She patted the girl on the shoulder, before leaning in to whisper slightly softer, "Don't be worried. Ms. Morita doesn't bite."
Morita nodded at Vera, before smiling at Mizuki. "Don't worry, Vera's quite the expert at selecting clothes," she said. "I'll leave her to it, shall I?"
"Thanks, Ms. Morita!" called Vera, before dragging Mizuki away towards the many racks of clothes. "Come on, let's get started!"
"Now, with your complexion, I think a medium-darkness green works best for you," explained Vera as she whirled around the rack of dresses, grabbing and discarding them practically at random, or at least that was how it seemed to Mizuki. Finally, she pulled one off the rack, holding it up against the girl's chest before nodding.
"Yes, I think this works," she said, pressing it against Mizuki's chest until she realized the implications and grabbed it in her own hands. Heart pounding, she hurried into the nearest dressing room before sinking onto the chair, burying her head in her hands. She sat there for a moment, trying to put herself back together, before standing and actually looking at the dress. To her surprise, it actually did look quite pretty. And it wasn't too flashy either.
Once she'd put the dress on and stepped out, Vera clapped excitedly. "Eeeee!" she squealed. "It really does look good on you, Mizuki! It brings out your complexion just right!" The girl grabbed Mizuki's hand and gestured towards a shelf in the back. "Now, do you think you're up for adding some jewelry?"
Mizuki stared. The idea of adding even more to this ensemble scared her, just the slightest. And wasn't a dress enough? Yet at the same time...Vera's compliments were stirring up something in her. She paused, then nodded and let herself be brought to the next station.
Vera didn't select anything too ostentatious, to Mizuki's surprise. She picked up a necklace with a blue jewel, and when Mizuki protested the cost, chuckled and tapped it lightly with her finger, making a clunking noise. "It's artificial, see? But it shines bright enough to bring out your eyes anyway." Much less hesitantly, Mizuki hung it around her neck, before turning to look in the mirror. To her surprise, the ensemble seemed surprisingly suitable to her. She actually did a little twirl, making Vera chuckle.
"See, it wasn't that bad, was it? You like this outfit?" asked Vera, grinning. Mizuki paused, then nodded.
"Th-thank you so much, Hampton-san...I mean Vera!" exclaimed Mizuki quickly. Luckily, the American girl didn't seem to take offense, simply chuckling again as she took out her wallet.
"You called me Vera...that makes me happy, you know?" she said casually, as she walked up to the counter pay for the clothes. Mizuki quickly hurried back into the dressing room to change back. Sure, she liked this new outfit, but the idea of immediately wearing it outside this place still felt somewhat terrifying.
She did keep the necklace, though. And as she and Vera left the room, smiles on both their faces, she thought to herself that the other girl's smile might be like the sun, but looked at in the right way, it wasn't blinding at all.
