It was definitely a hot day to say the least, however Kai couldn't complain entirely as there were good aspects as she learned. At the moment her Army managed to pick up another delivery job thanks to one of Tera's former employer's contacts. According to the old woman, this was an urgent delivery and none of the other carriers were willing to take it on at the moment given its remote location, based in the middle of the desert. The pay was rather decent for the trip, a limited time opportunity, but she was more then willing to take it on. However she herself had her own gripes with the job as it didn't give her time to properly prepare for the desert, but she did manage to gather what she hoped might be enough for the trip.
"Come on, wouldn't this be faster if we just flew on me out there?!" the sound of Tera's voice came from the Fusion Loader upon Kai's wrist. At the moment she was wearing a grey tank top, green cargo pants, running shoes, leather motorcycle gloves, accessorized by sunglasses and a backpack with several thermal water bottles. At the moment she was riding atop one of the newer members to the group, Mach, while he was fused with Solarmon to be in Blaze Mode for the extra speed. Right behind Kai was another new member to the team that was recently acquired the adorable Yuki-Agumon Snowball, who was holding onto the motorcycle Digimon tightly. "We've been over this, the directions they gave us required looking at landmarks that only make sense if we see them from the ground perspective. Not to mention it's too hot to be in your cargo carrier, it' solid metal. The saddle stands a chance at rejecting heat and easier to move with you all inside." Kai replied to Tera inside the Fusion Loader as she kept her eyes about for the signs.
"Then why does the new Dinosaur get to ride with you?" Tera replied before Mach rolled his eyes. "Because the saddle is good for my normal output but having an Ice Digimon helps keep it safe during Blaze Mode." He commented as he was fairly concerned. Mach wasn't a stranger to passengers, he carried many people before and Kai was no problem under normal circumstances, though Blaze Mode was an entirely unique situation by comparison. However with Snowball on board he was more confident that Kai would be safe. "Package s till secure?" He asked as he didn't want to divert too much of his attention as he and Kai both were making sure they stay keenly aware of the landmarks and directions they were given. "It's a new backpack, and it hasn't come open yet. Besides the package is relatively light so it shouldn't move too much." She said confidently.
"Please don't be insulted by me asking again as once more I do enjoy the time spent in your company, but are we getting any closer to the destination? If it's a bother I do apologize." Snowball said a bit timidly at this point as it was in actuality only the fourth time he asked the question, with his insistence on apologizing increasing every time. Kai enjoyed that Snowball tried to go out of his way for people, though there were instances such as this one where it was not entirely appreciated. "No need to always grovel. It's a long trip and takes a lot out of us in body and mind. But I think we're coming up on the last landmark, what do you think Kai?" Mach said as he was a hothead but he did try to show some compassion for his friends.
"Let's see, the regenerating double helix cactus, the sand pit with the inverse pyramid, the Sun Dial of reflection, and... the Omegamon shaped rock. That leaves the Glass Octagonal Prism which should be-" She said as the very thing was in sight and approaching fast. Mach was already adjusting his course for the final leg of the journey. "-there and we are pretty much home free at this point, maybe five or ten minutes tops." Kai said as she would sense the end location was coming up soon. She hoped this would be a rather simple in and out job, however she definitely learned from her first days in the digital world that things could always get more, complicated, dramatic, or unnecessarily escalated with little to no limit to the chaos.
Soon they would see a mountain in the distance. "So I believe we have to come up from the west side and we should see the opening. Should be safe as long as I remain alert and-" Mach said before suddenly there would be a massive explosion from right underneath Mach that sent the motorcycle based Digimon flying into the sky with the riders flung free from the saddle. Due to being in Blaze mode for a prolonged period of time, the X2 fusion broke apart mid air from the sudden shock. "Did anyone get a memo along the lines of, by the way we're delivering to a minefield?!" Solarmon yelled as Kai would extend out her Fusion Loader. "TERA! MISSIES!" She called out as she unleashed the Digimon, pointing at Solarmon as she quickly dialed to fuse Tera, the Missimon Swarm before they would fully realize so they'd merge with Solarmon to form into Mailbirdramon. Tera coming out would quickly fly underneath Kai and Snowball, narrowly catching both a few feet before touching the ground before slowly gaining altitude.
Mach, despite flipping in the air landed on his wheels but not before going through a series of explosions. "By Yggdrasil's mercy thank you Miss Tera! For a moment I thought I saw my next life!" Snowball said grateful while Kai was on her knees, holding onto The Mailbirdramon would start to slow down and fly near Mach, before gunshots could be heard from around the side of the mountain. "You Okay Mach?" Tera asked concerned as she could hear Mach's tense breathing. "That stung a bit but I'm more concerned we entered a warzone, still in a bit of shock but I am pretty sure there are shots in opposing directions out there." He said as Kai was starting to regain her bearings as she would look over at Mach. "Mach, you've been pushing yourself all day and things are a bit rough, you should fall back into the Loader." Kai said as she was worried about him as it was a long trip that was suddenly abruptly ended by a series of mines.
"It's all hands on deck for this one, maybe our final friend can be of some aid if she can dig bellow the mines." Mach replied, Kai was rather hesitant but it sounded like there were several forces shooting at each other. However she was hesitant to let Diggy out alone. "Diggy!" She called out before realizing the Drimogemon and fusing her with Snowball into the Blue Drillmon. "I was listening and on the job!" She said before jumping off and burrowing under ground leaving the rest of the army to slowly go around the mountain, only to not clearly see who was shooting. There were larger explosive rounds coming from the cave, while there were smaller automatic rifles coming from other directions. Tera slowed down and let Kai off on the mountain, behind a rock while she flew off.
"FIREDOWN!" Tera called out as she released a barrage of bombs in the direction the attackers to the mountain were coming from, causing a series of explosions along the area the moving source was before a scream could be heard as a Commandromon was sent flying. "Madness Fire!" Mach said as he turned to charge forward in that direction, firing off shots to prevent the soldier Digimon from behind able to regain their balance before one of the explosive shots from the cave struck them, knocking them further away. "Not worth the Bits at this point!" He screamed as he was sent flying.
Diggy popped her head out of a hole in the ground as she looked at Kai. "Good news boss, I managed to find and move all of the remaining landminds to a remote place way over-" She said before there was a sudden large explosion as the Commandromon was sent flying back even further. "-there. Whoops. Boy that guy sure is flying..." She said as she held one drill over her eyes for shade as she tried to gauge how far it was going. Kai blinked twice as she looked around, hearing the silence fall as she would not find any other hostiles. Though slowly the sound of tank treads came from the cave as the being inside was looking about, the green tank like Digimon had a sullen expression, heavy eyes looked about. "You friend or foe? You took that annoying bastard out, so I gotta thank you for that..." He said as he didn't seem to want to fight but he had a duty to uphold. Kai held up her hands as she did not want to appear hostile. "Couriers, we were told to make a Delivery to a Sargent- Actually we didn't get a name just the title." She said as she would try to be honest.
"You're at the right place, and it's just Sarge." He said as he would start to turn around and head back inside. The Fusions defused with Solarmon, Mach, and Diggy returning to the Fusion Loader. Kai took a swig from one of her water bottles before she would start to to make her way up to the cave the Tankmon returned back inside. Inside the cave, a large iron wall with a reinforced iron door was visible at the end, Sarge was standing in front of it loyal.
Kai walked beside Tera, noting the sheer amount of damage done tot he cave from explosions and weaponry, both in and outgoing. "You claim to have a delivery for me
? Who is it addressed from?" He asked sternly towards the incoming group. Kai nodded and reached for her backpack before she would pull out a small parcel. "From a... Captain Rockface?" She read out loud and that got a slight sigh of mixed emotions from the man. "My CO, though at this point it's more like my former CO. He still remembered I was here." He said as there was definitely some joy and some sorrow to his voice.
"How long have you been out here?" Tera asked as she was starting to wonder about this man's past. "It's been about, seventy eight years. I'm a soldier and my final orders were to hold so I hold." He said simply and strictly as he was holding to that strong motif. "But what? Why is it so important you guard this place in the middle of nowhere that can't even be properly seen from an aerial view. The dust coating that door says no one opened it in ages, at least fifty years maybe longer." Snowball asked as the Tankmon was silent for a moment. "DGX-Omega" He said as Tera and the Missies were confused but Snowball started to sweat.
"You mean that infectious Virus that damaged Digicores Ninety years ago? The one made by dangerous radicals before it was quelled nearly five years after its release?" He said aloud as Sarge merely nodded after to confirm. "I was part of the task force, my entire squadron was. We were part of the force that went in and eliminated the hostiles, secured the site, there were nine of us, all brothers in arms who been through hell together. In the end, five went in to secure the inside, the Captain and another were off to the side interrogating someone, one deserted, leaving me to stand guard. Things were by the book until a hidden explosive was discovered inside, near the DGX-Omega Canisters." He said solemnly recounting the situation.
Kai realized what happened even if it wasn't directly mentioned, and she bowed her head. "I'm, sorry. I can't imagine how that felt." She said as she genuinely showed some remorse as she couldn't imagine how hard it must have been for Sarge to stay here in what was undoubtfully an endless reminder of his losses for nearly a century. "It wasn't easy, we all knew what we were risking when we came in, but not even seeing them go out... or even being able to put them out of their misery. However this was the last outbreak of DGX-Omega and luckily contained. While the Captain left to report, I was ordered to stand guard." He said holding to his orders with conviction.
"DGX-Omega doesn't last long, it fully dissipates after a week, and any contianers of the stuff are empty after fifteen years maximum under ideal conditions. Even under pristine hospital conditions those who suffered heavy does last no more then eighteen months. Anything on the other side of that door is probably long gone." Snowball said as he saw little reason to have this good man stand guard over his comrades death site for too long. Sarge huffed a deep breath as he didn't budge figuratively or literally. "Orders are Orders." He said as he would stand firm.
This silent moment lasted until Kai once again remembered the parcel. "Right, the delivery, so I assume Captain Rockface was your Commanding Officer? Explains why he knew where to send this." She said as she was about to hand it to the man. "Mind opening it for me please Ma'am?" He asked as she would not and begin to open it up. Inside was a folded letter and a giant water bottle. "Would you like that read aloud to you or do you want to read it yourself?" Snowball asked and Sarge thought about it for a moment. "If you'd be so kind." He replied.
Kai handed Snowball the letter for him to read aloud.
"Attention: Sargent Sarge.
Listen up and listen well, this is it, the last communication we will ever have. It's the end of the road, as sad as that is, both of us wish this story had a different ending. The five brothers we lost, I know you've been beating yourself over them every single moment since, so have I, and it should be my pain alone to take with me as I was the leader and I gave the order. But we can blame ourselves forever and profess to every single court in the world we are the ones at fault but in the end it was in fact neither of our faults or their faults, just a crap situation. Even if we lead the team inside, everyone that didn't get blown up would've been infected. I know you wish to Nirvana that it was just you instead.
It's been nearly a hundred years since then and I know you're still out there, I tried sending word that the war was over but either it didn't reach or you were being a stubborn piece of work. Heh, in your place I might be too. But at some point everything in life needs to move on, as that's kinda the point, to move, experience, and live. We both know there ain't even ghosts behind you, literally as this sort of trauma doesn't go away unless you somehow turned into a Shakamon, in which case good for you. But if not, listen up; your brothers wouldn't want you to stay in the past forever. I don't got much time as I am nearing the end of my final life, not enough substance to restart.
If you won't move on, then this is my final order: You are hereby relieved of duty.
Captain Rockface"
Snowball read aloud before everyone fell silent. Sarge bowed his head for a moment as he was in deep thought. Kai even shed a tear as she could hear how bad Rockface was suffering as well, and how his last words to Sarge were a plea and final gambit to get him to move on. "It would seem my tour of duty is over." He said looking back at the door. "And so is my job." Came a somewhat familiar voice before everyone turned back to see the Commandramon from earlier. Tankmon immediately pointed his cannons at the reptile digimon who in return put down his gun.
"Relax, the name's Deac, I've been the one after this cave for weeks. I'm on a job but I give up. After hearing all that, the cash ain't worth it if all there is left is the resting place of a few soldiers." He said as he was lying and he was actually desperate for the cash. "I've lost buddies too and things don't get easier down the road. I'll make up some story and just say that some got here first and started a cave in. I got lost afterwards and that way I can walk with something." He said trying to act honorable.
"You'd really do that?" He said as he knew part of the guy's mission was to actually get past the door, the fact he was willing to risk everything and just go another way seemed to say something to his character. "Honestly it's probably gonna cost me my membership with the merc guild but not worth the bits to screw over the resting place for nothing." He said trying to appear to be the good guy in all this.
"Thanks. Guess this leaves both of us without a place to go." He said as Tera would be the first to speak up. "Why don't you hang with us for a bit. We got a fair bit going on and we could use the numbers." Tera said as Kai would try to take back the invitation as she aw the other two Digimon already start to consider it. "A new army sounds perfect if you'll have me stick about." Sarge said and Deac seemed interested. "You lot could use someone with actual power... yeah, sure, I'll let you have me for a bit." He said as Kai couldn't believe what happened.
However she did note that both of the two did possess qualities the others she had didn't. Sarge was definitely high defense and heavy attack power, while Deac was definitely a directly combat oriented Digimon, and both combined had plenty of experience that would be beneficial to both the total army and any fusions. "Alright, guess you're coming with us."
Kai shrugged as she started to leave the cave, trying to make the best of an awkward situation.
