Bee-di-beep! Bee-di-beep-beep! Bee-di-bi-bi-beep-beep!
The noise played out a second time, and then a third. Katsumi muttered a string of nonsense before she mustered the gumption to open her eyelids, wondering where that godawful sound was coming from; it didn't take her more than a couple of seconds to realize that it was an alarm clock, and that she had set it the night before.
That's right... That weird smartphone...
Flapping her hand around until it touched the nightstand, Katsumi reached over and grabbed the device with extra prejudice, pulling it closer so that she could deactivate the annoying sound before it burned a hole into her eardrums. Was it six in the morning already? One look at the time was enough to provoke a mild groan from her, as Katsumi didn't feel like she received a restful night's sleep.
Oh, well. It was time to begin her morning routine.
Katsumi always began her day by applying a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, she uses a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and then an exfoliating gel scrub on her face. Afterwards, she applies a moisturizer, and then a final layer of protective lotion to keep her skin feeling soft and supple throughout the day. From that point, it was a simple matter of brushing and drying her hair out.
Getting dressed for school was even easier, as Katsumi simply needed to wear a white buttoned shirt and a pleated black skirt with her school's navy blue blazer. A striped bowtie and knee-length socks would complete her look, as all students were required to change their shoes at the beginning and end of every school day. Once she had finished bringing her ensemble together, Katsumi would apply a final layer of powdered makeup to her face before tying in her late grandmother's hair ornament.
It was then a matter of gathering her supplies from around the bedroom. Most of them were already tucked away inside her school bag, which made the collection process all the more simple, but Katsumi thought to hide the new smartphone within it so that she wouldn't arouse any suspicions from either Mom or Dad. Nobody ever bothered to check her things, anyway, so leaving out the front door ought to be child's play. She just needed to make sure to grab her lunch box on the way out.
After about an hour of morning pleasantries with her parents, Katsumi was off to school. Living in close proximity to the campus afforded her the luxury of walking there, whereas other students had to be ferried by trains or some other means of transportation. She had until 8:30 to arrive and get settled in. This gave Katsumi plenty of excuse to pull out the strange smartphone from her bag and begin playing around with its features some more, as the thought of doing so had danced around in her mind all morning.
Bypassing the lock screen, she pushed a thumb against one of the listed apps, only for the screen to flash red. "Alert: User is not authorized to access this feature," spoke the phone in its usual manner of robotic sophistication.
Katsumi hummed, "You won't let me access a lot of these features..." she complained, trying to open several other apps on the phone, only to have it tell her the exact same thing as before many more times. "Um... Give me a list of available functions again." A large percentage of the apps that were visible on screen had greyed out, leaving only the features associated with phone usage available.
The girl hummed listlessly until a button labeled 'GPS' caught her attention. Oh, good! At the very least, she wouldn't be getting lost any time soon. Pushing the app, Katsumi watched in awe as a highly detailed, three-dimensional render of Shibuya suddenly sprung to life on her screen, showing every last element of the city in crystal clear fidelity. Floating at the center of the display was a single gold arrow pointing downwards, which Katsumi took to mean was her current position on the map. She could even perceive recognizable landmarks within the image, and saw that the school campus was not too far away from here.
"How incredible..." Katsumi whispered to herself, causing the map to vanish with a swipe of her fingertips. For a mere taste of its potential, she had already begun to imagine what else the phone was capable of, and was eager to discover these things at her leisure. There was still about an hour and thirty minutes before school started. Maybe she'd eventually figure out why there were so many locked apps?
