Staring up at the moonlit sky, surrounded by the calming winds of the network plains Ciel lost herself in thought. It had been a while since Ciel sent Alpha and Beta to stay with some of her friends, well one friend and one 'friend' but regardless the end result was the same. They were safe for now at least, those two wouldn't lose to anyone anytime soon, unlike her at the moment. Lifting up her clothes she saw the massive wound under her shoulder going down her back, she had been performing with this the whole time, it sapped her strength and prevented her from reaching her normal strength, to say it was a problem would be an understatement. As she was now, she stood no chance of protecting Alpha and Beta from those crazed lunatics who wanted them to fuse.
"As of now? Ha. It's not like we stood a chance of protecting them in the first place." A voice rang out from behind Ciel, as she turned to look at it though there was nothing, the voice remained however. "Couldn't protect them when they were born, couldn't protect them when Thunderbirdmon attacked, hell, if Myotismon tried then you wouldn't of even been able to protect them there as well." As Ciel searched for the voice eventually her eyes landed on a fist decking her in the face sending the Sistermon sprawling backwards. Recovering in the air Ciel landed on her feet, skidding against the ground as she looked up.
What she was met with was something she couldn't believe, it was another Sistermon just like her, a slight darker hue to her outfit and her sword, it wasn't the clover sword it was the Yamato! Looking at her side Ciel still had it tied to her waist, sheath hitting the ground from where she was positioned.
"We've never been good at protecting anything though, have we Ciel? How many digimon have died around us? Oh could you even be bothered to count anymore?" She asked as the stranger lunged forward for Ciel, aiming her blade at the digimon's throat. Ciel tried to bring her sword out but, it wouldn't come out of its sheath, no matter how hard she tried she couldn't draw the blade. Instead opting to defend herself with the whole thing, blocking the hit from taking her head. "Hesitation means defeat right? Surely you remember those words Ciel. After all they were his dying words weren't they?"
As she said that Ciel's mind flashed back to a memory she had tried to bury, the digimon that taught her to use a bow. Sleipmon X, he called to her in the dark area while he tried to protect humans who had been dragged there by digimon, forcing an SOS signal to make them appear so they could be eliminated. While they drove them back and saved the humans he didn't survive. She had gotten there but failed to protect him, in fact it was the opposite. He had saved her from a lethal blow, she hesitated for just a moment and it had almost cost her everything, but instead it took everything from him.
"Seems you remember him dying but not his teachings, your entire body trembles with hesitation! You're scared." The strange Sistermon called out as she placed her foot against Ciel's chest and kicked her back, knocking the Sistermon away as she stranger approached once more. "Though you've always been scared, hell. That's why you're not with the boss anymore. She offered you everything, a position of power in the valley, love and admiration of so many digimon, her heart and eternal loyalty. And what did you do? You got scared and ran off, breaking her heart in the process just because you couldn't be asked to face your own feelings."
"Shut the hell up!" Ciel responded getting up and charging and dark doppelganger, swinging her sheathed sword in a fit of rage, the clone effortlessly dodged most of the attacks until Ciel missed one on purpose, using the momentum to spin around and kick the strange Sistermon in the head knocking them away.
Stumbling back a bit the Sistermon wiped her mouth with her sleeve, looking at the damage before smiling. "There we go, little fire is still in ya. Too bad it doesn't mean much." Shrugging she started to walk forward, Ciel brought up her guard as she approached. "After all, no matter how hard we tried there's so many things we couldn't do. We failed to save our own sword from destruction."
A memory flashed by Ciel's mind, her old sword broken into pieces of scrap metal, beyond repair. This flash of a painful memory gave the strange sistermon all the time she needed to strike Ciel with the sheath of her sword, knocking the Sistermon back and sending her reeling.
"We lost our power, we've lost our weapons, our skills have been dulled from the last five years of hell we've had to endure." the strange Sistermon said as she slowly walked forward towards Ciel. "We're injured, can barely put up a fight. In way over our heads trying to raise two kids when we've never even had parents in the first place. A warrior, an adventurer, A hero! Yet playing mother is something beyond us, playing teacher when we're always the one struggling to learn! GRASPING AT STRAWS WHILE A MANIAC ATTEMPTS TO MURDER US!" She shouted as she got closer, till she was standing over Ciel as she drew her blade out, hovering over Ciel's core.
"And, most of all. No matter how much you loved him, no matter how much you wished to be with him, no matter how many moments you shared. Life you gave one another, stories you shared and trials you faced. He chose willingly to disappear rather than be with you. You couldn't save our teacher, you couldn't face the truth for the boss, you couldn't stop Jes from leaving you behind." Instead of the harsh look she had been giving Ciel the strange Sistermon's eyes seemed to soften despite the blade raised above Ciel's chest. "You can't protect those kids." She spoke as if it was a simple unfortunate truth as she plunged the blade down into Ciel's core.
Ciel didn't move or even try to get out of the way as the sword pierced its mark, time seemed to freeze for a moment as she sat there staring at this strange, no. Staring at herself. Slowly Ciel got up, the blade passing harmlessly through her as she stood up to face the dark reflection. "I know, All of this, I know." Ciel faced herself head on, looking at her reflection in the eyes as she started.
"Sleip died while I was supposed to protect him and I had no idea what to do, I panicked, and I ran from the fact. I even refused to use his bow for.... Years. When I got with the boss she, cared so much I was terrified of what would happen if, if she died like he had. If I was there and had tried to protect her and, failed. The thoughts consumed and overwhelmed me. I ran scared because I couldn't tell her my fears, I. I've never been good at asking for help. If I had I might not of ruined our relationship..." Ciel let her arms fall as she closed her eyes, letting out a sigh. "I don't know why Jes chose to leave, why he felt he needed to do what he did. I told him I had supported him but, perhaps if I had tried to argue, attempt to change his mind then things, things might've ended up different. It haunts me still to this day, constantly thinking about the choices I could've changed."
However as she said that Ciel looked at her Doppel once more, eyes focused. "I don't know what it means to be a mom, I know I'm not in the best shape after what I've been through, but those kids have faced more than any should have to in such a short time, maybe I won't be able to protect them, I might fall. But no matter what I'll never stop trying. So long as there's breath left in my body I shall fight, these thoughts and fears. I've been trying to look strong for them, be someone they can look towards and feel everything is alright but, until I face my problems, I'm in no condition to help anyone." her dark reflection smiled as Ciel placed her hand on its shoulder.
"I know not what force cause you to manifest but, thank you. I suppose while they are away I must do what I can to heal and, make amends with my past. I will not fall to hesitation again." As she said that the dark self vanished, seemingly into Ciel, turning around Ciel looked towards the moon once more. Vowing to herself that no matter what, she would do everything she could to protect her children.
