Spirit Hunt - H Fraction
"Thanks guys. Lucemon, you're really not missing much in the 'real' world. Trust me. I've been waiting my entire life for this." Considering his words, a wry expression flashed across Ren's face. "Well, not this specifically. The Digital World was kind of a big surprise. But... you know, something. Grandpa wanted me to come here. I'm not really sure where exactly; besides that instruction to 'look for the Ocean' all have are a bunch of old bedtime stories about pirates and adventures. I could try looking through his journal again for more clues..."
Ren stood up, walking over to where he'd left his backpack, rummaging in it for the journal. Frowning, he lifted out the driftwood chest that contained so many secrets and set it aside, going through the bag's contents methodically. Heart sinking, he turned back to his friends with a grim expression and all traces of his earlier grinning long gone. "The, um. The journal's gone," he said in a small voice.
"Silly human," something said above them. "Monmon took book when you busy chasing Monmon."
Sure enough, another pale-green Monmon crouched in the palm tree above their heads, peering at them curiously. "Well you should give it back," Ren demanded defensively, scooping his possessions back into his pack once he was certain the journal was the only thing missing. "It's not yours, and I need it."
"Chief say human want book. Chief say maybe human get it back. Maybe trade. Human follow, Monmon take to village. You come now." The monkey-like digimon dropped lithely out of the tree, forcing Ren to duck to escape a few dislodged coconuts. Waving for them to follow, it turned to trot away down the beach, following the shoreline. It made little attempt to ensure they were following. Chief said, after all.
Ren watched the little monkey wander off, momentarily baffled by the strange turns this adventure kept taking. "Well guys... I gotta get Grandpa's journal back. I guess we should follow him?"

"You may say that I'm not missing much, but your world is as alien to me as mine is to you. I want to experience it," Lucemon flexes his wings again. Ever since he learned about the human world, he's wanted to go there. He'd been there, technically, but only for a few minutes when he'd met Ren. He wants to go back, try human food, explore their culture.
"I suppose so. I could probably still clip him from here though, if you'd prefer," He closes an eye and points a fingergun at where Monmon is running. He's...joking. Probably. "Fine, let's go," He spreads his wings, and glides off after the little monkey. He figures the humans will catch up easily enough. Right?
Right.

Shiro was the first to charge after the monkey Digimon. He seemed to think this was a game of sorts. Kai just shrugged. "We've got no clues without that journal. We'd best get it before they do something like rip it up or soak it in the ocean. And Lucemon, you'd best not. Kill him, and we don't know where the journal is." Really, wasn't the Digimon paying attention? He started following the others towards the Monmon and his village.

Ren jogged along after Kai, catching up and trotting alongside the teenager as they made their way down the beach. It was an easier task than chasing the Monmon last night had been, especially with Lucemon gliding along overhead and providing direction when the curve of the shore took their guide out of sight. It took maybe an hour to circle the island to its far side, where the beach fell away as the land rose up from the ocean. The group found themselves walking along a path with jungle to one side and a twenty-foot drop to the water on the other.
"Watch step," the Monmon called back to them as it turned towards the interior of the island and then seemed to simply drop down out of sight. Jogging forward, Ren found out quickly how good the advice to watch his step had been; the ground ahead dropped off to a sheer cliff almost all the way down to the water. Ahead he could see the far side of another cliff; the two forming a narrow bay that led to a deep cave. Judging by the water he could see at the bottom, it looked like it might go straight through to the lagoon in the island's interior.
"There's a cliff coming up guys, the Monmon wasn't joking," Ren called back. "There's a path here that looks like it will take us back to sea-level though. Little's monkey's gaining ground, let's hurry! Just... you know. Don't fall." His head dropped out of sight as Ren followed the path Monmon had taken, assuming his friends would be right behind him. Looking out over the little bay he saw a number of caves, ledges and even some wooden platforms and huts connected by rope bridges. "There's a whole Monmon village here!" he cried, eyeing the numerous forms of little green monkeys on various platforms.
Trying to ignore his curiosity, Ren raised his pace to try and make up some of the distance between them and the descending Monmon. It didn't help the digimon was obviously not worried about falling, though Ren knew he could always spirit evolve and aim for the water... maybe. He was pretty sure.

Pfft. A drop-off. Sure, alright. Lucemon glides gracefully above the ground, following after Ren and the Monmon. He's not overly keen to deal with these Digimon. Their initial meeting, only an hour ago, had made a bad impression on the cherubic young Digimon. He isn't too concerned about his--...their safety. For the moment. Monmon are Rookie-level Digimon, no match for him, clearly.
Although, he'd prefer if it didn't come down to a fight.
A village. Hm. Maybe there is cause for concern. Still, the book belongs to Ren, so Lucemon will let him lead here, although those sharp eyes remain locked on Monmon, not wanting the thieving little monkey to get away. Seriously, when was the last quiet day?

Kai stared at the rope bridge. What fun. It didn't help that Shiro was having the time of his life shaking it every which way. Didn't Shiro know what fear was? No, stupid question. Shiro was incapable of foreseeing consequences of his actions. Hadn't that been proved time and time again? Shiro was the type to act first and not bother thinking later. Kai groaned and followed his companions into the Monmom village.

The footing was a little precarious, with the path down the cliff side only occasionally wide enough for a human to walk comfortably. At the bottom of the cliff there was maybe ten feet of sand and rock between the water's edge and the rock wall of the cliff, with a channel between the two beaches easily wide enough to accommodate a decent sized ship. Ren found the Monmon waiting for him in the sand, fidgeting impatiently as it watched Kai slowly descend the ramp. Once they'd gathered at the bottom, Ren gave the young man an encouraging smile. Maybe he was afraid of heights? The moment they were regathered at the bottom of the path, the Monmon set off again, heading for the cave where the cliffs converged. The villagers hadn't ever bothered (or needed to bother) with torches or light sources; it was surprisingly dark once they got underneath the rock. The ocean continued through the middle of the cave; from what Ren could see, it looked like someone could sail a ship right on through. If he was careful... yeah. Now all he needed was a ship. As they walked through the tunnel-like cave, the companions began to hear the low, rhythmic sounds of some kind of tribal chanting or singing echoing softly through the chamber. As they emerged into the island's interior lagoon, the chanting built to a crescendo, then cut off as the Monmon brought them to a clearing of palm trees surrounding another hut, probably the chief's judging from the size. In the center of the clearing, a brown-furred digimon stood over a fire. It was monkey-shaped like the Monmon, with a feathered tribal mask covering its face and a large boomerang on its back. "Sepikmon," his D-scanner announced from his pocket. "The wise monkey digimon. He can speak to the dead and you should watch your neck when he starts throwing his Spirit Boomerang to himself!""So you be da ones on Chief's Island. Me chief, that mean this me island. Good island for Monmon. Collect Spirits for Chief. Found one you took. Been looking long time. Part of set. You give Spirit back, Chief give you book." Ren, his eyes sparkling, turned to regard Kai and Lucemon. "Part of a set, huh..."

Lucemon is...less than thrilled by where they are. Sure, he tries to like everyone, but first these guys steal Ren Campbell's things, and now they're demanding something important in trade for the thing they stole in the first place. "Perhaps it'd just be a good idea if you gave him his things, Sepikmon. That way we can all co-exist as friends. Isn't that a nice idea?"
The cherubic Digimon gives a friendly little smile, trying to convey their good intentions, even if he doesn't believe for a second that the primates will co-operate.

"That's all fine and good, Ren, but weren't you listening? He said you'd have to give them back, in order to get the journal. I thought the entire point of coming here was to get it?" Unless they planned to double cross the chieftain. Somehow, this seemed like a bad idea.

"Human have book when Chief have Spirit back," the Sepikmon replied to Lucemon. "Belong to Chief. Stolen long time. Give book back to show gratitude for bringing spirit. Give spirit back though first, prove not thief."
"There's a problem with that though," Ren admitted, stepping towards the 'Chief.' "My Grandpa left me that journal, same as this Spirit here. I may still be learning about it, but I know it came from him. Why should I believe it's yours? Hell, your little green buddies tried to steal it from me. The way I see it that makes you the thieves."
Sepikmon bristled at the accusation, growling angrily. "No thief. Spirit mine! You no even realize that Spirit of Ocean Totem, do you?" In response Ren shrugged, pulling the D-scanner from his pocket. "I know now, thanks for the info. But you're not getting this Spirit. Now give us the journal. Please."
"Me no think so. Will just take from human. Monmon! Attack!" It wasn't exactly the answer Ren had hoped for. But it was the one he was expecting. The moment Sepikmon shouted, a couple Monmon burst from the nearest trees, slingshots raised. The Chief himself reached up and took hold of his boomerang and threw it with a shout of "Spirit Hunter Boomerang!" Ren threw himself to the side, reaching over to try and pull Kai out of the way as well as the boomerang went sailing through the space they'd been occupying.
This is what he'd been waiting for. Raising up on one knee, Ren took up his D-scanner and ran its electronic reader over the small burst of digicode that appeared over his palm. "Execute: Sprite Evolution!" His form became obscured as it was engulfed in a cocoon of coruscating digicode, which then dispersed to reveal... "Crabmon!"
"Luce', Kai, can you two hold them off? I have an i-" The thought was cut off, unfortunately, by the return of Sepikmon's Spirit Boomerang. It tore a large gouge in the ground, throwing up sand everywhere as it spun by, catching him in the side and sending him sailing off the beach in the direction of the Chief's hut.
Convenient, yet painful.

Lucemon sighs. That went well. He raises a hand, forming a crucifix-esque shape from ten glowing orbs of superheated energy. He throws the attack in the direction of one of the Monmon, "Grand Cross. This could be going better," He seems displeased. No prizes for guessing why.
Perhaps he should Digivolve...
Oh, wait. Right. He has to worry about a third party. "Kai, it might be best if you stay behind me. I mean no offense, but you're not equipped to handle a direct fight with other Digimon, like I am,"

Oh, of course this ended in combat. How could it possibly have ended any other way? Kai and Kuro could do nothing but sigh, and wish they'd just said no. Shiro, on the other hand, was perfectly happy to bare his teeth and join the fight. "Little Blast!" A ball of white energy flew from the small Digimon towards one of the attacking monkeys. He was obviously loving it here.
"Thanks, I'll take you up on that." Kai let the angelic Digimon stand between him and their attackers. And to think, earlier, he had been suspicious of him! He felt a bit bad, but moreso because he was excessively useless in this fight.

Lucemon scattered a group of Monmon with his Grand Cross, while Shiro held another at bay with his Little Blasts. A few of the latter were consistently trying to slip by the little digimon to get at Kai and Kuro. All of this was made more difficult by the need for everyone on both sides to keep an eye out for the path of Sepikmon's spirit boomerang. The Chief had not as of yet targeted anything specific, seeming content to keep it flying through long arcs that would force Kai and Lucemon to dodge, duck and tumble.
While his friends fought, Ren absently wondered what bus had hit him while laying on his back in the silt at the bottom of the water a few feet away from the shore. The legs of his Crabmon form waved idly in the current from the sea while Ren gathered his wits, slowly remembering what had happened as his head stopped ringing. Got hit by that boomerang... Chief. Sepikmon. He wants my Spirit. Called it an 'Ocean Totem.' Said it was part of a set.. attacked us. US. Lucemon, Kai, Shiro and Kuro!
Scrambling around wildly, Ren threw up a great, murky cloud of silt in the water as he righted himself. Crawling out of the cloud and pausing a moment to get his bearings, he found what he was looking for quickly- the edge of a wooden post that served as one corner of the foundation for a certain hut. He followed it around to the far side before emerging from the water and degenerating back to his human form. Wow- it even dried him off! Sepikmon had apparently forgotten him after the first throw sent him flying, so Ren slipped into the Chief's hut before anyone could notice. He hoped.
Once safely inside the dim structure, Ren found it crowded with... junk. A lot of it. All manner of it. Wasn't this guy supposed to collect Spirits? Sighing, he was about to give it up when a light from his pocket caught his eye. The D-scanner again. Investigation showed him an arrow wobbling drunkenly on one side of the screen, pointing to the back corner of the hut. Okay then. Shifting past items salvaged from the shores and waters around the island, paying little attention to what he dislodged knocked down or stepped on, Ren searched frantically. What does a Spirit look like anyway?
Then, it caught his eye. Sitting on a lopsided shelf was what looked like an incomplete statuette- driftwood base, with what looked like a brass hook and iron flintlock barrel set upon it with plenty of room for more. Where was the rest? Was this even the spirit? He lifted his D-scanner to confirm, instantly rewarded with a glowing light and a warbling screech that was becoming increasingly familiar...
"Execute: Spirit Evolution!" Digicode cocooned Ren and the Spirit both, changing his body, altering the dimensions but keeping the humanoid shape this time. His right hand became a large brass hook, while his left morphed into a heavy iron cannon. Any face he had was hidden behind his coat's tall collar and shadowed under a great hat. All except a single, sparkling blue eye.
"Hookmon!"

"Enough of this," Lucemon grimaces, "Armor Digivolution. Lucemon digivolve to...RaptorSparrowmon," He flexes his wings, buffeting the area in front of him with wind. His metal body should be more able to withstand Sepikmon's boomerang weapon.
He glares at all the Monmon, likely making himself the biggest target as the gems that serve as his wingjoints crackle with green electricity, "Stand down, and this doesn't have to get any uglier than it already is through your involvement," The glare turns into a small smirk. Ah, right.
Way to go, RaptorSparrowmon.

Kai was glad that he was behind RaptorSparrowmon. Somehow, being between the Digimon and his foes was not as appealing as it could be. "Hey!" Came the expected response as Kai grabbed Shiro from behind. If he hadn't, though, the white Digimon would have charged straight at the Monmon- That is to say, right in the path of RaptorSparrowmon's line of fire. Besides, it looked like RaptorSparrowmon and... Hookmon? Had this covered.
