...This Isn't Clarksville! [Yuuto / Maia]

[Continued from here] "Really? This is your first time?!" Yuuto shouted boldly, but not out of concern or anxiety. It was a surprise. And it meant there was a really big adventure now, for everybody in the car! Stamping his foot on the train car's floor a few times, he popped her chocolate cup into his mouth and was incomprehensible for a second. "Man! Flen we don't even know--" Gulp. "--where the train could take us! There could be an abandoned train station in a jungle somewhere, letting us off on ancient stone tiles in abandoned ruins...ooh, hold on, I wanna make a note of that." Oh right, there hadn't been room in his pockets for his Silly Ideas notebook, he'd been expecting to go straight home with pocketfuls of candy. Light erupted from the windows of the train as they finally left the long tunnel that Yuuto finally realized was way longer than the one on the trip to Ebisu. Hands to the glass and ass off his seat, that excited young adult was peering out at something new and alien - but not so alien he couldn't recognize he was staring down a metropolis, massive buildings and signs and even natives of all different sizes and colors, a collective of what had to be, like...eight hundred different cultures. They definitely weren't in Shibuya anymore, at least. "Terminus City." Antiqmon offered, too short to peek over the window, and no limbs to support herself now that her apparent partner would rather hug glass. "This is the fulcrum of the Digital World. The civilized parts, at least...the wilds do fight back, after all." Even unable to see, she knew exactly what she was looking at. For a Digimon without much memory, she seemed to remember a lot. "You'll notice the walls in the distance. The city works very hard to stay the way it is. Whatever that means." Yuuto didn't need to be told anymore; no, he wanted to see everything himself. To experience it properly. Scooping his new friend up, he cradled them in his arms, standing up by the train's doors and waiting for them to open. Once they were, he was out and free. "Then you can show me around, right? Not just me, but Maia and Kyaro too? I want the sights! And something local to eat!" "I-I can't show you the sights!" Doll went on the defensive, voice stuttering as Yuuto jogged around, out of the train station in record time. "I only know the world from shelf height! I've been like this for a long time, you know!" The human boy was worse than that dog, or whatever he was! Why were she and Maia fated for partners like this?! ...And why was she a 'she' now, anyway? When did that line of thought start? It just felt comfortable, after meeting the humans.

At least the other tamer didn't seem too concerned about Maia's lack of knowledge to the place. She was concerned it would have caused a total meltdown. When he started looking for something to write on, the girl reached into her bag and tore a page out of her notebook, holding out a pencil. "Paper for your thoughts?" Horrible... pun? Penny, paper. Whatever. It all worked in essentially the same manner for the sentence. Whatever the writing prompt would give him would surely be alarming, either way.
Once light hit the windows, the girl was also turning to look, with Kyaromon leaping to the top of her head for a better view. For once, she wasn't going to stop him, because the sight was certainly something to behold. It was also mildly terrifying, considering the inhabitants. Digimon were dangerous. That thought hit her very suddenly, amber eyes widening to look at Yuuto. "Please, do be careful running around here, though." Her memory jumped to what had happened to her neighbor, after all. He'd been hospitalized not too long ago from what was obviously a Digimon attack. Somehow, that concept of terror had completely slipped her mind until now. Maia would also agree strongly with Antiqmon's warning of 'wilds' fighting. "I assure you, we aren't as strong as they are. Your Digimon's bubble attack at the station would probably just tickle." This, she wasn't entirely certain of, but had been given warnings from multiple people that the Digital World was no place for an In-Training to survive properly.
While Kyaromon was incredibly excited, all he could do was let out a little, "yay!" to the idea of both adventure and food. Maybe, he was suffering a sensory overload, because nothing else came out, even though his mouth was wide open.
"Oh, yes," Maia agreed, but far more hesitantly. "It might be nice to find some sort of food, but I bet they don't take our money." This was a valid point, but Kyaromon obviously didn't care, making excited squeaking sounds the entire time. "Let's just try to take this one step at a time, okay?" After all, it even looked like Yuuto might be overloading his own Digimon with all of his demands!

"Why should we even worry about being strong?" Yuuto wondered with a grimace and a shrug, the idea that this place was any more dangerous than a normal city not even crossing his mind. "I mean, sure, we're tourists. Just avoid doing overly tourist-y things. Shibuya gets its share of tourists, and I visit all the time, so I know!" Rolling his neck, Yuuto was suddenly in Instructor Mode, slowing his pace down as he walked more casually - but briskly, with the flow of...people? It wasn't as easy here as it was back home. Not everybody walked the same way.
"The first rule is not to stare! Don't gawk at anything, unless there's space for gawking set aside." He was already breaking his own rules, standing on the edge of the city's sidewalk to gape at a particularly large Digimon passing through town - a great big honking elephant thing, which probably had important great big honking elephant business to attend to. "And, and...uh. Uh! When touring, a budget is also important. That part's easy, because I doubt we have any of the money they use around here." Something Maia had already pointed out.
He scratched his chin and sagged a little suddenly. "I just realized the most important rule of all to not standing out. 'Try to be the same species as everybody else.' It doesn't come up much in our world."
"You'd be surprised." Antiqmon offered from behind his arm. "Remember where you found me, Yuuto? There are more Digimon roaming your world than you know. I wasn't there on accident." Probably. If there was an intention, she couldn't remember it.
Yuuto's expression changed to a kind of quiet thoughtfulness. "...Huh. Is the reverse true? There are other humans here right now? Are all of us here on purpose? I mean, sure, I kind of wandered onto that train...but the train wouldn't exist if humans didn't need it to come here, right? So there must be a reason. I wonder why..." He still doubted he had any kind of special purpose, here at least. Maia probably did; she was the one that had unlocked the gate, and her partner was dragging her around like he knew what was going on.
"...What do you guys eat around here? I'm starved."

"Digital Monster is a name for a reason," the girl tried to hiss to the other tamer, before other Digimon were too close. She did not want to offend them. Especially while Yuuto was spouting off all this information on not being a tourist. He seemed to be having a hard time realizing that this really wasn't Shibuya. Heck, his advice wasn't even particularly promising. In Chicago, he'd be mugged. In the Digital World, maybe killed. Maia's mind went back to her neighbor's recent injuries, causing a lump in her throat to form. Panic. Yes, she was panicking. The other tamer she knew had almost died because of a Digimon. But, she couldn't show it. If she outwardly stressed, Yuuto likely would too, and she didn't want that.
Instead, the girl would cross her arms, and lightly rub her upper arms, where her hands were resting. Kyaromon, however, made a small comment that would bring Maia's memory to currency, "Remember what Kai said about Digivices?" Oh! Yes! "Digivices are like credit cards, somehow. I forgot," she shifted, to pull out the purple-gripped item. Her knowledge on how it was currency was a little skewed, but since it was able to pay for food, it should be okay.
Hearing the discussion about Digimon knowing about humans, Kyaromon had to butt in, "Yeah! Our neighbors are Shiro and Kuro, and they're super tough Digimon!" he nodded. "And their tamer brings them here! He's so cool." Gosh, it sounded like the little digi had a human-crush, almost. He really did idolize that trio. It was so strange, especially since he barely knew them. But, better role models than he could have. There was no way the blonde was going to discourage them from being who he'd look up to. After all, he could want to be a monster instead and murder people. Luckily, he wanted to be some sort of hero.
Maia would nod, before trying to grab Yuuto's wrist, to keep them walking. People-er-Digimon were starting to stare. She suspected it would spell bad news if they didn't look like they knew what they were doing. "There's a stand over here that looks like a noodle shop. Do you like noodles, Yuuto?" she asked, very casually. If Chicago had taught her anything, it was not to be singled out as someone who did not know what they were doing. "We can eat the same food as them," she added, far more quietly, if she was capable of pulling him along. She didn't want to get separated from potentially the only other safe being around here, either. "The most important rule? It's to not look like you're lost." That was a very important one.

"I'm not lost!" He argued, but kept pace with her anyway, wandering toward the noodle cart - eyes front the whole time. "I just don't know where I'm going. It's not the same as not knowing where you are." With a smile, his hand touched her shoulder, just briefly, before they managed to approach that food cart. Yuuto wasn't blind, and he wasn't stupid. Of course the place was dangerous, full of things way beyond a human's ability to deal with it. Which is why he wasn't worried; why bother worrying when it was so far over your head? "You know why cities exist? It's so peaceful folk can keep living in peace. I guarantee, as long as we're inside these walls, we're only likely to get mugged. It's fiiiine."
Deciding that was the end of the conversation, Yuuto placed his order first with the noodle cart. "Yo! Can I get rice noodles and some brisket? Lots of brisket. I need a meat lover's noodle bowl!" Fishing into his pocket, Yuuto found his Digivice and fumbled with it a little - before just setting it down on the counter. "This will cover the meal, right?" He got the Digivice for free; getting a meal out of it would be a good trade. Naturally, Antiqmon flipped out.
"You can't just pawn off your Digivice! It's rare and powerful! And more importantly, I'm anchored to it!" Before she could hop up to try and clasp it in her jaws, a gloved hand from behind the counter had plucked the gizmo up. Decidedly humanoid fingers seemed to navigate it with ease, almost disinterest, while checking the balance.
"Oh, you've got some bits after all. I was fully ready to swat you kids away. Newcomers can be smelled for miles around, you know." A big round face - and it was important to emphasize big and round - muttered the words before handing the Digivice back. "Okay, your meal's paid for. By the way, your pipsqueak is right. At the very least, there's a map on that thing to keep you from wandering into trouble."
Helpful strangers! His favorite kind. It would probably be considered rude to do so, but Yuuto tried beeping his Digivice at the cart runner anyway. "Makura..mon. Oh, he's high level..." Yuuto read the loadout information rather casually while stepping away from the cart to wait on his food, and wait for Maia to place her order.
Antiqmon wasn't done being mad. "Are you trying to get rid of me or something?! How many times do I have to lecture you on that thing?! It's a holy device! You can't pawn it for noodles!"
Yuuto just grimaced again. "How holy can it be? I got one. What have I got to offer anybody? I mean, not to be overly critical, I've got some charm of course, but I probably haven't got a stake in whatever's going on around here..."

Maia turned to glance at the other tamer when he touched her shoulder, but only let out a small sigh and, "that is not particularly reassuring." She had seen people get mugged, up close and personal. And, it didn't always turn out that black and white for people. But, maybe Digimon just didn't care. Hopefully, they didn't want anything. Regardless, the tamer was determined that she would make sure that Yuuto and Antiqmon would get out of any situation safely. After all, it was her own dumb mistake that allowed them to the closed platform. She had forgotten to close the door. For that reason, the two were her responsibility. Plus, in this case, she was actually the newbie's senior when it came to these monsters. That was... not reassuring, now that she thought about it.
The girl was going to open her mouth about Yuuto offering his Digivice for food, but Antiqmon jumped him fast enough that she really didn't have to. "I don't know how holy that is, but it really isn't something you should pawn off." She added, while skimming the menu for the noodle cart. Oh, she was awful at these kind of decisions. Watching the monkey-mon accessing the money off of the boy's device, Maia paused to mimic the button choices he was using, pulling up a... white screen with a string of numbers. Hey, at least it wasn't dead, like it usually was when she tried playing with it. Maybe the Digital World charged it, or something? She really didn't know how this worked! "Oh, uhm. Kyaromon. What would you like to eat?"
"Cake."
"Not an option." Makuramon would respond, gesturing to the menu of noodles.
"Darn," the bunny-eared monster would huff, glancing at his tamer, who was still trying to decide. "Can you... put sugar in it?" Ew. But, the monkey digimon just kind of shrugged at it. "I don't care what it is! It just needs sugar! Loads!" While the Digi was not looking at his tamer, she mouthed a 'no' at Makuramon, who cracked a smile. He was definitely going to get the tiny monster on a sugar rush, wasn't he? "Also, I'd like rice noodles with.. chicken?
"And, your payment?" To this, the girl would offer her Digivice in her palm, with the screen already up, but clearly maintaining a grip on the object. The round faced Digimon looked at her, making her second guess if the refusal to just hand over the item could be deemed rude. Especially since he hadn't swiped Yuuto's when the opportunity had arrived. With a few taps to the screen, he turned away, "Payment accepted. Your food will be ready shortly!"
To this, Maia would walk over to Yuuto and peek at his Digivice while the information on the monster tending the cart was still up. "Ultimate. That's kind of intimidating," she mumbled. "Even if Kyaromon and Antiqmon digivolve, they wouldn't be able to take him on." This, of course, was not saying that she would think the monkey worth a fight. But, to think about it like that, it could be sort of scary! "They'll be rookies when the digivolve. Then, ah," she paused to think, "Champions, before Ultimate. So he's tough." To this, she could hear a chuckle from the stand's owner. Oh! He heard her. At least he seemed to find the interest amusing.
Both tamer and digimon winced at Antiqmon's obvious offense to Yuuto being so willing to give up his newly acquired toy. Neither really knew how to help the situation! "Yeah, at least you kind of bought yours? Mine showed up in the mail, with an egg, in a box." To this, Kyaromon's tail began wagging. He was very fond of his arrival technique. "Either way, there's quite a few people with them, from what I've gathered, and they're all kind of different. I think it's probably for a reason. Whatever that reason is, I'm clueless. The Digivice is important, though. Without it, Antiqmon will never flourish."
Before anything else could be said, though, a voice chimed from the stand, "order up!"

Makuramon clicked his tongue against his teeth, practiced hands swapping back and forth between tasks now that customers were rolling in. Making noodles by tugging pre-prepared dough between his fingers, over and over, long and thin and suddenly there as if by magic. His tail could grab and shake pans behind him, shifting their contents while they cooked. Makuramon was an utterly efficient cook, and managed to retain a neutral, almost bored expression. "Don't get in the habit of thinking that kind of information is reliable!" The veteran Digimon warned Maia, setting a finished bowl of food onto the counter - there was a lobster hanging out of it. Was that normal for a noodle cart? "There are powerful rookie-level Digimon in this world. The only thing holding you back is experience!" Another bowl put down, for someone that had ordered before them. There was a massive egg sitting in the middle, carvings in the hard-boiled white making it resemble a craggy mountain, the steam rising up forming clouds. Digital World food was bizarre. "Even among Ultimates, I'm far away from most Digimon you'll meet." Obviously the human girl didn't need too much spooking, she was already as nervous as a leaf in the wind. "But, I don't like fighting. I'd rather make noodles, if it's not obvious."
"So...could you become something like that? Like him?" Yuuto asked his partner, thinking to scan her for the first time with his Digivice. On Antiqmon, he got quite a bit more information; her general health, all her attacks, a bunch of data that didn't really make sense to him. If only because he lacked context for most of it. Antiqmon stared blankly at the Digivice's screen, uncertain for once.
"Not like him, no. A machine probably can't become a nature spirit with ease. But it is...feasible for me to reach that level of power. But not for a long time. And I'll need a reliable partner for that." Her tone sounded accusatory; Yuuto nearly looked hurt, but hid it quickly.
"Do you want to become that strong?" He asked simply, the Digivice loose in his grip.
Antiqmon couldn't quite answer. She hadn't considered the question before. Spending so long alone, waiting for someone, she'd expected them to have the answers she didn't. To have a direction in mind already. But this human was nearly useless. "I'll become as strong as my partner needs me to be."
That was good enough for him. Yuuto shrugged and pocketed his Digivice again. "Well! Right now I don't know what that means, so you stay you for a little while. We'll figure it out." The both of them were hopeless, Antiqmon realized. Directionless morons. Maybe it would be okay, for just a little while.
"Rice noodles and brisket." The bowl was almost depressingly normal compared to other dishes Makuramon had served. There was plenty of meat, and maybe it would have seemed overkill in a real world noodle shop, but it was nearly underwhelming here. Yuuto accepted it with glee, carefully balancing it on Antiqmon's flat head. "Hold this steady for me."
The small round Digimon was oddly accepting of being used as a table. "Roger." After that, she went very still, even going so far as to close her wood-carved mouth. Yuuto sat down on the curb beside the noodle cart after grabbing a pair of chopsticks, splitting them perfectly down the middle, and quickly used them to vacuum thin and firm noodles into his face. If it was digital, and nothing better than code, it sure tasted like actual food, which was good enough for him.

The tamer would only throw a glance at the monkey monster when he spoke to her, "I'd rather use it as a basis until I have a better grasp of this. Plus, as you see, we don't even have rookies." She wasn't meaning to be rude to the shop keeper. It was just that it was the best way for her to understand what was going on. Frankly, Kyaromon was completely useless at the moment in comparison.
"Suit yourself," the monster would respond, turning back to his work after Yuuto had collected his bowl. Within a short time, he would set out a bowl with chicken in it, clearly intended for Maia. With a small snicker, a smaller bowl was placed out that literally had a pile of sugar extending up from the center of the bowl. Mostly wet, but very clearly meant for Kyaromon. Oh boy, he was ecstatic! The in-training bristled, jumping from one of Maia's shoulders to the other, trying to find out the easiest way to get to his food.
Of course Makuramon would actually give Kyaromon all the sugar that he wanted. With a huff, the girl grabbed both bowls and mumbled a, "thank you," before going to join Yuuto at the curb. She set the primarily sugar filled bowl on the ground, where her Digimon quickly jumped down and began inhaling. Who knows, maybe he'd get the hiccups and digivolve again. Considering the situation of their location, at this point his tamer would only find it lucky. But, it wouldn't happen. Maia, on the other hand, only picked at the food, not even really eating it. "I don't know if it's really polite to use your digimon as a table."
Thinking about it, where did the meat come from for these dishes? Where they once Digimon, too? The girl didn't really know anything about the food chain here. "Any plans on where to go after this?" Surely, the other tamer had no idea of what to do either, but Maia was at a loss. If it had been up to her, she wouldn't have gotten on or off the train. But, now that they were here, she suspected it'd be hard to convince anyone to go home quite yet.
"We need to adventure!" was Kyaromon's advice, through gulps of liquid and sugar. Were there even noodles in that bowl?

"I agree!" Yuuto added to Kyaromon's comment without skipping a beat. An unfortunate choice, since he could have used that beat to swallow his damn food. As it was, a few drops of broth shot out of his mouth while he talked. "We didn't come all the way here just to catch some lunch! I could have stayed in Shibuya for an adventure like that." On a whim, he offered a piece of his beef to Antiqmon, who closed her mouth again to refuse the food.
Since Yuuto had ignored Maia's plea, Antiqmon stepped in for him. "This is a simple task. I do not mind providing a practical service. My size and shape make me uniquely suited to the work, so it's...a certain amount of gratifying."
Yuuto nodded quickly. "I sure couldn't eat off Kyaromon's head. He's always bouncing all over." Pulling more noodles into his mouth, he seemed pretty content to fill his body with bizarre digital food. Makuramon was capable of dishes that seemed to break physical laws, but that kind of thing shouldn't bother an adventurer. He'd also placed a single noodle and a tablespoon of broth at the bottom of Kyaromon's bowl, just so no one could claim he sold anything but noodle bowls. A visual statement that was either greatly profound, or the most facetious foodstuffs ever prepared.
"Anyway," Maia's fellow human seemed ready to return to the topic at hand. "Think it over logically. Even if it's a walled city, they still chose to build it here. The area directly surrounding the city should be safe to romp around in, for at least a few kilometers. As long as we don't stray too far, even if danger does show up, we can just beat feet back to the safety of the city and catch a train back to our world. That way your little fuzzball can be satisfied with his first trip to the Digital World, we can both learn a little something about our partners, and can claim we did something cooler than 'visited a pretty good noodle shop' after getting off an other-worldly train."
It was downright logical, if still needlessly risky. Yuuto took his Digivice back out, leaning over his empty bowl while exploring a few menus to find the map that had been mentioned to him. "Look here! There's some forested area to the east of the city. That seems like a good safe place to adventure. It'll be like a nature hike, only the nature is kooky and might try to kill us." Less logical now.

"Well, visiting a noodle shop is enough for me," Maia murmured, only eating a small amount of her food, anyway. In fact, the only times she would even take a bite was while Yuuto seemed to be busy consuming his own food. She did have to agree, though. Kyaromon certainly would not make a good table! In fact, he wasn't even holding still while scarfing down his sugar-and-one-noodle bowl!
The small monster seemed quite excited when he found that noodle, though, making a happy squeak, and slurping it up before eyeing the bowl that sat, hardly touched, in his tamer's hands. Taking the cue, the girl set the bowl down next to the little monster, who began devouring the noodles. All this stress had curbed her appetite quite well. The girl still had some candies in her bag, anyway, in case she felt the need to eat anything later. Kyaromon was still growing, though! He needed to eat as much as possible, and he was determined to do so! With such excitement, he almost fell into the bowl a couple of times, even!
Maia listened to Yuuto's opinions and suggestions to adventuring near the city, and seemed almost bought on the idea. After all, it would get Kyaromon to settle down on adventures if nothing interesting happened. Annnnd... then the last sentence lost her. "You should not be a salesman," she pointed out, dryly. Since when did nature have to sound so dangerous? After all, they were humans! They shouldn't risk being so low on the food chain! Though, neither should Digimon. They seemed pretty smart. "I mean, what if we die? That seems terrifying." Not like dying would really matter on being scary. They'd be dead, after all! You can't be scared and not alive, right? No. Still not a good way of looking at that.
"Please, Maia?" the little alien begged, giving her giant, puppy-eyes. Of course, Kyaromon's most effective method of looking sad still included slurping a noodle into his mouth from her bowl. "It won't be dangerous! You'll get to learn about Digimon this way! The internet won't tell you this kind of stuff!"
Ugh. How did the monster know that would actually work? Plus, she couldn't just let Yuuto down. What if he decided to go even without her? She'd feel awful if something happened to him! After all, he'd only gotten to the Digital World because she forgot to close the stupid gate. "Okay. Okay. You guys win. We'll go on an adventure. But," she paused, "if it gets too dangerous, we're going home, okay?" She said that now, but once they were actually waist-deep in threatening creatures, it might be a lot harder to turn around!
