Testing, Testing, Can You Hear Me? [Idmon/Kai Haimura]

Idmon remains out of sight, watching from the alleyway and waiting for his prey to pass by. He's stalked the boy for a few days now, making a note of his routine. What route he takes home, finding the best place to ambush him. Patterns aren't an easy thing for Idmon to understand, given that his own mental structure is somewhat chaotic, and more than a little...randomized. What else would someone expect from an 'incomplete' Digimon?
He has no intention of hurting the boy, not yet at least, but he needs to test how well he can masquerade as his...mirror image. This Tamer is relatively harmless, and even if he becomes suspicious, it wouldn't make a great deal of difference in the long run. No, he needs to fool the people closest to Evans. Closest friends, family, perhaps even that ridiculous reptile he pals around with. Five glowing purple eyes glint as he readies himself. First steps were always the hardest ones, but he has to go now, before he misses today's opportunity. Never mind those stupid Digimon of his, they wouldn't be able to detect him once he shifted into Reversion.
Wham. 'Scout Evans' throws himself out of an alley and into Kai's path, with his usual ridiculous grin plastered across his face, "Kai! Hey! It's been a while!"

Kai was on his way home from school. In fact, he was barely paying attention to where he was going- He had no time worth wasting! He needed to study! Between Kuro and Shiro and his apparent ability to turn people into Tamers by talking to them... Not to mention his stay in the hospital, he barely had any time for studying! Let alone practice! So he was taking this rare respite as a chance to catch up on some of his schoolwork. It wasn't like there was anyone for him to walk into!
Until suddenly there was. "Wah!" exclaimed Kai, dropping the textbook he was reading to the ground. "It's bad for my heart if you pop out of nowhere like that! What's up? I haven't seen you since... Well, that thing with the disappearing kids!" Where, as usual, Kai had been about as absolutely useless as always. No matter what it was... Kai just wasn't good enough.
"Cast's off now." he said, waving his no longer broken arm. Mostly as an attempt to change the subject, but also to tell his friend that he didn't have to worry about Kai anymore- Kai was healed. Still... He probably shouldn't go on any adventures just yet, eh?

Is Scout's grin a little bigger than usual? Certainly seems to be. "Oh, well. I've been busy, y'know? Kinda hard to keep track of everything these days. Gotta make up for all the Tamers who don't pull their weight trying to keep the balance!" Was that...a dig at Kai? Can't be. Scout doesn't say mean things like that. "Oh, hey, great!" A cast? So, the idiot must've been injured at some point. Interesting. Good to know that Tamers are still human at their core, and therefore weak.
'Scout' throws an arm around Kai's shoulders and starts to slowly walk in the direction the boy had been going when they'd met. Scout might not have a concept of personal space, but he's rarely so...forcibly-touchy. "So, does this mean you're gonna start showing up more often? Or are you taking a break from being one of us Digivice-wielding lunatics?" He plucks his own D-Scanner out of his pocket and waves it around as if to emphasize his point. "Can't say I'd blame you if you wanted to take a few months off. Or stop altogether. Bad stuff can happen, after all! I mean. You saw all that SkullGreymon stuff."

Something was off about Scout. Kai... Hadn't heard him say anything about keeping balance, before. But deep down, he barely noticed. Because he knew that it was his fault- He barely did anything. And because of that, Scout had to pick up the pace. Because he was useless. He hated that. Really did. And neither Shiro nor Kuro were here right now, to snap him out of his self-loathing.
No... I'm..." Kai stammered. He hadn't really thought about it that much- Though, it wasn't like he'd taken much of a break from anything due to his arm being broken. Mostly because people kept getting dragged into this crap and needing help. See: His ability to turn people into tamers via talking. And... SkullGreymon? That had been... So long ago. It was nice to see that Scout was over it enough to bring it up in casual conversation... But... It still made Kai uncomfortable. He looked away. "M... Maybe you're right." He mumbled.

Scout gives him an encouraging little smile, "Come on. You know I'm your friend, right? It's not like you've done a bad job or anything. But you've never been very comfortable with all this stuff, have you? You've always felt like getting your Digivice was a mistake. Not saying it was, but...that kind of uncertainty's what'll get you killed in the end,"
He stops walking and unloops his arm from around Kai's shoulders, "Take the SkullGreymon thing as a prime example. I nearly killed you and Rei. What happens if that negativity seeps through when Shiro and Kuro Digivolve? They could end up like I did, because of my own misery and despair. I mean, I got better, but only because there were people there who were able to pepper me with attacks until my Core overloaded. Just something to think about, Kai. Sometimes being alive is more important than being a superhero,"

Kai was pretty certain he'd never told Scout his fears. Never told anyone, for that matter. He took a step back, uncomfortable. Was it just him... Or was Scout acting strange? Like, stranger than usual strange. Uncomfortably strange. But he was right. Kai's uncertainty could do a lot worse than hold Kuro and Shiro back. A whole lot worse. Idmon's poisoned words seeped into Kai's brain, and he found he could no longer even trust himself. Was Scout actually acting strange? Or... Was Kai the one who was weird...?
He didn't know. And that hurt more than anything else, as he stood there in silence.

"Hey, come on," 'Scout' reaches out to try and pat Kai's shoulder, "Sorry if I overstepped my bounds or anything, Kai. It's just been a stressful few weeks. I'm only getting a few hours' sleep every night," Uh huh. Monsters don't sleep! "Come on, cheer up!" Bit late for that.
"I'm just...hff. I'm just trying to look out for people. It's easy to be led astray, and I don't want other people to go through what I did," He shuffles awkwardly on the spot. Is he being sincere, or...? Well, obviously not, but how decent is his acting? Eh. S'alright.

Kai honestly didn't know what to say. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, he didn't have to. "Kaiii!" called a small white figure, hurtling down the road. Yup, Shiro. Talking. In public. He would never learn, it seemed. At least it was just Kai and Scout here. "Heya Scout!" Shiro piped in, smattering to a stop before the boys. But then he did something odd. Sniffing a little, he cocked his head.
"Not Scout?" he asked, in exactly the same manner as when confused by how Loli could be in two places at once. Or how there could be more than one Pop. There were a lot of strange things going on here. And Kai couldn't quite put the pieces together. Not that he had a lot of time to! After all, Shiro had already moved on!
"Hey! Kai! Come on! I'm hungry! Feed me!" Declared the Digimon, who had grown tired of waiting for the boy to slowly walk home. Kai sighed, and said to Scout, "I'd better get him something to eat. You can join us if you like, I guess."

"Well, I'll tag along for a little while, if you don't mind. I wouldn't mind some company," Or to see if he can keep up the charade, "although I...uh. Don't have any money, so I'll just eat when I get home,". What? It's not like he eats in his Digimon form. Hell, he can't. The one time he tried, he...well. He regretted it. Still, perhaps his Reversion Form can handle it better. He is fundamentally human.
A thoroughly unpleasant thought to have.
Still. What had that stupid little creature meant by 'not Scout'? Hrm. His digital signature should be suppressed in this state. Likely just a fluke. Otherwise...well. Cross that bridge when they get to it.
'Scout' shakes his head and offers a smile, "So, where to?"

"Sounds good to me." Kai shrugged, then picked up Shiro ("Hey!"). The Digimon securely hidden in his bag, Kai headed off towards the restuarant. Theoretically, Kuro wouldn't have a problem waiting. Shiro, on the other hand... He hadn't been fed since this morning! And besides, this took his mind off the strange way that Scout was acting today. "Oh, probably just to grab a burger at WcRonalds."

"Burger, right," Those were the ones with processed animal carcasses wrapped in fermented calcium-based fluids. Idmon remembered that much. Things on Earth didn't disintegrate when you terminated them, they remained Earthbound in some bizarre edible fashion. Humans are bizarre. And disgusting. Ngh. He's not sure what a 'WcRonalds' is. Perhaps Kai is having a stroke. Oh well. "So, what...uh. What've you been up to, then, Kai?" Besides being a walking, talking failure, that is.

Kai shrugged. "Can't say I'm fond of them, but they're cheap, and I don't have that much money." Oh, like he had to justify himself for his poor life choices. "I've not been doing much. Err... Kuro and Shiro evolved to Ultimate. That's about all that's happened since we last met." He shrugged again. Trust Scout to make him feel like the boring person he was. "How about you?" Kai returned the question.

"To...Ultimate?" ...Dammit. Maybe this kid's more of a threat than he realized. Idmon suddenly realizes how vulnerable he is. He can't even digivolve to Champion yet. And that's assuming he can digivolve properly. Sure, he got from Fresh to In-Training to Rookie, but who knows if it goes past that? His coding is damaged, after all. "That's...something. Congrats. What, uh...what triggered it?"
What about him? Uh. "Oh, you know. The usual! Trying to stay out of trouble, getting my butt kicked,"

"I... I honestly don't know what triggers it. There's a lot of things I don't get about Digimon." Kai admitted. He hated admitting it... But Scout was a friend. Kai didn't have to act smarter, braver, or stronger in front of him. Scout was someone Kai could trust. Shiro popped his head out of the bag. "Are we there yet!?"
After pushing Shiro back into the bag, and assuring him that yes, they were there, Kai told Scout, "I'll just be a moment." It really was only a moment, as the boy went into the fast food chain, purchased a burger, and stepped out again. He slipped the burger into his bag for Shiro- He might be worried about a mess getting everywehere, but Shiro was a very thorough eater. "So, uh, what are you up to now? Don't let me hold you up for too long."

"Oh, y'know. Just the usual. I'm probably going to head home and crash though. It's been a long couple'a days!" 'Scout' offers a smile. Well, he doesn't want to drag this out too long. Despite a few slip-ups with his attitude, Kai seems relatively convinced that he's Scout. That'll do for a test run.
"Thanks for hanging out anyway, we'll have to do this again...uh...soon," He simulates a small blush on his cheeks, and then leans in to give Kai a tight hug. Scout's pretty well known for his hugs, but this one goes on...maybe a little too long? As the energetic teen pulls away, he proceeds to kiss Kai on the cheek, a little too close to his mouth to be a friendly gesture. With that, he turns and sprints away down the nearest alleyway.
Disgusting. But entertaining.
