Well. The secret was out. Kuu found himself standing on top of the statue at Hachiko Square, after events that his tamer didn't want to recollect. Needless to say, the busy meet-up place had gone crazy with the strange creature's appearance. On top of that, he was dumb enough to actually talk to people, until Maia had run up to force him off of the dog statue. There was a moment of 'thankfully DATS hadn't shown up and removed her Digimon,' but also a, 'where were they to stop this situation from getting out of hand?'
Instead, Kuu spent far too long talking to several people that were taking videos of him, and his tamer, while he tried to emphasize that he wasn't going to eat them all and that he only wanted some more cookies. Apparently, this was deemed a friendly enough outing for Digimon, or something, considering it managed to make the news and way too many websites for Maia to even care to touch her computer for quite some time. This entire thing was more than a little insane.
Still, today was following a similar pattern as the past two days, since the monster was revealed, and her phone was blowing up! "Kuu, tell me again how you didn't put my phone number on the internet," the girl groaned, rolling in her bed. It was six in the morning. Six. She didn't want to be awake right now! It wasn't like Maia had been allowed to go to class since the entire event had taken place. The decision had been pretty unanimous between both her parents and her teachers. What happened to wanting a normal life? Kai probably hated her right now for letting this slip. But, it wasn't like she could just walk next door and apologise to him! No! There were people outside of her house! One step outside, and someone was shouting at her!
"How 'bout I tell you where one of your socks are, instead?" Kuu suggested, peering out the window. Even from the second floor, Maia could still see the flashes of cameras. Ugh. He needed to stop! What was up with this dumb fox? Weren't they supposed to be cunning and sneaky? Did she get a faulty model of Kudamon? Why couldn't she have a regular day?
Slowly, the girl managed to get out of bed, swiping the little monster from the window. "I knew I should have found a way to return you," she grumbled, as the rookie just giggled maniacally. Shuffling down the stairs, she found her dad sitting on the couch, trying to settle her mother down from the clear meltdown that she'd been subjected to since the event had happened. Per usual, they went silent the second that it was obvious she was there. "Oh, no, no. Keep talking. It's not like I can't hear it anyway," the girl huffed, standing at the bottom of the stairs. "Let me guess. I can't keep him, and I'm a disappointment?" Oh! It was almost like she'd been caught doing something wrong before! Not like it was hard to guess their reaction!
While her dad only scrunched his face at her, before returning to trying to prevent his wife from taking out whatever emotions she was feeling, it was obvious there was bound to be an outburst. "Why didn't anyone tell me about this demon in our house?" Was the start of an already overplayed argument that Maia was growing tired of. "You didn't think you'd hurt anyone with that monster? Is this what you've been so quiet about? Months, Maia. You've been hiding this for months! From me!"
Before she could continue much further, the girl had already turned, grabbing a jacket off a hanger. "Thanks for the encouragement, Mom. You're too great. Think about what you're saying before you ask me why I didn't tell you next time." While the tone sounded completely uncaring, it wasn't like her mother's words didn't bite. They dug so deep that she couldn't stop hearing it. The speeches were penetrating her mind and her heart, causing an infinite sinking feeling. Still, her dad trying to explain how Kuu wasn't actually a demon wasn't doing any good. Instead, it had turned to a, 'you fed him?!' rather than anything that could have been logical in an argument.
Seeing the teen heading for her shoes, her mom snapped a, "where do you think you're going? You're not leaving this house!" For being so many levels of upset, one would think she'd want nothing more than the problem to leave for a while. Instead, she was trying to cage it, cause it to fester, eventually break it down. There was nothing soothing in this house anymore. All it had become were demands and name calling. The arguments were invalid. Every attempt to speak up was immediately shut down by this warden.
While Kuu had tried to remain relatively quiet after the first day of this argument, he couldn't help but add, "not a demon," under his breath, repeatedly. It wasn't helping. But, at least he was doing better than the first day, when he tried the ecstatic approach of shouting 'hi mom' at her and offering to help her make dinner. That hadn't gone over very well at all. Especially since they had walked in right as the news was displaying some of the footage.
"Am," Maia retorted, not even bothering with a full sentence response. She was tired. It was early, and the arguments never stopped. Had she even actually slept since everything went down? Between the phone calls, the bickering, and just everything, she could barely find time to think straight!
"No! You're staying right here! You're grounded!"
There was a pause, as if the words had cemented the blonde to the floor. She opened her mouth, only to close it again. Then, she looked down. Kuu curled around her neck, ears flat. "Maia," he mumbled, feeling her entire body shaking. Slowly, she turned toward her parents, shoes already on, looking defeated.
Just as her mom appeared triumphant, the woman went to open her mouth, clearly planning on giving some other demand to her daughter. Hand gestures stopped her, brows furrowing as she worked to read the signs. Her mother had never been particularly great at reading sign language. "You're narrow minded. I'm sorry. I'm leaving. If you try to stop me, I'll show you how scary I can actually make him."
"Scary?" The woman's eyes narrowed, seeing this as her own daughter threatening her. "There'll be no such thing! You-" Cutting her off was the sound of the door slamming shut. Maia was gone. The parents stared in silence at the door. It had grown the most quiet inside that it had been in days.
Outside, however, was not so much. The tired tamer was subjected to lights flashing, and people shouting. This was embarrassing. "Do you guys like ruining teenage girl's lives?" Of course they did. Why else would there be people at her house at six in the morning? She didn't even bother listening to the responses, or the questions being called out. "Look. You all know Digimon are real now. Your nightmares are real or whatever. Maybe your kids have them. Maybe they are them," to this, there was a new set of gasps. Some people hadn't seen it online, where people all over were coming out as spirit users, too! If the secret was out, why hide it? Of course, at the same time, there were surely those who kept everything under wraps. "Can't you go find someone else more interesting and leave us alone? I just want to go to school."
Nobody wanted to listen to the tamer's request. Instead, Kuu was being shouted at, and one person even dared to reach out to try to grab him from her shoulder. As the Digimon cringed back, almost debating on snapping, Maia found herself shoving the stranger away. "Don't touch him," she warned, more than fed up with the passing days. If this was how people were going to treat her friend, maybe she didn't want them to think he was a friend at all. Still, the fact that she had essentially assaulted some guy had caused more problems, as people began to panic.
"Hey, everyone! Look at the talking fox," the rookie shouted, scrambling to the top of Maia's head. Getting a feeling of what was about to happen, the girl covered her eyes with her hands just in time. "Blinding Ray!" With a flash of light, there was more of a commotion, but as it died, it seemed that the two had completely vanished! Had they gone back inside?
Nope. Instead, they were running into the forest, only stopping once it was clear that nobody had followed them. At that moment, Maia finally crumpled, falling to her knees as a complete mess. No words could be spoken. It had taken all of her efforts to just face the crowd outside of her door! The little fox squirreled himself around to sit on her lap, stretching to poke his nose to her face. "Broken Maia needs to repair," he suggested, nonsensically.
"I can always eat them all."
While there was humor to this, the thought had crossed her mind. What if he acted out? If he was violent, it would likely cause more problems than just this. Hurt enough people, and someone was bound to come after them and destroy him. They'd probably only gotten away with all of this because of how friendly the fox had been thus far! "That's not very heroic, Kuu," she finally managed out. She just wanted to rest. To be normal. If these people had any idea of what kind of terrors some of the Digimon could be, this turnout would have been entirely different! What were other tamers dealing with right now?
"I'm Maia's hero first. Everyone else's second." That was actually somewhat uplifting! With a sigh, the girl finally brought herself to move. Slowly, she adjusted the fox back to her shoulder, dragging herself onto her feet. "But," the Kudamon added, "I'm still going to eat your socks. Even if they're on your feet." Never mind. Sentimental moment was gone. With some shuffled movements, Maia began working her way out of the forest, but not in the direction of her house. "Where are we gonna go now?"
There was hardly any thought to the answer, as the teen's mouth opened before the question was even finished. "To the store. I'm thinking we need cookies. You can even help pick out the ingredients," she stated, already on the move. Hey, it wasn't like she could go anywhere without being noticed, anyway. Maybe, once they got to the store, they would see other people shopping with their Digimon. "I mean, the sign says no pets. But, you're my partner. And a Digimon. I don't think you count." That was the most positive she'd managed to sound this entire time!
To the sudden suggestion of making sweets, the fox began whirling to and from each of her shoulders. "Really? You'll let me help? We're gonna cookies?" Then, there was a pause, "but you just got in a fight with Mom." Sure, there had been a lot of emphasis about Maia's mom not being his parent during the arguing, it didn't seem to affect Kuu in the slightest! He was going to call her it until she got used to it! Which, in all fairness, may take quite a while!
Shrugging, Maia took a look at her phone, which had finally gone silent for the first time, though several texts were displayed on the screen, including one from her mother's number. "She's probably worried to death already," the blonde explained, not bothering to open any of the messages quite yet. "If not, we'll just dump the flour on her and take a vacation to the Digital World until things blow over. Sound good?"
The fox seemed to light up at all of these ideas, "Yeah! I like flowers! And the Digital World!" At least there was no more hiding. Somehow, this was all going to turn out fine.
