Only Their Second Dumbest Decision (Luke and Iko)

Unlike in the case of Elliot's previous Tail-Blazer, this time he was able to notice the black flames while they were unimpeded. He snapped his jaws shot just before reaching Iko, staring eye to eye with the wolf as he tried to plan his next move. Isaac was a much better improv thinker than Elliot, and would have been able to capitalize on such a change in plans far more seriously. Instead he simply froze up, which considering the explosion about to ensue was a really awful reaction. He quickly ducked his head down, trying to block it with his shell, but it was too little, too late. Elliot was sent flying in an explosion of dark fire, Isaac's three heads turning to the snake and being singed by the explosion as well.
As the Sandiramon landed it started to degenerate, Elliot's eyes wide with shock as he sat motionless on the floor. If Iko looked closely, he'd notice the boy was trembling. A sudden huge explosion of dark fire, forcing his snake form back in a massive burst despite his attempt at blocking. It was all far too close, far too soon, and he wasn't getting back up any time soon. Isaac took a deep breath and degenerated as well, running over to his brother's side. He turned to Iko, nervously calling "Crap, crap, I'm sorry. I think we're gonna have to call this one off for now." He crouched down by Elliot, giving the boy a gentle shake to try and bring him back to reality. "You okay, Elliot?"
"I-I'll be fine. Just-" Elliot couldn't think of what else to add to that statement. His voice was distant and hazy, and it was clear he wasn't entirely there right now.

Oh crap... did I throttle it a little too much?
Spar or not, it was difficult to gauge just how much one had to hold back at a time like this. The wolf's mind stopped racing, from move to move, as soon as the explosion through the large serpent backwards. That much, from the alcohol combustion? Slowly, he hit the ground, black flames dissipating from around his body. The golden armor disappeared in a flush of red data as well, the wolf smoothly transitioning back to his Champion form, before collapsing onto one knee. "Ah, dammit..." Voice hissing to himself, Iko swore under his breath, as Luke ran up to his side.
"W... wait, you were just acting so smooth a moment ago! Why are you-"
"Feedback. You don't feel all your exhaustion up in the heat of things, but the moment you stop, it hits you all like a truck. Ugh..." He slowly stood up, stretching out his arms.
"I... see." Nothing serious, then. Giving a relieved sigh, Luke took a look at the two boys. "Not for nothing, but did you seriously just... win a fight like that? Two on one?"
"Dunno. The shadowfire was my last burst. With that and my armor gone, all it would have boiled down to was a battle of attrition... and the bigger Digimon usually wins those." He said that, rather matter-of-factly, before making his way to the brothers. No longer was his stance a threatening one: giving one smirk to Isaac, he knelt down in front of Elliot. "Hm... nothing outside of what I would expect, but I'd give him a minute before trying to help him up." A concussion, at worst, was Iko's unprofessional diagnosis. Turning to Isaac, he gave a smile. "Still, wouldn't you call that a little much, kid? Last thing I wanted to do there was be snake food. Kinda my fault for not setting sparring rules..." He looked around the battlefield, to illustrate his point. Giant craters, burning peat moss, and the like surrounded them. "... either way. Gotta call that one a good fight. All I can say is you two need to stop shouting your attacks. Seriously, you made it way too easy to read you sometimes."

There wasn't too much physical pain on Elliot, but he was clearly very shaken up. His skin had turned snow white from how hard he paled, and his big eyes were looking around as if in a constant state of flight-or-fight. Isaac continued to hunch over him, voice gentle and quiet. "Elliot, breathe, it's okay. We're not at the tundra. You didn't get burned that badly. This was just a normal explosion, okay? We won't need Alicia to get you cured again," The fact that this was even a sentence Isaac needed to say was a testament to how strange and wild the Digital World could get. It was also a testament to how much horrible stuff Elliot and Isaac were exposed to in such a brief amount of time. Was it any wonder that Elliot was on the border of a panic attack? "Iko didn't mean to scare you like that. It's okay. Come on, breathe, and stand up."
Slowly Elliot shuddered to his feet, still trembling slightly and breathing off-rhythm. At least now he was mobile, though. Isaac turned apologetically to Iko. "He had a bad run-in with a Myotismon at the Northern Prominence about a week back. He got some seriously bad shadow burns from trying to block an explosion gone wrong. It must've kicked back into his memory something hardcore. Honestly, I'm impressed he didn't have any problems with the shadowfire." Okay, with that cleared up, everything would be fine! Now all Iko had to do was degenerate, and shed his wou-
Oh. Oh, right. Whereas spirit users tended to lose surface damage and minor wounds upon returning to human form, Digimon didn't have that luxury.
"Don't sweat it. That one's all on us," Isaac said. "Our main sparring partner's a spirit user too, so we're used to going pretty intense when fighting her. Surface wounds just kinda reduce to us hurting like hell the morning after. We'll try and tone it down next time. But hey, it was one heck of a fight. I haven't had a workout like that in days!" He was confident that, had Elliot not broken down in the middle of the battle, they could have easily won the war of attrition until Iko degenerated. Even then, with Elliot out of commission Isaac could have at least given him hell before going down. While circumstances had intervened today, it just left Isaac all the more hungry for a rematch.
"Wait, we don't need to say anything?" This was news to Elliot! He saw Alicia doing it, figured it was one of the keys to getting the most out of his power, and since then an attack never passed un-called. He had no idea moves could be consciously used without invoking them like that!

Hm... maybe I did throttle it a little too hard.
That was definitely the last reaction that Iko expected from his opponent. Fear? Fear, from someone so enthralled in the fight a few moments ago? It definitely didn't add up in the wolf's head, but he was sympathetic enough to back off, letting Isaac deal with the matter, definitely better than the Ankomon could manage. Fortunately, it seemed to level itself out, and Isaac was more than willing to share the situation with him.
"Shadowfire from a Myotismon? No wonder... fire-type Digimon experience damage from the burn. Something that they would never feel otherwise." He said it just a bit casually, looking towards Elliot with a smile. "No worries, my flames have no lasting effect. You held up well, considering."
"Sheesh... you run off so quick." At that point, Luke ran up, joining the other three. Like the rest, he seemed out of breath - understandable, acting as Iko's battery in several ways. "Why... were you able to Digivolve there, Iko? I thought it came from... a genuine need..."
"Hmph. If you still think that after today, you have a lot to learn yourself. Don't forget what today felt like, Luke, we'll need it in the future." Scoffing at his tamer, he turned towards Isaac. "I could be lessening my wounds further than this, as well. Don't worry, I'm just too stubborn to turn to Rookie in the middle of the Dark Area. I'd rather be at the ready." It made enough sense. But as Elliot asked that last question?
Iko just laughed.
"Think about it, kid. When you read, you start learning by saying every little word, but then you just read inside your head, right? Same here. Draw the power to the front, cast the 'spell' in your head, and it will all flow out. You have to 'say' it, but you don't have to 'say' it.
"Wow. That's clear as mud."
"You'll get it too. What was that? 'Lunar Cycle, Activate'? You sound like a damn nerd." He elbowed his tamer's side, both giving a small laugh. "Anyway. We should probably get out of here, while the things here are all still spooked by the noise."

"Thank you," Elliot stammered between deep breaths, eventually forcing up the strength of will to flash Iko a shaky smile. It was clear that the boy still wasn't at 100%, but knowing that nobody here wanted to do him genuine harm was really reassuring. He looked over his body, with special attention to his arms and chest, in search of more of those noxious purple burns. Thankfully none had arisen, beyond the pale scar left behind by the last shadow burn. Sighing in relief, he stopped fussing with his shirt and started paying attention to the area around him once again. "I've been trying to get stronger too. I mean, I kind of have to, right?" It was an interesting question. What would happen if someone with control over spirits just decided to stop? Those associated with Digimon were more common than one would think, but less so than one would hope, and spirit users were even more rare than that. Would they be hurting people if they didn't want to help?
Iko's analogy resonated well with the boys, too. Their transition to living in Japan meant with it a lot of time spent trying to learn how to read. Isaac still found himself muttering under his breath every time he had to read words more complicated than the very basics. In both Digimon and language, they were constantly fighting from the back foot as they tried to smoothly adapt to the world around them. Yet, looking at the friends they've made, the fights they've won, and the sights they've seen, it wouldn't be inaccurate to say that they were rolling with the punches surprisingly well. Isaac in particular was shocked by their progress. To Elliot, doing okay enough was something almost taken for granted. To Isaac, mature enough to appreciate just how much has been going on, it was of critical significance. The two boys nodded in agreement, making sure to keep Iko's advice close. "Yeah, good call. Wouldn't want to get jumped right after such a big fight, either," Isaac pointed out.

Right, right. Sometimes it was hard to remember that, to these humans, this entire world could be a source of paralyzing fear and drama. Well, at least Elliot had come out of it relatively unscathed, physically at least, and hopefully the wolf wouldn't be a source of future nightmares.
Not that Iko could control that fact. But on that comment of getting stronger, Iko gave a mere shrug. "Power's overrated. Getting stronger just for the sake of getting stronger doesn't get you anywhere... I'd rather search for a goal." He let that sink in, before adding: "Now, if you need it, you need it. And you guys could definitely do some work refining your technique. Lest your further forms get the better of you."
"You're talkative, lately." Luke cut in with a chuckle, bumping Iko's arm with an elbow. This earned a wince from the wolf: "Hey, not on my left side. Ah... that's gonna smart tomorrow..." He grinned through his grimace, looking over these two boys. They definitely had the potential in this world, and quite honestly, he wanted to see just what they would accomplish. "We'll definitely need to find a way to keep in touch... I'm sure you got a cell, right?"
"We'll sort that out later. For now?" He pointed over his shoulder, gesturing that they should get out of here.
"Right. But not that way." Iko gestured to the left. "Away from the blood ocean."
"... Right."

"Oh, we have a goal. It's to help everybody we can," Elliot explained. "It's why we've always been working so hard to get stronger. Bigger and scarier things keep going after our friends, and we want to make sure we're ready to handle it. Bad stuff could happen if we're not, and I really don't want to see bad stuff happen to our friends."
"These aren't even our full Ultimates, really," Isaac added."They're just fraction forms. We're not entirely sure where to find our full ones, but we're hoping if we get in a lot of practice with these it won't be very hard to adapt to getting stronger ones." It seemed like a fairly sound plan. If this was just a taste of Ultimate power, their next forms would be only a half-step stronger than the full step that they experienced from Rookie to Champion. They could only hope that their next levels would have conveniences that their current forms lacked. Limbs, for example. And heads that weren't nearly as removable as Orochimon's.
"Oh, of course! Here, hold on," Isaac said, writing down their numbers and quickly giving them to Luke and Iko. "If you guys are in a hurry, you can just shoot us a call and we'll add you later. Thanks again for the great workout!" They may not have been as physically beaten up as Iko, having regenerated somewhat when leaving their Digimon forms, but they were still so exhausted. The boys had the feeling that, if they Digivolved back up to Sandiramon and Orochimon, their injuries would come back in full force. Their lower level forms might not have even been able to stand the pain. All things considered, it was one hell of a fight!
"Bye guys! See you again later!" And with that, Elliot and Isaac began to walk off . . . in the wrong direction. It seems they caught Luke's hand gesture, but not his correction. That can't end well!
