Hey.
Heeeeyyy.
Heyheyheyheyhey!!
Ikki awoke with a start, groaning as his head decided to hate him with throbbing pains. I feel sick…in an instant he was rolled over and spewing water from his stomach. The smell only made him gag further. Hands clutched at the grainy sand. Huh?
“Yuck, watya go do that for?!”
That tiny voice. Who was that?
He wiped his mouth - sticking more sand to his face unintentionally, and sat up on his knees to come face to face with a head. Ikki stared at the wide black eyes and bronchia– like ears. But that was it! No body...and currently drenched in his vomit. Dismissing the head, as if it was entirely normal, he checked out his surroundings. A beach. Sparkling blue water lazily brushing upon the land, opening up to a beautiful vast ocean. The horizon was decorated with small islands. But not the islands of Japan. That was for sure. Ikki got to his feet and attempted to wipe the sand off onto his pants. The…creature was still going off about something in which he just tuned to.
Am I dreaming?
“- I’m gonna smell so badly. Prob won’t even come off! Fero gonnaaa be so mad at me. Thanks a lot.” It shook itself in an attempt to get the bile off. Though not with much luck, and instead kicked up sand, which stuck. It was starting to look like a piece of battered and fried shrimp. Ikki sighed, feeling bad for it. Dream or not, he did…eject on it after all. With a wiggle of his nose, he latched onto the ear and tossed it into the water. The head let out a loud yelp in surprise, sputtering as it splashed in. Ignoring its rude cursing, the volleyball player took a few steps back to look up.
“Where am I?” The last thing he remembered was diving in after that brunette kid at the river…never mind dreaming. Was he dead?
‘Binary Archipelago! Where else could ya be!” The head floated by. Or was it actually swimming? It seemed to have forgotten about getting thrown in. “What ya doin’ dyin in the sand anyway?” A spout of water sprinkled from its mouth. Dying? So he wasn’t dead already? Then were the hell was Binary Archipelago. Was this some kind of joke?
“Last thing I remember, I was drowning. Then I ended up here.”
"Ohhhh. Swim out too far in the water? Surprised those scary sea digi’s didn’t get ya then. I’d be sure picking off a human would be a delicacy.” It wiggled its face in disgust. “Don’t understand wat they like about humans. Ya all look gamey.” It squiggled back onto the sand, incidentally attaching more onto its fur. Least the vomit was off.
The fact that it was talking about eating…humans, turned into a furious uneasiness. “Digi’s? What are you anyways?” Ikki forced that heart dropping panic slowly into a cool calmness. “And where is Binary Archipelago? Never heard of that existing in Japan.” First things first, find out what’s going on. He won’t be able to figure out if he starts to panic.
“What am I- where is Binary Archipelago- what do you mean? I’m a digimon! And this here,” The digimon waved its ears as if it was waving to the whole place, “Is the Digital World! How could ya not know that? Ya here aren’t ya?” None of that made any sense whatsoever.
“Upi, come on!” A bunch of similar tiny voices piped up. “Its time to go!” A group of same looking heads hopped along the beach towards them. Upi bounced to them in delight, waving its ears again to Ikki.
“Bye! No more drownin’ now!” And they were off.
He watched them leave, standing in disbelief. There was more of them! And they all looked exactly the same! How did they even differentiate from each other? Ikki rubbed his face in slight distress. What exactly did he get himself into this time? A hand settled in his pocket and that’s when he realized, his phone! What happened to it? He pulled it out harshly in a rush and stared down at…well, not his cell. It was slightly bigger, a small blank screen in the corner and black with a purple soft grip. He pressed at one of the buttons... A startling beep erupted into life from the device and he almost dropped it in surprise.
What the hell was going on?
A compass looking thing spiraled from the screen, the red arrow settling the opposite direction from the group of Upamons. Was it showing him the way home? “Not that I have any other choice…” He mumbled to himself. Might as well follow it and see where it would take him.
Further down the beach he went.
Each step Ikki took, the beep would race faster. But it was slow going. It had to have been at least an hour since he started. Trudging against the sand was pretty cumbersome, and he was starting to get thirsty. He stopped, glancing to the lapping water. Did it…curious, plus spurred on by the chance it was drinkable, Ikki crouched to scoop some up into the palms of his hand. His lips sipped lightly… and instantly spewed it out. Nope. Still Salt Water.
He sighed, straightening back up to notice that there was a cliff up ahead. Maybe if he climbed that, he could get a better look. In new vigor he resumed on. It was apparently his destination, if the raging beeps were anything to go by. Now why would it want to take him to a cliff anyhow? Sure, it could provide a view, but that isn’t exactly what he needs. Yet the curiosity still waved him on. And there he was, staring up at the intimidating height, then down at the device. It was directing him over the logs that lined the beach and into the forest.
Ikki clambered over and pushed his way through the brush. He would rather stay on the beach, whereas it would be easier to navigate than an entire vastness of trees. Alas it was taking him that way. So that way he would go! There was nothing else he could really do anyhow. But what he could’ve done was watch where he took his next pace. In a stomach lurching moment, his feet broke through the ground! Fingers unsuccessfully grasped for purchase before he fell entirely through.
It was a good drop, but brief enough not to cause any real damage, luckily.
Ikki grunted when his back made impact, the device clunking beside him and chunks of dirt lightly spraying his face from above. He remained where he was for a second longer in a daze. At least the sunlight was shining through the hole above, providing him with light. At least I’m still alive. But that looks pretty unclimbable. To his surprise, the walls were slated. No nook or cranny to place a foot or hand in sight! There was no way he would be able to get back up from here….
“Alright, here we go.” He grunted again as he got to his feet, brushing off the debris and picking up his compass. And where he had landed himself in? It looked like a mole hole. There were two entry points on either side of him. Small little tunnels beneath the ground. There was just enough space for him to crawl on his hands and knees if he wanted to. Then again, he needed to. To his dismay, the compass was pointing directly into one of the tunnels. Great. Ikki just hoped that he wouldn’t get buried alive if a collapse decided to rock his world.
So onto his hands and knees, crawling into the linear smaller space. The last of the sun rays disappeared behind him the further he went. The only light now provided for him was from the strange device. Even though he wasn’t claustrophobic….it was starting to feel stuffy. So perhaps he was? Who knows! He’s never had to actually crawl along like this before! Hurry it up. Ikki moved faster at the thought. And thankfully he didn’t have to go much farther.
The tunnel finally gave way to an open and visibly dug out chamber. Large piles of soil littered the area, emitting a soft glowing blue But what really stood out was the brilliant glare of gold. Ikki stood, aghast at the sight. He found a treasure trove! Was the weird device he obtained a treasure map of some sort? Blinking he slowly stepped around, taking in the sights with a wary gaze. If so, there could be a trap of some sort. Isn’t that how most things worked? Well in the movies anyways. Looking down back at his device, the compass whirred and beeped out of control.
Why?
Why did something like this happen?
Suddenly the noise it emitted stopped and the screen blanked out. But he didn’t care. Ikki spun around and threw it at the wall, the device bouncing off unharmed and audibly clanking to the ground. Fists clenched, fingernails biting into his palms. Was all of this some sort of sick joke? Why gold?
What were you hoping to find?
“I don’t know.” He spoke out in a whisper.
Why did you go along with it?
“I don’t know.” His voice became a bit louder. Forced.
You never believed this to be a dream.
Nor yourself dead.
“No I didn’t.”
So you hoped.
“I shouldn’t have. Always leads me to nothing.”
What were you hoping to find?
“SHUT UP.” Anger flared and he whirled back around, only to find the space now shrouded in a black mist. Coldness seeped into his bones and frozen breath blew past his lips. What was going on? Suddenly three red eyes glowed from within the fog. Ikki stepped back a bit, startled from the new development and unsure. There was a sense of dread, but his curiosity kept him from entirely from fleeing. Slowly a small shape emerged from within, those glowing eyes not once faltering into a blink. It held out a clawed hand.
Say it.
Straightaway Ikki understood and grinned.
“Power.”
Brief fear turned into rage, his body enveloped by the surging mist. It was cold. Colder than anything he has ever felt before. A cold that was beyond the senses. And yet he reveled in it. It gave him a sense of strength. Ikki closed his eyes, took in a breath of chilly air and let it out slowly. The tingly freezing buzz of the fog finally dissipated away. He felt entirely different. Smaller. A tail. Ears. But that was compensated for the power he could feel in his veins. So he didn’t care. Instead of two, three red eye’s slowly blinked open, the perspective of Ikki’s new view quite jarring. His clawed paw brushed gently against the eyeball located in the middle of his forehead. It blinked to keep the fur from agitating it.
How weird was that?
Perhaps he should be a little bit more freaked out about his transformation. Just like how he should have panicked a little more about being dropped off into what seemed to be another dimension. Yet again. Greifmon just didn’t care. Who cares? Who cares? He obtained something impossible.
Canine teeth flashed dangerously.
This is what he had hoped for.
This is what he had Wished for.
