Barry let out a gasp as he sat up suddenly in bed, sweat running over his body. His breathing was quick and showed immense signs of fear. He looked around himself in fright, his eyes scanning the darkness around him. Rubbing his eyes, Barry managed to cleanse the feeling of sleep he held moments ago as he stood up. “What… what is this?” he muttered to himself, a permeating sense of confusion keeping him from thinking straight.
-
Or at least, that’s what he had been feeling up until he heard a voice from behind him, “Barry, what’s wrong?” the feminine voice asked. Barry’s head wheeled around, looking at his wife who was squinting her eyes to look at him. For whatever reason, her name rang clear in his head despite the clouds of amnesia still being present. “Haru….Haru?” he asked, bringing one of his hands up to massage the side of his head. At this point, Haru looked at him with more of a concerned look, sitting up in bed.
-
“Is everything okay? You look like you’ve got a headache...” she asked in a worrying tone. Barry smiled at her, shaking his head as he tried to ignore the pain. He walked back toward their bed, sitting on the edge. “It’s nothing, don’t worry about it, I think I just had a bad dream…” he said, laying down. Haru shot him a worried look, embracing him as he laid down.
-
The next morning, the two of them walked along the sidewalk in the cool spring breeze. Barry was holding the hand of their 5 year old daughter while Haru carried their 5 month old son in her arms. Barry’s face carried a lucid, goofy kind of expression as he listened to his daughter mumble about cats and the weather. The entire experience seemed surreal to him, almost as if he’d just woken up from some horrible nightmare where he was weak and alone. He let out a laugh as he passed the thought through his mind.
-
Haru looked over at him questioningly, “Something funny?” she said. “Nothing really, it’s just weird. I feel like I’ve woken up from some horrible dream, back to sweet reality.” he replied. Haru scoffed at him, then returned her attention to their son. “You still have your head in the clouds eh?” she teased, relaxing her body on his right side as they walked. Barry let out a relaxed sigh as they continued their trek, feeling a sense of peace.
-
Eventually the family arrived at the park, Barry letting go of his daughter’s hand as she ran off to play with the other children. Meanwhile, Haru had sat down on a bench nearby to play with the baby. Barry looked around himself at the park, a sense of peculiarity building up in him. It was strange, he couldn’t remember the name of this park. But, he was certain he’d been here many times with his family.
-
He pursed his lips in thought as he rolled it around in his head, after a moment concluding that it was probably just a brain fart. From here his gaze turned upward, to the overcast sky. He allowed a few moments of childlike imagination to come to him, finding pictures in the clouds. He used his hand to draw outlines of digimon he remembered. For whatever reason, he kept coming back to monodramon and guilmon.
-
At this point, he began to feel the oncoming of a painful headache, prompting his eyes to dilate. He groaned as he fell to one knee, gritting his teeth as a sharp pain rang through his skull. It was monodramon, that image was causing him pain! At this point, Haru had come running toward him, noticing his obvious predicament. “BARRY! Here!” Haru shouted, offering him what looked like a pill.
-
Without question, Barry took it from her, assuming it was something to help with the pain. He swallowed it immediately, and almost instantly felt relief from the pain. After a few more moments passed, the agony subsided completely. He let out a sigh as he began to regain his balance, standing up. He looked over to Haru, their son crying in her arms due to the sudden jolt of Haru’s run.
-
“I’m…I’m okay, Haru.” Barry spoke reassuringly, patting their son’s head. Haru’s face seemingly calmed down, her expression lightening. “Honey, this is the 5th time this month you’ve had an episode… I think we should see the doctor.” Haru replied. The 5th time this month? Barry wasn’t quite sure what she was referring to, had he also forgotten that he’d had 5 major headaches this month?
-
Upon hearing this, Barry starting rubbing the side of his head in frustration. “The 5th time this month? That’s….really strange, this is the only time I can recall.” he said flatly. Haru shot him a questioning look, but turned the other way in the direction of their daughter. Instinctively, Barry went to call out for her, but he was unable to place her name. Barry froze in shock, had he forgot his own daughter’s name, too?!
-
Barry stood there as Haru called out her name, but the sound of it was static like and imperceptible to him. Barry looked around himself, a sudden sense of danger beginning to build up in him “We’re going home, honey.” Haru said, addressing her daughter as she took her little hand within her own. Then, Haru turned to face him, her expression cold and seemingly apprehensive. Barry felt taken aback, what’d caused this change in her?
-
On the way back, Barry felt as though his mind was crumbling, reality seemingly flickered in and out of existence as smaller details began to become hazier. What day had the two of them gotten married? What year was it, hell, how old had Barry become?! He gripped his hands in balled fists, feeling a sense of caution overtake him. He quickly began to distrust the world around him, looking to passerby with glares.
-
Once the family got home, Barry stayed downstairs as Haru took the kids upstairs. He ran the faucet and watched the stream of water. At first the stream of water was straight as a line, but intermittently it twisted in odd shapes. Then, a voice shot through his consciousness clear as day. It belonged to a female, and caught Barry’s attention immediately.
-
“Run.” The voice spoke. A second later, the door was banged on harshly, as if someone was trying to break in. Barry wheeled around, his expression terrified as he watched the door splinter to pieces. Standing there were two men in white uniforms, carrying batons. Haru descended from the stairs then, taking a place in-between them. “Haru! What’s going on!?” Barry questioned, his right leg taking a step backward as he eyed the back door.
-
“Oh Barry, don’t you remember? Don’t you remember what you did to me?” Haru said, cocking her head to the side as her frame fell limp in a kneeling position. Her body then began to twist into a different shape as Barry looked on in horror. After mere seconds, her body resembled a digimon more than a person. Barry immediately felt a splitting headache disable him, the image of the digimon dredging up memories so painful they threatened to tear his mind apart. Barry screamed in terror and agony as Haru advanced, the two guards flanking her grinning wildly.
-
“They’re going to take you away, Barry. For what you did to me.” She threatened, saying his name coyly. Barry looked up as he felt the house shake, until eventually reality broke down into a space of darkness, with just the four of them standing among the ruined floor. With inhuman like speed, the two men grabbed him by the arms, a prison cell materializing behind Barry. They tossed him into it forcefully, the walls instantly closing in on Barry as he yelled in horror. Barry let out a gasp as he sat up suddenly from his seat, sweat running down his body as Trailmon pulled into the station in the human world.
