Accidental Reunion [Ryo & Light]

The fire crackled in the corner of the room as Paul and Bi sat at a table across from each other in the common room of the inn. Empty bowls sat in front of them, the traces of a thick stew clinging to the insides. They had ordered a late dinner after arriving at the inn and now had nothing to do but relax until morning came.
They had enjoyed their time in Whitewater and had even found a way to make their... relationship work. Paul had found a way to avoid looking at most women, although a particularly attractive woman would draw his eyes at least. Still, a quick kiss from Bi, and he was back to normal. Secretly Bi worried about how long this would last, but she decided to enjoy it as much as possible. For this brief, fleeting moment she could be with the man she loved and know that he loved her back. Leaning back into her chair, Bi looked over at Paul, smiling.
"What did I do now? It always makes me a little nervous when you smile like that. It's always about a fifty-fifth whether it ends with you trying to kiss me or trying to hurt me. Drives a man quite mad, I'll have you know." Paul idly tilted his head to the side, trying to get a better read on his partner who was now something like his girlfriend. They had yet to give any concrete terms to their current state, and neither seemed inclined to fix that matter. Part of the reason for the trip had been to distract them from the monotony of living in Whitewater. While Bi had been around the world in her past lives, in this life with Paul they had done relatively little traveling. Although the exile was just ending in Terminus for Bi, they still wanted to avoid that place for a bit longer at least. So they packed what little they had and set out on the road. They had already traveled through the western lands and were now making their way through the northern stretches.
"That's not my fault. That's just your over active imagination at work. When does it ever end that badly with me?" Bi asked, the look of an angel on her face.
Paul just rolled his eyes. "I'm not sure I can count that high."
And that earned him a smack on the arm.

It was a pretty cold night,Although that was supposedly perfectly reasonable, considering the environment that the two were stuck in at the moment. The fireplace kept the inn quite warm, although the man still shivered when he entered the building. For some reason, the digivice had led the two over to this dreadfully freezing area, and although the Renamon was more than able to accommodate for it with her thick fur and all, Ryo was, more or less, much more reluctant about setting foot in the Village in the first place; though his determination finally saw him through, and... Well, honestly, they found nothing so far in the Village. Ryo sighed and the Renamon shrugged, resolving that they should search more when the sun rises the next morning. Seeking for a place to shelter themselves from the slow descend of snow, they stumbled upon the warm inn. Ryo was much more grateful than they should have been when they finally found the one inn that seemed to still be lively even if it was quite late at night, and he entered without a word, which irked the Renamon slightly since they hadn't even decided if they could afford the place, but she followed in anyways. Ryo would have went straight for an empty table if the Renamon hadn't held him back. First and foremost, they had to carefully analyze the place, and although Ryo sighed once more as the Renamon's eyes scanned the place, he had no other verbal objections. The quick glance that the Renamon did was more than enough to show her that there was just a slight hint of familiarity at a particular table, a couple, it seemed and the Renamon truly shouldn't interrupt, but the man sitting there was slightly familiar... The man mentioned something about counting ( counting stars, perhaps?), and Light instantly recognized the voice. It was one of the men who she had the chance to encounter in an alley, back in Shibuya, back when... She gulped to drown back her sorrow. Though she was, at first, reluctant to approach the two since it would most likely cause undesirable memories to resurface, she thought that it was at least good manners to greet them. Praying hard that she would not go into an outburst, she approached the two, with Ryo trailing behind slightly confused but following anyways, she said, "Paul?"

"You know for as affectionate as you can be, you sure can be violent too," Paul said, carefully watching Bi's hands for any further hints of smacking. It was something of a game they played, and Paul had noticed that his reactions were starting to actually get faster at catching her hand. It certainly felt at times like they were in a true relationship, not one that always had a slight hint of desperation. But that was something for another time to worry about.
"Yes, because that is really the thing to say to avoid-"
"Paul?"
The voice interrupted the couply banter between Paul and Bi. "Yes, do we know you?" Bi asked pointedly, a brief note of jealousy flaring up.
Mentally rolling his eyes at Bi's tone, he turned to look at the newcomers. Aside from the Renamon who had spoken his name, there was a guy who was probably about his age standing a little behind her. Both had an air of sadness about them, but he had no idea what could have caused it. Wait... "I think we might actually know them, Bi." Giving the new pair another look of scrutiny, Paul cautiously said, "You were partners with that one girl, right? Hikari I think it was. We tried to have dinner at my apartment that one time with Yuji and Enya."
The red-orange haired girl tapped her fist on the table lightly. "That's right! I... yeah, I remember that..." She quickly blushed at the memory of her ruining the dinner that Paul had tried to make sure the group. Shaking her head, she smiled at the Renamon and the guy with her. "Well, it is certainly good to see you again, Renamon. Looks like you managed to Digivolve after all. Why don't you two have a seat and we can catch up."
Paul nodded his head emphatically. "How is Hikari doing, anyways? I don't think I've seen her or Yuji since that dinner in Shibuya."

The Renamon gulped when Paul mentioned the name 'Hikari', so far she had done a pretty good job to bury the name away in her heart for now to get rid of the pain, but now that Paul had mentioned her, the emotions were getting riled up once more.
Ryo, on the other hand, had lost his jovial attitude and his face took a serious turn. This man knew who Hikari was? He knew who his little sister was-- Wait, they had tried to have dinner at his apartment back then? Just her and this man who seemed to be as old as him if not older? Even if this girl had been around and the Renamon too, how could she have allowed Hikari to be in a stranger's apartment? How did they have met anyways? Ryo was suspicious, overly suspicious, but the Renamon seemed friendly to the pair, so for now he would just play along, for now...
"Yes... I was her partner," the Renamon said in a quiet voice. She quickly glanced at the girl, who she assumed to be the golden Biyomon that she had encountered back then just with the guise of a Holo-Suit and gave a nod to acknowledge her offer. She sat down and Ryo was just about to follow along reluctantly as well until,
"How is Hikari doing, anyways? I don't think I've seen her or Yuji since that dinner in Shibuya."
Uncontrolled rage and anger began to seep through Ryo. It wasn't at all Paul's fault, but the tragedy that was held down in his heart began to break his facade and without a second thought, he had balled up his fists and had thrown it straight at the supposed casanova's face.

Of all the things that he thought would happen after that question, getting punched in the face ranked pretty low on the list. In fact, had Paul even paused to consider it before he asked, getting punched in the face probably wouldn't have even made the list. As a result, when the punch came flying, Paul merely had time to put on a look of confusion before the fist made contact with his cheek. The momentum spiraled Paul out of his seat, and he landed on the floor, reeling both mentally and physically. However, he still knew exactly what was about to happen.
"Bi, stop." At the moment Paul said these words, the girl in question was poised to launch herself towards the boy who had just physically assaulted the man she loved. To say she was livid and intent on paying him back in full would have been an understatement.
"We obviously don't know what's happened here, although I can guess," Paul continued to say as he picked himself up off the floor, gingerly feeling the side of his face. It stung a bit, and he knew he was going to have a proper black eye from it. He hadn't been involved in too many fights in high school, but it didn't take a genius to know this was going to leave a major bruise.
"Now if we can all take a deep breath, including you, boy-who-just-punched-me, and sit down, I think this can go better for all of us." Catching the eye of one of the servers, he gestured for a few drinks and ice. The server nodded and disappeared back into the kitchen. He wasn't entirely sure what kind of drink the server would think to bring out, but Paul had faith it would be a wise choice.
Bi meanwhile had kept her attention focused squarely on the boy and the Renamon. "If you don't mind, let's start with you explaining why you just punched my boyfriend here," she angrily demanded, not realizing exactly what she just said.

It didn't take long for the events that happened right in front of her began to sear themselves in the Renamon's mind, yet she was still too late to try and hold her partner back from punching the relatively innocent young man out of his seat and unto the wooden floor.
"Ryo," the Renamon said sternly, bringing him back into the realm of the living and out of his angered head. He still fumed with the rage that coursed through his veins, for sure, but he was able to hold himself back from punching Paul senseless.
So he took his arm back and then abruptly sat down, calling to the server who had caught Paul's eyes and who had timidly passed by, "A beer, please," he would say coarsely, and when the server were to return with the beer, he would gulp the entirety of it in a single, fleeting minute.
After quickly examining the physical condition that Paul was in after the punch, and noticing that he had only suffered a black eye, the Renamon decided that it wasn't anything too serious and let it go, sitting on the seat beside Ryo as well. Though the fleeting demand that came from Bi came to her as a surprise, "Girlfriend?" she questioned under her breath, glancing in a scrutinizing manner but said nothing more. Though it was... Odd for a digimon and a human to be dating, if that was their choice, she would not impede on it.
Ryo would then set down the mug on the table quite bluntly, and then he took in a deep breath, taking in the advice of Paul. It was slightly hard for him to focus and to calm his nerves and he would have trouble talking for the moment unless it were to turn into a stream of swears, but at the very least, he was able to stop himself from throwing yet another punch.
So in his place, the Renamon began to slowly explain in as least words as possible, "We went to the Dark Area. Then Hikari is gone."

The server had just returned with the drinks, three steaming mugs that smelled faintly of chocolate. Paul gingerly picked one of them and was just beginning to sip when Bi let the b-word drop. Coughing and sputtering, he looked over at the girl next to him, surprised that she would say something like that. He supposed it was true in a sense, but it was the first time that either one of them had put a label on them.
Then the Renamon delivered her two solemn lines. It felt like the world was shattering around him. Another person he knew was dead. He didn't cause this one, but it still felt like he should have done something, that he should have been able to do something. Good people were dying. Part of him had known all along that this world wasn't a game, no matter how much it might feel like one.
Bi too was rocked by the revelation. She couldn't imagine the pain that Renamon must have gone through in losing her partner. It crossed her mind to try to say something, but Bi knew if their positions were switched there would be no words that could mean enough. Instead she merely stood up, walked around the table, and wrapped her arms around Renamon. Paul merely stared down into his drink, offering a moment of silence for Hikari.
After a few moments, Bi let go of Renamon and returned to her seat. Paul finally looked up from his drink, "I... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..." Paul trailed off, unsure of what else he could say to make up for his blunder.
"So what do you plan to do now?"

Though the Renamon glanced at Paul with a curious wag of her eye when he coughed and sputtered out of his drink, she thought nothing less of it as something more important was nagging at her mind at that moment. Something that she had hoped would have disappeared by then...
When the Holo-Suited Biyomon came over to hug her in an act of showing condolences, the Renamon did not reply in any way. She couldn't, anyways, she didn't even hold her hand up to hug her back. Instead, she had only hung her hand and allowed the Biyomon to hug her, though her body was trembling slightly then, in her attempt to hold herself back from crying into her hands. Instead, she silently whispered, "Thank you,"
"No, it's... It's not your fault," Ryo said when he heard the other man apologize for his actions, "I apologize for punching you... Like that," he said, then gulped down yet another batch of fresh tears and ordered for yet another beer croakily, to which he downed in the instant that he received his order once more.
When Bi asked them both the question, this time, Ryo answered in the Renamon's place, "We're going to avenge her."

Vengeance... such a powerful concept. It was one that Paul could both understand and not have a clue about all at the same time. The desire to correct a wrong outside the bounds of the law, that was an idea as old as the idea of laws. For every crime that goes punished, there is almost surely another that escapes the eye of the law. Yet for Paul, he struggled to personally grasp it. The thought had never even crossed his mind. No one had ever wronged him in such an extreme fashion... until now that was. With the death of Hikari, Paul knew he had to do something about it.
Bi sat to the side, watching the slight shifts in Paul's face as thoughts raced through his head. She knew he was trying to analyze, to make sense of it and find a way to place it into his system of seeing the world. It was a trait that both annoyed her yet endeared him to her just the same. Knowing him, he was going to propose something drastic. What that would be, she could only guess, but it would be something the likes she never would have suspected.
Paul let silence sit over the table for another few seconds. Staring down into his mug, he took another small sip, feeling the warmth of the chocolate and some kind of liquor run down his throat and warm his core. "I would ask if you need any help, but by the looks on your faces, I'm sure you don't. I never got to know Hikari, and this is something that I think we can all agree should be finished by the two of you." Pausing he took another sip of his drink.
"However, that doesn't mean I don't want to do something about it. This can't be the only time where a loved one has passed away in this cruel world, and I know to the core of my being that there are crimes such as this that have gone unanswered." He glanced over at Bi, and she nodded back at him, encouraging him to continue. "In all my time here, I have yet to hear of any group whose goal is to help those in need. We've heard rumors of evil organizations, and what little law enforcement there is I have seen firsthand to be corrupt. So I propose we start a group to fill that heinous void. While you two do what you must to honor Hikari's memory, Bi and I will travel, searching for like-minded individuals to join our cause."
He looked up from his mug, watching the two faces in front of him. "What do you think?"

They've only just met, and the young man had already offered such a drastic proposition. While Ryo might understand where this man is coming from, he had doubts on whether he is actually able to fulfill his ambitious goals, and he didn't know if this man and his partner could do everything on their own whilst Ryo and his own partner travelled around the world, looking for revenge.
Ryo and the Renamon stayed quiet, searching the faces of both Paul and Bi as the casanova solemnly told them both what was on their minds, and proposed the group... Who seemed more of a vigilante organization, that akin of Robin Hood, but instead of giving coins back to the people, they would be able to deliver much more precious: blood, and life. They listened just as solemnly, heads drooping down as Ryo's eyes darted towards his empty beer.
When Paul mentioned that he had heard only rumors of an evil organization and yet nothing of a good one to help those in need, he laughed coarsely, "Funny, isn't it? To hear how evil lurks around the Digital World and yet there is nothing to prevent danger?" he said roughly, "Shows you just how f***ed up the whole system is,"
It was then that Ryo truly realized the worth of the ideals and goals that Paul had presented. This vigilante organization that he had offered... It was exactly what this World needed, to prevent 'that' to happen to anyone else, to prevent... Just about anything life-threatening. He needed to do this, he knew that 'she' would have done so in his place if 'she' were still here, a glance towards the Renamon with the same knowing look confirmed that. No, this was something that he must do.
"But if we were to split up, how will we meet again?" the Renamon replied worriedly, glancing at Ryo once more and then the young man offered their combined stances:
"If the both of you are going to wander around aimlessly, then we suggest that you join us to aid in our effort, if having known 'her' meant anything to you," Ryo said, "That way, we would perhaps be more cohesive and we would both be able to find those who are like-minded to our cause. We honestly have no idea what we are going up against, so any help at all would be appreciated, especially from someone who had known 'her' in the first place. What do you say?"

Paul and Bi listened to the suggestion from the man and the Renamon. To be honest, Paul had considering saying something along the same lines. Trying to start a vigilante organization was probably enough to qualify him for the certifiably insane status, but there was something in the idea that wouldn't let go of his mind. Perhaps a small part of him had finally broken, and this was the only way he could find a way to repair it. Whatever the reason, he knew what he had to say.
Grasping Bi's hand in his, he could feel her gently squeeze his hand in return. She was with him in this. One way or another they'd see this through to the bitter end. And Paul suspected that the man sitting across from him felt the same way. "That you would extend such an invitation to us... I truly cannot express how much of an honor that is. But looking at the two of you, it is clear to me that you will be able to handle anything that fate throws your way. You two have a bond... not entirely dissimilar to ones I've seen myself," Paul said, giving Bi's hand another squeeze as he said that.
"You two will be able to avenge her death. And do not worry about us. We have no intent of wandering about aimlessly. A former colleague of mine I've heard was released from our former employer under less than ideal circumstances, something to which I can relate quite well. I intend on contacting him and one or two other people I've met who I think share our beliefs about what this world needs." Paul paused, thinking of what to say next. Already he had a plan forming in his head for the organization, but it was a rough sketch at best. Fortunately, there would be plenty of time to fill in details while the recruiting drive took place.
"As far as contacting us goes, we can exchange D-Terminal information," Bi chimed in. "That way we can stay in touch whenever and wherever we are. We'll keep you posted on how the formation goes, and if you two do need help, we will do our best to be there as soon as possible. However, I think Paul's right about you two. No matter what, you'll be able to make it, as long as you never forget who is by your side," she said, glancing over at Paul to give him a small smile.

Paul had contacts that he thought might help out with their problems and would also most likely help out to join this organization? Ryo took a moment to think, he wasn't sure if he could trust them without seeing them with his own pair of eyes, even then he'd probably have to make sure that they would be trustable (an exception for Paul as it seemed that Light already trusted him, and it was pretty hard to get her trust). But then again, perhaps on this point, Ryo would have to trust Paul's judgment and leave it to him, since what he said was true.
"Right then, I'm putting that in your hands, Paul," he said quite formally, putting his arms crossed on the table, "Though of course, I won't make you do all the work too, I will make sure to recruit anyone that I deem trustworthy and would seem right towards our cause. I'm pretty sure that there will be a lot of people available, digimon and humans alike, as this is a great big world, after all,"
Though when Bi mentioned something about having a D-Terminal, Ryo had to glance towards the Renamon's direction for more information on it, with a raise of his eyebrow as well as he wasn't exactly sure what a D-Terminal was. For all he knew, the item that he was holding on that gave power to Renamon for her digivolutions, or so she called them, was called a Digivice and not a D-Terminal, and surely something as small as that couldn't be used to simply stay in touch with others. No it seemed that they were talking about something else--
Oh! Now Ryo remembered! Perhaps it was the computer-like device that Hikari had gotten when she had started out as a Tamer, the one that held all the information and instructions that led her to come to the Digital World...
That led her to come to the Digital World...
F***, that could have netted the two hints and yet Ryo didn't have it! No, even Light didn't seem to have it right now, as his glance only elicited a shrug from the Renamon, "It was gone with her," she replied shortly. He wasn't sure of that, as if the Digivice was left intact, then there was perhaps a chance that the D-Terminal was left intact too, but just... Hidden, somewhere. Back in that horrendous place called the 'Dark Area'. But first, he had to explain the situation to the both of them first.
"Apparently, it was gone when... 'That' happened, but I'm not sure if it was just accidentally left behind in the Dark Area or not, and I don't think phones work here so we don't really have any way of contact..." he then placed his thumb and pointer finger on his chin as he fell back on the chair and crossed his legs, "Unless you want to go with us to find 'her' D-Terminal, we might have to rely on messenger pigeons," he chuckled.

The D-Terminal was gone? Paul silently groaned. This was going to complicate things. A key part of running any organization was communication. He had found out that much from the clubs he had joined for the brief time that he was in college. If they couldn't be in contact at all times, that was going to create some serious problems down the line.
The Dark Area though... Paul had never been there, and if was up to him, he'd never even venture near the place. But this is a serious problem, and as much as he'd prefer to just get straight to the task of recruiting, it didn't seem like there were too many other options. He supposed in a sense, it was only fitting. By this point, they had seen the rest of the Digital World. May as well toss the Dark Area into the mix.
"Well it doesn't really seem like we have much of a choice then..." Paul trailed off, realizing that he didn't actually know the other man's name. "Uh... I don't think we ever properly introduced ourselves. My name's Paul Rogers. This is my partner and uh..." He blanked momentarily on what to use to refer to Bi.
As soon as Paul started to hesitate, Bi gave him a swift elbow to the ribs. He started, gave her his best smile before continuing. "And my girlfriend Bi. There's a story there, but we can tell you that on the trip that I suspect we'll be taking soon." Paul extended his hand out to the man across the table in greeting.

"I deeply apologize for involving the both of you into our matters," the Renamon formally acknowledged, as she knew that this disturbance would definitely create unnecessary troubles to the pair, "Hopefully... We wouldn't be inside the Dark Area for long, only for just a short time to return back to where... 'It' happened, and then to find the D-Terminal lying somewhere around there. Though honestly, we have returned to that spot earlier as well and did not find the device, so it may be a little longer than that,"
Ryo was surprised that Renamon had finally spoken up in length, at least. He hadn't really seen her speak so much before, aside from her being the harbinger of grave news when she had returned back to the Real World with Vale, but that is something else that did not need to be mentioned right now. What does, however, was the fact that Paul and his 'girlfriend' had started to properly introduce themselves to the pair, now that they are in 'cahoots', or something of the sort. Though knowing that they are a vigilante group, that isn't much of a surprise.
"I'm Ryo, Ryo Asashi," reaching out to accept his handshake gratefully.
"As you know, I'm Renamon, however..." the Digimon casted a sideway glance as if in humiliation, "I have taken up the name Light to honor 'her', but if you do not feel comfortable with it, then you may just call me Renamon instead,"
"I guess we should be going, then," Ryo would say while standing up, and then he would wait for Paul and Bi to follow along and he would head out towards the door, then he would smirk towards the two, "I'm also hoping for an interesting story along the way, Paul," he would open the door then, leading the way into the snowy landscape and the dark future in store for them all.

Paul and Bi listened in silence as the Renamon spoke for the longest time yet. Before it had mostly been the other man who had done the talking for them. Then again, he and Bi operated using a similar style, Paul thought to himself. On the other hand, they often were in agreement on the necessary course of action, even if their opinions on some particulars differed wildly.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Ryo. I look forward to working with you," Paul replied as he firmly shook Ryo's hand. For some reason, it seemed that they were making a lot of new friends recently. He suspected that if they were to continue on this path of vigilantism, they would add a lot of new people to their list of friends here in the Digital World. They'd probably also reunited with friends, like they had with the Renamon. When one wanted to save the world, it seemed rather inevitable.
Bi shook her head at the end of the Renamon's comment. "No, Light, we're fine with calling you that. I think... I think she would be proud to have you carry her name on for her."
When Ryo suddenly stood up, Paul quickly drained the last of the contents of the mug in front of him. It was warm and he could feel the slight hint of alcohol hiding behind the chocolate taste, but it wouldn't be enough for him to actually suffer any consequences. It would though keep him warm out in the cold. Sighing as he put the mug down, he stood up as well, wrapping his scarf around his neck and putting on his jacket. Bi did the same as even in holosuit form, she still found it was chilly without any extra layers on.
Paul grinned at Ryo's comment about a story as they walked out the dor. "Oh you'll be sure to get one. You see, it all started one morning when we got a call..."
