Tadao Asahina was really dreading beginning university here. Since the move from Kagoshima, he had been almost reclusive, remaining in his bedroom and rarely venturing out. After all, what could he do? Tokyo was just way too busy for his liking, he didn't have work, university hadn't started yet, and he didn't know anyone here.
Not that he was very popular in Kagoshima either. Yes, he talked to some people in his class sometimes, but nobody he would declare his 'friend' or anyone that close. He wasn't invited to parties, he was always a wallflower when forced to go out. It was just, he didn't know how to talk to people. And so people tended to avoid him.
And so, on one Saturday night, Tadao was doing what he usually did - play video games. Not just any game either, he was fully focused on one he had been looking forward to for quite some time.
The hours ticked past, and thankfully his parents didn't bother him. So fixed was Tadao that he didn't notice something in the room with him.
From the computer on his desk, an object materialized. A large purple and white egg. But what could it be? Tadao didn't notice it was there.
In the game, Tadao approached the final boss's lair. He was bristling with excitement, all of the last few hours had been coming up to this moment. As the game's cinematic heralded the beginning of the battle, the egg on his desk began to crack. But Tadao was wearing his headphones, so he didn't hear. And out of the egg, a small fluffy purple head bounced out. He shook the fragments of shell off his fur, then he opened his yellow eyes.
And the first thing he saw was the back of Tadao's head, up against what looked like a very fun battle. Tadao was excited, he could feel victory in his grasp. The creature on his desk watched with interest. This game was just fascinating!
The long health bar at the top of the screen was gradually depleting. 1/4 left. 1/8 left. 1/20 left, only a sliver of health, then, finally, the finishing blow was made.
"Yes!" Tadao cheered as a cinematic played of the boss suffering defeat.
"Yay!" cheered the creature on the desk. And in celebration, he bounced over to Tadao's side to congratulate him. Tadao looked down, then gasped, jumping to his feet in shock. He put the headphones off, staring at the creature.
"What in the world...?" he asked, more surprised than genuinely threatened by the little fuzzball. He took a closer look. "What... are you?" he asked, examining the creature.
"I'm Dodomon!" the creature answered, bouncing around a little. "And Tadao won the game! Yay!"
"Dodo... mon?" Tadao repeated, cleaning his glasses to make sure he wasn't seeing things. He then reached out carefully to make sure he wasn't hallucinating, and patted the creature between the ears. Dodomon seemed to like it. "How do you know my name?" he asked.
"It says so on the scween, no?" Dodomon said. Tadao realized he had missed most of the ending so far, but during the boss fight his character name (sadly named after himself) was displayed in the game HUD.
"I guess that works out" Tadao relented. "But... how did you get in here?"
"I... don't know, I just hatched and thewe I was!" Dodomon said. His underside then rumbled a little. "I'm hungwy! Do you have anything to eat?"
Tadao supposed that he was hungry too. Chuckling a little, he walked into the empty kitchen to get something. Dodomon bounced behind him. Grabbing a quick snack, Tadao gave him a cheese treat to eat. Dodomon ate happily, then in a sudden flash of light, he grew bigger.
"...Geez, this can't be real can it?" Tadao asked, as the creature seemed to have gained a small body. He looked like a large purple hamster now. He was quite cute.
"I assuwe you it is weal~" the creature said. "I am now a Dowimon!"
"A Dowimon?" Tadao repeated.
"No, Dowimon!" the creature insisted, After a few more frustrating exchanges like this, Tadao finally got the hint that the creature was now "Dorimon".
"Ohh, right" he said. "Well then... Dorimon, why are you here?"
"Because I'm your pawtner now!" Dorimon said, looking happy again. "I'm hewe to look out for you! And we can be best buddies!"
Tadao was wondering if he was dreaming this. He probably was. It tended to happen if he played too much games.
"Well... alright" the young man said. "It's a bit late, so, how about we go to bed, Dorimon?"
"Aw, okay" Dorimon said. To Tadao's delight, he seemed content to sleep on top of Tadao's bed, curling up a little. After preparing for bed and slipping into the blankets, Tadao petted him for a moment. He seemed to like it, and he was very warm and soft.
"This... just can't be real" Tadao sighed. Why in the world would some cute fluffy talking animal show up of nowhere and offer to be friend to a loser like him? Well, he supposed he'd wake up soon and it'd all pass.
But it didn't quite work out that way.
