There were a few things that crossed the mind of a short, stubby skeleton robed in a blue jacket and wearing slippers as he stood alone in the Last Corridor.
Mainly thoughts about the humans. The two new ones.
For one thing, these two humans were not like the normal one that'd be thrown into this situation. That was pretty clear to Sans. While the skeletal monster didn't have omniscient knowledge of the events thats transpire, he was aware enough of his predicament and how it usually follows.
He is brought back to the beginning of the day. A human at some point falls to the Underground and travels through the Ruins. He can only assume that they meet the friendly lady behind the giant door that leads to Snowdin.
From there, they'd travel the entirety of the Underground, heading to one destination. The capital of the Underground, New Home.
That was where his job came in. They were to be judged. For every last bit of EXP and LOVE they've gained throughout their journey.
The circumstances that would lead to the end of their journey usually always changed. Most were peaceful and did not lay a hand on a single monster throughout their journey, even at the risk of life or death. A couple were a bit more on the violent side and were willing to kill. As such, EXP and LOVE would be gained.
The human themselves were usually variable too. Some were boys. Some were girls. Some were... well, unidentifiable. How they all act was usually different in each case. It was hard to really plaster tags to identify the kiddos usually as they could be quite different from one another, especially in personalities and temperaments.
One thing he was certain though was that in a way... they all were supposed to be the same person. Or at least different takes on the same person. They were all nonetheless remarkably determined.
He had to admit, he was a bit of a loss for words when instead of the usual human, two show up in their place.
These girls were too different from the usual kiddos to even dare lump with the others. For one thing, completely different attire and hair colors. One was rather identifiably a teenager, the other being... probably very young teenager. Just barely taller than him.
Another thing... one thing he was pretty one-hundred percent sure about was that all the many variants of humans that he and all other Sanses are fated to meet were determined. Easily identified with the bright red hue of their SOUL.
These chicks though had different colored SOULs. A purple and yellow SOUL respectively. Every human SOUL was of one of seven different colors. It was the main way to separate them from monster SOULs, which were turned upside down and were white. Red stood for determination, purple for perseverance and yellow for justice.
Justice was a no-brainer to explain what it meant. The desire to punish evil-doers and protect the innocent. Perseverance though was a harder word to nail the meaning of.
Honestly, you'd think determination and perseverance go hand in hand. They are very similar adjectives frankly. Determination meant being driven to a goal, which for many of the residents of the Underground was freedom.
Perseverance on the other hand means the drive to continue an action, regardless of the difficulties thrown at one's person.
Both adjectives weren't necessarily good or bad. He damn well has seen a lot of variants of the regular humans do some damnable things through their journeys in the Underground. Some borderlined committed genocide on monsterkind.
He could only hope that the others Sanses have done a good job at giving those kiddos exactly what they deserve.
A b a d t i m e.
But he did have to admit, he hasn't had much experience with humans besides the normal one. Theses ones... were certainly a lot louder and more talkative than the normal human. More willing to express their feelings and thoughts.
They certainly feared for their lives far more than the normal humans too. As if they truly had just one life.
It pretty much brought Sans to the conclusion that these chicks were different from the other humans. For one thing, they were not time travellers. Of all the time he spent watching them throughout their journey, he never once saw a fraction of a sign that would suggest otherwise.
Now dimension traveller, that was a bit more accurate. They obviously did not seem to belong in this world, Sans having to admit that some of their conversations were... confusing.
They apparently were pretty used to monsters, at least in their homeworld... though they were apparently called Digimon. Short for digital monsters or something like that. Honestly, he wasn't one to dwell too deeply into things. It didn't concern him, what mattered was NOW.
Though he did have to admit, he pitied those monsters for having to deal with the chick with the purple SOUL. She was NOT a nice person by any means.
Calming his nerves, the gremlin-esque skeleton slowly begin to think about what brought them all to this point.
Girlies exit the ruins. He pulled the normal japes he'd usually pull on humans. Purple SOUL didn't take too kindly to them, but yellow SOUL found his wit and humor hilarious.
It was immediately apparent that purple SOUL girl was a bit of a freak though in ways. By the time she got out of the ruins, she was already LV10. Curiously though, it seemed that this LV was not recently gained. The two humans did not kill anyone in the Ruins according to Yellow SOUL girl. While he'd doubt that claim from Purple SOUL girl, Yellow SOUL girl was a different story.
Yellow SOUL girl was too much a cinnamon roll to doubt. Seriously, this chick was pretty much a human Papyrus. LV1 and without a single point of EXP for a long time. No wonder she and Papyrus got along so well.
Either way, that was besides the point.
One thing that common between the two girls (apparently the only thing as they apparently weren't even related) was that they ALWAYS seemed to speak aloud what was currently on her mind. Most of the time what came out of Purple SOUL girl's mouth was nothing good to say.
Bless Asgore that Papyrus is a cinnamon roll. The poor guy mistook a lot of the girl's more foul language as actually being an entirely new language all together. Yellow SOUL girl at least seemed to try and keep her counterpart from acting up.
That was one thing he noticed throughout this entire exscursion. Purple SOUL girl was usually the aggressor in fights. Willing to pummel monsters till they are just about ready to turn to dust.
If it weren't for the girl with the yellow SOUL being the moral conscience between the two it seemed, plenty of monsters would have certainly lost their lives to Purple SOUL girl.
His bro included.
Papyrus tried to fight the humans, so he could capture them of course. That was pretty much the usual gist of how that went. Purple SOUL girl seemed to actually think they were in danger and attacked Papyrus a couple of times, but Yellow SOUL girl intervened and eventually managed to stop the fight entirely.
Honestly, from there... most of the things he'd expect from the regular humans who decide to play "nice" ended up happening. The girls hung out with his bro, went to Grillby's with him... but then moved on to Waterfall.
He had to admit, Undyne was while at heart a good person... he could kinda relate to the girls' choice to fight Undyne to the bitter end. Undyne was too determined to just spare them outright. Monster-kind was too close to being freed, they needing only one more human SOUL to break the barrier that trapped them Underground. For Undyne, it would have been a fight to the bitter end if it meant she could help achieve that goal.
While there have been timelines where Undyne called off her murderous attempts at taking her advesary's life, that was likely because they knew they were never in real danger. These girls though probably truly only had one chance.
She did give them the option to give up one of their SOULs, and she'd let the other go. It was about as merciful as Undyne usually could get when she had an objective in-mind. He could tell that purple SOUL girl seemed tempted to try and ditch the younger human... but something stopped her.
Guess they weren't completely bad.
It actually made him choke up a little hearing yellow SOUL girl begin to cry after Undyne's body scattered into dust. Purple SOUL girl looked less empathetic to the fact they took someone's life, but at least seemed to comfort the girl.
Their LV went up from 10 and 1 to 11 and 5 from the EXP earned from killing Undyne. Kinda sad frankly. They had been doing so well until that point. At least the little kiddo was... He doubted he or anyone could persuade the vicious chick from the path she had already set out for herself it seemed.
While that could have been the start to something much darker, the two girls surprisingly made it all the way through Hotlands and the CORE without slaying a single other monster. Not even Muffet, who had threatened to bake them into spider pastries or Mettaton, whom tried to murder and steal one of their SOULs so he could escape to the surface. The monsters they encountered certainly weren't any less dangerous... but they still managed to strive to do the right thing.
But now, their journey was coming to an end. The only obstacle left between them and freedom was Asgore and the barrier.
Those three would together decide the fates of humanity and monsters
From outside, Charlie could still hear the chatter and cheers of the monsters of New Home, many whom came to greet her and Satsuki personally. The two girls as they walked through New Home learned of the story that befell this kingdom and King Asgore.
It just wasn't fair to her. None of this was. These monsters didn't deserve being locked down in these dark depths. From the smallest Whimsun to even the terrifying Knight Knights... none of these monsters she could tell were inherently evil. Just like Digimon.
Even Undyne, the determined fish lady who tried to spear them to death... She just was trying to fight for her people. For who she cared about.
It made the short girl all the more gloomy than she had already been feeling after hearing from the nice lizard scientist that if they were to escape the Underground, they'd need to kill Asgore. And take his soul.
None of this seemed right to her.
"Hurry up. We must be getting close." Satsuki would rather irritantly order the short teenager, causing Charlie to run back to Satsuki's side.
The new room they had entered appeared to be some kind of... hallway. Warm, golden colors lit up the long corridor as what seemed to be light pouring from the windows illuminating the halls.
While Charlie had to admit... Satsuki wasn't a particularly nice person, she did consider them to be now a friend. They tried several times to use violence to solve their problems throughout their trip through the Underground. Innocent monsters would have likely died if SHE had not been there to convince Satsuki to show some mercy.
Despite their flaws and blemishes, the girl could see good in them. If they were truly bad, they wouldn't have listened to her... even back in the Ruins where most of the monsters were frankly barely able to hurt them.
Except Toriel, but she never meant to hurt them. Just scare them.
As the two girls walked past several of the marble-esque pillars together, Charlie could not help but feel a slight feeling of... dread? Anticipation?
From the looks of it, Satsuki felt it too... the blonde haired young adult for a moment flinching. "The hell...?"
For a moment the girls felt very unnerved, unsure of what had triggered the odd sensation. While the long hallway looked liked it should have been empty, deep in the shadows... something lurked. While obscured in darkness, their visage was of a familiar form.
"Mister Sans?" Charlie would be the one to ask aloud, unsure what to expect. After the rather dreary walk through New Home and hearing of the story of Prince Asriel and another fallen human, she had not expected for of all people to show up here... to be the funny pun-loving skeleton man who helped them out through Snowdin. While Sans had been a very nice monster, he also had a bit of a... mysterious vibe to him.
So why was he here now?
Before either of them could try to ask any more questions, suddenly... the sound of a bell chime echoed across the hallways, the familiar and iconic sound of church bells ringing for several seconds.
It was only then did Sans finally speak... a tone in his voice unlike the goofy voice that the human duo had grown to become accustomed to. For once... Sans sounded dead serious. Neither were willing to interrupt his impending speech.
* So you two finally made it
* The end of your journey is at hand.
* In a few moments, you two will meet the king.
* Together...
* You will determine the future of this world.
* That's then.
* Now.
* You will be judged.
* You will be judged for your every action.
* You will be judged for every EXP you've earned.
* What's EXP?
* It's an acronym
* It stands for "execution points."
* A way of quantifying the pain you have inflicted on others.
* When you kill someone, your EXP increases.
* When you have enough EXP, your LOVE increases.
* LOVE, too, is an acronym.
* It stands for "Level of Violence."
* A way of measuring someone's capacity to hurt.
* The more you kill, the easier it becomes to distance yourself.
* The more you distance yourself, the less you will hurt.
* The more easily you can bring yourself to hurt others.
* Now you understand.
* It's time to begin your judgement.
* Look inside yourself.
* Have you really done the right thing?
* And considering what you have done...
* What will you do now?
* Take a moment to think about this.
Sans went silent once more, the only thing making sound in the room being what sounded like a holy echo. The girls were left to their own thoughts and devices.
And frankly... Charlie didn't like being left to think about herself.
Level of Violence. Extermination Points. That's one brutal way of marking someone for their actions... Is that how killing things worked in this world? It reminded her of how in the Digital World, it was a bit of a kill or be killed situation to live there at times.
God she hated that stupid flower.
Regardless... it kinda scared her frankly. While her partner, Cassidy, has killed other Digimon before... That was totally in self-defense or they being a threat. She herself never really went out of the way to end any of their lives.
Did that mean Cassidy would have a high LOVE? Does that even apply back in their world?
She missed him greatly.
Still, she could not help but feel a weight in her stomach reside deep down in her. She and Satsuki killed someone down here. Sure it was someone who was not going to tolerate letting either of them live, but Undyne didn't seem like a bad person... monster.
After all, she was friends with Papyrus! A person friends with him couldn't have been evil.
The girl could not help but wince slightly, attempting to fight back tears.
She wished that she could go back. There had to been a way to spare Undyne. There just HAD to have been.
Was Satsuki thinking the same? She glanced at the young woman, they having a dark and brooding expression on their face. It was hard to tell if it's features expressed sadness or guilt... or she was truly heartless to their sins. While Charlie had to admit, Satsuki was very rough around the edges... she wasn't all bad.
Someone like her could never be completely bad.
It was then Sans finally spoke up once more, his tone swapping to the familiar goofy voice that you could almost hear being in comic sans. No, she wasn't sure HOW you could speak in comic sans... but that was how her mind processed it.
* ...
* truthfully, it doesn't really matter what you two say.
* all that's important is that you two were honest with yourselves.
* what happens now.
* we leave up to you.
And with that, the skeleton retreated into the shadows. Almost instantaneously in fact. The girls didn't even get a moment to blink before Sans disappeared, they now the only ones left in the halls.
"... The hell is his problem?" Satsuki spoke up somewhat aggressively as she began to make her way through the halls. "We're not stopping now. I NEED to get home. You do too."
Charlie gulped slightly, the taste of bile rising up in her throat. "But... dat means we'll need tuh kill Asgore."
"Whatever. He's killed six kids. I'm not showing mercy to some child-killing monster, ESPECIALLY if his soul is our ticket home." Satsuki responded, a determined but frightening look on her face. "He's not going to show up mercy. We shouldn't either." She'd repeat as she took Charlie's hand.
"Come on. We wasted enough time here. Let's end this story and get home."
(OOC: SO I made this monstrosity. Yaaay. 190 sentences, more than 2 MPCs worth of writing. So forth, I'm actually basically doing the topic twice. Once for @satsuki and for @charliered . Hopefully no probs with that! I'll take posts for Charlie and bits for Satsuki!)
